Pro-Israeli British nationalists scuffled with police and pro-Palestine demonstrators at this year’s Al Quds march in London.

The protest was part of Quds Day, an annual protest against Zionism the current and historical actions of Israeli state. Counter-protests were arranged by supporters of Israel and were attended by British nationalists opposed to the event’s link to Lebanese group Hezbollah. A large police presence mostly kept the two groups apart.

Counter protesters waived England flags as well as banners of the People’s Charter Foundation – a self-described “diverse group of passionate Tory, UKIP, and other patriots,” who “call for the conservation of British heritage and values, including ‘rule of law’,” according to their website.

Attempts to cross police lines led to clashes with law enforcement and demonstrators which led to arrests by police.

Innovative Minds, an Islamic group involved in the Al Quds event, in a Facebook photo album of the march claimed that: “The zionists had aligned with far right nazi/football hooligan groups against the Al Quds rally, they tried attacking the protest several times along the route of the march.”

“The police to their credit managed to successfully repelled them most of the time,” it added.

In turn, The People’s Charter Foundation in its own photo dump of the event, claimed that “police brought along horses to charge the patriots, and kettled us, claiming we could incite violence. Supposedly the Islamists waving signs saying to gas people were peaceful.”

Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers have drafted a proposal to celebrate December 11 as a national holiday marking the victory of the Russian armed forces over international terrorism in the Middle East.

The bill published on the lower house website on Monday reads that the date was chosen because on December 11 this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a personal visit to the Russian Air Force base at Khmeimim in Syria. Putin announced that the military operation against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) and its allies in Syria had ended in victory, and ordered the withdrawal of the main part of the Russian military group.

“It was the Russian military that saved not only the Middle East but also the world as a whole from this terrible threat and contributed to the preservation of Syria as a state,” the authors of the bill wrote. “Russian military servicemen destroyed the largest nest of terrorism in the world. This was not just a victory over a small group of terrorists, it was a victory over international organized terror, unlikely to be repeated in future.”

Russia first deployed an air force contingent in Syria in 2015, after receiving a request for military help from the Syrian government, which continues to battle IS and affiliated terrorist groups. Russian warplanes began launching airstrikes on terrorists in Syria on September 30, 2015. Their work aided the Syrian military in achieving considerable success in driving jihadist forces out of the country.

In March  2016, President Putin ordered a partial withdrawal of Russian forces after they achieved all of the objectives that had been initially set for them.

Later that year, in October, the Russian parliament ratified an agreement which Putin signed to keep the Russian Air Force base in Syria there on an indefinite basis. In December of this year, the lower house okayed a different agreement with Syria that allows the Tartus navy refueling facility in Syria to be transformed into a fully-fledged navy base, capable of harboring nuclear-powered ships.

A public opinion poll conducted by the state-run Russian agency VTSIOM in October this year showed that almost three-quarters of Russians believe their country should continue helping Syria after the armed conflict there is over. Seventy-five percent of respondents said they would like their country to continue sending humanitarian aid to Syria.

Fifteen members of the radical Jewish group Lehava suspected of attacking and threatening Arab men dating Jewish women have been arrested in Israel, including the group’s controversial leader, Ben-Tzion Gopstein.

The raids and arrests were carried out simultaneously in Jerusalem, northern and southern Israel and in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.

“Fifteen suspects known to the police as active in the Lehava organization were arrested or detained for questioning during the night as part of a police investigation on suspicion that they acted to locate and threaten [Arab] minority members with connections to Jewish young women or girls,” read a police statement, as quoted by AFP.

The raids, the police said, were the result of an undercover operation that uncovered evidence of “organized and pre-meditated activity believed to have been carried out by the suspects, known members of Lehava.”

Ben-Tzion Gopstein, Lehava’s leader, insists that he has done nothing wrong and claimed the police had “succumbed to pressure from the extreme left,” according to Haaretz.

Gopstein has previously gotten into trouble with the law on multiple occasions. In 2014, he was arrested for racist incitement and later charged with trying to stop a police officer from carrying out their duty, while in 2015 he was investigated for condoning burning churches to the ground in accordance with ancient Jewish commandment against “idol worship.” Last year, he was also acquitted of an assault on two left-wing activists.

