The following post contains spoilers for The Blacklist‘s Season 8 premiere.

That faint scent of smoke you’re smelling after watching The Blacklist‘s return? It’s all those bridges Liz Keen burned in the very first Season 8 episode.

After an abbreviated seventh season, half-animated finale and extra-long hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Blacklist returned to NBC on Friday, bringing with it Liz’s renewed determination to get real answers from Reddington. In the process, Liz not only doubled down on the new alliance with her mother, Katarina Rostova, but she betrayed both Red and the FBI task force, perhaps worse than she has in the past.

Early on in Friday’s premiere, Katarina informed Liz that she’s seeking answers about the Sikorsky Archive and a KGB mole under the alias N13; Katarina was previously (and wrongly) accused of being N13, but she suspects it could be Dom, Red or even both of them, somehow. But in order to get the answers she wants, Katarina needed to get Dom alone, and she concocted a plan to abduct Dom — now awake from his coma — while he was being relocated to a new facility. (Dom, previously played by the late Brian Dennehy, has been recast with Guiding Light alum Ron Raines.)

Despite some initial hesitation, Liz ultimately helped facilitate Dom’s abduction, completely blindsiding both Red and the task force as she did so. Dembe reminded a forlorn Red that Liz’s betrayal has always been a possibility — “Yeah, I know,” Red replied. “And I let it happen anyway.” — while the task force was obligated to launch a manhunt for Liz, who’s now on the run. She did, however, have a brief rendezvous with Ressler before she took off, and the two shared their first kiss (!) before Liz made her sudden escape, pointing Ressler’s own gun at him as she walked away.

TVLine spoke with executive producers Jon Bokenkamp and John Eisendrath about the premiere, including that long-awaited smooch, the decision to recast Dom and where the task force goes from here, now that Liz is in the wind.

TVLINE | I’ll admit, after Brian Dennehy’s passing, I assumed Dom wouldn’t survive his coma, and the character would no longer be on the show. But now, after watching this episode, it seems Dom is more integral than ever. Was recasting the only logical option?
EISENDRATH | It’s always difficult to make that kind of decision. It is incredibly sad that people we’ve come to know and work with and admire have passed away. In this case, while on the one hand [Dennehy] is irreplaceable, on the other hand, the story was at a place where [Dom] was absolutely instrumental in it. He’s the central point of the story. He knows a truth that everyone is trying to figure out. So while it was a difficult decision to do, we felt it was necessary, and we hope people understand that.

The Blacklist Season 8 PremiereTVLINE | We knew, ever since last season’s finale, that Liz was going to betray Red after siding with her mother — but her betrayal of the entire task force was more unexpected. Why have her blow up all of her relationships so thoroughly?
BOKENKAMP | The members of the task force are her friends. We don’t go into the personal lives of these characters a lot, so they do start to feel like a family, and it is a betrayal. It’s a hard decision for her to make, but it’s a binary one. I don’t think she has the ability to turn against Reddington with the task force. She feels that push is too hard, that they are aligned with him, and Katarina would argue they’re being lied to in the same way that Liz is being deceived. As difficult as this choice is, she really has no choice but to push back in the hardest way possible. The fallout from that, with all of the members — everyone has a perspective on this. It’s going to be interesting to watch how everyone reacts, how they feel about it, and what that betrayal does to the task force — how they hold together, or don’t, with this decision that she’s made.

TVLINE | And this isn’t the first time she’s gone rogue, either. She shot Tom Connolly, she faked her own death, and on multiple occasions, the task force has given her the benefit of the doubt and brought her back into the fold. Will any of the task force members have a hard time forgiving Liz after this?
EISENDRATH | Most of the people on the task force blame Reddington for what has happened to Liz. Before he came into her life, she had a perfect life. She had a life where she was innocent and kind and enthusiastic and loved everything about her life, and then this mystery man comes in. And these people who have been suspicious of her — who is she, what is her connection to Reddington, what isn’t she telling us — they started very cautiously embracing her. They’ve watched over these years as someone who’s just trying to learn the truth has been denied the truth all these years, and has suffered for it and has been subjected to incredible hardship. The people who know her best are willing to give her not just the benefit of the doubt, but empathy and support.

That said, it is an incredibly hard position for them to be in. They have an immunity agreement with the very person that [Liz] is dedicated to doing whatever she has to do to get the truth from, and they’re law enforcement officers, and she’s breaking the law. It feels like a situation where, rather than say, “Enough, we’re done with you,” they are caught up in this very human tragedy.

