From blockbuster releases like Monster Hunter World and Resident Evil 2 Remake, to nostalgia hits like the Beat ‘Em Up Bundle and Mega Man 11, Capcom feels like a company that can do no wrong.

This is a trend that looks certain to continue with the excellent Devil May Cry 5, which has a March 8 release date on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Devil May Cry 5 features the same razor-sharp action the series is famous for, as the demon-hunting duo of Dante and Nero return with an arsenal of swords, guns and robotic weaponry.

But Devil May Cry 5 also introduces an intriguing new playable character named V, who is described by game director Hideaki Itsuno and producer Matt Walker as the catalyst for the events of the new game, and one of the reasons DMC 5 was developed in the first place.

After slaying a boatload of demons with the enigmatic new character, I’m happy to report that Devil May 5’s newest addition is really V. good!

Equipped with a book of poetry, a cane and three demonic familiars, V isn’t your average Devil May Cry playable character.

He’s not the most nimble fighter, he isn’t a great swordsman and he can’t take much in the way of punishment. 

“Upon first glance, he does seem like a pretty complex character,” Itsuno and Walker explain.

“There’s a lot going on with him, because he’s got these familiars, he’s got the book and he has to go in for the last hit. There’s a lot going on there. But, we’ve balanced him to be a pretty powerful character.”

V’s power comes from his ability to summon familiars to do his fighting. And if you keep your distance while mashing the action buttons, you’ll start to see similarities between V and DMC stalwarts like Dante.

Indeed, as Itsuno points out, V’s familiar Shadow is essentially his melee attack, while Griffin is an approximation of his ranged attack. Then there’s his Devil Trigger, which summons a colossal demon called Nightmare to wreak destruction.

“If you’ve played Devil May Cry before, you may recognise these enemies from past games,” Itsuno reveals.

But the biggest difference between V and Dante is that our Devil May Cry newbie carries a book of William Blake poetry into battle!

Poetry readings in a Devil May Cry game? It’s not something we ever expected to see, but it does have an interesting and rather useful upshot.

Itsuno explains more: “What you can do is pull that out and read it at any time, particularly during a battle. The closer you are to the enemy as you’re reading that book, the faster your devil trigger gauge will fill up.

“But, you can only walk while you’re reading that book, so there’s this kind of risk vs reward element to it.”

With fighting familiars, a fondness for poetry and an upgradeable cane used to deliver death blows to dazed enemies, Devil May Cry 5’s new character is V. intriguing, V. unique and really V. good.

Look, Wi-Fi still kind of sucks. And marketing excesses aside, its worst problems all revolve around airtime distribution among multiple devices.

Unlike LTE (the protocol cellular data uses), 802.11 WI-Fi is a protocol with no central management, which leaves all nearby devices duking it out for airtime like angry, unsupervised toddlers. There’s only so much you can do to fix this problem without radically overhauling and replacing 802.11 itself—but as new 802.11 protocols emerge, they do their best.

A brief overview of the alphabet soup

If you don’t deal with this stuff for a living, it’s easy to get lost in all the different Wi-Fi protocols in the ether today. New additions have been released in sort of alphabetical order, but some are backwards-compatible and some aren’t. Some are “mainstream” and have broad consumer device support, and some are offshoot technologies rarely to be seen in anything you can buy at a big box store. It’s kind of a mess.

Several cutting-edge J-20 fighter jets have made a rare appearance in China, performing at the opening of the country’s largest airshow. The planes have proved to be truly “stealthy,” mostly avoiding the camera since their launch.

The airshow kicked off in the coastal city of Zhuhai on Tuesday and will last until the end of the week. Three 5th-generation J-20 fighter jets performed at the opening ceremony, providing an unique opportunity to take videos and snap pictures of the secretive Chinese aircraft.

The cutting-edge planes are seen flying in formation, making sharp high-speed turns and showing off amazing agility. The machines then break the formation and perform tricky solo stunts.

The J-20 has been in development since the late 2000s and was officially unveiled back in 2016, making a very brief appearance at an airshow. The planes entered service in March 2017, yet the stealthy aircraft is still rarely seen in public. Apart from J-20s, an upgraded J-10B fighter jet has also performed during the airshow’s opening ceremony.

