“I’ll take all the heat you want. But you are not that far away from a comprehensive immigration reform,” Trump said during a televised meeting with lawmakers of both parties on Tuesday.

Trump met with a group of 20 members of Congress seeking a solution to avoid a government shutdown by passing the next spending bill by January 19. Ditching the shutdown is essential for Republicans to show their strength, while Democrats come under pressure from their base to pass a legislative fix to the impending end of the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

Last year, Trump ended the DACA program, which shielded more than 700,000 illegal immigrants who arrived as children from deportation and gave them the right to work legally. Trump has given Congress until March to codify a permanent protection status.

Apart from DACA, lawmakers are also being asked to increase border security, address family-based “chain migration” and determine the future of the visa lottery program.

“You folks are going to have to come up with a solution, and if you do, I‘m going to sign that solution,” Trump told lawmakers.

Yet, Trump has insisted on building a border security wall, as promised during his election, campaign.

“If you don’t have the wall, you don’t have security,” he said.

Lawmakers from both parties are divided over the demand for a border wall on the southern US border. Democratic House Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland said his party was opposed to Republican calls for $ 18 billion in funding to build the barrier.  

“It was clear in the meeting that wall did mean some structure,” Hoyer told reporters, adding that Trump’s remarks also mentioned fencing, cameras and other security measures for the border.

Republicans  were adamant that Trump’s call “means the wall,” but Trump acknowledges it does not need to cover the entire length of the border because of geographic boundaries.

Prior to the meeting, a leaked memo from the left-wing Center for American Progress called Dreamers “a critical component of the Democratic Party’s future electoral success.”

The memo, co-authored by former Clinton communications director Jennifer Palmieri, instructed Democrats to “refuse to offer any votes for Republican spending bills that do not offer a fix for Dreamers and instead appropriate funds to deport them.”

The memo said protecting DACA is not only a “moral imperative” for Democrats, it is also key to getting votes.

“If Democrats don’t try to do everything in their power to defend Dreams, that will jeopardize Democrats’ electoral changes in 2018 and beyond,” stated the memo. “In short the next few weeks will tell us a lot about the Democratic party and its long-term electoral prospects.”

Democrats and Republicans are to resume negotiations on Wednesday, and will continue to meet over the next several weeks to avoid a government shutdown.

WASHINGTON — House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said some of the protesters who disrupted her town hall in San Francisco earlier this week helped plan it and suggested that their demands are not feasible in the current Congress.

On Monday, protesters went after Pelosi for working across the aisle with President Donald Trump to reach an understanding on the future of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which benefits undocumented immigrant children born outside the US who are currently living in the country illegally.

“We need to have a conversation, but that was completely one-sided,” Pelosi told reporters at the time. “They don’t want any answers.”

But in her weekly press conference on Wednesday, Pelosi said that despite the constant coordination between the various caucuses on Capitol Hill with immigration advocacy groups, the path forward will be with the bipartisan legislation called the DREAM Act.

“Some people are saying, “Well if you pass that, then what about other undocumenteds?’ Well comprehensive immigration reform is our goal, we think this is a good first step and we do want to protect the families,” she said. 

Pelosi added that some of the protesters at her meeting were the same people who helped plan the event on her behalf.

“And one of the purposes of the meeting — in fact some of the people who were protesting had been part of the planning of the meeting for this meeting — was to say to dreamers, ‘Sign up. You have until October fifth to sign up. Sign up even sooner than that,'” she said.

The longtime California Democrat also noted that the protesters were concerned about other types of undocumented immigrants, which would require much more sweeping legislation that the Republican leaders in Congress would be highly unlikely to support or even consider.

“There are some who showed up in San Francisco who said, ‘All or none. We’re not gonna do the dreamers unless we do comprehensive immigration reform,'” Pelosi said. “Well we don’t have that opportunity now.”

Last month, the countries put out a 13-point list of demands for Doha, insisting that, among other things, their Persian Gulf neighbor shutter the Al Jazeera news channel, cut back diplomatic ties with Iran and close down a Turkish military base in Qatar. They also demanded that Qatar sever its alleged ties with the Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbollah, Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group (IS, formerly known as ISIL/ISIS).

