  • Dennis Hof has been elected to the Nevada state assembly even though he died three weeks ago.
  • Hof, a pimp who owned several legal brothels in Nevada, died in October but got almost 70% of the vote against his Democratic challenger.
  • Hof called himself “The Trump of Pahrump” and said his support was similar to the support Trump continued to receive after his “Access Hollywood” tape was released.
  • Hof’s platform was largely conservative, as he looked to expand gun rights and vowed to take a tough stance on immigration.

A pimp who was inspired by Donald Trump to get involved in politics has been elected to Nevada’s state assembly even though he died three weeks ago.

Dennis Hof, a reality-television star and pimp who owned several brothels, had been running for Nevada’s state legislature when he was found dead on October 16, two days after this 72nd birthday.

Lake Tahoe

There’s a big adventure out on the west coast just waiting to be had. (Image: GETTY)

I turned my back on the Las Vegas strip and instead ventured north for the first part of my whistle-stop, five-day tour, heading to Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

If you dropped New York’s Empire State Building into the water, it wouldn’t break the surface, so it’s safe to say you won’t touch the bottom if you take a dip.

Lake Tahoe is 76 miles round, 12 miles wide and 22 miles long, and it never freezes, not even when the ground is white with snow.

It’s not great for a Christmas paddle, but the warm summers make it a hot spot for water sports.

After plastering on the factor 50, I hopped aboard a kayak on Sand Harbor Beach and began my paddle to Thunderbird Lodge, located on the east shore.

The iconic property belonged to George Whittell Jr., one of the richest men in California in the roaring 20s. With his enormous inheritance he created this luxury lakeside home, complete with hidden doorways, an underground tunnel and a room for Bill the lion cub, one of his favourite companions.

As you paddle across, the views towards the snow-capped mountains are breathtaking.

Horseback riding is also an exciting lakeside pastime, and even though I was a complete novice, I relished the chance to trot through the trees.

Waved off by the cowboys at Zephyr Cove Stables ($ 50 per hour at zephyrcovestable.com), my trusty steed Silver took me up through the forest for a bird’s-eye view over the water.

At about 2,000 metres above sea level, it’s a long way down.

The next part of my adventure through Nevada took me to Reno, an hour by car from Lake Tahoe. Known as “the biggest little city in the world”, it used to be a magnet for gamblers who lived too far from the big lights of Vegas.

These days, there’s plenty of other reasons to head here – not least whizzing down the Truckee River (which runs right through town) in a blow-up raft, holding on for dear life through the raging rapids!

But if you do fancy a flutter, check into the Eldorado hotel, which has a whole floor full of slot machines and tables dealing the decks for blackjack, poker, craps and roulette.

Nevada is also a place with an interesting history, as I found the next day on a trip to the nearby Carson Valley, a flat expanse of land east of Lake Tahoe.

Nevada’s oldest settlement, Genoa, was founded by the Mormons in 1851, but has another interesting claim to fame – it holds the record for the longest and most expensive telegraph cable in American history.

It’s only two blocks wide, but the town has a staggering 10 monuments to celebrate its heroes.

I took a peek inside the state’s oldest drinking den, Genoa Bar and Saloon, which was a hotspot for travellers and locals alike.

The ‘no horses’ sign is a more recent addition, reminding visitors of the cowboys that passed through its doors.

But if you really want a taste of the wild west, head to Virginia City, just 40 minutes from Genoa, a well-preserved mining boomtown that sprang up with the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode – the first major silver deposit discovery in the US.

Nearly all of this legendary mining town’s buildings are original and as I walked along the wood-clad sidewalks, I felt like I’d stepped onto the set of TV show Westworld.

Only 1,000 people live in Virginia City and most have embraced its history by wearing their cowboy boots and hats and pistols on their hips.

The Bucket of Blood Saloon is the hub of the town, a bar that gained its gory name one night when a bad brawl saw staff tip buckets of blood into the street.

I visited during the annual Taste of the Comstock, an event that blends food tasting and restaurant tours with Comstock-era history and demonstrations – the perfect end to my tour of this surprising state.

‘Qualification flight’: Pentagon test-drops upgraded nuke from B-2 stealth bomber over Nevada https://briefnews.eu/qualification-flight-pentagon-test-drops-upgraded-nuke-from-b-2-stealth-bomber-over-nevada/ https://briefnews.eu/qualification-flight-pentagon-test-drops-upgraded-nuke-from-b-2-stealth-bomber-over-nevada/#respond Mon, 02 Jul 2018 05:18:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/qualification-flight-pentagon-test-drops-upgraded-nuke-from-b-2-stealth-bomber-over-nevada/ The US Air Force has tested the B61-12 nuclear bomb by dropping a dud from a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber over Nevada, as part of an ambitious project to extend the service life of the bomb, introduced in 1968, by another 20 years.

