Comedy Central is turning off the lights at Lights Out With David Spade: The late-night talk show won’t return to the cable network after its current run, according to our sister site Variety.

Comedy Central will, however, shop the show around to other networks and platforms. Production was shut down on Lights Out due to the coronavirus pandemic — the last traditional episode aired March 12 — but Spade has been producing a digital version of the show from home. That version of Lights Out will continue to air online for the next few weeks.

Lights Out features Spade and a rotating panel of his comedian friends dissecting pop-culture news and gossip, intentionally steering clear from anything political. Debuting last July in the post-Daily Show time slot, the series has welcomed guests like Kaley Cuoco, Wayne Brady, Drew Carey, Maya Rudolph, Martin Short and many more.

TVLine’s Cable Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect the news. Will you miss Lights Out? Drop your thoughts on the cancellation in a comment below.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

“There’s something dangerous about the boredom of teenage girls.”

That line of voiceover during the opening minutes of USA Network’s edgy teen mystery drama Dare Me perfectly sums up the atmosphere of Sunday’s series premiere.

Adapted from the book of the same name by executive producer/writer Megan Abbott, the show is set in the world of a small-town high school cheerleading team, which is rocked by the arrival of new coach Colette French (Scream: The TV Series‘ Willa Fitzgerald). It’s her words above, as recounted by cheerleader Addy (The Get Down‘s Herizen Guardiola), that set the tone for the darkness to follow. As Addy’s voiceover tells us, the coach could see past the young girls’ glittery exteriors to the miseries beneath the surface. But most of all, “she could see that we were waiting, had always been waiting, for her. It was f–king beautiful… until it went too far,” Addy’s VO declares as we see her driving, her hands and phone covered in blood.

Dare Me RecapCue to three months earlier: Addy and her best friend, the team’s alpha captain Beth (Home and Away‘s Marlo Kelly), are discussing the upcoming arrival of their new coach. Beth’s not about to give up her team to some “ancient” 28-year-old who had to move back home. But Addy sees Colette, who’s had success as a competitive cheerleading coach, as a way out of her nothing hometown.

Colette immediately starts shaking things up within the team, putting the girls through their paces and pointing out their flaws, sometimes almost callously, like when she pinches a girl’s midsection and tells her to fix it. She also removes Beth from her position as the top pyramid girl, replacing her with her younger half-sister Tacy (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce‘s Alison Thornton). (Beth’s dad lives across the street with his new wife and Tacy, so Beth is extra mean to her sis, grasping her thigh so tightly that she almost topples over during the pyramid.)

Dare Me RecapMeanwhile, Addy seems to be distancing herself from Beth, causing the latter to lash out and fire off a gun while partying in the woods. (When this goes down, someone is going down on Addy, to give you a sense of how these kids are spending their free time.) Addy calms Beth, and while the two are later huddled in bed, Beth worries that “everything’s changing,” including her BFF.

Then Beth remembers that she left her phone back in the woods, so the girls go searching for it… and discover Colette having sex with the school’s Marine recruiter Sarge Will (The Vampire Diaries‘ Zach Roerig). This might not seem like a big deal since everyone is of age, but Colette is married to Matt (Imposters‘ Rob Heaps). Beth giddily videos Colette and Sarge Will in the act, while Addy exclaims to her friend that they’re not going to say anything.

“Coach told me something once. She said someday you’re going to really want something,” Addy’s voiceover recalls as the girls run through the woods. “That’s when you’ll find out who you are. But there’s a price for everything. You have to give up the old things, the things that feel easy, the things that feel safe. This is how you become strong. This is how you become a woman.”

“In the end, I couldn’t stop it. Any of it,” Addy concludes ominously.

Canada doesn’t trust social networks to warn of election interference https://briefnews.eu/canada-doesnt-trust-social-networks-to-warn-of-election-interference/ https://briefnews.eu/canada-doesnt-trust-social-networks-to-warn-of-election-interference/#respond Thu, 31 Jan 2019 05:04:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canada-doesnt-trust-social-networks-to-warn-of-election-interference/

Social networks like Facebook and Twitter have set up war rooms and disclosure systems to warn of potential election meddling, but the Canadian government doesn’t believe that’s good enough. The country’s Democratic Institutions Minister has established a panel of five politicians that will warn the public when there’s evidence of attempted interference during election periods, including the upcoming October federal election. If they believe there’s a threat, they’ll not only alert the Prime Minister, party officials and Elections Canada, they’ll hold a press conference to reveal the details to everyone.

