The self-driving cars of the future will have a lot of computing power, and that means they’ll also need fast networking. So five tech and car companies have formed the formation of the Networking for Autonomous Vehicles (NAV) Alliance. The initial members for the San Jose, California-based alliance include Aquantia, Bosch, Continental, Nvidi…Read More

Twitter is down right now and not working for hundreds of users today.
Independent website Down Detector has received a surge of Twitter down reports.
Some 40 per cent of those affected are experiencing problems with the Twitter website.
While 33 per cent are experiencing issues with the iPad app and 26 per cent are having problems with the Android app.
Down Detector is an independent website which tracks outages across the globe by monitoring social mentions around specific topics.
The outage monitor started receiving reports of Twitter down around 4.20pm GMT today.
The issues may not have seemed apparent at first for many users, with The Independent reporting that timelines were being filled with old tweets.
Pages were still showing, just instead the tweets that were appearing was old content instead of new posts.
The problem suggested that feeds on Twitter weren’t updating.
This isn’t the first time that Twitter has gone down in 2018.
In January the social networking site went down for thousands of users, with Down Detector hitting a peak of over 6,000 reported issues with the service.
After the outage was over users returned to Twitter to poke fun at how they coped without the micro blogging site.
One user tweeted: “Twitter went down for about 20 minutes and I couldn’t even complain about it on Twitter.”
While another wrote: “TWITTER DOWN, GUYS. TWITTER DOWN. SOMEONE HELP. TWITTER, DON’T SCARE ME.”
One added: “When Twitter goes down and you can’t check Twitter to see if it’s just you #TwitterDown”.
And another posted: “That was the longest 7 minutes of my life #TwitterDown”.

Despite selling over 14 million of its low-cost DIY computing boards, the Raspberry Pi Foundation adheres to a slow release cycle. The company typically waits over a year to refresh its range, and even then improvements can be very subtle. That’s exactly the case with its flagship board, the Raspberry Pi 3, which has today been upgraded to offer more speed in every sense of the word.
The key improvements on the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ are its processor and networking capabilities. The Model B+ sports a 1.4GHz quad-core Broadcom BCM2837B0 processor (compared to the 1.2GHz BCM2837 chip in the Pi 3), which the company says has come as a result of improved power integrity and thermal design.
For projects requiring faster networking speeds, the Model B+ delivers dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless connectivity and gigabit ethernet over USB 2.0, which supports up to 300Mbps (three times the speed of previous boards). Bluetooth 4.2 and Bluetooth Low Energy support make it easier for tinkerers looking to create their own IoT hubs or interact with other devices in their smart home.
Lastly, the Model B+ comes complete with Power over Ethernet (PoE), which hasn’t officially been supported until now. Component manufacturers have created their own workarounds, but the Raspberry Pi Foundation will launch its own dedicated PoE HAT to make use of it in the near future.
As expected, the Model B+ fits the same dimensions as its predecessors, allowing hobbyists to utilise peripherals and cases that they already own. The price remains the same too, meaning it’ll cost $ 35/£30 at the usual suppliers.

SuperShe, a women-only international group headed by Kristina Roth, will soon open a headquarters and a space for their wellness retreats on a private island off the coast of Finland.
Starting in June, the 8.4 acre island will be able to house 10 guests, hand-picked by Roth. The four cabins on the island come equipped with spa amenities and Finnish saunas, according to SuperShe. During a stay at SuperShe island, groups will focus on fitness and nutrition.
“The SuperShe network as well as the island experience are slanted toward women who are interested in wellness, mindfulness, health, fitness, nature, beauty, relaxation, and connecting with other women,” Roth told Business Insider.
Roth, who is the former CEO and founder of Matisia Consultants, decided to buy the land after attending retreats at the Ashram California, which focuses on the mind, body, and the spirit.
Roth noticed during those trips that the men were distracting. She told the New York Post: “When there was a cute guy, women would put on lipstick. The idea [at SuperShe island] is, hey, focus on yourself — don’t try to get your hormones up.”
Although membership fees have been waived this first year of SuperShe, staying at the new island will not be cheap. Cosmopolitan reports a stay starts at $ 3,500 a week.

