Ukraine has placed its troops on full combat alert, as MPs in Kiev are set to approve President Petro Poroshenko’s proposal to impose martial law following a skirmish between the Russian military and Ukrainian vessels near Crimea.

The decision to put the Ukrainian armed forces on the highest level of alert came after the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) supported Poroshenko’s earlier proposal to invoke martial law for 60 days.

The move is now awaiting the approval of the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian Parliament, who will be voting on the motion on Monday.

“Based on the NSDC decision to impose martial law, the head of the General Staff – the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – has ordered to put all units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on full combat alert,” reads a statement released by the Ukrainian Defense Ministry on Monday.

The two navies practiced sailing in formation and joint maneuvering on Friday. The ships also trained in replenishment-at-sea procedures. The drill demonstrated how “seamlessly” the allied fleets can operate, explained US Rear Admiral Karl Thomas.

Thomas, who leads the Japan-based Task Force 70, stressed that the joint exercise helped to “further the interoperability” that the allies “have been building for years.”

The Japanese flotilla was led by the nation’s newest and largest warship Kaga, which joined the navy last spring. The 27,000-ton vessel, capable of carrying up to 14 large helicopters, docked in Alava Wharf in Subic Bay, Philippines, on Saturday, along with two destroyers.

The Philippines is the first stop on the Japanese flotilla’s two-month tour in the strategic Indo-Pacific region. The ships are scheduled to visit ports in Indonesia, Singapore, India, and Sri Lanka. The flotilla’s deployment is intended to enhance cooperation with partnering navies, while “contributing to peace and stability” in the region, its commander Rear Admiral Tatsuya Fukuda said, as cited by Philippine media.

In recent years, the South China Sea had seen increased tensions between the Chinese and US navies, with both nations accusing each other of military build-up near the disputed Spratly and Paracel Islands. Earlier this year, Washington ‘disinvited’ China from the joint maritime exercise and sent bombers to fly over the Spratlys, while Beijing redeployed missile systems on the China-controlled Paracel Islands.

LONDON (Reuters) – Russia has increased its naval activity in international waters close to Norway and its military capabilities are a growing concern, Norway’s navy chief said on Thursday.

Norway has an Arctic border with Russia and its economy is highly reliant on its free access to the seas.

Beijing slams US for linking cancellation of naval drill to S. China Sea ‘militarization’ https://briefnews.eu/beijing-slams-us-for-linking-cancellation-of-naval-drill-to-s-china-sea-militarization/ https://briefnews.eu/beijing-slams-us-for-linking-cancellation-of-naval-drill-to-s-china-sea-militarization/#respond Thu, 24 May 2018 08:36:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/beijing-slams-us-for-linking-cancellation-of-naval-drill-to-s-china-sea-militarization/

China on Thursday criticized the United States for decision not to invite it to a major US-hosted naval drill in response to what it sees as Beijing’s militarization of islands in the disputed South China Sea, Reuters said. China has sovereign rights in the South China Sea and it is not realistic for the United States to use this kind of action to try to coerce it, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told reporters. Washington has revoked the Chinese navy’s invitation to participate in the RIMPAC 2018 drills, over Beijing’s “militarization” of disputed islands in the South China Sea.

US ‘disinvites’ China from Pacific Rim 2018 naval exercises over ‘militarization’ https://briefnews.eu/us-disinvites-china-from-pacific-rim-2018-naval-exercises-over-militarization/ https://briefnews.eu/us-disinvites-china-from-pacific-rim-2018-naval-exercises-over-militarization/#respond Wed, 23 May 2018 19:28:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-disinvites-china-from-pacific-rim-2018-naval-exercises-over-militarization/ The US has revoked the Chinese navy’s invitation to participate in the RIMPAC 2018 naval drills, citing Beijing’s militarization of disputed islands in the South China Sea. The two countries vie for influence in the region.

“As an initial response to China’s continued militarization of the South China Sea we have disinvited the PLA Navy from the 2018 Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise,” US Department of Defense spokesman Marine Lieutenant-Colonel Christopher Logan said in a statement on Wednesday.

At issue is the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy presence in the Spratly Islands, an archipelago also claimed by the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei.

“We have strong evidence that China has deployed anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems, and electronic jammers to contested features in the Spratly Islands region of the South China Sea,” Logan said. “We have called on China to remove the military systems immediately and to reverse course on the militarization of disputed South China Sea features.”

Washington and Beijing have repeatedly clashed over the status of the islands, with the US Navy periodically sailing through the disputed area in “freedom of navigation operations” (FONOP) and China responding with protest notes and an increased military build-up. The latest FONOP took place in March, when the guided-missile destroyer USS Mustin sailed past Mischief Reef.