“The Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) and the US Air Force completed two non-nuclear system qualification flight tests of the B61-12 gravity bomb on June 9 at Tonopah Test Range in Nevada,” the Department of Energy announced last week. “These tests are the first such end-to-end qualification tests on a B-2A Spirit Bomber for the B61-12.”

The experiments included running trials on “NNSA designed bomb assembly and US Air Force acquired tail-kit,” as part of the effort to evaluate the “aircraft’s capability to deliver the weapon and the weapon’s non-nuclear function.”

Different versions of the B-61 nuclear gravity bomb have been deployed across the US and NATO bases for five decades. While, over the years, the Pentagon produced numerous modifications to the deadly weapon, B61 variants of 3, 4, 7, and 11 remain in service.

The Pentagon is currently in the middle of the $ 7.6 billion ‘B61-12 Life Extension Program’, which aims to “refurbish, reuse, or replace all of the bomb’s nuclear and non‐nuclear components” and extend the service life of the B61 by at least 20 years. The “first production unit” is scheduled for completion in 2020.

Besides deploying B61-12 on modern and future long range bombers, the Pentagon is making sure the bomb can be easily used by F-15E fighter jets, and wants to integrate it with the F-35 Lightning II fifth generation combat jets, raising concerns it is creeping towards lowering the threshold for tactical use of nuclear weapons.

After former President Barack Obama authorized a nuclear modernization program, Trump revised it into an ambitious 30-year project that would cost at least $ 1.2 trillion to complete. Some $ 800 billion will be spent on maintaining nuclear forces, while about $ 400 billion will be spent on modernizing them, under the pretext of an existential need to deter “revisionist powers” such as China and Russia.

Russia has repeatedly expressed concerns over a loosening of nuclear launch guidelines under Trump’s Nuclear Posture Review (NPR), which says that non-nuclear attacks which result in mass casualties or target key infrastructure constitute enough grounds for a US nuclear retaliation. Moscow also warned that deploying more B61 bombs to NATO bases in Europe would also violate the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

READ MORE: US nukes in Europe & low strike threshold are direct violations of non-proliferation treaty – Moscow

Meanwhile, to justify taxpayer spending on nuclear upgrades, Washington constantly points the finger at Russia, accusing it of threatening its neighbors and US national security. “Russia has demonstrated its willingness to use force to alter the map of Europe and impose its will on its neighbors, backed by implicit and explicit nuclear first-use threats,” the NPR report claims, despite Russian military doctrine clearly stating that nukes can only be used in response to a nuclear attack, or when the state’s very existence is put under threat by a massive conventional attack.

Nevada greenlights 1st execution in 12 years, furthering death row inmate’s quest https://briefnews.eu/nevada-greenlights-1st-execution-in-12-years-furthering-death-row-inmates-quest/ https://briefnews.eu/nevada-greenlights-1st-execution-in-12-years-furthering-death-row-inmates-quest/#respond Thu, 21 Jun 2018 06:34:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nevada-greenlights-1st-execution-in-12-years-furthering-death-row-inmates-quest/ Nevada has officially scheduled the execution of Scott Raymond Dozier, 47, for July 11. While Dozier has repeatedly stated the wish to die, the sentence was delayed due to ethical concerns over an unusual mix of drugs to be used.

Dozier will become the first death row inmate in Nevada jails to be executed in over a decade. The last time capital punishment was carried out through lethal injection in the state was in 2006, a year before Dozier, also known as Chad Wyatt, was put on the death row.

While Dozier, who was convicted of two murders, has dropped all of his appeals, saying in his multiple interviews with US media that he deserves death and looks forward to it, his unusual case for execution was stalled due to the state Department of Corrections’ failure to obtain the appropriate drugs.

However, on Wednesday, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Santina announced that there are no more legal hurdles impeding the execution, which is set to be carried out on July 11.

While many civil rights groups consider the death penalty to be incompatible with human rights law in principle, this time the debate focused not on the legality of the punishment itself, but on the way it is performed.

The main concern put forward by American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), arguably the most influential civil rights organization in the US, was that Dozier might die in excruciating pain, as the new mix of drugs he will be subjected to has never been tested before.

The deadly mix in question consists of the muscle paralytic cisatracurium, sedative diazepam, which is marketed as the prescription drug Valium, and Fentanyl, an extremely potent opioid used as a pain medication. The latter has become notorious as one of the main drivers of the opioid epidemic in America.

Back in November, a judge in Las Vegas blocked Dozier’s execution from going forward after heeding arguments from the ACLU that the paralytic drug could cover up the convict’s sufferings during the execution. Making its case, the advocacy group pointed out that it is illegal to use cisatracurium for euthanizing pets in Nevada.