In addition to his run-ins with the law, Gopstein has also led protest marches against gay pride events and the LGBT community.

Founded in 2009, Lehava, a Hebrew acronym for “To Prevent Assimilation in the Holy Land,” is opposed to interracial and inter-religious marriage. At a wedding between a Muslim man and Jewish woman in Tel Aviv in 2014, its members staged a protest rally yelling “Death to Arabs!” In addition to harassing minorities, the group also provides “safe houses” for Jewish women getting out of relationships with Arabs, and has attempted to portray this as a national scourge, Haaretz reports.

Lehava has also been accused of spreading anti-Arab and anti-Christian propaganda. In April, some Israelis were arrested for allegedly attacking Arabs with knives and other weapons after watching one of their videos.

In July, the Israel Religious Action Center filed a petition to the High Court of Justice for Gopstein to be charged with incitement to racism and violence and for Lehava to be declared a criminal organization.

Are Catalonian nationalists copying Maidan's ‘propaganda’ handbook? (VIDEOS) https://briefnews.eu/are-catalonian-nationalists-copying-maidans-propaganda-handbook-videos/ https://briefnews.eu/are-catalonian-nationalists-copying-maidans-propaganda-handbook-videos/#respond Tue, 17 Oct 2017 16:47:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/are-catalonian-nationalists-copying-maidans-propaganda-handbook-videos/

A new video promoting Catalonian democracy looks suspiciously similar to a production made about the 2014 Maidan protests in Ukraine – and many online are not impressed.

‘Help Catalonia. Save Europe’ is a new video published on the YouTube account of Catalonian cultural organization, Omnium Cultural.

It starts with a woman standing on an out-of-focus street, saying, “This is Barcelona.” She points to people on the street and says, “We, the Catalans are taking back the streets to protest peacefully.”

The 2014 Ukrainian video also begins with a woman standing on an out-of-focus street, saying, “I am Ukrainian,” before going on to say, “I want you to know why thousands of people in my country are on the streets.”

Both videos contain footage of police brutality, and both call on the audience to help them by sharing the video to defend democracy, or European values.

At the end of both videos, viewers are warned to support the cause, “before it’s too late.”

The video was shared on social media and raised some questions, criticisms and debate.

Charlottesville is suing to keep out militias and armed white nationalists https://briefnews.eu/charlottesville-is-suing-to-keep-out-militias-and-armed-white-nationalists/ https://briefnews.eu/charlottesville-is-suing-to-keep-out-militias-and-armed-white-nationalists/#respond Sat, 14 Oct 2017 00:21:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/charlottesville-is-suing-to-keep-out-militias-and-armed-white-nationalists/ FILE PHOTO: A photograph of Charlottesville victim Heather Heyer is seen amongst flowers left at the scene of the car attack on a group of counter-protesters that took her life during the Thomson Reuters

Americans were shocked by more than the hate speech at a Unite the Right demonstration in the university town of Charlottesville, Virginia, this August.

Also unsettling for many was the sight of the fatigue-wearing men carrying AR-15 rifles who descended on the city to form protective perimeters around the white nationalists for the stated purpose of protecting the protesters’ free speech.

Governor Terry McAuliffe later claimed that police held back from intervening in the clashes that ensued, and left one dead, for fear of sparking a confrontation with the militias.

Now, after torch-carrying racists marched once more in Charlottesville earlier this month and the well-known white nationalist Richard Spencer vowed more demonstrations there, the city is asking courts to stop the groups from coming back.

A lawsuit filed today argues that gun-toting militias, organized hate groups sporting weapons, and the leftist self-defense organizations who squared off against both all constituted paramilitary organizations, which are banned by the state. It cites three different laws — one in the Virginia state Constitution, along with two parts of the state criminal code — that specifically bar unregulated militia activity.

In addition to those state laws, the city is invoking Supreme Court precedent, including a 1982 case pitting a group of Vietnamese fisherman against members of the Ku Klux Klan in Texas, whose members had terrified the immigrants. In that ruling, the high court held that “the proliferation of private military organizations threatens to result in lawlessness and destructive chaos.”

Through the suit, Charlottesville asks the court to prevent the return of the militias and hate groups. “Without such relief,” the plaintiffs claim, “Charlottesville will be forced to relive the frightful spectacle of August 12: an invasion of roving paramilitary bands and unaccountable vigilante peacekeepers.”

