Koenigsegg doesn’t just want combustion-powered supercars to compete with EVs in terms of raw performance… it wants to compete in eco-friendliness, too. In a chat with Top Gear, company founder Christian von Koenigsegg said he was working with National Electric Vehicle Sweden to develop a €1 million ($ 1.15 million) hybrid supercar that was “completely CO2 neutral.” The solution, he said, was melding the automaker’s camless “freevalve” combustion engine tech with electric assistance. You could cold-start the vehicle using pure alcohol, for instance.

The result would be a “lightweight, sporty” car that would be environmentally responsible, but wouldn’t be quite so dependent on electric power. Christian predicted a shortage of battery cells when Tesla, VW and other brands want to mass-produce electric vehicles — this would help Koenigsegg avoid those shortfalls.

The executive didn’t provide too many more details, but stressed this would look “very obviously” like his brand’s iconic cars while remaining relatively affordable compared to no-holds-barred models like the Agera RS and Regera. If all goes well, it’ll be ready by 2020.

It’s an ambitious plan, and it may face plenty of challenges beyond the audacity of the technology itself. For one, Tesla’s next-gen Roadster is poised to deliver many of the thrills of supercars, including in historically weak areas for EVs like top speed and sustained performance. Koenigsegg also has to show that it can grow from delivering just 20 cars per year to the hundreds it’s expecting. Still, the company might have a realistic shot. This is the company that made the Regera, a 1,500HP supercar with no gearbox — it knows how to wring unusual abilities out of combustion engines.

The idea of a unified European army was proposed by Macron earlier this month, with the French president insisting it is necessary in order to protect the continent from the likes of China, Russia, and “even the United States of America.”

Merkel was quick to put her support behind the proposal, saying that such an army would show the world that “there will never again be war between European nations.”

But US President Donald Trump isn’t so sure about that. He lashed out at the notion after Macron first mentioned it, reminding him that France’s enemy in both World Wars wasn’t the US, China, or Russia – it was Germany.

“They were starting to learn German in Paris before the US came along,” Trump tweeted.

Despite the feelings of France, Germany, Austria, or any other EU member states, a European army won’t actually happen, international affairs specialist John Laughland told RT earlier this week.

“The idea of the European army is a complete fiction; there’s never been a European army and there cannot be a European army,” he said, noting that the EU cannot be legally independent from NATO unless it changes its treaties.

However, the European Commission seems to think it’s perfectly possible. A spokesman said the Commission is “delighted” by Macron and Merkel’s backing of the idea. That should perhaps come as no surprise, as Juncker himself put his support behind a European army four years ago.

“We have many times explained how we see these things. This is the Commission that wants Europe to have a meaningful defense identity,” the spokesperson said.

Shares of Snap jumped more than 2% on Tuesday after Wedbush, a formerly neutral firm that had been hesitant to make recommendations, upgraded the company amid a recent executive departure.

The social media company said Monday that its Chief Strategy Officer Imran Khan will be leaving the company, but will continue to serve in his current role to help with the transition. Company insiders and outsiders were not sorry to see Khan go, as “he had no ad or media background” and was not a “good fit in that strategy role,” Business Insider reported.

On Monday, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill mandating that the state’s utilities move to 100-percent zero-emission electricity generation by 2045. Brown also issued an executive order today requiring the state to become carbon neutral by 2045, that is, mandating that the state remove as much greenhouse gas from the atmosphere as it puts into the atmosphere.

California is the most populous state to agree to such aggressive decarbonization and only the second state to formalize such a pledge in legislation, after Hawaii. Although California has phased coal plants out of its state-wide energy mix, it still relies predominantly on natural gas for the bulk of its electricity.

The bill was passed by California’s Assembly and Senate in August. The votes weren’t a sure thing: some Republicans and Democrats worried that such an ambitious goal would lead to increased energy cost for their constituents.

Unfortunately, everyone’s brain suffers from avalanches. Indeed I can safely diagnose anyone who does not suffer from avalanches as dead. (And you thought the barriers to graduate school were intellectual?).

An avalanche in the brain is basically a small, generally inconspicuous event that triggers a massive cascade of neuronal activity. These are observed to occur without any external triggers.

So  why do they occur? It has been thought that these avalanches should confer some sort of benefit, but new research suggests that it might just be a noisy accident.

