The Macedonian population largely boycotted the referendum, despite the best efforts of its US-backed government, which tried to entice voters by phrasing the question as innocuously as possible: “Are you in favor of membership in the European Union and NATO by accepting the deal between the Republic of Macedonia and Republic of Greece?” Only 36.9 percent of eligible voters participated, rendering the referendum invalid.

Opposition MPs facing terrorism charges were reportedly offered amnesty if they voted with the ruling party to amend the Constitution, and the release of one of those MPs on bail lent weight to suspicions their votes were being bought.

A US diplomat even stepped in to remind opposition leader Hristijan Mickoski he knew better what was good for the Macedonian people, writing to say how “disappointed” he was in the party’s failure to bring its positions into alignment with those of the US and NATO. Wess Mitchell, US assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, lectured the VMRO-DPMNE leader that Macedonians “strongly support NATO and EU accession, and have done so since independence” and that only a leader lacking in “courageous leadership and maturity” would stand in the way of joining such august political bodies.

Mitchell ended his letter on an even more patronizing note, calling the US “a true friend and supporter” of Macedonia and promising to “secure a brighter future” – if only Mickoski would set aside his country’s “partisan” interests to advance those of the US and NATO.

Many opposition MPs also chose to boycott the parliamentary vote. The ruling coalition was barely able to secure the required majority of 80 out of 120 votes in order to ram the measure through.

Macedonia’s ruling party, led by Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, made a deal with Greece in June to change the country’s name to North Macedonia in return for smoothing the process of integrating the Balkan nation into the EU and NATO.

Not all in Greece are satisfied with the compromise by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who barely survived a no-confidence vote over his handling of the matter. The country’s right-wing Defense Minister Panos Kammenos has threatened to quit the governing coalition if the matter goes to a Greek vote.

Macedonia’s conflict with Greece stems from a province in the country that shares its name. Macedonia – the Greek province, at least – is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Alexander the Great, whose empire reached from Greece to India. Modern Greece accuses Macedonia of cultural appropriation and territorial aggression through its use of the name, which has been a sore point since the country became independent in 1991.

Namibia Airport narrowly avoided a serious accident when a train of four luggage trolleys was sent flying at high speed towards a stationary plane.

A viral video of the dramatic incident shows airport workers at Hosea Kutako International Airport desperately trying to run after the trolleys and stop them crashing into the aircraft.

The train’s material covers can be seen flapping in the strong winds as the official attempts to push against the first trolley.

But the strength of the high winds proves too strong and the trolleys continue to hurtle down the runway, despite the worker’s brave attempts.

Three other airport workers then madly dash towards their colleague to help as the train nears the stationary plane.

A car also zooms forwards, apparently with the aim of obstructing the path of the runaway trolleys.

Meanwhile, the plane’s pilots appear to realise the impending danger and begin to taxi away.

However, the driver of the car appears to take no action during all of this and the trolleys simply whip past as the vehicle comes to a halt.

The airport workers continue to run after the train but the trolleys appear to come to a stop.

The final scene of the drama is unfortunately not captured in the video.

Local paper The Namibian reported: “Strong winds at the Hosea Kutako International Airport triggered a spectacle in which four officials chased after a train of four runaway luggage trolleys which were heading towards a stationary plane at full speed.”

A Namibian Airports Company (NAC) spokesperson, Dan Kamati, confirmed the incident occurred on Sunday.

“No injuries or damage to persons or property was reported and investigations continue,” he told the daily newspaper.

According to a Facebook post of the video by The Namibian, authorities “are trying to establish whether the Air Namibia plane was parked, or planning to take off, and whether the plane had just landed, or if it had moved to avoid a collision with the trolleys.”

Kamati did not reveal what had caused the trolleys to be let loose but said it would be investigated.

Last week a shocking event happened in south India when an Air India plane reportedly smashed into a wall during a take-off.

The plane had 130 passengers and six crew members on board. Despite the obvious hit, the flight continued across the Indian Ocean and halfway to Dubai.

However, after two hours the aircraft was ordered to return back to Mumbai, India by ground control.

A “catastrophe” could have occurred if the flight had continued any longer, Hindustan Times reported.

“More parts of the aircraft could have come off had it continued to cruise for a bit longer, endangering the lives of passengers,” VK Kukar, a former Air India Pilot, told the Indian newspaper.

Brazilian right-wing candidate Jair Bolsonaro will head to the second round of the country’s election, facing leftist candidate Fernando Haddad on October 28, after narrowly failing to secure fifty percent of first round votes.