The panel will include the Clerk of the Privy Council, the national security and intelligence advisor, and the Deputy Ministers of Global Affairs Canada, Justice and Public Safety. And while other politicians would receive briefings on details, they wouldn’t have the power to stop public disclosures.

This would be limited to serious incidents that are clearly meant to skew the election, such as a fake news video or the email hack that tried to disrupt the campaign of French presidential candidate Emmanuel Macron. Simply put, it would make disclosure a non-issue — the public would learn about interference campaigns on a timely basis, whether or not leaders or social networks are willing to talk.

There’s more in the works as well. Canadian intelligence groups are banding together to form a Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections task force (SITE for short) that would identify foreign threats to elections and help with the government response, regardless of whether or not there’s a formal election period. The country has seen the headaches caused by interference in the US and the UK, and it’s not keen to see a repeat.

COSCO’s computer networks in the Americas remained completely severed from the Internet on Thursday, almost 48 hours after the Chinese shipping giant reported it was hit by a ransomware attack.

In a statement published Thursday, COSCO officials said the failures affected networks in the US, Canada, Panama, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Chile, and Uruguay. The statement said people who wanted to reach COSCO employees in those countries should use special email addresses, many of which were hosted by Yahoo and Gmail. Attempts to reach COSCO’s US-based website were unsuccessful. COSCO officials said main business operation systems were performing stably and that ports in California and the UK remained open.

The statement—and posts on COSCO’s official Twitter and Facebook accounts—didn’t disclose the reason for the outage. The Press-Telegram of Long Beach, California, however, reported on Tuesday that the China state-owned shipping company was infected by ransomware. The report didn’t identify the name or strain of the ransomware, which generally encrypts computer hard drives and demands a payment by digital currency to decrypt it.

Verizon has agreed to fix failing copper networks and boost fiber deployment in New York, two years after state officials began investigating the quality of Verizon landline phone and broadband service.

A settlement with Verizon “will require the company to repair 54 central offices across the state, replace bad cable, defective equipment, faulty back-up batteries, and to take down 64,000 double telephone poles,” the Communications Workers of America (CWA) union said last week. “The agreement also includes increased broadband buildout to major apartment buildings in New York City and more than 30,000 homes across the state.”

Verizon reached the proposed settlement with the union, staff at the New York State Department of Public Service, and the Public Utility Law Project of New York. The four-party settlement is still subject to approval by the state Public Service Commission (PSC).

Fox Wants to Drastically Reduce Commercials on Its Networks; Is This the First Step Into a New Model? https://briefnews.eu/fox-wants-to-drastically-reduce-commercials-on-its-networks-is-this-the-first-step-into-a-new-model/ https://briefnews.eu/fox-wants-to-drastically-reduce-commercials-on-its-networks-is-this-the-first-step-into-a-new-model/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 12:20:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fox-wants-to-drastically-reduce-commercials-on-its-networks-is-this-the-first-step-into-a-new-model/ Fox commercials

Traditional broadcast media outlets have historically been slow to adapt to changes in the television industry. But at a recent private event, the ad sales chief of Fox Networks Group announced that the network is hoping to switch things up in a significant way: by cutting its ad time down to two minutes per hour by the year 2020. Read more about the new Fox commercial strategy below.

A Revolutionary Goal

The Wall Street Journal reports that Joe Marchese, the sales chief of Fox Networks Group (which includes Fox, FX, FXX, National Geographic Channel, and more), spoke at a private industry event last week and laid out his hope that the networks could reduce TV ad time to two minutes an hour by 2020.

If they manage to do that, it would be a drastic change. Nielsen, the company that’s largely responsible for measuring television ratings in the United States, says that on broadcast TV in 2017, the average amount of ad time per hour was just over 13 minutes, and on cable it was 16 minutes. Dropping to just two minutes an hour would mean abandoning the ad-supported model that’s been in place since the invention of the medium.

So How Would Fox Make Money?

If the Fox Networks Group essentially ditches television commercials, the Wall Street Journal says the networks “would likely need to charge a lot more money for the scarce inventory it has left,” and that the “shift is contingent on the industry changing the way it buys and sells media.” That’s a pretty big ask for an industry that has historically been disinclined to deviate from the status quo. But with audiences bombarded with dozens of entertainment options at all times, it seems as if Fox sees the writing on the wall and actually wants to try to get ahead of the curve a little bit instead of finally getting around to reacting to the changing landscape after it’s already collapsed under their feet.

