Hannah Gadsby just inked a massive deal with Netflix, the streaming service the Emmy award-winning “Nanette” and “Douglas” comic once referred to as an “amoral algorithm cult.” Gadsby, a queer comedian who famously identifies “as tired,” is returning to Netflix with a multiple-title deal including a third stand-up special and a multiple-comic special that will showcase gender-diverse comedians. The news comes roughly a year after Gadsby publicly called out Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos for defending Dave Chappelle’s ridiculously transphobic special, “The Closer,” and for weaponizing the accessibility of their specials on the platform as proof that the company wasn’t transphobic. Gadsby took to Instagram with a scathing critique, as Sarandos unintentionally directed a ton of bigoted transphobes to Gadsby’s social media with his words.
“Hey Ted Sarandos! Just a quick note to let you know that I would prefer if you didn’t drag my name into your mess. Now I have to deal with even more of the hate and anger that Dave Chappelle’s fans like to unleash on me every time Dave gets 20 million dollars to process his emotionally stunted partial worldview. You didn’t pay me nearly enough to deal with the real-world consequences of the hate speech dog whistling you refuse to acknowledge, Ted. F*** you and your amoral algorithm cult.”
Gadsby’s newest stand-up set, “Body of Work” has been making the rounds this year while they’ve been on tour, with the Netflix special recording taking place at the Sydney Opera House. The set has been described as “deeply personal,” which is saying something considering how vulnerable Gadsby presented themselves in their previous two specials.

“In an effort to further open a door that I had to fight to get through myself, I will curate and host a line-up show on Netflix featuring six new, gender-diverse comedians,” said Gadsby In the official Netflix announcement for the deal. “In a notoriously transphobic industry, I am looking to broaden the scope of opportunities for genderqueer performers from around the globe, as well as expand the diversity of offerings to audiences on one of comedy’s biggest platforms.” The special is paired with a mentorship initiative to help boost the skills and visibility of comedians from marginalized gender identities, with the sets due to be recorded sometime in 2023. “This will be a chance for the world to hear these voices for the first, but definitely not the last, time,” they said.
Netflix is, regardless of its questionable ethics, still the biggest streaming platform in existence. Gadsby was right to call out the corporation for their excusal of Chappelle’s blatant transphobia and was doubly right when noting the company does not pay them enough to deal with the fallout of those actions. There are definitely those that see returning to the streamer as hypocritical, but it’s clear this is Gadsby’s way of making the company pay for putting them in such an unfair position in 2020.
Quite honestly? GOOD FOR THEM. Insult the company to their face, take home a fat check, amplify yourself, and get the chance to amplify even more marginalized comedians? That’s not hypocrisy, that’s breaking the game from the inside out.

Despite what seems like little interest from subscribers, Netflix is moving forward with its gaming ambitions. The company will release Desta: The Memories Between, the latest project from Monument Valley developer Ustwo, on September 27th. It also teased that the critically acclaimed Kentucky Route Zero would "soon" be available for free as well.

Former President Barack Obama won the "Outstanding Narrator" Emmy on Saturday for his narration on the Netflix documentary series "Our Great National Parks."
The award makes Obama the second US president in history to win an Emmy, and the first to win in a competitive category. (Former President Dwight Eisenhower was awarded the honorary "Governors Award" in 1956.)
It also inches Obama closer to prestigious EGOT status — an acronym used to describe the achievement of having won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. To date, only 17 people have achieved this.
Obama has previously won two Grammy Awards in the "Best Spoken Word Album" category for the audiobook readings of his memoirs, "The Audacity of Hope" and "A Promised Land."
He would still need to win an Oscar and a Tony to achieve EGOT status.
The former president beat out David Attenborough, Lupita Nyong'o, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and W. Kamau Bell to win the Emmy for "Our Great National Parks."
The series was produced by Higher Ground, the production company founded by Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama. It "shines the spotlight on some of the planet's most spectacular national parks," per Netflix's description of the series.
Obama was not in attendance to accept the award. Presenter RuPaul Charles accepted it on his behalf, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The series is also nominated for an Emmy in the "Outstanding Cinematography For A Nonfiction Program" category..

