Republican Sen. Mike Lee holds a narrow lead over independent candidate Evan McMullin in the Utah Senate race, in what is shaping up to be one of the most competitive statewide races in recent memory in the longtime GOP stronghold.
In the latest Deseret News/Hinckley Institute of Politics poll — among registered voters — Lee earned the support of 36% of respondents, while 34% backed McMullin and 13% opted for another candidate. Per the polling results, 16% of respondents also indicated that they were undecided.
Among likely voters, the race remains largely unchanged, with Lee leading McMullin 37% to 34%, with 16% of respondents stating that they were undecided.
The poll surveyed 815 registered voters from Sept. 3 through Sept. 21 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.43 percentage points.
Jason Perry, the director of the Hinckley Institute of Politics at the University of Utah, told Deseret News that the polling indicated that a swath of moderates — who are still not sold on giving Lee a third term in Washington, DC — are the key to the incumbent winning in November and are also critical to McMullin if he is to upset the Republican lawmaker.
"Mike Lee continues to be in the driver's seat, but the most interesting aspect of this poll is who the undecided voters are — moderates and liberals," Perry told the publication. "Mike Lee needs some of the moderates and Evan McMullin needs all the moderates and liberals he can convince, but those groups are in a quandary."
Utah Democrats in April threw their support behind McMullin in the November contest, in turn passing over a nominee from their own party. In endorsing McMullin, Democrats lined up behind a former CIA officer who unsuccessfully sought the presidency in 2016, but performed strongly in the Beehive State — winning 22% of the statewide vote and holding Donald Trump below 50% of the vote in one of the most Republican states in the country.
While Lee overwhelmingly votes in line with most Republican senators, McMullin told NBC News in July that he wouldn't caucus with either major party should he be elected to office this fall.
And while Republican candidates generally enjoy a healthy financial advantage in Utah, McMullin has been able to remain competitive with the incumbent.
According to OpenSecrets, Lee has raised $ 7.9 million and had nearly $ 2.5 million in cash on hand, while McMullin has taken in over $ 3.2 million and had nearly $ 1.3 million in cash on hand.
In the last Deseret News/Hinckley poll — which was conducted in July — Lee held a 41%-36% lead over McMullin.
The latest results show some erosion in support for the senator, as there has since been an increase in the number of voters who are undecided.

Moments of sheer terror are seen on video footage from inside the Kerch college as the 18-year-old shooter moved from room to room, ruthlessly slaughtering people. A group of students is seen fleeing the school, amid dead bodies.
The footage, obtained by several Telegram channels, including Mash, shows a group of female students and their teacher desperately looking for a way out of the building, while all hell is breaking loose around them.
There are sounds of shots being fired in the vicinity and screams of horror as the witness begins to film. “They’re shooting from an automatic weapon,” somebody shouts.

The shaky camera then films bodies lying in the staircases as horrified students watch. They, however, manage to avoid an encounter with the gunman and flee to safety.
Not everybody was so lucky in Wednesday’s shooting at the Kerch polytechnic college in Russia’s Crimea, which saw 18 people killed and almost 50 injured. The majority of the victims were students, aged between 15 and early 20s.
Kerch carnage: What we know so far about attack on Crimean college
The perpetrator was identified as 18-year-old Vladislav Roslyakov, who was also a student at the college. He detonated an improvised explosive device in the building and went on a shooting rampage with a rifle before committing suicide. A notable resemblance between his apparent plot and the 1999 Columbine High School massacre has already been noted in the media.

Early hominins’ four smaller toes had adapted to bipedal walking by around 4.4 million years ago, but the big toe remained better-suited to grasping and climbing for a few million more years, until some time early in the evolution of our genus, Homo. That’s the conclusion of a new study by Stony Brook University anthropologist Peter Fernandez and his colleagues, who studied the size and shape of the metatarsals (the bones of the mid-foot) in modern humans, fossil hominins, and an assortment of monkeys and apes.
Primate feet evolved mostly to grasp while climbing, which is why chimpanzees have more flexible feet than humans and why their big toes are opposable, like our thumbs. Humans—and our hominin predecessors—are the weird exceptions in the primate family tree, with the basic architecture of our feet adapted to bear weight while walking.
Some of those adaptations, like the one Fernandez and his colleagues studied, look pretty subtle to anyone who is not a specialist in primate foot anatomy. Their study focused on how much the head of the metatarsal protrudes toward the top of the foot, sticking out above the shaft of the bone like a dome, at the joint with the phalanx (one of the bones that makes up the toes) at the base of the toe.