The plaintiffs, which also include various Charlottesville businesses, allege that the behavior of the militias and hate groups was not speech protected by the First Amendment or self defense protected by the Second Amendment, but rather an attempt to intimidate and violently harass others:

“These vigilante militia members (Militia Defendants) carried assault rifles as they patrolled the sidewalks in combat boots, military-grade body armor, and, in most cases, camouflage uniforms. They were equipped to inflict massive harm upon a moment’s notice from their commanders. Whatever their stated intentions, these groups terrified local residents and caused attendees to mistake them for authorized military personnel. In reality, they answered to no governmental authority, and their activity draws no support from the Second Amendment, which protects an individual right to self-defense and extols the virtues of a ‘well regulated Militia,’ while creating no right to form unregulated private armies or private peacekeeping forces.”

The suit may be the first of its kind in decades. Mark Pitcavage, an expert on extremism with the Anti-Defamation League, wrote on Twitter, it was “to my knowledge the first use of such a lawsuit since the early 1980s.”

In addition to the complaints against self-designated militias like the Three Percenters, the suit alleges that the white-nationalist groups at the center of the August 12 rally also acted not as lawful demonstrators, but as private military organizations, clad in uniforms of polos and khakis and equipped with shields and melee weapons.

The city’s argument zeros in on the white nationalists’ extensive preparations for combat:

“Several white-nationalist organizations came to Charlottesville to fight. Applying techniques developed well in advance, affiliated bands of alt-right warriors used clubs, flagpoles, and shields to batter their ideological opponents. Sporting matching uniforms and weaponry — and with command structures to coordinate their actions—they functioned as paramilitary units. These paramilitary organizations and their leaders (the Alt-Right Defendants) wielded their weapons on August 12 not “as individuals” exercising their Second Amendment rights to self defense, but “as members of a fighting force.”

If successful, the suit could provide a model for other cities beyond Virginia wishing to keep protests free of guns. Before the August rally, a state pre-emption law that prevents localities from making their own gun regulations blocked Charlottesville from prohibiting firearms at the event. As The Trace reported in August, Virginia is one of 36 states where laws require cities to allow guns in some form at protests.

But 28 additional states also, like Virginia, have another set of laws allowing governments to regulate unauthorized military groups, according to an analysis by attorneys at Everytown for Gun Safety, a donor to The Trace.

That means that even though cities in many states may not be able to implement blanket bans on gun-carrying protesters, they may be able to take action against the organized, heavily armed groups whose presence may chill the speech of counter protesters, terrorize bystanders, and inhibit law enforcement’s ability to keep confrontations from spiraling out of control.

Pitcavage noted that it is hard to judge the strength of all the suit’s allegations. Militias have kept to themselves for the last several decades, and have rarely ventured into crowded towns and cities. Until the Trump era, cities now contending with white nationalists and armed extremists had little need to enforce the laws that Charlottesville’s suit will test.

Public support for Polish ruling nationalists at all-time high – poll https://briefnews.eu/public-support-for-polish-ruling-nationalists-at-all-time-high-poll/ https://briefnews.eu/public-support-for-polish-ruling-nationalists-at-all-time-high-poll/#respond Fri, 13 Oct 2017 16:17:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/public-support-for-polish-ruling-nationalists-at-all-time-high-poll/

Poland’s ruling nationalists saw their public support rise to an all-time high in October, an opinion poll showed on Friday. The Law and Justice (PiS) party has benefited from record-low unemployment and the popularity of their welfare-spending policies, Reuters reports. Opposition groups that accuse the party of undermining democratic standards in Poland have seen their public backing fall in recent months. According to CBOS, a pollster overseen by the office of the prime minister, public support for PiS has risen to 47 percent, up three percentage points from a month earlier. The biggest opposition party, centrist Civic Platform, which ruled Poland for eight years until 2015, is supported by 16 percent.

A small group of white nationalists led by Richard Spencer marched through the University of Virginia campus in Charlottesville on Saturday evening, local media outlets reported.

The group, carrying the same tiki torches they held in the now-infamous August rally, chanted “you will not replace us” and “we will be back” in front of the Robert E. Lee statue that the city plans to remove.

