Breathtaking photos of the natural world can bring attention to crises, highlight important environmental issues, or simply fascinate us as they reveal the world’s bizarre and beautiful creatures.

Eye-catching images of animals can also garner photographers fame and some fortune. Each year, the Natural History Museum in London crowns one lucky camera-holder Wildlife Photographer of the Year. The prize brings international recognition and monetary prizes up to £10,000. (Judges also award a Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year who’s under the age of 18.) 

The images that made the list of winners and finalists this year depict a mother gorilla mourning her dead babe, owls that found refuge in a rusty urban spot, and a Caribbean flamingo behind the steering wheel of a car.

The grand prize went to Marsel van Oosten from the Netherlands, who captured a stunning shot of a pair of monkeys   in the mountains of China.

Van Oosten, the grand-prize winner, is a professional nature photographer who runs a photography tour business with his wife. He nabbed this photo of a “golden couple” in the Qinling Mountains of China.

Less than 4,000 golden snub-nosed monkeys remain in the snowy mountains of west-central China. Human settlement, as well as logging and hunting, have pushed the furry, blue-nosed creatures towards the brink of extinction. 

“Many have been pushed into high-altitude isolation, where they leap across branches, traverse icy rivers, and weather long winters at nearly 10,000 feet, shielded by that coveted coat,” according to National Geographic. 

Van Oosten had a tough time keeping up with the monkeys as they hopped from tree to tree, but after some slips and stumbles, he captured this shot of a pair resting. 

Underwater photographer Tony Wu was tickled to meet this Asian sheepshead wrasse off the coast of Japan’s Sado Island. The fish’s forehead reveals the “burning desire of a male in love,” he said.

This Asian sheepshead wrasse uses its bulbous red forehead to attract females. If there aren’t enough men around, older female wrasse can also turn into males. They grow testicles, show off their big pink foreheads, and act aggressive.  

“This,” Wu said, “is the face of a fish looking for love.”

The image was highly commended in the contest, and the underwater photographer hopes his work inspires others to appreciate and protect the world’s oceans.

French photographer Greg Lecoeur found this frogfish surrounded by plastic bits in Raja Ampat, Indonesia.

Lecoeur’s image was also highly commended.

Normally, the fish thrives in Sargassum seaweed habitats, where it stalks and captures prey. But with plastic now covering the world’s oceans in a “seventh continent” of trash, those traditional hunting methods aren’t always possible.

More than 90% of the world’s plastic never gets recycled, and instead ends up in landfills or out in nature.

The BBC programme hosted by Chris Packham investigates the greatest mysteries of nature. 

Tonight’s Nature’s Weirdest Events episode took to a cave in Slovenia, where a baffling creature had been discovered. 

Chris said: “Since 1823 tourists have flocked here to explore the park’s eerie caverns and for centuries there have been tales of dragons. 

“Discovered hiding out in the depths of the cave, this creature was believed to have been the dragon’s spawn.”

The olm is a type of salamander that’s so rare, few people have ever seen one. 

They are the largest animal to dwell in caves and live underwater. 

Olms don’t have lungs but absorb water through their feathery gills. 

Chris added: “They’re completely blind. They use sensors around their mouth to track down their prey. 

“If they can’t find food olms are able to digest some of their own body. They can survive without eating anything for 10 years.”

Olms can live until 100 years old and up until recently, no one had ever seen a baby, leading many to believe they were immortal. 

They can also resist fire which prompted locals to draw comparisons between the mythical dragons and the slithering olms.

In 2016 one researcher managed to see the breeding process take place, thanks to an experiment in one of his own tanks. 

Biologist Saso Weldt said: “I never thought I would see the egg of the olm.”

The first baby olms ever captured on camera emerged four months later, when 52 eggs hatched. 

Viewers of Nature’s Weirdest Events were baffled by the bizarre creature. 

One Twitter user wrote: “OK, so #Olms win ‘Strangest Creature on Earth by a LONG Way’ – thanks for introducing us @ChrisGPackham  #naturesweirdestevents”. 

Another shared: “Olm can live to be around 100. Survive without eating for 10 years and can regenerate lost legs. So interesting.”

The programme also explored the mysterious deaths of 300 reindeer in Norway last year.

Rose hips can grow just about anywhere and boast a plethora of medicinal benefits. The rose hip, also referred to as rose haw or rose hep, is the fruit of a rose. The plant, which grows up to 10 feet tall, was showcased on an episode of Alaska: The Last Frontier. The Kilcher clan harvested wild rose hips growing on their expansive homestead in Alaska to use them in jellies, sauces, mash, and natural home remedies.

The most frequently harvested rose hips come from the wild dog rose plant, according to Herb Wisdom. Once the fragrant white flower has bloomed and its petals have fallen off, it is time to harvest the rose hip. They are known to be an excellent source of vitamin C and contain 50 percent more of the essential vitamin than oranges. Because of the high amount of vitamin C found in rose hips, they are often considered an immune system booster.

Rose hips can be eaten raw, but only after being crushed through a blender. They can also be soaked overnight in water and cooked on medium heat for 30 minutes and then eaten. The hips are often used in herbal remedies for stomach disorders, diarrhea, constipation, gallstones, gallbladder ailments, lower urinary tract and kidney disorders, gout, back and leg pain, diabetes, high cholesterol, and quenching thirst, according to WebMD.

  • Diuretic and Laxative — Due to the fruit acids and pectin round in rose hips, the pods are often made into a tea and sipped in an effort to help relieve constipation. The hips are also known to relieve the symptoms of kidney disorders. To make the rose hip tea, pour one cup of boiling water over one tablespoon of dried and crushed harvested hips. Allow the mixture to steep and then drain out any chunks of remaining hips before drinking. Honey can be added to bring a sweet flavor to the medicinal tea.
  • Skin Treatment — Rose hips are also thought to possess astringent qualities which may help reduce the appearance of skin burns, acne, and scars. The oil found in rose hips may be astringent but it is not known to dry out the skin, but instead rejuvenates it by trapping moisture in the cells. The high content of vitamin A found in rose hips may also help prevent and minimize wrinkles.
  • Immune System — Rose hips, due to the presence of vitamin A, may also help prevent infections from both viruses and bacteria.

  • Anti-Inflammatory — Rose hips have also been used to treat minor wounds and skin inflammations. German researchers reportedly found that rose hips may provide relief to rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. Patients with osteoarthritis have also noted finding some relief and a reduction in swelling after infiltrating rose hips into their daily routine.
  • Antioxidants — Rose hips also possess significant levels of antioxidants; carotenoids, flavonoids, polyphenols, leucoanthocyanins, and catechins. Because of these properties, rose hips are thought by some to be a possible natural cancer and cardiovascular disease preventative.

When cultivating and harvesting rose hips, never snip off the old flowers. They must die naturally before the hips are ready for harvesting. Rose hips can be dried naturally in the sun, dehydrated, or frozen for storage without losing their nutrients. Do not use a metal container to store the rose hips due to their high content of fruit acids. Although rose hips are not known to cause any negative medical or allergic reaction, it is always advisable to consult a doctor before using any type of natural medicine.
