The mayor of Naples, Luigi de Magistris, has been particularly outraged after learning that the USS John Warner, an American Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarine, moored at the port on March 20, about three weeks before the US-led missile strikes on Syria, local media reported.

“I would like to reiterate that Resolution 609 that was approved on September 23, 2015, on my behalf, has declared the port of Naples a nuclear-free area,” de Magistris wrote to Rear Admiral Arturo Faraone, commander of Naples port authority, as cited by La Repubblica newspaper.

The mayor said his decree prohibited docking of any nuclear-powered vessels or warships carrying nuclear weapons in “the city of peace.” He said Naples authorities are “respectful of everyone’s fundamental rights” and are “dedicated to disarmament and international cooperation.” Nevertheless, Rear Admiral Faraone replied that “the arrival and/or transit of foreign naval units in national territorial waters” does not fall within his office’s responsibility.

The USS John Warren has been named by the Pentagon as the one that fired a number of Tomahawk cruise missiles on Syrian targets last Saturday. The vessel has been the first Virginia-class submarine to fire the missiles on enemy targets, the US Naval Institute (USNI) said, also uploading what appears to be footage of the John Warner launching the missiles from a submerged position.

Earlier, the John Warner took part in NATO-led Dynamic Manta 2018 anti-submarine exercise that ran through the first half of March off Italy’s shores, La Reppublica newspaper reported. The naval wargames involved submarines and surface ships from Canada, Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, and the US, according to NATO Allied Maritime Command.

Apparently, the USS ‘John Warner’ was not the only Western submarine to be present off Syrian shores prior to Saturday’s missile attacks. A British Astute-class sub, armed with cruise missiles, was also traversing these waters during the build-up to the strikes, The Times reported.

The UK boat was reportedly locked in a “cat-and-mouse” pursuit by Russian Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines and frigates, the newspaper wrote, citing military sources. The Russians were said to be shadowing the British vessel as it maneuvered “to put its Tomahawk cruise missiles within range of Syrian military targets.”

Though it reportedly spent several days trying to evade detection during “a tense and dangerous contest,” the Royal Navy submarine was not able to get any closer to Syria’s coast. “Ultimately the question did not arise: the British sub did not take part in the strikes,” The Times said.

‘We fear for our families’: Naples residents film confrontation between migrants & soldiers (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/we-fear-for-our-families-naples-residents-film-confrontation-between-migrants-soldiers-video/ https://briefnews.eu/we-fear-for-our-families-naples-residents-film-confrontation-between-migrants-soldiers-video/#respond Mon, 07 Aug 2017 23:47:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-fear-for-our-families-naples-residents-film-confrontation-between-migrants-soldiers-video/ A video showing a confrontation between Italian soldiers and immigrants on the streets of Naples has gone viral. In the clip, the troops appear to arrest a man before being confronted by others, who attempt to wrest the detained man free.

The grainy video was posted to the Comitato Quartiere Vasto (the Vasto District Committee) group on Facebook, representing residents living in the Vasto area of central Naples near the Piazza Garibaldi.

The video shows soldiers arresting a man, who looks to be of African descent and is lying on the ground. Others are seen approaching the group and attempting to pull the detained man away. Eventually, two other black men succeed, but the patrol catches up to them and encircle the original suspect, while more onlookers arrive. Somebody is heard shouting, “Do not beat him!”

It is not clear what the man was being arrested for, nor whether he was being abused by the soldiers in any way. Another video taken at the same scene shows no sign of violence towards the soldiers.

The incident has provoked a sharp reaction from local residents.

“Abandoned and betrayed!” wrote Lello Cretella, the user who posted the video. “Episodes like these happen every day in our neighborhood and everyone pretends not to see!”

“We feel alone and abandoned… we fear for us and our families!”

Since being uploaded on Sunday, the video has been shared by hundreds of users, including right-wing politician Matteo Salvini.

“Men in our army are surrounded and attacked by dozens of immigrants who wanted to prevent the arrest of one of them,” he wrote. “We are now in urban warfare.”

Matteo’s party, the Northern League, once advocated separatism from southern Italy, including Naples, which it saw as backward, but is now trying to court southern voters on an anti-immigration platform.

“The tension is very high every day,” said Naples councilor Alessandro Gallo, commenting on the video. “However, something very serious is happening with the army being surrounded. It is necessary to intervene.”

The soldiers in the video had been patrolling the streets as a part of Operation Safe Roads, launched in 2008, which deployed thousands of troops on the streets of 38 Italian cities to help safeguard sensitive targets and patrol against petty crime. The same year extra troops were also deployed to the Naples and Campania regions to help quell gang violence by the Camorra, the local mafia. In September 2008, race riots broke out in a nearby town, Castel Volturno, after Camorra killers shot dead six West Africans and one local arcade owner at random in an attempt to intimidate immigrant drug gangs.

Lying across the Mediterranean from North Africa, Italy is a key point of entry for refugees and asylum seekers to Europe, who mainly leave the continent through Libya. The UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates there are between 700,000 and one million people currently in Libya awaiting their chance to get into Europe. As of June, the United Nations’ Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said that over 2,000 people have died this year trying to make the dangerous crossing.

AMD sets June launch for Zen-based Naples server chips https://briefnews.eu/amd-sets-june-launch-for-zen-based-naples-server-chips/ https://briefnews.eu/amd-sets-june-launch-for-zen-based-naples-server-chips/#respond Wed, 17 May 2017 07:24:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amd-sets-june-launch-for-zen-based-naples-server-chips/

Advanced Micro Devices announced a timetable for its Zen-based Naples server chips that are aimed at disrupting Intel’s hold on the data center. The new chips will formally launch under the brand name Epyc in June.

