  • The Federal Reserve should consider a 150-basis-point rate hike, a Wells Fargo strategist said.
  • "Why not just rip off the Band-Aid — let's get there in one day," Michael Schumacher told CNBC.
  • Most economists expect the Fed to raise interest rates 75 basis points after the conclusion of its meeting Wednesday.

The Federal Reserve should hike interest rates by 150 basis points — even though that would likely spark "carnage" in stocks, a top Wells Fargo strategist has said.

Most economists expect the US central bank to announce another jumbo rate hike of 75 basis points at the conclusion of its two-day meeting later Wednesday.

But given the Fed likely wants to raise its base rate from 2.5% to 4%, it should consider getting there by making one even more supersized hike in its September policy decision, Michael Schumacher told CNBC on Tuesday. 

"The Fed knows what the destination is. It's got the funds rate now, the upper bound is 2.5%," the Wells Fargo Securities' head of macro strategy said on "Fast Money". 

"Very likely it gets to 4%-plus this year," he added

"Why not just rip off the Band-Aid — let's get there in one day."

The central bank has raised interest rates 75 basis points at its two previous consecutive meetings, in an effort to tame inflation running near 40-year highs. 

Schumacher acknowledged a 150 basis point hike is unlikely, because of the shock it would deliver to markets. Stocks have sagged, with the S&P 500 down 19.3% year-to-date, as investors assessed whether the Fed's aggressive tightening could tip the US into a recession.

"The big fear in the market would be, 'Oh my goodness, they've done a record-sized move — what's going to happen next month or the month after that?'" Schumacher said. 

"It would require incredibly good communication and confidence or the result: Carnage. And nobody wants that."

Market still face turbulence in coming months from the central bank's unwinding of the loose monetary policies in place since the 2008 financial crisis, according to Schumacher.

"When you consider the last 10-plus years, we've had incredibly easy monetary policy for most of that time," he said. "Super-stimulative fiscal policy in a lot of cases, especially the US." 

"So, doing a very quick U-turn — I suspect it's going to be very rocky," he added. "To think that it would somehow go smoothly from here is probably a big leap."

US stock futures pointed to a slight gain at the open Wednesday, ahead of the Fed's decision, after the major indexes closed about 1% lower Tuesday. S&P 500 futures were up 0.28%, Nasdaq futures rose 0.08%, and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures added 0.29%.

Russian President Vladimir Putin denied Russian responsibility for Europe's energy crisis and said the EU can simply turn on the new Nord Stream 2 pipeline if it wants more natural gas from his country.

"The bottom line is, if you have an urge, if it's so hard for you, just lift the sanctions on Nord Stream 2, which is 55 billion cubic metres of gas per year, just push the button and everything will get going," said Putin after the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Uzbekistan on Friday, per Reuters.

He also criticized the "green agenda" — the EU's renewable energy push — which he said started the energy crisis even before the war in Ukraine.

The Nord Stream 2 natural-gas pipeline runs in parallel to Nord Stream 1, a key pipeline that delivers fuel from Russia to Europe. The $ 11 billion Nord Stream 2 pipeline was completed in September, and stands to double Russia's gas flows to Europe. However, Nord Stream 2 has never been operational because Germany shelved the project in February, days before Russia invaded Ukraine. 

The EU is staring at an energy crisis this coming winter as Russia supplies about 40% of Europe's natural gas, most of which is transported via pipelines. In 2021, Russia exported about 155 billion cubic meters of the fuel to Europe — more than one-third of which came from the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, according to Reuters.

In early September, Russia state gas giant Gazprom completely turned off supply to Europe via Nord Stream 1. Gazprom and the Kremlin have consistently insisted that the slowing of gas flows was due to technical reasons.

Benchmark European natural-gas future have more than doubled from a year ago.

Arthur expressed sadness at the fact the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had decided to depart as senior members of the Royal Family.

When asked by Eamonn how he felt about the duo leaving, he told the host: “I can’t believe this has happened.”

He soon divulged further information about how the relationship with Harry had changed after Meghan came into the fold.

“For the first year I thought she was sensational,” Arthur said, but he soon explained how things had quickly gone downhill.

“I did lots of trips with her,” Arthur continued. “I went to Morrocoo and I went all around Britain (and) Ireland and she was great.”

However, he explained: “Four times, maybe three times, I asked the Palace if we as a media group could meet Meghan and it never happened.

“I think if she had met us things might have been different.

“She might have seen that we’re human and unfortunately she did get some bad press, and that was a mistake.”

“Harry’s badly needed here. I hope in March, he’s got until March to rethink it, he comes back,” he noted.

Elsewhere on This Morning today, Eamonn was forced to apologise to ITV viewers for a major geographical blunder.

He and Ruth were joined by paddleboarder Buster live from Weymouth after a clip of a local seal named Sammy had been joining in with the fun off the coast.

However, when introducing Buster, Eamonn told viewers they were about to be transported to Devon – not Dorset.

“Devon has another local celebrity, or shall I say seal-ebrity,” Eamonn told viewers.

Ruth added: “Sammy has popped up in various locations along the coast over the past month and he has even started jumping on paddle boards.”

The pair then said they were cutting to a beach in Devon, even though Weymouth is located in Dorset.

Pointing out the error, one fan tweeted: “#ThisMorning Geography lesson Weymouth is in Dorset not Devon!”

Former Bachelorette star Rachel Lindsay is making headlines for declaring she’ll quit the franchise if it doesn’t address its lack of diversity — and now she’s explaining her stance.