Bolsonaro is leading the polls in the first round of the presidential election, with 47 percent of the vote and 92.5 percent of the votes counted. The Congressman will head toward a second-round runoff against Haddad, the former Mayor of São Paulo, who so far has gained 27.9 percent of the popular support.

The 63-year-old conservative candidate, who had advocated a brutal crackdown on crime and graft ahead of the election, is well ahead of his Workers Party rival, whose former leader President Luiz Inacio Lula de Silva was barred from running due to his 12-year jail sentence on corruption charges.

The 2018 election is seen as the most polarized vote in the country since the end of military rule in 1985. Bolsonaro, who appears to favor dictatorship, has an active support from a group of retired generals who stand opposed to the 2003-2016 rule of the Workers Party. The Congressman publicly advocates military intervention as a way to fight corruption.

Google Maps Street View captured a man and his wife doing work outside of their house.

The woman was peering into a bush with a gardening tool by her foot, as she appeared to be preparing or fixing the foliage and fence.

The man was on a ladder looking over the top of his caravan on the quiet residential street.

Yet the scene terrified many online users due to dangerous actions of the man.

Clad in a white jumper and blue jeans, he was fixing something on the roof.

To get onto the top of the vehicle, he used a stepladder to climb up the side.

Without care for his safety, he climbed all the way to the top of the ladder.

He used the very top of the ladder, which is not a step but a handle, to lean on.

The precarious position could have easily lead to a fall.

The images do not show what happened next to the man but hopefully he managed to keep his balance on top of the caravan.

Most ladders have warning signs on them advising anyone not to use the top step, let along the top handle.

If he had fallen from the top of the caravan, it could have resulted in broken bones or something more serious.

Instead, people should always use the lower steps and have someone holding it as well.

Many men have been captured in awkward and often silly accidents on Google Maps.

A group of young people were walking with shoe boxes in their hand when one of them fell over, dropping them everywhere.

His friends looked on as he struggled to pick them up after they crashed to the ground.

Another man was spotted causing an accident while rollerblading in the US.

The young boy was rollerblading with two of his dogs on a lead behind him.

Without realising, one had fallen over and was being dragged along the pavement.

50 Cent and 6ix9ine’s music video shoot almost turned deadly on Tuesday night as they narrowly escaped being hit by gunfire in the Brooklyn area of New York.

The two rappers were filming in the Greenpoint neighbourhood when a gunman fired at least 11 shots just a block away from them on 18 Noble Street, police said. No injuries were reported.

Police are investigating whether the gunman was firing in the direction of the video set. Witnesses say someone in a white Porsche with a New Jersey license plate fired the shots, TMZ reports.

Shell casings suggest the shooter used a 9mm semi-automatic weapon.

A viral video has captured a traffic warden on a busy road directing traffic.

Filmed on his vehicle dash cam, he uses lights to direct traffic around his car as it appears to be parked in the middle lane.

Most of the cars manage to avoid him, as the lane is empty.

He stops and looks into the distance only to run at full speed out of shot.

What happens next could have had a fateful outcome for the poor man.

As he runs away, a lorry can be seen speeding towards the car.

They appear to have ignored the cones and flashing lights and hurtle towards the man.

At the last minute, the driver notices and sharply turns to the left.

The vehicle somehow comes to a top, missing both the man and the car.

No-one appears to have been hurt, thankfully.

The Imgur video has had over 450,000 views with many online users shocked at the video.

One noticed his hilarious actions whilst running: “Better take off my hat so I can run faster.”

Others praised the lorry drivers actions.

Another remarked: “Say what you will, that’s an impressive stop.”

Of course, one noted: “I think paying attention to the road and seeing the cop more than 20 metres out would probably be more impressive.”

Another lorry had a different kind of accident when driving with a full load.

Captured in the US, the vehicle is driving towards a low bridge on a highway.

What they haven’t realised is that the trailer on the back is still up.

As they go under the bridge, the roof is dramatically ripped off and the contents spill out over the road.

Whilst no-one was injured, an investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the incident.

The black car can be seen on a busy highway in Texas when he uses the hard shoulder to overtake.

He successfully gets around the cars that are driving slowly in the lanes.

The Associated Press called the primary for Lipinski with 97% of precincts reporting early Wednesday morning.

The competitive contest between Lipinski and Marie Newman, a first-time candidate who won 49.1% of the primary voters, became a flashpoint for simmering tensions between the national Democratic Party’s centrist and liberal wings, drawing months of national attention.