In April, Carnival launched its latest cruise ship, the Carnival Horizon, the most recent addition to its line of “Vista class” ships.

The Carnival Horizon, the 26th ship in the company’s fleet, departed from Barcelona, Spain on April 2, 2018 for its initial cruise. It then held a summer schedule of four-day Bermuda and eight-day Caribbean sailings out of New York. Beginning on September 22, the Carnival Horizon will begin docking at Miami for a year-round schedule of six-day and eight-day Caribbean cruises. 

“In addition to the many exciting innovations previously introduced on Carnival Vista, Carnival Horizon offers some new one-of-a-kind features and attractions that make this ship truly special allowing our guests to create a lifetime of wonderful vacation memories,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line, in a statement.

Carnival Cruise Line has been named “America’s Most Trusted Cruise Line” by Reader’s Digest four years in a row. 

Carnival Horizon introduces multiple novel additions to the cruise ship line. Most notable is its Dr. Seuss-themed outdoor water-park, as well as its unique bike-ride-in-the-sky activity called SkyRide. There is also an IMAX theater onboard, spa cabins, Cuban-themed state-rooms and bars, Guy Fieri-inspired burger and BBQ restaurants.

Virtually every major US carrier offers one or more free services (however temporary) with at least one of its plans, so how is Sprint going to compete? By including more services, naturally. The carrier has launched an Unlimited Premium plan that, for $ 90 per month, adds Amazon Prime and Lookout Premium Plus security on top of the Hulu and Tidal services you get with the Unlimited Plus plan. You’re ostensibly saving about $ 480 per year versus subscribing to all those extras on your own. The wireless access itself has been upgraded, too.

It’s still not unlimited in the strictest sense of the word, but you do get more for your money. Premium gives you 50GB of LTE hotspot use at LTE speeds instead of the 15GB you get with Plus, and you won’t face a cap on LTE data when traveling to Canada or Mexico.

Sprint’s strategy is fairly clear: it’s hoping to both upsell you to a pricier plan and, crucially, give you a strong reason to stay with its service. Jump to another carrier and the costs of access to Prime, Hulu and Tidal shoot through the roof — you might stay simply because it’s too expensive to leave.

Even so, it’s potentially a better deal than at other networks if you’re looking for discounts on third-party services. Verizon (our parent company) only provides six months of ‘free’ Apple Music service and 500GB of its in-house cloud storage. AT&T focuses on bundling its live TV service and gives you a ‘perk’ that can include streaming music. T-Mobile, meanwhile, is sticking to free Netflix as its hook. So long as you don’t mind Sprint’s particular mix of services or its local network quality, it might be the better pick if you were going to subscribe to Prime no matter what.

Turing may have gone bankrupt without shipping a single unit of its much-hyped smartphone, but that isn’t stopping it from promising another handset. The company has unveiled the HubblePhone (yes, named after the space telescope), and it’s even more outlandish than the first. The design would include dual display “decks,” one of which would swivel out to help with video recording and similar tasks — a good thing, too, since it would revolve around a 60-megapixel main camera tucked into a cylindrical section. There would even be notches on the displays with more cameras, including dual variable-aperture 12MP sensors and a depth camera on the main deck as well as a 12MP sensor on the upper deck. And that’s just the start of the ambitious claims.

The hardware would supposedly run on the (still unannounced) Snapdragon 855 in each section, complete with separate batteries, and it would hop on the AI bandwagon. Turing is promising an “emotional machine-intelligence chip” that would provide a “next-gen mobile gaming experience” through mixed reality. You could even use lip reading to issue spoken commands without broadcasting your intentions, according to the company. And of course, you could expect wish-list features like 5G data and a scroll wheel.

You’d have to wait a while for the phone to ship, since it’s not supposed to arrive until the first quarter of 2020 for a staggering $ 2,749 (how Turing calculated that price when some of its components don’t even exist yet, we don’t know). You might have to wait longer still depending on where you live, since Turing isn’t guaranteeing some releases until June or later that year. We’ll be honest, though: it will be surprising if this phone ever ships, let alone on time. Even if all the technology pans out, a lot can change in the space of a year and a half. We wouldn’t count on those changes working out in Turing’s favor, especially given its track record.
