Renowned astronomer Galileo Galilei has been lauded for centuries for his courageous principled stance against the Catholic Church. He argued in favor of the Earth moving around the Sun, rather than vice versa, in direct contradiction to church teachings at the time. But a long-lost letter has been discovered at the Royal Society in London indicating that Galileo tried to soften his initial claims to avoid the church’s wrath.
In August, Salvatore Ricciardo, a postdoc in science history at the University of Bergamo in Italy, visited London and searched various British libraries for any handwritten comments on Galileo’s works. He was idly flipping through a catalogue at the Royal Society when he came across the letter Galileo wrote to a friend in 1613, outlining his arguments. According to Nature, which first reported the unexpected find, the letter “provides the strongest evidence yet that, at the start of his battle with the religious authorities, Galileo actively engaged in damage control and tried to spread a toned-down version of his claims.”
“I thought, ‘I can’t believe that I have discovered the letter that virtually all Galileo scholars thought to be hopelessly lost,’” Ricciardo told Nature. “It seemed even more incredible because the letter was not in an obscure library, but in the Royal Society library.”

Researchers have discovered malware so stealthy it remained hidden for six years despite infecting at least 100 computers worldwide.
Slingshot—which gets its name from text found inside some of the recovered malware samples—is among the most advanced attack platforms ever discovered, which means it was likely developed on behalf of a well-resourced country, researchers with Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab reported Friday. The sophistication of the malware rivals that of Regin—the advanced backdoor that infected Belgian telecom Belgacom and other high-profile targets for years—and Project Sauron, a separate piece of malware suspected of being developed by a nation state that also remained hidden for years.
“The discovery of Slingshot reveals another complex ecosystem where multiple components work together in order to provide a very flexible and well-oiled cyber-espionage platform,” Kaspersky Lab researchers wrote in a 25-page report published Friday. “The malware is highly advanced, solving all sort of problems from a technical perspective and often in a very elegant way, combining older and newer components in a thoroughly thought-through, long-term operation, something to expect from a top-notch well-resourced actor.”

—While its surprise announcement of a home security camera might be turning some heads, Amazon is also officially launching a new version of its popular Fire TV media streamer.
In terms of design, the new Fire TV falls somewhere between the box it’s replacing and Amazon’s Fire TV Stick. It’s powered through a wall adapter with a Micro USB plug, and its short HDMI connector comes attached so you won’t have a mess of cables cluttered around the back of your TV.
But unlike smaller streaming dongles, the new Fire TV is capable of outputting 4K HDR video at 60 fps (frames per second) and has support for Dolby Atmos, which lets you have better-than-5.1-surround-sound with the right equipment. These specs, plus a quad-core processor, support for the current fastest Wi-Fi standard, and Amazon Alexa integration are impressive on their own, but that the new Fire TV costs closer to $ 50 than $ 100 is pretty amazing.
It’s great enough to have earned a place as the best Fire TV option in our media streaming box buying guide.
Like all streaming devices, the new Fire TV has apps for the big streaming players like Netflix and Hulu, but it can also access Amazon’s own video content. Prime members will find their video queue and recommendations are automatically displayed once they sign in. The same is true for their Prime Music library.
Over the past few years, Amazon has also made deals with premium video content providers to get their content on its platform, and its pulled some strings for early adopters of the new Fire TV. Anyone who activates one before November 15 will receive promo codes for one free month of Showtime access and two free months of Hulu access.
Besides being a media streaming box, the new Fire TV can also be a smart home hub thanks to the included Alexa remote. You can speak into the remote to navigate around the Fire TV’s interface and access video content, but also control your smart home accessories, ask questions, or access any of Alexa’s skills.
If you’re looking for a way to future-proof your home theater system without breaking the bank, the new Fire TV is a good bet. It supports all the latest audio, video, and wireless standards, and the fact that it can pull double duty as a smart home hub in a pinch is a nice bonus.

Nuclear weapons researchers and archivists working for the US government have declassified 62 never-before-seen films of atomic explosions .
The new batch of videos joins 63 other clips of Cold War-era test-blasts, bringing the total to 125 declassified films now available to watch on YouTube. (We’ve embedded the playlist at the end of this story.)
Hundreds more of these decaying films could reach the internet as high-definition videos in the coming months as the team tracks the videos down in warehouses, digitally scans them, and re-analyzes them for crucial data. Then, if they don’t reveal any secrets that North Korea or other adversaries might not have, they release the videos on YouTube.
“The public has a right to see this footage,” Greg Spriggs, a nuclear-weapons physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), said in a press release.
Weapons researchers recorded about 10,000 films of above-ground test blasts from 1945 through 1962, which were analyzed to determine a device’s explosive yield, then locked away in high-security vaults.
No one saw the footage for decades, yet Spriggs said it’s helping characterize how modern bombs will behave, since they aren’t detonated anywhere except as a computer simulation.
“These films are priceless to us. Absolutely priceless,” Spriggs told Business Insider in March. “But they’re very, very fragile, brittle, and old. They’ve shrunk about 2%.”
One of the films in this second and latest batch shows the “Tesla” test shot on March 1, 1955. Like most of the films, it was recorded at about 2,000 frames per second. The test yielded a seven-kiloton blast — about half as powerful as the bomb detonated over Hiroshima. It was one of 14 total tests in a series called Operation Teapot, which the military set up to refine its tactics for using nuclear weapons on the battlefield.
This test, called “Housatonic,” was one of 31 nuclear blasts in Operation Dominic.
The device was detonated about two miles above the Johnston Atoll in the Pacific Ocean and yielded a blast of 8.3 megatons — more than 400 times as strong as the Hiroshima bomb blast.
Since 1945, the US government has detonated more than 1,000 nuclear weapons. Researchers blew up the nuclear devices on the ground, in ocean atolls, and in space.
Some 210 test blasts were set off in Earth’s atmosphere; that is, before the grave risks of radioactive fallout — soil and other material that’s sucked into a blast and becomes irradiated — were acknowledged. A series of treaties with the former Soviet Union moved nuclear-weapons testing underground. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty entirely banned nuclear tests, but the US has yet to ratify the agreement.
By studying the aging films with modern tools and software, Spriggs and others have learned that some manual measurements taken during the Cold War were off by sometimes 20-30%.
“Not only are we preserving history, but we’re getting much more consistent answers with our calculations,” Spriggs said in a press release.