The rally lasted just 20 minutes, CBS affiliate WTVR reported.

“It was a planned flash mob,” Spencer told The Washington Post, calling the event a “great success” and adding that the rally had been planned for a long time. “We wanted to prove that we came in peace in May, we came in peace in August, and we come again in peace.”

He continued: “Our identity matters. We are not going to stand by and allow people to tear down these symbols of our history and our people — and we’re going to do this again.”

The rally comes nearly two months after the “Unite the Right” rally, which drew scores of white nationalists, white supremacists, and neo-Nazis, as well as counter-protesters. The event turned deadly when a driver plowed into a crowd of pedestrians, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

Here are some images and videos from the scene:

Ukrainian nationalists battle police outside court after anti-Maidan activists declared ‘not guilty’ https://briefnews.eu/ukrainian-nationalists-battle-police-outside-court-after-anti-maidan-activists-declared-not-guilty/ https://briefnews.eu/ukrainian-nationalists-battle-police-outside-court-after-anti-maidan-activists-declared-not-guilty/#respond Tue, 19 Sep 2017 00:26:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ukrainian-nationalists-battle-police-outside-court-after-anti-maidan-activists-declared-not-guilty/ Thirty-five police officers were injured after Ukrainian far-right activists attempted to break into the court in Chernomorsk, where a case against 19 anti-Maidan activists over their involvement in the deadly Odessa incidents on May 2, 2014 collapsed on Monday.

Several dozen nationalists camped in advance outside the Soviet-era building 10km south of central Odessa, which was heavily guarded by riot police and military units, following local reports that the activists had stripped the nearby pavements for projectiles, and began to assemble tires for barricades.

As the verdict was read out inside, a wall of attackers lined up against the police, who had locked their arms, in a bid to enter the building, and prevent the cleared men from being escorted out.

On command, the activists, charged at the human wall, releasing pepper spray into the officers’ faces, who replied with tear gas sprays of their own.

Dozens of journalists and bystanders present recorded the incident, while some tried to talk to persuade the protesters, many clad in military gear or wearing t-shirts with the Ukrainian trident – a symbol co-opted by far-right groups – to stop the attacks.

The pattern of clashes was repeated several times, and at one point an activist unloaded the contents of a fire hydrant into a riot policeman’s face.

“As always, the law enforcement officials keeping the peace became the ‘hostages’ of the ‘people’s fury.’ After lengthy skirmishes with the use of gas and other specialized means, the situation was brought under control,” wrote Ruslan Forostyak, the head of the regional national guard department, who said that several of the instigators have been charged with hooliganism.

‘No evidence of guilt’

May 2, 2014 was the culmination of months of clashes between the nationalist and “pro-Russian” factions in the Black Sea port, which resulted in at least 48 deaths.

The civil disorder began with a march by far-right football fans, proceeded to firearm exchanges and Molotov cocktail-throwing, and ended with a fire in a government building, where mostly anti-Kiev activists had been boxed in, where the majority perished.

The accused, five of whom have been kept in detention, and two of whom are Russian citizens, each faced up to 15 years in jail.

But the judge dismissed the prosecutors’ case.

“There is no evidence to prove that the accused were guilty of the stated crimes. In fact, the prosecution did not even try to present any evidence,” he read out during the verdict, suggesting that the accused may have been doing nothing more than helping police maintain control.

The judge said that insufficient interviews had been conducted, some evidence had been collected illegally, and noted that although there was violence on both sides, only the pro-Russian activists were brought to face justice.

Upon their release, two participants were re-arrested, this time on charges of inciting separatism. Monday’s trial pertained only to the street clashes on May 2, with separate proceedings still to come on responsibility for the fire.

Why white nationalists chose Charlottesville — a liberal and cosmopolitan university town https://briefnews.eu/why-white-nationalists-chose-charlottesville-a-liberal-and-cosmopolitan-university-town/ https://briefnews.eu/why-white-nationalists-chose-charlottesville-a-liberal-and-cosmopolitan-university-town/#respond Sat, 19 Aug 2017 06:27:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-white-nationalists-chose-charlottesville-a-liberal-and-cosmopolitan-university-town/ charlottesvilleGetty Images

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The white nationalists behind last weekend’s violent rally found an appealing target in the historic town where Thomas Jefferson founded a university and an outspoken, progressive mayor declared his city the “capital of the resistance” to President Donald Trump.