The Blacklist Season 8 PremiereTVLINE | How do you interpret the kiss Liz and Ressler shared? It’s hard to get a read on Liz’s motivations in that scene. Is the kiss genuine? A con? A little of both?
EISENDRATH | Ressler, among everyone, was the most suspicious of Liz in the beginning. He was the most certain that she had an agenda that she was keeping from them, and over the years, he has been the one who has been closest with her in watching the pain that she has gone through — with Tom, who he initially disliked intensely but came around on, and obviously with Red. I do think there is some genuineness to it. The genuineness comes from all the years they’ve been together. It comes from their mutual understanding that they are at the end of a long journey — because this desire on Liz’s part to get the truth may lead to places that will bring them to the end of their journey — and whenever two people have this unspoken feeling for each other [and] realize that this is where they are, that latent feeling comes out. I do think it’s fine if the audience wants to read in that there is a lot of pent-up affection and emotion that is coming out in the moment.
BOKENKAMP | I agree that it is real, but I also think it’s a betrayal, right? Which is what makes the betrayal so awful.
EISENDRATH | Oh, yes, in that moment.
BOKENKAMP | In that moment, she takes his gun, it’s her way to escape and make sure he doesn’t take her in. I think it’s real, but it’s also a betrayal. That’s what’s so complex about it and potentially difficult to navigate, going forward.

Tesla’s ‘Navigate on Autopilot’ goes live in North America tonight https://briefnews.eu/teslas-navigate-on-autopilot-goes-live-in-north-america-tonight/ https://briefnews.eu/teslas-navigate-on-autopilot-goes-live-in-north-america-tonight/#respond Sat, 27 Oct 2018 11:55:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/teslas-navigate-on-autopilot-goes-live-in-north-america-tonight/

When Tesla rolled out its 9.0 software to vehicles earlier this month, it held back one feature for some additional testing: Navigate on Autopilot. Now, CEO Elon Musk tweeted that a beta test of the feature will become widely available across North America tonight. In a move that Musk has previously described as a time when “we will begin to enable full self-driving features,” it gives more control over to the car from highway on-ramp to off-ramp.

As described by Tesla:

Our most advanced Autopilot feature ever, Navigate on Autopilot is an active guidance feature that, with driver supervision, guides a car from a highway’s on-ramp to off-ramp, including suggesting lane changes, navigating highway interchanges and taking exits. It’s designed to make finding and following the most efficient path to your destination even easier on the highway when Autopilot is in use.

The driver is still supervising, and will need to confirm before the car changes lanes, but overall it could mean requiring much less interaction on these closed-access highways. Despite controversy as a result of crashes and occasional complaints, Musk said that until now Autopilot has focused on increasing safety. Even though the “full self-driving” option may be gone from Tesla’s website, it’s clearly still a goal for the company.

Update: Tesla has published a blog post that explains the feature further, how to use it and includes a video showing how to engage it. Drivers will need to enable the feature in their Autopilot menu, and it has four settings for speed based lane changes (Disabled, Mild, Average, or Mad Max) and will prompt to change lanes either to keep the car on its route, or to stay closer to its target speed.

According to Tesla, “future versions of Navigate on Autopilot will allow customers to waive the confirmation requirement if they choose to,” and its future AI chip will enable full self-driving capability on the platform. In another tweet, Musk predicted that waiving the confirmation for a lane change could arrive once “safety looks good” after about 10 million miles of driving with the feature.

Google’s Lookout will help the blind navigate their environment https://briefnews.eu/googles-lookout-will-help-the-blind-navigate-their-environment/ https://briefnews.eu/googles-lookout-will-help-the-blind-navigate-their-environment/#respond Wed, 09 May 2018 02:02:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/googles-lookout-will-help-the-blind-navigate-their-environment/

Google has announced one of its upcoming apps called Lookout as part of the annual I/O conference, and it has nothing to do with the mobile security application of the same name. The tech giant’s Lookout was designed to help the blind and the visually impaired be more independent by giving them spoken notifications about their environment. For instance, it can tell them that there’s a “chair 3 o’clock,” so they don’t bump into the object to their right. The app can also read texts, such as Exit signs over doors.

The application has four modes to choose from: Home, Work & Play, Scan or Experimental. They tell the app which elements to focus on — Home, for instance, can tell users where the furniture are if they’re doing chores or cleaning the house and need to move things away from their usual places. Work & Play can tell them where the office elevator is, or the various tools they need for their job like in the video above, wherein the app tells the user where her scissors are. Users can also try out beta features through Experimental mode. The app will use machine learning to figure out what visually impaired users deem important and worth hearing about. So, the more people use it, the better it becomes.