Despite the ongoing tensions, Chinese vessels were invited to take part in the 2016 and 2014 RIMPAC drills. There is a precedent for revoking someone’s invitation, however: Russia was disinvited from the 2016 drills after the US accused Moscow of “aggression” in Ukraine.

China’s aircraft carrier Liaoning takes part in a military drill

Revoking Beijing’s invitation fits into the current hard line adopted by both Democrats and Republicans, who regard the military and economic rise of China as the pre-eminent challenge to global US hegemony.

Of particular concern to Washington is the Chinese naval expansion. Long-derided by US naval experts as a “brown-water navy” limited to rivers and coastal areas, the PLAN has demonstrated blue-water capabilities in recent years, and has just conducted drills with its first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning.

More than 25,000 sailors and marines from 29 countries are supposed to participate in this year’s RIMPAC exercises, whose theme is “Capable adaptive partners.” The exercises will involve 50 surface ships, five submarines, over 200 aircraft, and land forces from 17 countries. Brazil, Israel, Sri Lanka and Vietnam are taking part for the first time.

The first RIMPAC was held in 1971 as a joint exercise between the US, Australia and Canada. It was held annually until 1974, when it became a biannual affair due to its sheer size. RIMPAC 2018 is the 26th such exercise.

  • New satellite images reveal the massive scale of a Chinese naval drill earlier this month in the South China Sea.
  • The images, provided by Planet Labs Inc, confirm a Chinese carrier group has entered the vital trade waterway as part of what the Chinese navy earlier described as combat drills.
  • Sailing in a line formation more suited to visual propaganda than hard military maneuvers, the flotilla was headed by what appeared to be submarines, with aircraft above.

HANOI/HONG KONG (Reuters) – Dozens of Chinese naval vessels are exercising this week with an aircraft carrier in a large show of force off Hainan island in the South China Sea, satellite images obtained by Reuters show.

The images, provided by Planet Labs Inc, confirm a Chinese carrier group has entered the vital trade waterway as part of what the Chinese navy earlier described as combat drills that were part of routine annual exercises.

Wage Fleet Warfare On Open Waters In Futuristic Naval RTS Ardent Seas https://briefnews.eu/wage-fleet-warfare-on-open-waters-in-futuristic-naval-rts-ardent-seas/ https://briefnews.eu/wage-fleet-warfare-on-open-waters-in-futuristic-naval-rts-ardent-seas/#respond Wed, 28 Feb 2018 05:57:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wage-fleet-warfare-on-open-waters-in-futuristic-naval-rts-ardent-seas/ ardent.jpg

The RTS has waged war in all manner of battlefields, from conflicts throughout history to the void of space, but the upcoming Ardent Seas places its battles instead on the rough surface of an alien ocean, pitting destroyers and the rest of your fleets against an extraterrestrial threat.

Upon these oceans, you construct fleets of massive supercarriers, Ravager vessels bristling with drone missile batteries and liquid metal cannons, nimble gunships, and other ships in your quest against the alien enemy. On islands that dot the waters, bases can be placed and reinforced, gathering necessary resources to keep your fleet outfitted with fuel and ammo. That same applies to your opponents, both in single player or online battles, letting you attack supply lines as a useful strategy to disrupt enemy fleets.

Battles in Ardent Seas are ones of careful positioning and fleet cohesion, using hit-and-run strikes to shred armor, unleashing lightning weapons upon incoming drone swarms, and supporting your forces at sea with aerial units and base weapons like powerful railguns.

Ardent Seas is still in the midst of development and doesn’t have a release date at the moment. For more gameplay details, screenshots, and footage, you can follow the game through its site, and on Twitter or Facebook.

Claims of drug ring at US Naval Academy selling cocaine, LSD on dark web trigger probe https://briefnews.eu/claims-of-drug-ring-at-us-naval-academy-selling-cocaine-lsd-on-dark-web-trigger-probe/ https://briefnews.eu/claims-of-drug-ring-at-us-naval-academy-selling-cocaine-lsd-on-dark-web-trigger-probe/#respond Sun, 25 Feb 2018 12:07:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/claims-of-drug-ring-at-us-naval-academy-selling-cocaine-lsd-on-dark-web-trigger-probe/ US Navy investigators are looking into claims of a drug ring that was selling illegal substances over the dark web, including cocaine, LSD, and ketamine – a powerful sedative, local media reports.

As many as dozens of midshipmen are being investigated for an alleged drug abuse, Fox News reported. The investigation revolves around allegations of a drug ring at the US Naval Academy, the leading institution in charge of commissioning officers for the Navy and the Marine Corps.

As of Sunday, three Navy cadets were accused of selling cocaine, ketamine, which is a powerful sedative substance, and LSD to their classmates who purchased the drugs via the dark web using bitcoin, Fox said, citing several midshipmen currently enrolled at the academy.