(Welcome to …And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)
Hot off his rather surprising appearance as the main villain Gorr the God Butcher in “Thor: Love and Thunder” (making him the latest actor to have dipped his toes into both ends of the DC and Marvel swimming pool), Christian Bale is about to venture back into much more familiar territory. Bale has collaborated with director Scott Cooper on a few occasions in the past, stretching back to 2013’s “Out of the Furnace” and the 2017 Western “Hostiles.” The third time should be the charm for both artists, as they’re once again reuniting for the upcoming “The Pale Blue Eye.” Official information about this project has remained scarce up until recently, as Netflix begins to ramp up marketing for the film that’s set to arrive roughly towards the end of this year and the beginning of the next.
Long a passion project for Cooper, “The Pale Blue Eye” now has a first look image and a release date to look forward to, along with various other notes and tidbits about what the film is about, who’s involved, and everything else you need to know.

Christian Bale has seen one other film of his end up going straight to Netflix, although that wasn’t quite the intention from the beginning. Director Andy Serkis’ “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle” was originally meant to debut theatrically via Warner Bros., but Netflix ended up swooping in and taking that picture off the studio’s hands. This time around, however, “The Pale Blue Sky” will undergo a limited theatrical release before premiering on Netflix. Mark it down on your calendars to look for theatrical showtimes near you on December 23, 2022. After that brief run, the movie will be made available on streaming January 6, 2023.

Upon the production’s initial announcement, director Scott Cooper stated that, “This is my attempt at a large-canvas whodunit, with a serial killer at its center. I want to make films that push me into a different, maybe uncomfortable space, but I am glad to have Christian go there with me. I’ve wanted to make this for over a decade and fortunately for me, Christian has perfectly aged into the lead character.” Cooper’s film is an adaptation, based on the 2006 novel of the same title by author Louis Bayard. The plot has been described as a “Gothic thriller that revolves around a series of fictional murders that took place in 1830 at the United States Military.” The longer synopsis of the novel is as follows:
At West Point Academy in 1830, the calm of an October evening is shattered by the discovery of a young cadet’s body swinging from a rope. The next morning, an even greater horror comes to light. Someone has removed the dead man’s heart. Augustus Landor—who acquired some renown in his years as a New York City police detective—is called in to discreetly investigate. It’s a baffling case Landor must pursue in secret, for the scandal could do irreparable damage to the fledgling institution. But he finds help from an unexpected ally—a moody, young cadet with a penchant for drink, two volumes of poetry to his name, and a murky past that changes from telling to telling. The strange and haunted Southern poet for whom Landor develops a fatherly affection, is named Edgar Allan Poe.

Given the lead actor involved and the well-known figure featured in the story, casting will prove to be even more important than usual with “The Pale Blue Eye.” Christian Bale is attached as lead protagonist Augustus Landor, the detective in charge of unraveling this disturbing murder mystery. The aforementioned “young cadet” who’s none other than Edgar Allan Poe himself will be portrayed by distinctive character actor Harry Melling, a veteran of the “Harry Potter” franchise, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” and the popular Netflix series “The Queen’s Gambit.” We previously reported that a bevy of other actors had also joined the cast. These names include Gillian Anderson, Robert Duvall, Timothy Spall, Lucy Boynton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Toby Jones, and Harry Lawtey.
As mentioned, the film will be written and directed by Scott Cooper. The esteemed Howard Shore is reportedly on board to compose the score, with cinematography duties falling to Masanobu Takayanagi, who’s known for his work on “Warrior,” “The Grey,” “Spotlight,” and Cooper’s previous film, “Hostiles.” Stay tuned for more details as they come in.

Elite is going back to school this summer: Netflix’s Spanish-language teen drama will return with Season 4 on Friday, June 18. The streamer announced the date on Twitter Monday, along with eight new photos from the upcoming episodes.
The fresh installments will welcome several new cast members to the upper-class secondary school Las Encinas: Andrés Velencoso, Manu Rios, Carla Díaz, Martina Cariddi, Pol Granch and Diego Martín have joined the ensemble. Their characters will cross paths with Guzmán, Samuel, Ander, Omar, Rebeca and Cayetana.
The show’s Season 3 finale concluded with the exits of four fan-favorites: Lu (played by Danna Paola) and Nadia (Mina El Hammani) moved to New York to continue their educations; Carla (Ester Expósito) inherited her family’s wine business; and Valerio (Jorge López) took the reigns of Carla’s new venture. (Polo, of course, wasn’t so lucky and was accidentally killed by Lu.) As for the characters sticking around for Season 4, Omar joined his boyfriend Ander (plus Samuel, Guzmán and Rebeca) as a student at Las Encinas, while Cayetana became the school’s new janitor.
As previously reported, the series has already been picked up for a fifth season by Netflix, with Argentinian actress Valentina Zenere (Cable Girls) and Brazilian actor André Lamoglia (Juacas) boarding the ensemble.