On Tuesday, the IOC declared Russia guilty of alleged state-sponsored doping, and banned the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) from competing in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Athletes who can prove they are “clean,” however, will be allowed to compete, but not under the Russian flag.

The despair and bitter disappointment were clearly visible on the faces of Russian Olympic athletes in Davos Tuesday as the IOC announced their decision. Some ground their fingers, other stared down and some left the room soon after the directives were read out.

Those who can compete are now faced with a difficult choice. On the one hand, they spent years polishing their skills and to perform on the world’s premier stage, but on the other hand, their sport spirit dictates they compete as a united national team, under the Russian flag.

Irina Avvakumova, a member of the ski jumping team, does not want to go to South Korea and perform under a neutral flag. “I do not know how other athletes will react, but I did not prepare for so many years to just go and compete without representing my country,” Avvakumova said, adding, that competing as neutral lack the “sports spirit.”

Russian snowboarder Nikolai Olyunin has not yet decided on the whether or not he is ready to compete at the 2018 Olympic Games under a neutral flag.

“The decision of the IOC did not shock me, it was all leading to this. We were ready,” Olyunin said, adding that the snowboard federation will now wait and see how the situation develops further. “No one understands how to proceed further. I would like to compete for our flag, but at the same time, I understand that what has happened is a great disrespect to our country. I don’t want to compete under a neutral flag, but I still have to think about it.”

Legendary figure skating trainer Tatyana Tarasova called the IOC’s decision to ban the Russian team as “the murder of our national sport.”

“It is such a pity that we will not perform as a team, it’s a pity, that we won’t be the most beautiful team, it’s a pity that our flags won’t be raised,” Tarasova said in Moscow Tuesday.

While most of the athletes slammed the widely anticipated IOC announcement, the heads of the various Russian sports federations urged Russians not to condemn any decisions made by individual athletes.

Two-time Olympic champion, biathlete Sergei Chepikov, urged people not to criticize the athletes who eventually decide to compete under a neutral flag at the Winter Olympics.

“These are very severe measures against our national team. I ask you not to condemn the guys who decide to come out under a neutral flag. We know that they are Russians, and we need to support them,” Chepikov was quoted as saying by Tass.

The head of the Russian Bobsled Federation Alexander Zubkov meanwhile told the news agency that he stands behind the Russian athletes.

“It was all leading to [the possibility that] our athletes will be admitted to the Olympics under a neutral status,” Zubkov said. “Now the athletes themselves must decide whether or not to go to the Games in South Korea. The management of the Bobsleigh Federation will help those athletes who want to perform in Pyeongchang.”

But not all share the same kind of patriotic sentiment. The head of the Ski Jumping Federation, Dmitry Dubrovsky, believes Russian athletes should compete under a neutral flag.

“We will defend our athletes; I will talk with them, they will have to decide on their participation themselves. I am convinced that the world sports leaders representing Russia should go and fight not only for themselves but also for others,” Dubrovsky said.

The breakfast show spoke to the mother of one schoolboy who had taken part in the BBC series No More Boys and Girls: Can Our Kids Go Gender Free? ahead of the broadcast this evening. 

While the headmistress of Lanesend Primary School, which took part in the social experiment, praised it, audiences watching at home were less convinced and took to social media to slam the concept.

One person posted on Twitter: “Those fools of parents who thinks classes should be gender-neutral really want to have a look in the mirror. Disgrace, attention-seeking!”

While a second wrote: “No they shouldn’t be gender neutral. They should just be more welcoming of children who don’t fit gender stereotypes.”

“Definitely not. I do not want my children in gender neutral environment!! Ridiculous notion,” a third angrily said.

However, there was a divide as other people thought differently and one explained: “When it comes to kids it should be about choice at the end of the day #lorraine #genderneutral.”

As another praised the idea: “Gender neutral classrooms would be great!”

A third tweeted: “Can’t wait to see @BBCTwo prog. on gender neutral schooling tonight – let’s hope it’s a step towards a more equal future for our children!”

The controversial two-part series will see Dr Javid Abelmoneim taking over Year 3 at the school on the Isle of Wight, as he explores how boys and girls are treated differently in the classroom.

He will aim to remove any differences through gender neutral treatment in a bid to even out the academic achievement gaps in the pupils’ education.

No More Boys and Girls” Can Our Kids Go Gender Free? airs on BBC Two tonight at 9pm.

Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV at 8.30am.