However, the same Clark County District Court judge, Jennifer Togliatti, who opposed the execution in November, signed the death warrant on Tuesday, paving the way for Dozier’s state-administered and, apparently, much-coveted death. The U-turn follows a May ruling by Nevada’s Supreme Court, which overturned Togliatti’s November decision. The state Supreme Court decided at the time that the challenges to the execution method were “procedurally improper.”

Unveiling the execution date for the first time on Wednesday, Santina brushed off concerns by some rights groups that the medication that is needed to complete the procedure has long expired due to the unwillingness of pharmaceutical companies to provide fresh drugs for the purpose.

“We have what we need to complete the execution order. The same three drugs. We have some that are not expired,” she told AP, noting that while the shelf life of some of the drugs has ended, the state still has enough medication that will not expire until November 30.

The ACLU has predictably taken issue with the latest court ruling, noting that Nevada’s Supreme Court has failed to determine if “Mr. Dozier would experience extreme pain, or if he would suffocate to death, or if this protocol is constitutionally adequate.”

Dozier himself, meanwhile, will hardly have any objections. The man repeatedly told media that he did not have any intention of fighting his execution and even would be glad if his death brings some kind of joy to the parents of the man he killed in 2002.

“If this can bring them some gratification, that’s awesome,” Dozier said in an interview with the Marshall Project earlier this year.

Dozier says that it does not matter for him if the execution is painful or not.

“If they tell me, ‘Listen, there’s a good chance it’s going to be a real miserable experience for those two hours before you actually expire,’ I’m still going to do it. I’m not going to waver on this,” he said last year.

Dozier was found guilty of murdering fellow drug dealer Jeremiah Miller in 2002, supposedly over a $ 12,000 debt. He then dismembered Millar’s body, stuffing it into a suitcase and, according to his own words, put the severed man’s head into a bucket of concrete. During the trial, Dozier said that he did not feel remorse for killing Milller, although he felt sorry for his parents.

He was also convicted of the murder of 26-year-old Jasen Green in Arizona, whose body was discovered in a plastic container in 2001. Dozier was sentenced to 22 years in prison for that crime.

WATCH: Heart-stopping moment THIS is spotted in busy lake in Nevada https://briefnews.eu/watch-heart-stopping-moment-this-is-spotted-in-busy-lake-in-nevada/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-heart-stopping-moment-this-is-spotted-in-busy-lake-in-nevada/#respond Tue, 19 Jun 2018 20:12:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-heart-stopping-moment-this-is-spotted-in-busy-lake-in-nevada/

The viral video, filmed in Lake Tahoe in Nevada, captured a typical beach scene.

Mountains can be seen in the distance while paddle boarding and canoeing tourists make the most of the beautiful water.

But the shocking scene captured something rather unusual in the water as onlookers filmed.

While they didn’t seem to be threatening anyone, the terrifying creatures are known for being rather ferocious animals.

A family of three black bears are seen frolicking in the water.

Close to the shoreline, a black bear was caught playing with her two black bear cubs.

They can be territorial when it comes to protecting their family, although didn’t seem interested in any of the people around them.

Three people watch it from their paddleboards before they decide to try and paddle away.

It may have been a wise move seeing as bears can be dangerous creatures.

While they seem scary, black bears are the worlds most common bear species and are not as dangerous as grizzly bears.

The video has had over 87,000 views on Imgur already, with many people commenting on the surprising scene.

One remarked: “I’m not sure why but I am very bothered by the fact that the one person closest to the bears has their back turned the entire time.”

A user who couldn’t resist a pun said: “Hope the water is bearable”.

Another explained why it isn’t uncommon to see black bears near people.

They wrote: “According to a ranger in the Smokies, Mama black bears with cubs will stay close to humans cause male bears are scared of people.”

Bears have been caught on camera in very surprising situations when they are around humans.

One man was shocked to find two bear cubs in his car when opening the door.

He quickly swung it open before they both leapt out and fled the scene.

Another man decided to play with two grizzly bears by playing peek a boo.

Thankfully he is an expert and is known as Jim Kowalczik who own a wildlife rehabilitation centre in New York.

$800,000 in dimes spills from truck on Nevada highway https://briefnews.eu/800000-in-dimes-spills-from-truck-on-nevada-highway/ https://briefnews.eu/800000-in-dimes-spills-from-truck-on-nevada-highway/#respond Thu, 10 May 2018 23:17:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/800000-in-dimes-spills-from-truck-on-nevada-highway/

It’s a problem that comes up every time an armored truck spills cash on a highway, as one did just last week. People jump out of their cars to chase the fluttering money around, grab it up and disappear. How to deal with such larcenous human behavior? How about transporting the money in a form that’s not worth picking up? How about dimes? How about $ 800,000 worth of dimes?

Yes, this week’s money spill involves 8 million portraits of FDR, bursting forth from a truck that ran into a guardrail on I-15 about 50 miles outside of Las Vegas. The accident happened around 3:30 a.m. Thursday and took until 10:30 to clean up. The dimes were in bags, of course, but some of the bags split open.