Trump-backed Republican Sen. Troy Balderson held a narrow lead over his Democratic challenger, Danny O’Connor in Tuesday night’s special election in Ohio’s 12th congressional district. With 100% of precincts reporting, Balderson led the race by nearly 1,800 ballots, in a deep-red district that Donald Trump won by 11 points in the 2016 presidential election.
Balderson is expected to take the House seat abandoned by Republican Rep. Pat Tiberi, who announced his resignation in October, midway through his term.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

“The inline-six had some disadvantages with new architecture of our next generation of cars back then,” says Dr Ralph Weller, managing developer of six-cylinder gasoline engines at Mercedes-Benz. “It also had some disadvantages with the new front-end crash standards because of the length of its block.”
But the faithful Daimler engineers never renounced it entirely, and now it has returned, with a number of intriguing advantages, all of which we had the opportunity to experience recently while ensconced in two versions of the third-generation CLS four-door coupe — the CLS 450 (362 hp/369 lb-ft) and AMG CLS 53 (429 hp/384 lb-ft) — while in Barcelona.
There are many current benefits to the inline-six configuration — especially for the manufacturer. Back in the day when displacement ruled the world, V6 motors could be built off of the same, but shrunken, block as V8s. Now that our automotive multi-verse is organized around smaller motors and forced induction, it makes more sense to have an inline motor where the six-pot version can just be a further development of the inline-four. Do the math: Benz’s forthcoming new 2.0-liter inline-four linearly extrapolates to this 3.0-liter inline-six. Welcome to contemporary economies of scale.
“We build one engine as a family,” says Weller. “It must be flexible on the production line, and must meet the same hard mounting points in every car. This new block can do that.”
Additionally, because it’s a straight-six engine, and not a V, there is a nice long “cool” intake (non-exhaust) side to the motor on which many of these advanced components can be safely housed, obviating the need for pricey and complex systems to stabilize their temperature or prolong their lifespan. Compare that to the complexity involved in keeping the bits of a “hot-vee” turbocharged V8, like the company’s biturbo 4.0-liter V8, cool and happy. More savings for Benz.
Intriguingly, there are benefits to the consumer as well. Much has been made of the unique mechanical and technological advances integrated in this motor, and they’re quite impressive. It is the first Mercedes with a 48-volt electrical system, its intense (shocking?) power generated by what Mercedes calls the “Integrated Starter Generator,” sandwiched between the motor and the transmission.

This potent apparatus is able to power a range of features far more efficiently than other lower-voltage motors, because it can do so without sapping much output from the engine. It can provide non-belt-driven capacity for accessory systems like the air conditioning and defroster. It can make the irritating stop/start system less irritating and even allowing it to operate seamlessly at highway speeds. It can even — in the AMG model — whirl up an electric supercharger that supplements the twin-scroll turbo while it’s spooling up.
Additionally, the straight-six makes nearly as much power as the brand’s twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 in that motor’s basic configuration, but uses 20 percent less fuel and emits 20 percent less carbon dioxide. But perhaps the biggest consumer benefit is the innate smoothness and balance.
“An inline-six has no free movements. The mechanism of the crankshaft is smoother, and so it has far less vibration than a vee engine,” says Weller. “And we’ve even been able to reduce the idle speed from 610 rpm to 520.”
All of this translates into an extremely quiet and serene driving experience, even eerily so when the so-called Sailing Mode sets in, shutting off the engine at freeway speeds under zero load situations — when you let off the gas pedal, or are drifting downhill — and then restarting it again without shudder.
“It is practically a vibration-free car,” says Weller.
The exhaust note, even in the loudest Sport+ mode is melodic and technical. There’s just a bit of expectoration at upshift, but it’s not exactly exciting and it disappears entirely in Sailing Mode. At one point while another driver was at the wheel, we wondered if Mercedes is intentionally removing engine life and note in order to prepare us for our autonomous/electric future. But then we relaxed into the massaging seat and just enjoyed the view of the Montserrat range, and the sea.