Stranger Things masterminds the Duffer Brothers are keeping the creepy vibe going at Netflix: The pair are turning the Stephen King novel The Talisman into a series for the streamer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Co-written by King and Peter Straub and first published in 1984, The Talisman centers on a 12-year-old boy named Jack Sawyer, who embarks on a road trip to find a special crystal in a bid to save his dying mother’s life. Steven Spielberg bought the film rights before it was even published, but never managed to bring the story to the big screen; now he’ll executive-produce the Netflix series, along with the Duffer Brothers, aka Matt and Ross Duffer.
Curtis Gwinn, who has worked as a writer and producer on Stranger Things along with The Walking Dead and The Leftovers, will write Netflix’s The Talisman and serve as showrunner.
This is just the latest Stephen King adaptation to hit TV screens, of course: Paramount+ (formerly known as CBS All Access) recently unveiled a limited series version of The Stand, starring James Marsden, Whoopi Goldberg and Alexander Skarsgård; Hulu produced two seasons of Castle Rock, an anthology that combined characters from across King’s oeuvre; and a new take on Carrie is in the works at FX.

Netflix will continue to roam the halls of Las Encinas for the foreseeable future. The streaming service has renewed Spanish-language drama Elite for a fifth season, ahead of its Season 4 premiere.
According to our sister site Deadline, the Season 5 cast will include a pair of newcomers: Argentinian actress Valentina Zenere (Cable Girls) and Brazilian actor André Lamoglia (Juacas). Character details were not provided.

As seen in the Season 3 finale, several students — Carla, Lu, Nadia and Valerio — have left Las Encinas behind and are embarking on a new life. (Polo, of course, wasn’t so lucky and was accidentally killed by Lu.)
Meanwhile, Omar joined his boyfriend Ander, plus Samuel, Guzman and Rebeca, as a student at Las Encinas, while Cayetana became the school’s new janitor.
Elite was previously renewed for a fourth season in May. In a tweet confirming the Season 5 renewal, Netflix made clear that there’s still no timetable for Season 4’s premiere.
As previously reported, Season 4 will welcome new cast members Andrés Velencoso, Manu Rios, Carla Díaz, Martina Cariddi, Pol Granch and Diego Martín, whose characters will cross paths with Guzmán, Samuel, Ander, Omar, Rebeca and Cayetana. (See the newest cast photo here.)

Lana Condor is extending her relationship with Netflix with the announcement of a new comedy series, Boo, Bitch, that she will star in and executive produce for the streamer.
The series, which has been given an eight-episode order, will follow a high school senior (Condor) who’s lived her life safely under the radar, and “seizes the opportunity to change her narrative and start living an epic life, only to find out the next morning that she’s a ghost,” our sister site Variety first reported.
Condor’s partnership with Netflix began with her breakout starring role in the streaming giant’s YA rom-com To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and its sequel, To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, which dropped last year. The third entry, To All the Boys: Always and Forever, Lara Jean, is slated to release Feb. 12.
In addition to the above franchise, Condor’s recent credits include her role as Saya Kuroki in the Syfy series Deadly Class and a voice-acting gig on the stop-motion animation series Rilakkuma and Kaoru. On the film side of things, she held down roles in Alita: Battle Angel and X-Men: Apocalypse, and will also appear in the upcoming HBO Max film Moonshot.
Erin Ehrlich and Lauren Iungerich provided a fresh take on Boo, Bitch from an original script optioned by Tim Schauer and Kuba Soltysiak. All four are credited as co-creators, with Ehrlich and Iungerich serving as executive producers and co-showrunners. Schauer and Soltysiak will be co-executive producers on the project.