]]>Since then Milkman has continued to study the ways people make decisions, and how those processes can be altered to promote equality. Her work has also prioritized exploring the kinds of biased decision-making that leads to the underrepresentation of people of color and women that plagues many professional fields.
I spoke to Milkman for The Atlantic’s series on mentorship, “On The Shoulders Of Giants,” about her research, and the counterintuitive ways that everyday networking can harm women and minorities. The interview that follows has been edited for length and clarity.
O’Donnell: What biases have you found to be most harmful to mentorship?
Milkman: Stereotyping, where we assume that people having certain characteristics—how they look, how they talk—allows you to make assumptions about their abilities, or their interests. Even if you have the best of intentions as a mentor, you may inadvertently use stereotypes to shape the kinds of advice and pointers that you offer to your mentees.
O’Donnell: Can you think of an example?
Milkman: For instance, if you have multiple mentees, and you think an opportunity might be beneficial for one of them, you should stop and say, “Hey, could this be beneficial for the others? Is there a reason I’m not thinking of them? Is there a true distinction in their interests or what would benefit them? Or could it possibly be stereotyping?”
O’Donnell: Your work on decision-making bias in mentorship has expanded on the concept of “micro-inequities.” What are those and what role do they play in people’s professional lives?
Milkman: Small things add up over the course of a career, including a lack of opportunity, or a lack of networking. In our work, we looked specifically at the encouragement that prospective doctoral students received from faculty when they approached them about their research and the possibility of working with them. If a professor’s decision to respond or not is based on any kind of stereotyping, we argue that this is exactly the type of small act that, when aggregated, can have a large impact on a person’s career. If every time you seek encouragement you face these inequalities—less encouragement, less responsiveness—it can add up to substantially fewer women and minorities in the pipeline.
O’Donnell: What is the most counterintuitive thing that behavioral economics has to say about how bias can impact people’s careers over time?
Milkman: In the context of networking, which is very relevant to mentoring, we are likely to try and help people in our social networks by making connections for them. I might say, “Oh, you’re interested in journalism—I was just talking to a journalist that writes for The Atlantic.” We proactively or even just reactively offer helpful connections, guidance, and opportunities for people in our social networks, because that’s part of being a good person, frankly.
The thing is, every time we offer help to one person, that’s actually harming all the people who aren’t receiving help. If one person gets a leg up, that’s a leg down for whomever else is competing for those opportunities.
O’Donnell: And what does that mean for women and people of color?
Milkman: White men tend to have the best social networks and be the best connected—that is an empirical fact. What that means is that when we are all going around in our daily lives, trying to help the people we know, the act of helping those people disadvantages women and minorities—because at scale white men preferentially get those networking advantages. And so that’s another really pernicious bias that I think as a mentor we have to be very aware of: Who are we helping?
O’Donnell: I’m guessing that the takeaway from this research isn’t to stop helping people in your network. But what can be done to balance these issues?
Milkman: It’s a really terrific question and one I struggle with when I am teaching this in front of a whole classroom of students who ended up in my MBA classroom through their networks. A huge part of their lives is networking. They sort of gasp in awe that that could be somehow a bad thing. I think the most practical prescription is not to stop helping the people in your network and start being a jerk to everyone.
O’Donnell: So what is the most practical prescription?
Milkman: I think that the best advice is to realize that, by helping your network, you are hurting other groups. Rather than feeling like it’s crazy to acknowledge that two people with slightly different resumes might have had slightly different opportunities, maybe you need to recognize that even if their CVs look slightly different, maybe the person who had fewer opportunities is actually going to be a better candidate.
Whenever you do have someone in your network from a group that is underrepresented—a woman, a minority, a first-generation college student—we should be more aggressive about helping them. Recognize that it’s even more important to do things for them—maybe do three times as many things as you usually would for those individuals. I think that’s the best prescription.