A viral video has revealed the terrifyingly narrow escape a driver had from a speeding car.
The video was filmed by the dash cam of Sarah Carter, 42, on January 4 in Lincoln.
It shows a vehicle ahead of her performing an illegal manoeuvre by turning right at a left-only junction ahead of her.
She narrowly misses by the car as it turns just inches from her bonnet.
It isn’t quite sure what the bad driver was hoping to do by speeding the wrong way down the road.
The car drives slowly down the wrong way for a few moments so it may have been a mistake after not realising it was a one-way street.
Thankfully Carter’s quick reactions meant she was able to brake and avoid a collision.
She told Lincolnshire Live: “I rolled my eyes and called her a few choice words. It didn’t surprise me – I am no longer surprised by the standard of driving in Lincoln.
“People in Lincoln just don’t seem to be able to understand how the roads work.
“I drive between 45,000 and 55,000 just in my job alone, and every day I witness dangerous driving.
“I love driving but other people are ruining it.”
Another bad driver on the road was caught by dash cam footage that nearly caused a collision.
A driver can be seen pulling out onto the main road without checking.
A bike and a lorry are both forced to suddenly stop, nearly causing a double collision.
They were both uninjured with the video later showing them getting out after the incident.
The bad driver speeds off without pausing to see if they are both okay.
Phillips shot to sporting prominence last decade when she became the 21st Australian to be drafted to a WNBA club, before going on to represent the Australian Opals at both the Olympic Games and World Championships.
But Phillips, the daughter of former Port Adelaide and Collingwood footballer Greg Phillips, thrived in the inaugural AFLW season in 2017, winning the league’s best and fairest award and leading the Adelaide Crows to a premiership thanks to a best-on-ground performance.
Phillips in May last year announced her retirement from the WNBA after winning two championships across nine seasons, but left the door ajar to represent the Opals in the future.
But the 32-year-old on Tuesday confirmed she’d retired from all forms of basketball to focus on her AFLW commitments.
“You know those stories where an athlete announces their retirement and rides off into the sunset, happy and content with how it all finished? This isn’t one of them,” Phillips wrote for Players Voice.
“It’s time for me to close the door on my career as a basketball player. It has been the most incredible journey — but this wasn’t the ending I’d hoped for.”
Phillips’ last basketball game for Australia was the quarter-final loss to Serbia at the Rio Olympics — a loss that left her feeling “ashamed, humiliated and even lost”.
But she revealed the birth of her two children months later, as well as her stunning 2017 AFLW campaign, “saved me in a way”.
Phillips said she would’ve loved to have juggled her AFLW commitments with representing the Opals at April’s Commonwealth Games, but didn’t want to compromised — and miss — Crows training sessions in order to play international basketball again.
And after Opals coach Sandy Brondello recently reiterated to Phillips that she couldn’t be considered for selection if she didn’t sacrifice her AFLW obligations, the guard’s mind was made up.
“Going to the Commonwealth Games would have been great. But if I’m honest with myself, it was probably a selfish motivation because I simply wanted to finish on a better note than the Olympics,” Phillips wrote.
“At the end of this journey, I guess it just wasn’t meant to be and sometimes we don’t get to decide how to write that final chapter. But I absolutely feel like I’ve given basketball everything and I know in my heart it’s time.”
Phillips said she would still be involved with basketball and would honour her first full-time coaching role at the Dallas Wings as assistant coach to Fred Williams.
Both Williams and Phillips are keen to recruit superstar centre Liz Cambage to the Wings for the upcoming WNBA season after Cambage’s dominant 2017/18 WNBL campaign with the Melbourne Boomers.