For more than a year, the Charlottesville government has also been engaged in contentious public soul searching over its Confederate monuments, a process that led to the decision to remove a statue of Gen. Robert E. Lee.

All those factors made this community a symbolically powerful backdrop for what’s considered the largest white nationalist gathering in at least a decade.

“We are a progressive, tolerant city. We are also a Southern city,” Mayor Mike Signer said. About a year and a half ago, Charlottesville “decided to launch on the difficult but essential work of finally telling the truth about race. That made us a target for tons of people who don’t want to change the narrative.”

On the eve of Saturday’s rally, hundreds of white men marched through the University of Virginia campus, holding torches and chanting racist and anti-Semitic slogans. The next morning, many looked like they were dressed for war as they made their way to Emancipation Park.

They clashed with counter-protesters in a stunning display of violence before authorities forced the crowd to disperse. Later, a car plowed into a crowd of demonstrators, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others.

With a population of around 47,000, Charlottesville is a progressive island in a conservative part of Virginia.

The funky, cosmopolitan town is nestled in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s known for being home to Jefferson’s plantation, Monticello, and the place where the Dave Matthews Band got its start.

The heart of its downtown is an open-air pedestrian mall lined with restaurants, bars and quirky boutiques. Tourists flock to Charlottesville not only for the history and culture but also to visit the wineries that dot the countryside just outside of town.

Charlottesville was easily overwhelmed by the numbers that showed up Saturday, said Ed Ayers, a leading Civil War scholar who taught at UVA for decades before moving to Richmond.

Despite Virginia’s bloody part in the Civil War, Ayers said, the Lee statue does not have a significant historical connection to Charlottesville. The city “did not play a central role in the war at all, he explained, and the statue was not erected until the 1920s, when Jim Crow laws were eroding the rights of black citizens.

Charlottesville was just “a very clear symbol they could go to and have a protest,” Ayers said.

University of Virginia vigilUVA FacebookThe city is proud of Jefferson’s university, a prestigious school with graduates that include prominent figures such as Robert F. Kennedy. But UVA is also a school largely built by slaves and where professors had ideological connections to the resistance movement that followed the Brown vs. Board of Education school desegregation decision.

The university did not admit black students until 1950. Last year, figures provided by the school show only 6 percent of students were black.

White nationalist leader Richard Spencer — a UVA grad who was one of the most high-profile speakers lined up for the rally — echoed Ayers’ perspective. He said that the Confederate monuments are a metaphor for something “much bigger,” referring to “white dispossession and the de-legitimization of white people in this country and around the world.”

Saturday was not Spencer’s first demonstration in Charlottesville. In May, he was among another torch-wielding group that rallied around the statue at night, chanting, “You will not replace us.” Later that month, local right-wing blogger and UVA graduate Jason Kessler applied for the permit for Saturday’s event.

Then, in July, about 50 Ku Klux Klan members rallied at the statue, where they were met by more than 1,000 protesters. That, too, made national news.

Oren Segal, director of Anti-Defamation League’s Center on Extremism, said hate groups are eager to exploit media attention.

“When they saw a built-in opportunity to build off the other two rallies, it was clear they decided, ‘This is the place. We’re going to get more attention here,’” he said.

Virginia’s closely watched governor’s race, one of only two in the nation this year, also helped draw attention.

Republican Corey Stewart successfully made the statue’s proposed removal a key talking point in the GOP primary, which he almost won despite being an underdog.

Stewart, a one-time state chairman of Trump’s campaign, made several campaign stops in Charlottesville. At least one public appearance was with Kessler.

Katie Straight, who stood outside the downtown theater Wednesday where a memorial service for Heyer took place, agreed that the city’s “democratic” discussion about what to do with the statues had contributed to the scope of what happened Saturday.

“I also think that you have a group of angry people in this country who are looking for a place to physically terrorize those who might challenge their legacy of power,” Straight said. “And Charlottesville, in this historic moment, happens to be that place. I hope and pray it’s the last place, but I don’t think it will be.”