The films have decayed because they’re made of nitrate cellulose, which slowly decomposes in the air while releasing a vinegar smell. Seeing the potential loss, Spriggs and others began a rescue effort more than five years ago.
“This is it. We got to this project just in time,” Spriggs said in a video about the digitization effort. “We know that these films are on the brink of decomposing, to the point where they will become useless.”
This data they gather will play a vital role in the US government’s $ 1 trillion effort to modernize its nuclear weapons stockpile.
“It’s been 25 years since the last nuclear test, and computer simulations have become our virtual test ground. But those simulations are only as good as the data they’re based on,” Spriggs said in the release. “Accurate data is what enables us to ensure the stockpile remains safe, secure, and effective without having to return to testing.”
It took LLNL roughly five years to locate about 6,500 of the 10,000 estimated films, then scan 4,200 of those. The largest-format, 70-millimeter films are digitized as 8K ultra-high-definition video — a format that’s 16 times as large as high-definition 1080p video.
Although Spriggs said the team can scan about one film per hour, it takes much longer to re-analyze the movies. So far, the team has finished assessing more than 500 films.
“In order to declassify it, someone … has to go through it frame-by-frame. It’s a very intensive process, and there hasn’t been enough of a demand,” Spriggs said in March. “But it’s now a race against time.”
LLNL/YouTube
The project is important to “help certify that the aging US nuclear deterrent remains safe, secure, and effective,” LLNL wrote in its YouTube playlist description.
Jim Moye, a rare-films expert and movie-industry veteran, is helping rescue the footage.
“It is going to be gone at some point, and we don’t have forever to do this,” Moye said in a video about the project.
Spriggs said the team was learning new details about the detonations — lessons he hopes to pass on to future generations.
“It’s just unbelievable how much energy’s released,” Spriggs said in the release. “We hope that we would never have to use a nuclear weapon ever again. I think that if we capture the history of this and show what the force of these weapons are and how much devastation they can wreak, then maybe people will be reluctant to use them.”

Famed KGI Securities analyst and Apple watcher Ming-Chi Kuo recently sent a note to investors (which we first saw via AppleInsider) in which he says he believes next year’s OLED iPhones will use newly optimised, “L-shaped” designed batteries.
Batteries are among the most difficult components to manufacture because of their chemical structure, which often means that most firms stick to a traditional rectangular shape.
However, as devices get thinner and pack increasingly complex internals, companies are looking at ways to optimise inside space by tweaking the shape of batteries, too.
iFixit
Apple has already experimented with the L-shape (it features inside the iPhone X); with this manufacturing process, two separate lithium cells are juxtaposed with one another to form a shape that resembles the letter “L,” and take advantage of all available space.
Kuo also recently suggested that Apple will debut three new iPhones next year: A successor to the current iPhone X, still at 5.8-inches, and a bigger, Plus-sized, 6.5-inch version. They will both come with organic light-emitting diode displays, and use an optimised version of the L-shaped batteries’ technology.
There will also be a third, “budget” option: It will sport an all-screen design, like the iPhone X, and will even have a TrueDepth camera-wielding notch; however, to cut costs, Apple will stick to a liquid-crystal (LCD) display, and also a traditional rectangular battery.
In his note, Kuo gave an estimate of what he expects the new batteries to be like after Apple optimises the manufacturing process with its partners Unitech, Compeq, and Unimicron.
The 5.8-inch version will reportedly move from this year’s 2,716mAh cell inside the iPhone X to a bigger unit between 2,900 and 3,000mAh, while the wider sibling could sport a much larger cell, ranging between 3,300 and 3,400mAh.

The LCD, 6.1-inch option will instead carry a battery that’s believed to be between 2,850 and 2,950mAh; that would make it about the size of the second-gen 5.8-inch iPhone X, despite having a larger overall footprint.
On the other hand, the similarly sized 6.5-inch iPhone X might have a battery that’s 350 to 450mAh larger than the LCD iPhone’s, which might make overall battery life a significant point of advantage over the cheaper option.
