Netgear is taking Wi-Fi out of the house and into your backyard. The networking and switch maker is unveiling the weather-resistant Orbi Outdoor Satellite, a mesh-based device that extends your Wi-Fi network an additional 2,500 square feet.

The company made the announcement today ahead of CES 2018, the big tech trade show taking place in Las Vegas next week. The satellite connects to any Orbi Tri-Band Whole Home Wi-Fi system. Unlike other routers and extenders, the Orbi system uses dedicated bandwidth to deliver separate channels that can operate at high speeds.

The Orbi creates a dedicated 5-gigahertz, 1.7-gigabit per second channel between the base Orbi and the extended one so you can get full internet access for devices that connect to the satellite Orbi unit. And it delivers maximum internet speeds no matter how many devices are connected. That’s important, because the average broadband household has more than seven connected devices that can stream video, and emerging smart home devices are increasingly common, according to market researcher Parks Associates.

The Orbi System can cover about 3,500 square feet, and each satellite can add another 2,500 square feet. For your backyard, that could mean you can watch 4K HD videos on your mobile device or stream music to speakers in the backyard, guest house, or poolside.The outdoor Orbi satellite connects through walls to an indoor Orbi router, and you don’t have to haul additional ethernet cables to the yard. The speed you can get in the outdoor environment is about 10 megabits a second.

If you’re using the satellite at work, you can separate guests or employee traffic, and you can schedule ambient lighting for connected lights. The Orbi Outdoor Satellite is available now in the U.S. for $ 330. You can manage it with a mobile app, and it allows you to add Wi-Fi enabled Arlo security cameras to cover greater distances in large backyards.

“We built it to be weather resistant, for everywhere from Arizona to Minnesota,” said Amit Rele, product lead for Orbi at Netgear, in an interview with VentureBeat. “If you are streaming music by your pool or you’re grilling, you can get the access you need.”

If you bought one of Netgear’s Arlo outdoor cameras and then snapped up an extra power adapter just in case, you may want to sit up and take notice. Neetgear and the Consumer Product Safety Commission are recalling Arlo’s aftermarket power adapter after receiving seven reports of the cord overheating and melting, in one case leading to a fire. Only 7,700 affected adapters were sold in North America between June and October, but that still presents a sizeable risk.

This shouldn’t affect the adapter that came with your camera, so you can keep using it as long as you didn’t have to swap out the original. Still, this underscores the usefulness of having a backup for a security camera — you don’t have to leave your backyard unguarded, even if it’s just for a short while.

Netgear has dipped its toes into the retail market with the launch of a co-branded store with electronics retailer B8ta at a prime location at the Santana Row luxury outdoor mall in San Jose, California.

The new concept store opening today is the first in the networking company’s 20-year history, inspired in part by the stores of other product makers, such as Apple. The store is more like a showroom, which is the kind of experience-focused retail that B8ta is creating to add more excitement for shoppers, said Phillip Raub, cofounder and chief marketing officer at B8ta, in an interview with VentureBeat.

“This is the first time we partnered with a brand where they have a lot of co-branding in the store,” Raub said.

Netgear products take up about half the space in the store, which speaks to its transformation from a simple router and switch maker to the consumer tech product company it is today.

The store features Netgear’s Arlo Pro 2 wireless home security cameras, which are part of a family that has grabbed the No. 1 position in web-connected security cameras in the U.S. Netgear is also showing off its Orbi Wi-Fi extenders and its Nighthawk gaming routers, said Heidi Cormack, the company’s senior vice president of global marketing, in an interview.

Soon, Netgear will launch a smart outdoor security light, as well.

If there’s any place where this kind of gear will go over well, it’s in Silicon Valley.

Cormack said Netgear started looking at the concept a year ago, after it had success with other “store within a store” retail concepts.

“We thought, ‘Why not? It’s right in the heart of our home in Silicon Valley’,” Cormack said. “The idea is to showcase our products and the latest in technology for today’s connected home.”

Cormack said consumers can ask questions that help them move further along in the buying process.

“Getting hands-on with technology is more relevant than it ever has been,” she said.

The products are on display at the swanky outdoor mall, which also features an Amazon bookstore next door and a Tesla electric car showroom. Santana Row is as fancy as it gets in Silicon Valley, with 50 shops and 30 restaurants.

Raub said B8ta stores rotate products, bringing in perhaps 15 new items a month to supplement the consistent sellers. Some of the products are kind of experimental, like an internet-connected clothes iron and a gadget that shoots a ball in the air so your dog can fetch it. In fact, many of the products are focused on the internet of things (IoT), or making everyday objects smart and connected.

