Z Nation Cancelled at Syfy https://briefnews.eu/z-nation-cancelled-at-syfy/ https://briefnews.eu/z-nation-cancelled-at-syfy/#respond Sun, 23 Dec 2018 11:48:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/z-nation-cancelled-at-syfy/

Z Nation‘s fifth season finale will now serve as a series finale: Syfy has cancelled the long-running zombie drama. The news was first announced by producer David Michael Latt.

“We wanted to tell you face to face… that we were not renewed for Season 6,” Latt said in a late-night Periscope video on Friday. “We’re stopping at Season 5. We’re very sad, but we’re also really grateful with the opportunities that we had on the show.

“This is not the end of anything,” he continued. “This is just the beginning of a lot of things,” including the Netflix prequel series Black Summer, which received an eight-episode order back in July. The series stars Hart of Dixie alumna Jaime King as a mother who, having been torn from her daughter, embarks upon a harrowing journey to find the girl. Alongside a group of American refugees, King’s protagonist “must brave a hostile new world and make brutal decisions” in the midst of a zombie apocalypse’s deadliest summer, according to the official logline.

  • A draft report seen by The Washington Post shows how effectively Russia twisted Google, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media to influence the right voters and achieve its reported goal — the election of Donald Trump as president of the United States.
  • The goldmine of posts and comments provided by the big tech firms for the Senate allowed researchers the first major data dive into responses to Russian influence and is “the most sweeping analysis yet of Russia’s disinformation campaign” The Post reported on Sunday.

The Washington Post reported that it has seen the very first deep data analysis that covers post-by-post the social media behaviors across the known Russian accounts for a period spanning several years until the middle of 2017 when they were effectively unmasked.

It is the first study of the millions of posts provided by major technology firms to the Senate Intelligence Committee, and it provides a new window into the many ways that Russia grasped the power of social media, built their understanding of it, and then manipulated it for the political purposes to help elect Donald Trump president.

US wants China to ‘behave like a normal nation’ & respect international laws – Pompeo https://briefnews.eu/us-wants-china-to-behave-like-a-normal-nation-respect-international-laws-pompeo/ https://briefnews.eu/us-wants-china-to-behave-like-a-normal-nation-respect-international-laws-pompeo/#respond Thu, 01 Nov 2018 01:09:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-wants-china-to-behave-like-a-normal-nation-respect-international-laws-pompeo/

Washington is pressuring Beijing to act like a “normal nation” on the world stage, Mike Pompeo has repeated, accusing China, ironically, of disregarding international laws and seeking to impose “decades of pain” around the globe.

“We’re very worried that China will put the people in many countries around the world, in Africa and Central America and Latin America, in a debt trap that will cause those countries decades of pain,” the Secretary of State said on the Laura Ingraham Show, stressing that Donald Trump’s administration is the first one to recognize the danger, one which it is more-than-willing to tackle.

China is probably, over the long term, the biggest challenge, national security challenge that faces our country.

For the US, among the biggest threats posed by China is the theft of intellectual property, which Trump has vowed to root out, Pompeo reiterated. Conveniently unsealed on Tuesday, charges by the Justice Department against a group of Chinese intelligence officers who allegedly tried to steal US aviation secrets is the latest “mosaic of our strategic effort” to push back against Beijing, the diplomat noted.

Implementing its vision of “fair and reciprocal trade” with China is also one of the main objectives the White House is currently pursuing. China’s growing economic might around the globe amid the ongoing Sino-American trade war remains a major concern, Pompeo pointed out.

To battle the Chinese threat, the US will continue to engage in a “multi-pronged effort” to force it to “behave like a normal nation on commerce and with respect to the rules of international law,” Pompeo stated.

China’s direct investment in Africa has grown significantly over the years, especially in Algeria, Zambia, Kenya, Republic of Congo, and Nigeria. While there is no official Chinese data, around $ 143 billion in loans were also extended by the Chinese government, banks and contractors to African nations this century, the China Africa Research Initiative estimates. Beijing has also directed $ 250 billion in direct investments to the Latin American and Caribbean region (LAC) between 2015 and 2019, in addition to about $ 500 billion in trade.