Why dimes? The truck was under contract with the U.S. Treasury Department. Strange that dimes were the only coins aboard, but can we then assume Treasury runs separate trucks for pennies, nickels, and quarters? With maybe pickup trucks for JFK 50-cent pieces and Sacagawea dollars?

The driver and a passenger were treated at a hospital for injuries and released. The driver was cited for the accident.

At it wasn’t a big puddle of chocolate or some slime eels.

Google Earth reveals weird triangle in Nevada desert – but what is it hiding? https://briefnews.eu/google-earth-reveals-weird-triangle-in-nevada-desert-but-what-is-it-hiding/ https://briefnews.eu/google-earth-reveals-weird-triangle-in-nevada-desert-but-what-is-it-hiding/#respond Fri, 06 Apr 2018 22:29:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-earth-reveals-weird-triangle-in-nevada-desert-but-what-is-it-hiding/

Google Earth, created in 2001, has opened up the world to people to explore from the comfort of their own homes.

By mapping the globe, the most beautiful natural landmarks and sightings can be seen with the click of a button.

Many use it to confirm their own conspiracy theories, such as extraterrestrial lifeforms or the missing MH370 plane.

The latter was thought to have recently been discovered on the website.

A new sighting could have confirmed the presence of the Illuminati.

Found in the desert of Wittmann, Arizona, is a large triangle printed on the ground.

On closer inspection, it appears to be a road attached to a highway.

Yet the equilateral triangle doesn’t lead to anywhere, making many think it symbolises something else entirely.

Triangle symbols are often linked to the Illuminati, as well as theories that they are secretly leading the world from behind the scenes and are depicted in a number of mysterious symbols.

The triangle symbol is often called the Eye of Providence, representing the omniscience of God watching over.

Yet this theory has been debunked, with the triangle most likely to be a disused airbase.

Many believe it to be an Air Force Base called Luke Aux #4.

It was closed in the late 1950’s and has since become overgrown with trees and hedges since.

The runways can barely be seen with a number of people who have visited the site reporting nothing of consequence.

The airport was thought to be named after Frank Luke, an American fighter ace who was the first airman to receive the Medal of Honour in 1918.

Google Earth has captured a number of bases that many may not have realised exist.

One called Area 6 can be found in Las Vegas, just a few miles from Area 51.

Whilst Area 51 is often believed to hide secrets about alien lifeforms, according to conspiracy theories, Area 6 is still unknown.

It is most likely a military training and testing base what with its secluded location.

The security surrounding the base, however, is not as strict as it is at Area 51.

On Wednesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted a picture on Instagram of two Tesla Semis at the Sparks, Nevada Gigafactory. The trucks are apparently full of battery packs and are making their way to the Tesla factory in Fremont, California.

“First production cargo trip of the Tesla Semi heavy-duty truck, carrying battery packs from the Gigafactory in the Nevada mountains to the car factory in California,” Musk wrote.

That marks a milestone for the electric truck, which Tesla announced last November. The company hopes to start selling the trucks to other companies, including Walmart, DHL, and JB Hunt Transportation Systems by 2019, but it said last year that the first trucks would be used internally. (In fact, Tesla said in November that it was already using more discrete, prototype versions of its Semis to haul batteries from Nevada to the California coast.)

Sierra Nevada spacecraft completes first test flight in 4 years https://briefnews.eu/sierra-nevada-spacecraft-completes-first-test-flight-in-4-years/ https://briefnews.eu/sierra-nevada-spacecraft-completes-first-test-flight-in-4-years/#respond Sun, 12 Nov 2017 21:18:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sierra-nevada-spacecraft-completes-first-test-flight-in-4-years/

If Sierra Nevada is going to fulfill supply missions for the International Space Station and the UN, it’ll have to prove that its Dream Chaser spacecraft is ready to fly… and it just took a big step in that direction. The company has revealed that Dream Chaser completed a glide test flight on November 11th, launching from a helicopter and landing at California’s Edwards Air Force Base. Notably, it’s this vehicle’s first flight in 4 years, and its first successful landing demonstration — when this ship last flew in 2013, stuck landing gear forced a rough touchdown.

Dream Chaser was carrying the same space-grade avionics that it’ll use for ISS missions, Sierra Nevada said. More information about the flight should follow on November 13th.

The successful flight isn’t as dramatic as a full-fledged mission launching atop a rocket (those aren’t expected to start until 2019), but it’s a crucial milestone all the same. It proves that, on a basic level, Dream Chaser can live up to its role as a reusable cargo ship. And while it won’t be the only vehicle that can return safely to Earth, it’ll be particularly important for science. Unlike a capsule that might land in a remote area, Dream Chaser can quickly return experiments to waiting researchers.