In its announcement, Google has recommended wearing the Pixel phone with the app installed in a lanyard around users’ necks (or putting it in a shirt pocket) with the camera facing the world. From the sound of things, it’s going to be a Pixel-exclusive upon launch, just like Google’s AI-powered image recognition tool Lens. The company eventually made Lens available on iOS and other Android phones, though, so there’s always a chance for Lookout to make its way to other devices. Before any of that happens, we first have to wait for the app to arrive on the Play Store. Google didn’t mention a specific date and only said that it’ll be available sometime this year.

MonkeyMedia’s BodyNav lets you navigate VR without getting sick https://briefnews.eu/monkeymedias-bodynav-lets-you-navigate-vr-without-getting-sick/ https://briefnews.eu/monkeymedias-bodynav-lets-you-navigate-vr-without-getting-sick/#respond Tue, 06 Feb 2018 13:38:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/monkeymedias-bodynav-lets-you-navigate-vr-without-getting-sick/

Motion sickness is one of the challenges holding back virtual reality from reaching larger audiences. And MonkeyMedia, a small tech firm in Austin, Texas, believes it has solved the problem with BodyNav, a way to navigate VR in a natural way.

BodyNav doesn’t rely on using a handheld game controller or hand controls for movement. MonkeyMedia Eric Bear said in an interview with GamesBeat that poor synchronization and interfaces between such controls and what your eyes see can make any person sick.

So Bear and his wife Janna Bear dreamed up a system where you can navigate using body movements, such as physically leaning your head forward to move forward, inside a 3D virtual landscape. You can use similar motions to move in different directions. This system allows your body to move in sync with the direction you are moving. And that reduces any problem related to motion sickness, Bear said.

It’s an interesting invention that comes from a small team that has been doing research and development for 25 years. Bear said the company has received seven patents on the invention, and it has a couple of more patent applications pending.

“We didn’t set out to solve this problem, but we found a new way of doing navigation,” Bear said.

Bear said that sensors which are already in VR headsets — accelerometers and gyroscopes — can detect the head movement. In fact, some games such as Oculus’ Dead & Buried, a Western gunslinger game, use those sensors to detect whether you are ducking behind cover in a VR gun battle. It also has applications in augmented reality and first-person video drone piloting.

By using your head to move around in VR, that means you can stopping using your fingers to do that work with game controllers. In a shooting game, that simplifies the “cognitive overload” of a game controller that mystifies all but the most dedicated hardcore gamers, Bear said.

“If you change your view and movement with your hands and still have to pull a trigger, that represents a lot of cognitive load,” Bear said. “We take the movement stuff out. Now you can sneak around corners and move fast by leaning. If it’s too complex for you to learn a controller, that’s not your failure. It’s a failure of the game designer for creating too heavy a cognitive load. It’s for us to figure out how we screwed up in designing user interfaces for people.”

If you no longer have to move your virtual body with a left thumb stick, then you only have to use your hands to worry about tasks such as aiming a gun (which can be pointed in a different direction from the one where you are moving) or pulling a trigger. That simplifies the control tasks, enables more people to learn how to navigate in VR, and reduces the motion sickness at the same time. (Of course, it will force the expert first-person shooter players to get used to a new form of navigation).

Bear said that BodyNav will be available for licensing to game developers, who can use an applications programming interface to integrate it into their VR games and other apps.

BodyNav is consistent with Bear’s belief that interfaces and virtual interactions should be “human centered,” rather than gadget centered.

Rob Bamforth, analyst at research firm Quocirca, said in a statement, “Making the physical experience align with human expectations, as I experienced with MonkeyMedia’s BodyNav technology, is critical not
only for an effective VR experience, but also for avoiding digitally induced motion sickness.”

Besides VR users, motion sickness has long bothered drone pilots and some players of 2D games as well. Traditional stereoscopic headset interfaces use multiple sensor axes (for instance, rotate left/right, pivot up/down, tip left/right) to establish viewer orientation, while requiring handheld controllers (joysticks, gamepads, keyboards, etc.) for locomotion.

Visually “moving” through space while in a sedentary posture creates sensory imbalances that can cause dizziness and nausea in the viewer, Bear said. BodyNav technology creates more intuitive virtual interactions by remapping control axes to accomplish both orientation and locomotion with natural body movement. This provides the organic equilibrium needed to circumvent sensory imbalances, he said.

Richard Garriott de Cayeux, the legendary video game pioneer (creator of the Ultima series) and private astronaut, tried out BodyNav.

“Fundamentally, MonkeyMedia has solved a really important problem within the VR community,” said Garriott de Cayeux, in a statement. He added, BodyNav “doesn’t require a joystick and you don’t get motion sickness. It has a very natural feel and seems to solve vestibular dysfunction. An outstanding solution.”