“Those kinds of products draw customers into the store,” Raub said.

The model is retail-as-a-service, where product makers can subscribe to a shelf space to show off their latest gear in a showroom experience. Even if the store doesn’t sell a ton of products, it could also let shoppers get a hands-on experience with something they will order online later. In that way, B8ta sees itself as the future of shopping.

“Even if a sale doesn’t come through B8ta, the brands may see a lift in the markets where we have a presence,” Raub said.

B8ta now has nine stores, all built in the last couple of years.

Circle with Disney’s advanced parental controls are helpful if you want to curb what your kids can do online and when, but it has normally required a separate device you plug in to your WiFi router. Why can’t it just be built into the router itself? It is now: Netgear has announced that its Nighthawk and Orbi routers now include Circle with Disney software. If you want to set a time limit on a given app or block racy material, you don’t need anything beyond the networking device you already own.

The feature is available now on “select” Nighthawk routers, and should reach Orbi through a firmware update in the near future. Just be aware that getting Circle’s full services will still carry a premium. You can filter access, block ads and pause internet access for free, but features like app-specific time limits, bedtimes and Alexa voice controls will cost you $ 5 per month. Circle clearly is hoping to make up for the lack of extra hardware by enticing you to pay recurring fees. It could be worthwhile, though — many routers only have limited parental controls at best, so this gives you an easy way to upgrade without having to buy a separate box.

Netgear is adding to its Arlo brand of security products with a new smart outdoor security light that can be triggered by motion.

Lights might not seem like a much of a high-tech product, but they’re part of a larger opportunity for Netgear. The company grew up making switches and routers, but it is broadening its reach to the Internet of Things, or making everyday products smart and connected. Patrick Lo, CEO of Netgear, and his executives talked about the opportunity as they made the lighting announcement at the company’s annual analyst meeting on Wednesday at Netgear’s headquarters in San Jose, California.

Certainly, some consumers may feel like they don’t need smart lights. But a quarter of Americans have home security devices now, and more want to install them. When you think about it, security cameras are more useful at night when the criminals are out and about. If you take videos with the motion-activated security camera at night, the video may not have sufficient quality to identify anyone.

With the Arlo Smart Security Light, the lights will activate as soon as the motion is detected, and the smart camera can start recording the event with better lighting. The lights can be connected to the same smartphone app that sends you alerts when the cameras detect motion. You can set the alerts so that an alert is only sent if someone steps through a door of the house, or there is motion in a particular area in the large scene.

The battery-operated smart light products will debut early next year, possibly by March. The pricing hasn’t been set yet. Pat Collins, head of the Arlo products, said that the company considered putting the lights into the cameras, but customers wanted more flexibility in where to put the lights. On top of that, the battery life for the camera is impacted by the addition of the light, Lo said. This can be useful since a light might be activated before a camera is activated because it is in a different position from the camera.

The lights are weather resistant, are easily mounted, and have rechargeable batteries.

“It’s a natural transition for us and the wireless lights give customers a lot more flexibility in where to put their security lights,” Collins said.

The Arlo product line is an important one for Netgear, as it has allowed it to expand beyond its switching and routing products. Netgear has shipped more than 5 million of the cameras since 2014, and users are viewing more than 43 million video streams every day. The Orbi mesh Wi-Fi router extenders have also helped the company introduce a new premium brand for high-quality Wi-Fi, Lo said.

Arlo in particular can be extended to introduce more products that go beyond home security cameras and lighting, Lo said. Netgear has about 41 percent of the market in the U.S. for Internet-based security cameras, and it has built that position since entering the market in 2014. It did so by introducing wireless security cameras in 2016. That makes it a lot easier to install cameras outside of the home, Collins said.

“We are smaller and nimbler, but over the last 20 years we built a marquee brand in Netgear,” Lo said.

In October, Netgear introduced its latest Arlo Pro 2 cameras with 1080p video and the ability to limit alerts based on motion detected in certain zones. Collins said the company will extend that with new Arlo services in the spring. That will include cloud storage, instant camera live views, emergency call dialing, and person-detection notifications. Those services will be available for a premium fee.

Rivals in the camera business include Nest, Samsung, Night Owl, Ring, Lorex, Swann, Canary, and DPS.

“You can paint a zone to detect movement only when someone walks through a door,” Collins said, rather than detecting movement when a dog walks by the door. “We are excited about these new services.”

Christine Gorjan, chief financial officer, said that the IP camera market is growing faster than expected, and that the Arlo line will become a bigger part of growth and revenues over time. It will help the company meet its annual goal of 10 percent revenue growth per year.