AMD’s Zen architecture is the company’s most competitive design for a family of new processors in a decade. It launched its Ryzen desktop computer chips in March, saying that the chips could process 52 percent faster per clock cycle than the previous generation. That was a big advance that AMD says carries over to Naples.

Naples is a two-socket server chip aimed at Intel’s flagship chip, the Broadwell-EP-based Xeon E5 V4. Naples has 32 cores and is capable of processing 64 simultaneous threads at the same time. It supports up to two terabytes of RAM, while Broadwell chips have 22 cores, 44 threads, and 1.5 TB of RAM.

AMD previously said it was shipping the Naples chips in the second quarter, and now it has narrowed that window to a matter of weeks.

AMD is emphasizing its high core count, big memory bandwidth, and support for high-speed input/output channels in a single chip. Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, said during the company’s financial analyst day that Epyc promises to revolutionize the dual-socket server market while simultaneously reshaping expectations for single-socket servers.

The first Epyc-based servers will launch in June with widespread support from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and channel partners, AMD said.

“With the new Epyc processor, AMD takes the next step on our journey in high-performance computing,” said Forrest Norrod, senior vice president and general manager of enterprise, embedded, and semi-custom products at AMD. “AMD Epyc processors will set a new standard for two-socket performance and scalability. As we demonstrated today, we see further opportunity with the industry’s first no-compromise one-socket solutions. We believe that this new product line-up has the potential to reshape significant portions of the data center market with its unique combination of performance, design flexibility, and disruptive total cost of ownership (TCO).”

AMD showed a single Epyc processor exceeding the performance of a competitive mid-range, two-socket / two-processor platform in a head-to-head comparison. AMD said that Epyc has 45 percent more cores, 60 percent more input-output capacity, and 122 percent more memory bandwidth than its nearest rival.

“Dropbox is currently evaluating AMD Epyc CPUs in-house, and we are impressed with the initial performance we see across workloads in single-socket configurations,” said Akhil Gupta, vice president of infrastructure at Dropbox, in a statement. “The combination of core performance, memory bandwidth, and I/O support make Epyc a unique offering. We look forward to continuing to evaluate Epyc as an option for our infrastructure.”

“Today’s single-socket server offerings push buyers toward purchasing a more expensive two-socket server just to get the memory bandwidth and I/O they need to support the compute performance of the cores,” said Matthew Eastwood, senior vice president at IDC, in a statement. “There are no fully featured, high-performance server processors available today in a single-socket configuration. Epyc changes that dynamic by offering a single-processor solution that delivers the right-sized number of high-performance cores, memory, and I/O for today’s workloads.”

This Week In Trailers: Risk, Whose Streets?, The Recall, Naples ’44 https://briefnews.eu/this-week-in-trailers-risk-whose-streets-the-recall-naples-44/ https://briefnews.eu/this-week-in-trailers-risk-whose-streets-the-recall-naples-44/#respond Sat, 06 May 2017 16:17:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-week-in-trailers-risk-whose-streets-the-recall-naples-44/ Green Band Trailer

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week we amble through the fog of war, wonder how many months of rent Wesley Snipes was able to get out of his new movie, wonder aloud whether Julian Assange is just a silver haired twat muffin, and remember Mike Brown as the spark for a revolution.

Risk Trailer

Sure, I’ll listen.

When, in 2015, Laura Poitras received her Academy Award for her work on Citizenfour, the documentary about Edward Snowden, it seemed all but certain that she would turn her attention to Julian Assange. The result is what we see here and I’m wildly interested in what Poitras has put together not just from a documentary standpoint but from the hint that this story is more than an objective portrait of a man who many are looking at with a curious eye with regard to motives, it’s a personal account of how she has come under scrutiny by the government for the stories she is telling. The journalist has become part of the story so it’s through this lens that this looks like one engaging portrait.

Naples ’44 Trailer

Calm.

I don’t know what I took away from director Francesco Patierno’s movie about a man looking at the ruins left by the machinations of World War II to one small town. It’s part memoir, part documentary, part reflection on what savagery we’re capable of at the same time as being capable of so much humanity. None of that narrative is found in this trailer and it’s a bold choice to go in the direction it does because a viewer has to work hard at piecing together what historical footage mixed with present day film all means in its totality. Even I’m unsure of what this all means but knowing just the loose skeleton of what’s here and that Benedict Cumberbatch is helping narrate it all, it could be the perfect quite antidote for a bustling summer movie season.

Whose Streets? Trailer

Get sick and tired.

These are the kinds of stories that need to be told again and again, relentlessly, until something positive can come from it. Directors Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis are bringing the real heat on what the death of Mike Brown did to a community. To understand what the Black Lives Matter movement is to many this could be the documentary that helps serve as a primer. The footage here is raw, the emotions are high, and the overall tenor of the trailer is not one of a sugarcoated narrative but a stark look into what triggered so much emotion and anger. I can’t possibly understand the depths of the suffering but I’m on the bus to try and understand what I can.

The Recall Trailer

Dafuq?

I’m of two minds on this. One, many of us had jobs, or have jobs, we’re not proud of. We’re proud people, sure, and maybe we’re doing something just to make ends meet and provide for our families so there’s some honor in that and I get it. Two, this looks like an absolute cinematic abomination. Director Mauro Borelli has an eye for what he wants and he appears to want to have Wesley Snipes star in a movie that would most likely be chosen last in a Redbox that only has this or The Princess Diaries 2. And, even then, it’s a Rochambeau to decide the winner.
