Following President Donald Trump’s speech outlining his plan to increase the US military’s presence in Afghanistan, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina praised Trump’s blueprint on hopefully ending America’s longest war on Monday.

“I will fight … tooth and nail to make sure that we do not lose in Afghanistan like we did in Iraq,” Graham said on Fox News. “It’s just exactly what President Obama did in Iraq, was to leave against sound military advice.”

“President Trump has the smarts and the moral courage to listen to his generals and take their advice rather than going the political way,” Graham continued. “And I’m so proud he did because unlike Obama, President Trump is listening to his generals.”

But Graham’s comments took a more harrowing tone when he warned colleagues who may criticize Trump’s plan.

“And to my colleagues in Congress, you will own a “no” vote,” Graham said. “The next 9/11 will be your fault, not President Trump’s fault, if you shoot down this plan because this is a solid plan.

Although Trump did not mention exact numbers for his troop increase proposal, multiple reports say he plans on sending 4,000 troops, in addition to the 8,400 that are already deployed to Afghanistan. During his speech, Trump also stressed that the US would not be “nation-building again,” but instead, would be “killing terrorists.”

“This will turn things around in Afghanistan — it’s putting Pakistan on notice,” Graham continued. “I have a lot of confidence this will work, but it won’t be easy. They will try to break our will.”

“And to President Trump, you’ve shown the will to stand up to radical Islam, But my friend, they’re gonna come after us, they’re gonna try to break your will. Don’t let them. Stick with it.”

The Land Registry House Price Index for June 2017, the anniversary of the referendum, have been released.

And they show not only a five per cent annual increase in house prices but also a monthly decline in the reversal of growth.

Speaking about the latest figures, Russell Quirk, Founder and CEO of eMoov.co.uk said: “It may seem a long time ago now, but many believe the market is still shaking off a degree of Brexit uncertainty, a stance that has been bolstered by the less than convincing political landscape that followed.

“Ironically it has been those that prophesied the rapture of the UK market that have actually been the most detrimental to it.

“Those closest to the action such as George Osborne and his outlandish claims of an inevitable 18 per cent crash in house prices have seen an air of uncertainty slow the market, albeit a tiny blip on an otherwise impeccable current medical record for UK property.”

Discussing the impact of Brexit one year on from the vote, Russell said: “A year on and in contrast to gloomy predictions, an anticipative Schadenfreude even, we see that, in fact, house prices are nearly five per cent higher annually, with the monthly decline in growth reversing and the market remaining one of the most robust in the world.

“The attempt by Osborne, Hammond and many others to talk the puff out of the UK economy and its related housing market, were grossly exaggerated and in fact completely wrong.”

The Land Registry House Price Index has revealed the average house price in the UK is £223,257.

Month on month, property prices have risen by 0.8 per cent compared to May, and 4.9 per cent compared to last year.

The data is compiled using residential housing transactions, whether for cash or with a mortgage.

The Post Office reacted to the figures and said they show first-time buyers are getting savvy about what and where they purchase property.

Owen Woodley, Managing Director, Post Office Money said: “A slower rate of house price growth will no doubt be welcomed by first-time buyers, many of whom are getting stuck saving for a deposit which is always out of reach.

“House prices remain high and Post Office Money research shows that first-time buyers are taking a flexible approach, widening their net and willing to travel to more affordable hotspots, to make their housing aspirations a reality.

“Solving the UK’s housing crisis will also require the industry to take a leaf out of a first-time buyer’s book, taking a more flexible and innovative approach in the services and products we provide to first-time buyers and home movers.”

The good news continues on from positive figures last month which showed the average price of a property in the UK was £220,713 in May 2017 – an annual price change of 4.7 per cent.

While the annual growth rate has slowed since mid-2016 it has remained broadly around 5 per cent during 2017.

TEAM Sky boss David Brailsford has mocked critics of the team after the British squad grabbed the Tour de France by the throat.

Geraint Thomas seized his first yellow jersey with a fearless time trial in wet and slippery conditions that petrified his rivals and hurt others, while Sky had four riders in the top eight on the opening day.

The emphatic showing came after some rivals had declared Sky a fading force, while off the road the team remains the subject of a UK Anti-Doping inquiry.

But Brailsford, who exchanged hugs with jubilant staff after the stage one triumph, hit back.

“We look vulnerable don’t you think? That’s what everybody’s been saying,” Brailsford said.

“We’re on it, despite what everybody else says. We’re here to race now.”

Thomas’ success was a change in fortune for the Welsh rider after his Giro d’Italia was ruined when he was involved in the highly-publicised motorbike crash.

“At the end of the day we’re involved in a sport with wheels and the thing about a wheel is it always turns,” Brailsford said.

“One minute you’re in the depth of despair and before you know it it’s turned around and here we are on cloud nine again. That’s part of our sport.

“It’s nice to get a steady start. It was nervous and it was a bit edgy watching the lads in the wet.

“It was a real shame to see (Alejandro) Valverde go down. That’s quite sad for him so I hope he’s all right.”

Thomas said he “hadn’t even thought” about claiming the yellow jersey.

“It’s unreal. The start of my eighth Tour, my 12th Grand Tour and my first stage win. It’s been a long time coming and it’s just an amazing feeling,” Thomas said.

“It’s been a rough time on the bike this year. It certainly makes up for most of the Giro, and back home as well. With my mum and my wife I’ve had a bit of a rough time recently so it’s nice to get this win. It’s unbelievable. I’m lost for words.

“It’s amazing to get this win and thanks to everyone who has supported me. It’s a great day.”

Brailsford said the team had considered not chasing yellow given the demands of defending it so early in the race, but said the decision had been made to seize the initiative.

“You’ve got to take these opportunities in life when they come along,” he said.

“You can’t not be happy for Geraint, he deserves this so much. It’s a dream come true for him and us.”