Qatar has denied funding terrorists, but has rejected the demands, calling them an “unprovoked attack on Qatar’s sovereignty.”

“Reading between the lines, the blockading countries [are] demanding that we have to surrender our sovereignty to end the siege, something which… Qatar will never do,” Qatari Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said.

Doha’s refusal to accept their demands proves it has links to terrorist groups, the four Arab countries leading the boycott against Qatar claimed in a joint statement last week. 

The international community is losing patience with the Gulf’s funding of extremist groups, said Tillerson’s communications adviser, RC Hammond, adding that all countries in the region needed to act against terror funding.

Washington has been sending mixed messages on the subject since the beginning of the crisis earlier in June. While President Donald Trump supported the Saudi-led blockade of Qatar, Tillerson called for an easing of the ban. And adding further confusion, days after Trump blasted Qatar for “funding terrorism,” his administration authorized the sale of over $ 21 billion of US weapons to the emirate.

There are more than 10,000 American service members at the US Central Command base in Qatar.

The Gulf countries have also accused Doha of not complying with previously struck agreements.

On Monday, CNN published the purported agreements signed in 2013 and 2014, the authenticity of which Qatar appeared to have confirmed by telling the outlet that it was Saudi Arabia and the UAE who “have broken the spirit of the agreement.”

“A full reading of that text will show that the intent of the 2013/14 agreements was to ensure that sovereign GCC nations be able cooperate within a clear framework,” the director of Qatar’s government communication office, Sheikh Saif Bin Ahmed Al-Thani, told CNN.

“Their demands ‒ that Qatar close down Al Jazeera, force the breakup of families, and pay ‘compensation’ ‒ are demands that bear no relation to the Riyadh agreements,” he added.

The published documents show that Gulf states, including Qatar, struck a series of agreements in 2013 and 2014, vowing not to support opposition forces on each other’s territory, as well as not to support “antagonistic media” that would trumpet opposition groups in the region, including Egypt and Bahrain.

One of the agreements specifically mentioned preventing Qatar-funded Al Jazeera from being used as a platform for groups or figures challenging the Egyptian government.

After the agreement was signed, Al Jazeera shut down a channel dedicated to Egypt coverage: Al Jazeera Mubashir Misr, CNN reported.

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration has notified Congress that Iran is complying with the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated by former President Barack Obama, and says the US has extended the sanctions relief given to the Islamic republic in exchange for curbs on its atomic program.

However, in a letter sent late Tuesday to House Speaker Paul Ryan, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the administration has undertaken a full review of the agreement, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

“Iran remains a leading state sponsor of terror, through many platforms and methods,” Tillerson wrote. He said the National Security Council-led interagency review of the agreement will evaluate whether it “is vital to the national security interests of the United States.”

The certification of Iran’s compliance, which must be sent to Congress every 90 days, is the first issued by the Trump administration. The deadline for this certification was midnight.

As a candidate in the 2016 presidential election, Trump was an outspoken critic of the deal but had offered conflicting opinions on whether he would try to scrap it, modify it or keep it in place with more strenuous enforcement. Tuesday’s determination suggested that while Trump agreed with findings by the UN’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, that Iran is keeping to its end of the bargain, he is looking for another way to ratchet up pressure on Tehran.

Despite the sanctions relief, Iran remains on the State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism for its support of anti-Israel groups and is still subject to non-nuclear sanctions, including for human rights abuses and for its backing of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government.

The nuclear deal was sealed in Vienna in July 2015 after 18 months of negotiations led by former Secretary of State John Kerry and diplomats from the other four permanent members of the UN Security Council — Britain, China, France and Russia — and Germany. Under its terms, Iran agreed to curb its nuclear program, long suspected of being aimed at developing atomic weapons, in return for billions of dollars in sanctions relief.

Opponents of the deal, including Israel, objected, saying it only delayed Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons and did not allow for the kind of inspections of its atomic sites that would guarantee it was not cheating. Obama, Kerry and others who negotiated the deal strenuously defended its terms and said the agreement made Israel, the Middle East and the world a safer place.