The midshipmen estimated the number of students complicit in drug-dealing to be as high as two dozen. Last week, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) searched the rooms of suspects using drug-sniffing dogs, and discovered cocaine.

One female midshipman, who reportedly possessed the drug, tried to escape but was apprehended and taken for questioning. In the middle of investigation, the Naval Academy command ordered a snap drug tests for all 4,500 cadets, though the probe mainly targets the 23rd company and its roughly 150 midshipmen.

“We are continuing to work with [Naval Criminal Investigative Service] on these reported allegations,” Naval Academy spokesman Commodore David McKinney said in an emailed statement cited by the local media. He added that the Navy “has a zero tolerance for drug abuse and takes all allegations of misconduct very seriously.”

The Midshipmen Regulations Manual stipulates that the “wrongful use, possession, or willful involvement” in drugs results in mandatory separation from the Naval Academy. However, this is not the first time members of the US Navy have been investigated for drug-related offenses.

Earlier in February, it emerged that American sailors stationed in the Japanese city of Yokosuka were probed for “alleged drug use and distribution,” according to 7th Fleet spokesman Commodore Clay Doss.

In April last year, one active-duty and two retired Navy SEALs told CBS some of their colleagues were tested positive for cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana, and ecstasy. In the damning report, one of the SEALs said the growing drug epidemic inside their ranks saw “our foundation, our culture, erode in front of my eyes.”

A broke out in one of the buildings of the St. Petersburg Naval Institute in Russia’s second largest city. Over a hundred firefighters, assisted by the cadets, took part in battling the flames.

Smoke blanketed the Vasilyevsky Island district of the city Friday night, as the flames engulfed a mid-18th century building belonging to St. Petersburg’s oldest educational establishment.

Twenty-two firefighting vehicles and over 100 personnel were dispatched to the scene, Russia’s Emergencies Ministry said. The fire was classed at level three, just two notches shy of the most difficult rating. Additional firefighting crews were called in as a result.

It took the firefighters, assisted by the naval cadets’ firefighting team, over two hours to contain the blaze. The flames were stamped out before it could spread to nearby buildings, with their old, mostly wooden internal structures. No-one was injured.

A mobile chemical lab was called in to the scene to try and determine the cause of the fire.

Christmas gov’t funding bill has $4.6bn for missile defense and costly naval repairs https://briefnews.eu/christmas-govt-funding-bill-has-4-6bn-for-missile-defense-and-costly-naval-repairs/ https://briefnews.eu/christmas-govt-funding-bill-has-4-6bn-for-missile-defense-and-costly-naval-repairs/#respond Fri, 22 Dec 2017 19:22:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/christmas-govt-funding-bill-has-4-6bn-for-missile-defense-and-costly-naval-repairs/

A government funding bill signed by US President Donald Trump allocates over $ 4.6 billion for missile defense from North Korea and Iran, as well as repairs to two destroyers damaged in collisions with merchant ships.

In addition to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, Trump signed the continuing resolution (CR) that will fund the federal government through January 19. Before departing the White House for the Christmas holiday, Trump pointed out the continuing resolution includes approximately $ 4 billion for missile defense programs.

Approved by Congress on Thursday, the bill provides $ 2.4 billion for missile defense procurement, $ 1.3 billion for research and development, and $ 43 million for operations and maintenance, according to The Hill. Another $ 200 million is earmarked for building a missile interceptor facility in Alaska.

Improvements to missile defense were one of the features in Trump’s new National Security Strategy, announced earlier this week. The “layered missile defense system” is intended to defend the US against threats from North Korea and Iran, the strategy says, and is “not intended to undermine strategic stability or disrupt longstanding strategic relationships with Russia or China.”

In May, the US conducted a first successful intercept of a target simulating an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with the ground-based midcourse (GMD) system deployed in Alaska. A Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system successfully intercepted an intermediate range (IRBM) target in July.

The CR also provided $ 674 million for repairs to the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyers USS Fitzgerald and USS John S. McCain, which were damaged in collisions with merchant ships over the summer.

The Fitzgerald was struck by a cargo ship off Yokosuka, Japan on June 17. The collision killed seven sailors. Ten sailors died when the McCain was hit by an oil tanker near the Straits of Malacca on August 21. The Seventh Fleet temporarily suspended operations in the wake of the incidents and disciplined a number of senior officers. The US Navy blamed lack of training and crew exhaustion for the mishaps.

The cost of repairing the two damaged destroyers is almost enough to buy the Navy an entirely new ship. A 2013 contract with General Dynamics’ Bath Iron Works in Maine for four destroyers priced them at around $ 700 million each.

The continuing resolution staves off a federal government shutdown for a month, giving Congress time to come up with a more permanent solution. It also delays the spending cuts mandated under the 2011 Budget Control Act, also known as sequestration.