The Sino-American trade conflict entered a new stage after tit-for-tat tariff hikes, targeting in total some $ 260 billion-worth of bilaterally traded goods, came into force in September. While Trump threated more tariff measures to fix last year’s $ 375 billion trade deficit with the world’s second-biggest economy, the US has steadily been agitating Beijing closer to its shores, challenging China’s sovereignty claims over Taiwan as well as South China and East China Seas, through the ‘freedom of navigation’ principle.

The Tiny Nation Where Puppets Are More Famous Than People https://briefnews.eu/the-tiny-nation-where-puppets-are-more-famous-than-people/ https://briefnews.eu/the-tiny-nation-where-puppets-are-more-famous-than-people/#respond Wed, 26 Sep 2018 13:09:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-tiny-nation-where-puppets-are-more-famous-than-people/ Inside Ljubljana Castle, situated just above the Slovenian capital’s scenic old town, there are a few heads in jars. They hover in murky liquid, attached to spindly outgrowths halfway between spinal cords and centipedes. If you pull a cord, they’ll move.

The heads aren’t some remnant of a medieval torture device — though Ljubljana Castle does include some restored prison cells. Rather, they’re figures from Meat or Revelation, a 2010 puppet show about the moments before death. Today, they’re also an exhibit in Ljubljana’s Museum of Puppetry.

Lutkovni muzej 016

Slovenia, the tiny Central European country that birthed campus darling Slavoj Žižek and future first lady Melania Trump, has cultivated a rich tradition of puppetry for more than a century. Tour guide Aleksander Jovanović admits that Slovenian puppets are less well known than their German or Italian counterparts. But the Museum of Puppetry, which opened in May 2015, may give those other puppets a run for their stuffing.

“In the past year and a half since we opened the museum, we have never had a disappointed visitor,” Jovanović says.

Puppets say everything that needs to be said in a way that doesn’t hurt us.

Master puppeteer Edi Majaron

Slovenian puppetry began in 1910, when Milan Klemenčič, an artist who had studied in Germany and Italy, staged Dead Man in a Red Coat. Klemenčič, who would receive great acclaim for his marionette adaptation of Doctor Faustus, captured an eerie foreboding with his gaunt figures, still visible in the reconstruction that appears in the museum. “The level of craftsmanship, love and dedication behind it are overwhelming,” Jovanović says.

Puppetry survived both world wars — in 1944, the Partisan Puppet Theatre was founded, named after future Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito’s resistance movement — but its position in Slovenia was only solidified in 1948, with the founding of the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre. This year, that institution’s offerings included a show meant to teach children about death, a puppet adaptation of Animal Farm and a revival of Klemenčič’s Faustus. This diverse lineup is indicative of the outsize role puppet shows have played in Slovenian culture, from the family-friendly productions of Jože Pengov (1951’s Speckles the Ball deserves the Disney treatment) to the “creepy heads” (Jovanović’s words) of Meat or Revelation.

Lutkovni muzej 035

“Puppets don’t hate, they are not envious and they are not mean,” master puppeteer Edi Majaron wrote before 2014’s World Puppetry Day. “They say everything that needs to be said in a way that doesn’t hurt us.” Those who think Majaron is putting too much faith in marionettes can try it out themselves: According to Jovanović, the museum is fully interactive. “I’ve seen families with kids come to the museum, and the children had their noses buried in their smartphones,” Jovanović says. “But as soon as they discovered that they can touch and move the puppets, they forgot all about their phones.”

And if Majaron is to be believed, the revelations won’t stop there.

“We don’t realize enough that every day, we are puppets — marionettes,” Majaron wrote in 2014. “As Plato had written, it is Gods who pull the strings of our lives.”

