NEVS, the Chinese-Swedish company that acquired the main assets of Saab in 2012, has launched production of its rebadged 9-3 all-electric sedan at its new factory Tianjin, China, calling it “an important milestone in implementing NEVS vision to shape mobility for a more sustainable future and to start delivering EVs to our partners.”

NEVS, short for National Electric Vehicle Sweden, says its annual production capacity at the new plant is 50,000 electric vehicles in phase one and 220,000 in the second phase.

NEVS showed its Saab 9-3-based EVs at CES Asia in Shanghai in June, and it’s based on a vehicle first introduced way back in 2002. It features a driving range of about 186 miles, an in-cabin air filtration system that it says removes up to 99 percent of air particulates (critical for badly polluted Chinese cities), in-car WiFi, smartphone connectivity and are capable of over-the-air software updates. NEVS is not allowed to use the Saab brand name after Saab AB, the still-operating aircraft manufacturer and defense company that used to be the parent of the famous Swedish auto brand, revoked it amid NEVS’ financial difficulties several years ago.

In previous press releases, NEVS claimed it has received thousands of pre-orders from various companies in China, signed a $ 12 billion agreement to collaborate with EV leasing company Panda New Energy for 150,000 cars, and has a deal to let the Turkish government use the intellectual property rights for the Saab 9-3 (but not its name) to develop a new Turkish brand.

In the new release, NEVS says it is developing three generations of EV powertrains at R&D facilities in Tianjin and Trollhattan, Sweden, with the second and third generations being developed with Chinese ride-sharing behemoth Didi Chuxing. Along with Didi, it’s also working with the Global Energy Interconnection Corp. on a joint venture to provide service and infrastructure for electric vehicles for ride-sharing services.

The company also said, in its Facebook post above, that it plans to launch mobility pilot programs in select European cities in 2020.

National Electric Vehicle Sweden, or NEVS, isn’t just an automobile company, it’s a mobility company. And in planning for the future of mobility, NEVS unveiled the InMotion concept at CES Asia in Shanghai. The self-driving concept previews what a Level 5 autonomous vehicle could look like. It made its debut alongside the Saab-based all-electric NEVS 9-3 sedan and 9-3X wagon.

NEVS sees the electric InMotion serving as a form of public transportation and not as a vehicle to be purchased for personal use. To give users a personal experience, the concept is tied in to a mobile-phone application that is able to store each user’s personal settings for his or her InMotion ride. From the app, users can adjust the interior lighting, climate-control settings, and seat position. Along with basic seat adjustments, the seats can also be arranged in one of three ways: a Private setup, a Social arrangement, or a Meeting grouping. Driving duties are left completely to the InMotion, which is devoid of a steering wheel or pedals.

While the InMotion’s completely autonomous nature brings tears to our driving-loving eyes, the concept’s styling gives us hope that self-driving cars will at least offer some sense of exterior style. Unlike the Volkswagen Group’s Sedric autonomous concept, the InMotion is a surprisingly dynamic-looking vehicle with a cabin design that is more than just a simple box. It’s a small drop of lemonade to be found even though this high-tech concept makes the human driver essentially obsolete.

It has been more than five years since Saab Automobile ceased to exist. Yet now the company that is in possession of most of the remains, National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS), is ramping up to revive one of the brand’s mothballed designs from Trollhättan—the 9-3—as a China-built electric car.

NEVS has fashioned itself not just an automaker but—lip-sync with us, please—a mobility company. It has launched a pilot program in Tianjin, China, that involves yet-to-be-detailed mobility services that will involve car-sharing and possibly ride-hailing services.

Although this is sounding a lot like Lynk & Co, the effort from China’s Geely that employs fresh-looking vehicles engineered via Saab’s longtime Swedish rival, Volvo (owned by Geely), and available through a slick car-sharing interface, the NEVS effort likely will feel a bit less state of the art. Its services will center around two vehicles that NEVS hopes to build in China: the 9-3 sedan and the 9-3X wagon. Both appear much like the 9-3 that made its debut for the 2003 model year with extensive input from General Motors and its Opel unit. As such, they have a strong resemblance to a generation of GM vehicles that have long since gone out of production. One thing the NEVS cars won’t include is the Saab badge; NEVS didn’t gain the right to use that.

NEVS 9-3X EV concept

NEVS first showed the 9-3 EV in prototype form in August 2014. Since then, the company completed a reorganization and broke ground on production and R&D facilities in Tianjin.

The new 9-3 EV has a claimed driving range of 186 miles. It will also include an integrated Wi-Fi hotspot, over-the-air software updates, remote tracking capabilities for fleets, and a smartphone app for battery management.

There are no other specs and very little information about the mobility pilot program so far, but the company says that more details will be released next week, at CES Asia in Shanghai.

The company claims it already has 150,000 orders for the 9-3 EV in China. If it ever arrives to the United States, it’ll merely be an aged design from an unknown brand. With electrified vehicles and mobility a technology mantra for nearly every automaker in the years ahead, NEVS is going to need more than Saab’s tooling and spare parts to make a mark.

National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS) have been working on creating EVs based on its Saab assets for years. We heard back in 2015 that we’d have an EV based on the 9-3 this year, and now we’re finally getting to see the results. NEVS has unveiled its 9-3 and 9-3X EV concepts, which it will use in a mobility project in Tianjin, China.

NEVS is showing the 9-3 EVs at CES Asia in Shanghai on June 7-9, where it will also provide more details about the cars, its Tianjin project, and future plans for the brand. As for Tianjin, NEVS will provide the cars and the services for carsharing and ride-hailing programs in the city. For that project, NEVS is collaborating with Tianjin Binhai Hi-tech Industrial Development Area (THT), which is the industrial park where its shared factory (with joint venture partner Dongfeng) and R&D center are located.

NEVS President Mattias Bergman says, “We are excited by this great opportunity to develop smart, sustainable mobility solutions together with a progressive city as Tianjin, and develop them in full scale with real people in real life situations, with the vision to create a future integrated urban mobility solution.”

As for the 9-3 EVs, they’re not much different in appearance from the GM-era Saabs, but they have NEVS badging (NEVS doesn’t have rights to the Saab trademark). They have a driving range of about 186 miles, offer in-car Wi-Fi, smartphone connectivity, and can get over-the-air software updates. NEVS says the cars are equipped with a “world-class” cabin air filter, which helps keep harmful particulates out of the car (important in the polluted urban centers China is working to improve). They’re being built in China, and are expected to hit the roads there in 2018.