BodyNav doesn’t use custom hardware. It uses distinct sensor axes for independent functions to maintain equilibrium in the body’s proprioceptive system. Viewers simply lean, using either their head or torso, to move themselves through virtual spaces, or to move their drones through remote physical spaces. This allows the sensory receptors, which receive stimuli internally and relate to the body’s position and movement, to properly engage with virtual or remote content, synchronizing visual and vestibular (inner ear) senses and reducing motion sickness-inducing factors.

Above: How BodyNav works

“When you get motion sickness, the inner ear fluids are out of sync with your eyes,” Bear said. “You have movement in your visual field, but no expected movement in your body through your inner ear, and that tells you stomach that things are screwed up, and you get sick,” Bear said.

This idea of using body movements for navigation has been a long time coming, but it basically gets us much closer to moving more naturally, as we do in real life, in the virtual world. Bear worked on the first wave of VR in the early 1990s, and once again in a brief revival in the late 1990s.

He set it aside as VR failed, and made money inventing some other things (such as tech related to DVDs and Blu-ray discs) in the meantime that allowed him and his wife to continue their fundamental research. Overall, the Bears have more than 100 patents.

Bear said he was working with videographer Rachel Strickland on some museum-related visuals. In 2012, the Bears build an iPad app that allowed you to use the tablet as a window into a virtual world. That was done before. But they needed a navigation system where you could move through the world without using your hands (because your hands were busy holding the tablet).

“We didn’t want to muck up the user interface,” Bear said.

That led them to use the motion sensor in the tablet to detect your body movements and to translate those into motion. You can move sideways in a game world, or strafe, by leaning sideways physically.

That experiment led to the creative spark for using the navigation in other applications.

“It felt similar to riding a Segway, which is phenomenal,” Bear said. “As soon as I used the accelerometer and motion controls in VR to control the movement, the motion sickness was gone.”

The patents cover inventions known as BodyNav, Walk-in Theater, and Teleport. Walk-in Theater covers the use of your body to engage with videos, and Teleport is for piloting drones.

BodyNav, Walk-in Theater and Teleport are covered by the following U.S. patent numbers: 9,563,202; 9,579,586; 9,612,627; 9,656,168; 9,658,617; 9,782,684; 9,791,897; and 15/694,210. MonkeyMedia is self-funded.

The PC Gaming channel is presented by Intel®‘s Game Dev program.

Garmin’s New Infotainment System Can Help Navigate around Poor Weather, Not Just Traffic https://briefnews.eu/garmins-new-infotainment-system-can-help-navigate-around-poor-weather-not-just-traffic/ https://briefnews.eu/garmins-new-infotainment-system-can-help-navigate-around-poor-weather-not-just-traffic/#respond Fri, 12 Jan 2018 06:32:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/garmins-new-infotainment-system-can-help-navigate-around-poor-weather-not-just-traffic/ garmin-volvo

–

Garmin is showing off a new infotainment system at CES with features aimed to make both drivers’ and passengers’ lives simpler and more connected. The prototype (shown above) is in a Volvo, but the company is expected to make it available across the auto industry.

–

Called a scalable infotainment platform, the new system operates using an Intel Atom quad-core X7 or Intel Atom dual-core X5 processor, which were launched in 2015 and have up to 2 MB of cache. So the tech inside the tech isn’t all new, but the features are.

–

Those familiar with Volvo’s new wave of luxury interiors will notice something different in the photo and video demonstration accompanying this post: two extra knobs. These are pieces of Garmin’s infotainment system, previously seen in concepts under the name Lenexa. They provide physical rotary-knob functionality with integrated customizable screens at the center of each. They can also be used as controllers that click up and down or left and right. This concept appears to be a modified version of the Volvo XC90 dashboard.

–

Working together with the touchscreen, these dials control numerous features that aren’t typical for infotainment systems—and particularly for navigation. Garmin paired up with AccuWeather to create route guidance that pays attention to the weather. The technology will recognize bad weather on your way to your destination and could potentially show drivers which areas to avoid. Navigation info will also be available to back-seat passengers through Wi-Fi. Any passengers with tablets or smartphones will be able to access the nav and view routes from their own devices. They could also send points of interest or destinations to the main infotainment system using the same built-in connection.

–

–

The system also has Amazon Alexa integration. No smartphones are needed to access Alexa’s voice-controlled navigation or its media player or even to control Alexa-linked home automation. Did you lueave the garage open or a light on? Simply tell Alexa, and the problem is solved. Drivers can also ask Alexa a question, and the answer will be read aloud, displayed on the infotainment screen, or both.

–

There’s no word as to exactly when this system will reach production, but it’s another step forward in a constantly evolving sector.