Stroke: Two thirds of nation ignore this step to slash risk of life-threatening condition https://briefnews.eu/stroke-two-thirds-of-nation-ignore-this-step-to-slash-risk-of-life-threatening-condition/ https://briefnews.eu/stroke-two-thirds-of-nation-ignore-this-step-to-slash-risk-of-life-threatening-condition/#respond Tue, 11 Sep 2018 01:03:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stroke-two-thirds-of-nation-ignore-this-step-to-slash-risk-of-life-threatening-condition/

Stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is cut off. This is considered a medical emergency and urgent treatment is essential.

A stroke can cause swallowing difficulties, pain and sensory problems, communication problems, and tiredness and fatigue. In some cases it can even be fatal.

Health experts recommend the best ways of preventing one happening is to eat a healthy diet, take regular exercise, drink alcohol in moderation, and not to smoke.

But another effective way to reduce the risk of a stroke happening is to know your blood pressure numbers. But unfortunately new research has revealed nearly two third of the population is ignoring this simple step.

Knowing your blood pressure numbers can not only help prevent stroke, but also heart attack and heart failure, according to Blood Pressure UK.

In its latest national survey, the charity found 38.6 per cent of people are more concerned abut other ailments (and the subsequent effects on their health) than knowing their blood pressure numbers – putting themselves at an increase risk of debilitating stroke and/or heart attack.

A further 26.7 per cent of respondents consider going out with friends and socialising more of a priority than having their blood pressure taken.

A staggering 63.7 per cent of people do not know their blood pressure numbers – with 16.2 per cent thinking a healthy blood pressure reading is 130/80mmHg which implies pre-high blood pressure, compared to an ideal blood pressure reading of 120/80mmHg.

Of the 33.7 per cent of people who own a blood pressure monitor, 41.7 per cent still go to their GP more than once a year to be tested – with 26.2% believing they will receive a more accurate reading.

And of the 66.3 per cent of people who do not own a blood pressure monitor, well over a quarter (27.8 per cent) say they don’t feel the need to test their blood pressure at all. 16.6 per cent claim they only trust their GP’s to test them.

Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke by damaging and weakening your brain’s blood vessels, causing them to narrow, rupture or leak.

It can also cause blood clots to form in the arteries leading to your brain, blocking blood flow and potentially causing a stroke.

Blood Pressure UK, as part of its Know Your Numbers! campaign, is now calling for all households to acquire a validated blood pressure monitor, with government subsidies for the low incomes and those most at risk.

So what is a normal blood pressure reading?

NHS Choices advises that blood pressure is recorded with two numbers. The systolic pressure (the higher number) is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body.

The diastolic pressure (the lower number) is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels. Both measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg).

Ideal blood pressure is considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg.

Hypertension is considered to be 150/90mmHg or higher, and low blood pressure is considered to be 90/60mmHg or lower.

The health body adds: “A blood pressure reading between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you’re at risk of developing high blood pressure if you don’t take steps to keep your blood pressure under control.”

Stroke symptoms can vary from person to person but the main signs can be remembered using the acronym F.A.S.T. Occasionally a stroke can cause different symptoms, some of which may be mistaken for other, less serious health conditions.

Charles de Gaulle's Victory Began in This Central African Nation https://briefnews.eu/charles-de-gaulles-victory-began-in-this-central-african-nation/ https://briefnews.eu/charles-de-gaulles-victory-began-in-this-central-african-nation/#respond Thu, 16 Aug 2018 08:09:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/charles-de-gaulles-victory-began-in-this-central-african-nation/ It was the moment all of France had waited for. Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace, which Germany had historically eyed as its own, was finally free from the Nazis. The 2nd French Armored Division under Gen. Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque had liberated the city, burying the ghosts of France’s humiliating defeat four years earlier during the blitzkrieg. And the soldier who climbed to the top of the Strasbourg cathedral to hoist the French flag on Nov. 23, 1944, was from a regiment raised 4,000 miles away: the Régiment de marche du Tchad, or the Marching Regiment of Chad.

Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free France government in exile, organized the liberation of his nation from headquarters in London. When France’s future president delivered his famous June 18, 1940, speech on the BBC, urging French people to continue the war against Germany even though France itself was preparing to surrender, he had no territory under his control. That would change two months later, when the colony of Chad and its Black administrator, the French Guiana–born Félix Éboué, gave de Gaulle his first launch pad for striking back at the Axis.