Jennifer Fonstad, cofounder of Aspect Ventures and a seasoned venture capitalist, admits she’s more of an introvert than an extrovert. But when it comes to networking with Silicon Valley insiders, she’s a pro. Her advice: Don’t be afraid to ask.
Fonstad offered her advice at the Catalyst Conference in San Francisco this week in a fireside chat with Christina Passariello of the Wall Street Journal. The event was staged by Girls in Tech, a nonprofit group supporting women in tech. It has more than 60,000 members across 60 chapters.
Silicon Valley still has a problem with women. About 26 percent of professional computing positions in the U.S. workforce were held by women in 2016. About 5 percent of tech startups are owned by women, and 17 percent have a female founder. A survey found that 48 percent of women say that a lack of mentors is a barrier for them in the tech industry.
And networking is part of that problem, as the “good old boy network” is a self-perpetuating phenomenon. Fonstad noted that 130 men are promoted to management for every 100 women who are (according to a McKinsey report), and speculated that’s because the men networked better.
Fonstad worked in politics early in her career, and she said she often had to put on a brave face and introduce political candidates at networking events. That was a part of her job, and it forced her to be a better networker than she might have been otherwise. That role took the focus away from Fonstad herself and gave her a larger purpose that motivated her to network better.
Finding mentors is part of creating your own network. But mentoring is not a one-way street, Fonstad said. It works in both directions. When you seek out a network, you can look for people with common interests, but you don’t have to have a specific “ask” for people. The point is to create a network that stands on its own by forming it during a quiet time. Then, when it really matters, you can turn to your network when you really need some help, Fonstad said.
Getting structured help matters too. About 20 years ago, Fonstad was introduced to the venture community through the Kauffman fellowship, which matched her to the VC firm DFJ, which had quarterly events where she could network with peers and others in the industry.
Above: Jennifer Fonstad (left), cofounder of Aspect Ventures, and Christina Passariello of the Wall Street Journal.
“That created a network and peers in the industry for me, which many of my peers didn’t have,” Fonstad said.
She said you can be an effective networker by showing up. But you can become a “super networker” by becoming an organizer, whether it’s a group of lunches on a theme or a running group.
“Just being an organizer enables you to take it up a notch,” she said. “Then people think of you as someone to invite.”
Aspect Ventures invests in all types of startups, but Fonstad pointed out that 40 percent of the companies in her portfolio for her three-year-old firm have female founders, 2.5 times the industry average. (For the most part, Aspect Ventures focuses on series A rounds, usually after a startup has already raised a seed round.)
“We are not trying to be anything more than a new emerging venture firm; we believe that driving diversity in our portfolio leads to better decision-making and better outcomes,” she said. “We think the best way to drive change in our industry is having better returns than the average firm and showing diversity drives better outcomes.”
Aspect Ventures sets up networking events that create connections between portfolio companies, and that helps them get a leg up. Her company also tries to invest alongside other venture companies, and that openness helps expand its network and reach.
Asked what she was most proud of, Fonstad said, “My children.” From a work perspective, she said she was most proud of being a founder, as she co-created her company with Theresia Gouw.
Fonstad recommends a new book, Option B, by Sheryl Sandberg, the president of Facebook, who recently lost her husband. The book advises you to focus on small victories that you have every day in order to keep moving forward.

With Destiny 2 moving the franchise to the PC for the first time, a lot of players were hoping Activision would use dedicated servers to ensure stability and reliability. The company mentioned last week that those hopes for a dedicated server wouldn’t be fulfilled, but Destiny 2 Engineering Lead Mat Segur says the game’s hybrid server model is a bit more complex than that announcements suggests.
Unlike the original Destiny, where matches were hosted on one player’s console, “every activity in Destiny 2 is hosted by one of our servers,” Segur said in a Bungie blog post yesterday. “That means you will never again suffer a host migration during your Raid attempt or Trials match.”
But those servers won’t handle all the data for every player in the game. While “the server is authoritative over how the game progresses… each player is authoritative over their own movement and abilities,” Segur continued. “This allows us to give players the feeling of immediacy in all their moving and shooting—no matter where they live and no matter whom they choose to play with.”

America’s business leaders are rethinking how they network.
Gone are the days when execs both young and more veteran had the time to spend hours at a boozy lunch or on the golf course. Taking its place are a whole new set of networking activities — think “sweatworking” on a run or at a SoulCycle class, or going on a cultural retreat with business associates.
Leading the charge is a new generation of business leaders who value efficiency and multi-tasking more than ever before. Rather than devote a large chunk of time to a formal activity they wouldn’t necessarily enjoy otherwise, many execs are seeing the value in combining their hobbies with their business.
“I have found one of the most interesting ones has been music festivals. Several very compelling things have come out of Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, and Trans-Pecos for us over the past few years,” Amar Lalvani, CEO of hotel group Standard International, told Business Insider. “It’s a real opportunity where executives are way out of their element, let their hair down, and have the time and space to have unexpected conversations about shared interests that lead to ideas and initiatives.”
“[It’s] consistent with the almost total blending of work and play for most executives these days.”
For many of those execs, that means getting a workout in while they catch up with contacts. The trend of taking clients to SoulCycle has been well-documented, but execs at the fitness studio say they see “sweatworking” becoming even more popular.
“At first it was mostly people in media and finance, but now it’s lots of industries,” Gabby Cohen, SoulCycle’s VP of brand strategy, told Business Insider. “We’re all time-trapped, but it’s important to stay connected to other people. Having the chance to connect with people in a positive, healthy way for a short period of time makes SoulCycle an appealing option for this.”
During SXSW, Foursquare partnered with Cyc Fitness to host a spinning-while-networking event at different sites around Austin.
“Our attendance was really high,” Justin Breton, Foursquare’s head of marketing partnerships, said. “People felt that they did something different from the usual drinking and eating events at SXSW.”