In a blog post on her personal website on Monday, Lindsay — who vied for Nick Viall’s heart on Season 21 of The Bachelor before becoming the first African American Bachelorette in franchise history — began by saying being on The Bachelor “was a fun and fulfilling experience” and that she agreed to be the Bachelorette because “I wanted to be a trailblazer in this franchise to diversify the lead role.” But nearly four years later, she says, “we still don’t have the diversity that this show needs, and that our audience deserves.” (TVLine has reached out to ABC for a response to Lindsay’s comments.)

She added that on The Bachelor, “people of color become placeholders as the token person of color to add some flavor” to their seasons, and she also took herself to task for not speaking up enough: “I have not been loud enough on the deep-rooted, 18-year systemic problems in this franchise… I have come to the conclusion that if changes are not made on the inside and outside of the franchise, I will dissociate myself from it.”

Lindsay calls on the franchise to “cast leads that are truly interested in dating outside of their race,” take action to rectify the lack of diversity, hire more diverse producers “to make your contestants of color feel more comfortable,” stop creating “problematic storylines” for people of color and make a statement acknowledging the franchise’s systemic racism. To back up that last charge, Lindsay cites a number of quotes from producers and executives, including Bachelor creator Mike Fleiss admitting that the lower ratings for Lindsay’s Bachelorette season “revealed something about our fans.”

After pointing out that if the NFL can apologize for past mistakes, “the Bachelor franchise can most certainly follow suit,” Lindsay concluded by saying the upcoming best-of series The Bachelor: The Greatest Seasons — Ever! “will weekly highlight the very thing that is wrong with this franchise.”

Lizzie McGuire‘s return to television will come by way of Hulu, at least if series creator Terri Minsky — who was fired as showrunner in January — gets her wish.

“I am so proud of the two episodes we did,” Minsky tells our sister publication Variety. ‘Hilary has a grasp of Lizzie McGuire at 30 that needs to be seen. It’s a wonderful thing to watch. I would love the show to exist, but ideally I would love it if it could be given that treatment of going to Hulu and doing the show that we were doing. That’s the part where I am completely in the dark. It’s important to me that this show was important to people. I felt like I wanted to do a show that was worthy of that kind of devotion.”

At the time of Minsky’s firing, Disney released a statement about Lizzie moving in a “different creative direction” and “putting a new lens on the show.” It’s now becoming clear that Minsky intended to tell a more adult story — one befitting a 30-year-old woman living in New York City — than Disney wanted for its kid-friendly streaming service.

This comes just one day after Duff suggested on Instagram that Love, Victor moving from Disney+ to Hulu due to its mature content “sounds familiar.”

The revival, which remains in development, “picks up as Lizzie McGuire is just about to turn 30. She seemingly has it all — her dream job as an assistant to a fancy New York City decorator, her dream guy and a picturesque Brooklyn apartment — but things aren’t always as they seem. With a little help from her friends, her loving family and her 13 year-old alter-ego in animated form, Lizzie navigates the ups and downs of adulthood.”

In addition to Duff returning in the title role, the revival also welcomes back Jake Thomas as Matt McGuire, Hallie Todd as Jo McGuire, Robert Carradine as Sam McGuire, and Adam Lamberg as David “Gordo” Gordon. The second episode of Arrow‘s farewell run left us with that question, as JJ aimed to “rip the heart out” of the Unification movement by targeting its members, William (Ben Lewis) included. TVLine spoke with Chicago Fire alum Charlie Barnett, who plays grown-up JJ, about what’s to come and the blood to be spilled.

TVLINE | So, JJ is stone-cold. 
He’s pretty hard, you know. He’s been through a lot.

TVLINE | Were you familiar with Arrow‘s Diggle and Lyla? And if so, were you surprised to that see JJ fell so far from noble tree?
You know, I went back and watched a lot [of previous seasons]… but … from knowing life, from knowing people, no, I’m not surprised. People who grew up in homes, they sometimes feel like they missed out on something or were given a disservice, so I’m not surprised to see him turn into a complicated or “villainous” person.

TVLINE | Connor explained to Mia that his parents had been focused on him, their adopted son, and so JJ lost out.
He definitely did. Connor was adopted and came from his own complicated situation, and that kind of weight — I’m adopted myself, so I know from experience — can be really difficult, and it manifests in very different ways for each person. As a child who maybe didn’t necessarily ask for another brother or a sister but received it and was happy to have it, to see then you kind of get “forgotten” within the fold, because of the actions of this new family member…? A twisted result can come from it.

Really, we have to remember that JJ is at this point just trying to show them that there is another side to this story, as much as people are labeling him a “villain.” As Charlie the actor playing the part, I don’t see him as a villain; I see him as being given the short end of the stick. Look at Green Arrow, who is such an interesting character because he’s not a perfect hero. He’s not Superman.

JJ at his core is trying to make a voice for the people who have been dealt a sh–ty hand or had a sh–ty situation — maybe they lost someone, due to these people. He’s just trying to make that voice heard. Now, maybe he’s doing it in a bad way…. [Laughs]

TVLINE | Speaking of that, when he threatens to have William killed, on a scale of 1 to 10, how much did he mean that?
Oh, whole-heartedly 10. He’s willing to do whatever he needs. He has been pushed and he’s been pulled for many, many years in his life. In the backstory I have in my mind, he and Connor were friends, they were brothers, and they were tight. And at some point in their adulthood, JJ started to see what he had lost out on and what Connor had gained in retrospect. Look at the fact that Connor is working with his dad so closely, and JJ was never given that opportunity. It makes his blood boil just thinking about it.

Look, I’ve known Monica since I was 13, 12 years old, strangely enough, so she’s more like a sister to me, even though we had to make out on TV. [Laughs] I love her to death and we have joked about building our own little Chicago spinoff, where Dawson and Mills find their way to Puerto Rico and start their own firehouse down there.