The heart of Free France was not located in London … but rather in Free French Africa.

Eric T. Jennings, historian

On Aug. 26, the broad-shouldered Éboué announced in Fort-Lamy — the capital now known as N’djamena — that Chad was breaking with Axis-backed Vichy France and lining up behind de Gaulle. The colony’s support contributed “credibility, legitimacy, manpower and revenue to de Gaulle’s movement in its infancy, when it was most fragile,” according to University of Toronto historian Eric T. Jennings. Chad allowed de Gaulle to claim he was the legitimate leader of a French fighting force based on French soil, adds John Langdon, professor of world history at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York. Chadian forces went on to help the Allies win key victories in Libya and elsewhere in North Africa and then drive back Axis forces in France and Germany.

“Éboué’s proclamation of Chad’s loyalty to de Gaulle on Aug. 26 was a godsend for the French general,” says Langdon. “The proclamation at Fort-Lamy was the beginning of the practical implementation of the rhetorical call to arms that de Gaulle had issued on June 18.”

Until then, Éboué had followed the standard French colonial script as an administrator in Cameroon, Martinique, Mali, Guadeloupe and Chad. His act of resistance against the Vichy regime turned him into a French icon. In 1949, five years after his death, Éboué became the first Black man to be interred at the Panthéon in Paris alongside France’s greatest heroes.

Éboué’s decision was “courageous,” says Langdon. But the administrator had his reasons. He was a disciple of the great French socialist Jean Jaurès and, as a Black man, found Nazi ideology and the Vichy’s right-wing politics repulsive.

There were pragmatic reasons as well, say historians. Chad had a significant French population worried that Italian-occupied Libya would invade the colony if it didn’t support de Gaulle. Most of landlocked Chad’s trade passed through Nigeria, a British colony, so supporting the Allies made sense. But Éboué also astutely concluded that Adolf Hitler was likely to overreach, and Nazi Germany would lose. “To Éboué, a highly talented soccer player in his youth, it made no sense to back what would probably be the losing side,” says Langdon.

Instead, his decision became an example that Gaullist forces used to convince other French African colonies to similarly switch allegiances. By October 1940, French Equatorial Africa — French Cameroon, French Congo, French Gabon, Chad and Ubangi-Shari (present-day Central African Republic) — was all under the control of Free France, and de Gaulle appointed Éboué governor of the entire federation.

“Between August 1940 and the summer of 1943, the heart of Free France was not located in London, as standard accounts would have us believe, but rather in Free French Africa,” writes Jennings in his book Free French Africa in World War II: The African Resistance.

And that heart could fight. It was only after the Allies arrived in French West Africa in November 1942 that de Gaulle could build a navy. And Chad’s location in north-central Africa made it an ideal military base for launching troops into enemy Libya.

Founded in 1940, with help from Éboué, as the Senegalese Rifle Regiment of Chad, the Marching Regiment of Chad consisted of Chadian and French soldiers. It got its latter name in July 1943. Between December 1940 and March 1941, these men — supported by British troops — fought under Leclerc in the Battle of Kufra in southwestern Libya, eventually taking control of the Italian outpost. From that crucial foothold, the Allies were able to push the Axis powers out of Libya and all of North Africa by May 1943.

Kufra was also where the seeds of the battle that would later play out in Strasbourg were sown. On March 2, 1941, the day after the Italian garrison surrendered, Leclerc and his troops took what has come to be known as the Oath of Kufra, pledging to fight until “our flag flies over the cathedral of Strasbourg.”

The Chad regiment went farther than that. After landing in Normandy, it fought its way to Strasbourg, fulfilled its oath and kept going with Allied forces all the way to Berghof, capturing Hitler’s retreat in the Bavarian Alps in mid-1945. Éboué didn’t live to see it — a heart attack had felled him in May 1944. But his bet in picking de Gaulle over Vichy France paid off.