Is This New Model Sustainable?

The report says Marchese wants to sell ads based on the audiences’ time spent with the content instead of just counting the number of views a particular piece of entertainment has. That sounds like it means the network might be trying to adopt a Hulu-style ad strategy. Think about something like The Handmaid’s Tale, which has 50-55 minute episodes and a few quick bursts of short commercials. Maybe the plan is to convince advertisers to spend more money to essentially sponsor an episode. Advertisers could then craft entire commercial campaigns for use within those ad blocks – potentially telling their own story within the story across multiple commercials per episode.

But if people are fast-forwarding through commercials using DVRs anyway, I’m not entirely sure this model will be sustainable.

An ad buyer who was at the event told the WSJ that Marchese’s comment “was sort of an aspiration or goal. Not a declaration,” but Ed Davis, the chief product officer for Fox Network Group ad sales, confirmed that “two minutes per hour is a real target for Fox, and also our challenge to the industry.” So it seems as if they’re serious about at least giving this a shot.

It’s unclear if this shift will continue unabated if Disney’s acquisition of Fox is approved, or if the Mouse House has a different plan in mind for these channels. But in an era in which audiences are flocking to streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, it’s increasingly clear that the traditional advertising model is not going to be reliable for broadcasters much longer. Will this be the first step toward innovation?

Hyundai Plans Gigabit Ethernet for Some In-Car Networks, but What Does That Mean? https://briefnews.eu/hyundai-plans-gigabit-ethernet-for-some-in-car-networks-but-what-does-that-mean/ https://briefnews.eu/hyundai-plans-gigabit-ethernet-for-some-in-car-networks-but-what-does-that-mean/#respond Mon, 29 Jan 2018 18:18:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hyundai-plans-gigabit-ethernet-for-some-in-car-networks-but-what-does-that-mean/ Hyundai-Cisco-Ethernet-logo

–

As automated and connected cars roll into dealerships over the next decade, they’ll need high-bandwidth networks to support these critical, data-hungry functions. Korean automaker Hyundai says it is committing to faster ethernet connectivity to power the core of its next-gen vehicles.

–

The Korean automaker has announced that it will “accelerate innovation, provide ‘over the air updates,’ and shorten the life cycle in bringing new capabilities to market” by using ethernet at up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbps). A collaboration with Cisco will see primarily ethernet-driven Hyundais hit the market starting in 2019.

–

Electronics in modern cars have become incredibly complex, but they’re slower—like, 10,000 times slower in data throughput—than a USB 3.1 port. Most cars connect their electronic control units (ECUs) via a controller area network, or CAN. Bosch introduced this standard in 1986 to reduce the weight and cost of heavy wiring harnesses, and it has proven to be a robust, reliable, and inexpensive network for in-car use. While initially meant for automobiles, CAN has moved into the marine, aerospace, and medical industries, where some hospital operating rooms rely on it. But CAN can’t manage adaptive suspensions and other drive-by-wire systems with precision. It also can’t process sensor data from radar, lidar, and visual cameras fast enough. For fully autonomous cars—or even for one pedestrian-detection alert—CAN just isn’t the answer.

–

As a serial interface, a CAN bus can only transmit or receive one bit of data at a time; compare this to the multiple packets of bits sent and received by your mobile phone. Speeds can top 1 megabit per second, which is essentially the gap between a 3G and 4G cellular network. CAN simply can’t keep up with sensors spewing out data greater than 100 times a second. Ethernet, by contrast, has a maximum data output that’s 1000 times faster than the fastest CAN interface.

–

But gigabit ethernet, despite how cheaply it can be embedded on computer motherboards, is expensive in a car. So far, it has been limited to infotainment systems like Jaguar Land Rover’s InControl Touch Pro and other similar uses; other leading in-car networks, such as FlexRay, have speeds of 10 megabits per second and can handle functions such as adaptive cruise control. Yet the fact remains that it’s neither simple nor cheap to make cars run as fast as our USB ports. Network security, electrical interference, cable length, and syncing dozens upon dozens of ECUs are things that keep automakers’ software developers and electrical engineers up all night.

–

–

Hyundai isn’t looking to replace CAN, nor is it suggesting the industry should. Many simple controls, such as for brake lights or window switches, will still be wired with CAN for many years to come. Until the R&D costs of ethernet (or another faster technology) come down, most cars will use a combination of CAN, FlexRay, and ethernet.