In general, the idea of interrupting a day’s work flow to entertain a client over lunch is becoming less popular.
“Running a startup, I rarely have time for a full sit-down lunch meeting in order to network and continue building our business,” Adrian Aoun, CEO and founder of the AI-focused healthcare startup Forward, told Business Insider. “Many times I resort to eating a quick lunch at my desk, but as the founder of a startup that’s health-focused, I know all too well how detrimental being sedentary all day can be. For this reason, I make almost all my meetings walking meetings.
“I even ask my office manager not to schedule a conference room so it forces good behavior. I find walking meetings to be much more productive because you have to focus and can’t be distracted by your phone or laptop.”
The trend of “sweatworking” is certainly more common among tech or media companies, where employees tend to be more willing to stray from tradition. But even on Wall Street, today’s business lunches pale in extravagance compared to the meetings bankers held prior to the recession. Many businesses are becoming more image-conscious and, along with that, more cautious about appearing wasteful.
Meanwhile, several of the restaurants that have famously been havens for extravagant lunches have struggled in recent years. Last July, New York’s iconic Four Seasons restaurant closed following rent hikes and conflicts with Aby Rosen, the restaurant’s landlord at the Seagram Building.
Le Cirque, another storied Manhattan power-lunching spot, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with its sister restaurant Circo in March. “We had a short-term cash-flow issue so we filed for Chapter 11 to ensure we would not lose the leases on the two restaurants,” Mauro Maccioni, son of founder Sirio, told Page Six in the wake of the filing. “Both restaurants continue to operate as usual and fully staffed. We are in the process of restructuring ourselves and securing some additional outside funding.”
Still, some say that for a certain set of veteran decision-makers, the draw of a power lunch is still very strong. And while attitudes around the tradition have shifted, high rents and other shifts in the New York real estate market are also big factors in a restaurant’s success.
“There’s still something appealing about the energy and seeing all of those people. Face-to-face time spent with a client is really a good thing to do. It’s a well-worn tradition,” PR pro Leslie Stevens said to Business Insider. “But the two-hour thing — forget it. It’s an hour. We’re definitely into speed lunch now.”
While the team behind the Four Seasons is working on opening at a new location in Manhattan, Major Food Group — of Carbone, Parm, Santina, and Sadelle’s, among others — plan on opening a new complex of restaurants in the Four Seasons’ former home. The Grill, the first of three restaurants that are slotted for the space, will be opening soon.
“I think historically, as in places like the Four Seasons, ‘power’ was heavily defined by being seen and who you were seen with,” Christene Barberich, cofounder and global editor-in-chief of Refinery 29, said. “Today power comes, more likely, from flexibility, freedom, and efficiency … I don’t know many people who have the luxury to travel 45 minutes to sit and ‘lunch’ for 2 hours, and then spend $ 300 on top of that.”
Meanwhile, golf, the longtime sport of business executives across America, is losing steam with the average consumer. According to data from the National Golf Foundation, golf participation has fallen nationally by 20% since 2003. The data suggests that while the core group of golfers continues to enjoy the sport, casual participation has fallen in recent years.
Data from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association has shown that millennials between the ages of 18 to 30 have a lack of interest in playing the game, and more than 800 golf courses have shuttered across the US in the past decade. From Las Vegas to New Jersey, many courses are being replaced with housing developments.
Sarah Jacobs
As NPD Group analyst Matt Powell observed in a Forbes blog post in 2014, the golf industry has had a hard time appealing to a younger generation of millennials who have a completely different set of values. Golf is expensive, time-consuming, and exclusive, which doesn’t exactly jive with a generation who takes pride in “the hustle” and values experiences over luxury goods.
“Millennials were hit hard by the recession. This caused them to seek value in every purchase,” Powell wrote. “Millennials are willing to spend on things they think are important but always look at purchases with a value lens. Spending big money on rounds and equipment apparently does not connote value to millennials.”
But getting some exercise, even if it’s just for a walk, does.
