U.S. Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC) talks to reporters after a vote to hold longtime Donald Trump ally Steve Bannon in contempt of Congress at the U.S. Capitol in Washington

  • Rep. Nancy Mace says there's "a lot of pressure" on Republicans to impeach President Biden.
  • On NBC's Meet The Press, Mace said impeachment is being considered by some in the GOP.
  • She told host Chuck Todd that if the party chooses to hold a vote, she believes it will be divisive.

Rep. Nancy Mace says there's pressure on Republicans to vote to impeach President Biden if the party wins the midterms and gains control of the House.

Mace was on NBC's Meet The Press on Sunday, speaking with host Chuck Todd who asked: "Do you expect an impeachment vote against President Biden if Republicans take over the House?"

The South Carolina congresswoman answered, "there's a lot of pressure on Republicans to have that vote, to put that legislation forward. I think that is something that some folks are considering."

To which Todd responded, simply: "Wow."

On Wednesday, Rep. Adam Kinzinger said a GOP-majority Congress might try to impeach the president every week. Kinzinger was referring to Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has made impeaching Biden part of her official platform.

Last year, several Republicans filed impeachment articles criticizing Biden's withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan, his immigration policies, and his administration's eviction moratorium.

When asked by Todd how she would vote if impeachment was on the floor, Mace said she would look at the evidence and vote constitutionally.

"I will not vote for impeachment of any president if I feel that due process has been stripped away for anyone," she told Todd.

Mace said if the party chooses to hold this vote, she believes it will be divisive. "Which is why I pushed back on it personally when I hear folks saying they're going to file articles of impeachment in the House," she said.

While Mace voted against impeaching former President Donald Trump, she was critical of his role on January 6, telling CNN that Trump's "entire legacy was wiped out" in the aftermath of the Capitol riots.

Before January 6, Mace was a supporter of Trump's and even worked for his campaign in 2016.

During the interview with NBC, Todd asked the congresswoman if she would back Trump's presidential bid in 2024.

"I'm going to support whomever Republicans nominate in '24," she said.

Representatives for Mace did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Horseshoe Bay’s motley crew of amateur sleuths resumed the most important mystery of their lives on Wednesday: How does one stop oneself from being murdered by a vengeful sea spirit? (We said it was important, not relatable.)

Nancy Drew‘s second season premiere picked up right where the CW drama’s truncated freshman finale left off, with Nancy & Co. scrambling to outsmart the Aglaeca, when Detective Tamura arrived with troubling news. A young woman named Amanda Bobbsey was hit by a car in the woods — sorry, make that haunted woods — and the last thing she said before losing consciousness was Nancy’s name. Not good.

Long story short, Amanda and her twin brother Gil (aka the Bobbsey Twins!) were looking for Nancy after seeing a tweet about the Aglaeca from the Drew Crew’s official Twitter account. (Bess had the bright idea to crowdsource their supernatural crisis, bless her heart.) As we would come to learn, the twins allegedly possessed a mirror capable of defeating the troublesome spirit, so the Crew had no choice but to track down Amanda’s missing twin. In a haunted forest. What could possibly go right?

The group’s search brought them to a hunting lodge, where they stumbled upon a shady meeting led by — you guessed it — Nancy’s secret grandfather! After narrowly escaping with their lives (thanks, Ryan!), the gang resumed their search, eventually finding Gil hiding from the forest’s dreaded Midnight Wraith in an abandoned bus. And when their collective positive thoughts fail to defeat the fear-loving wraith, Nancy resorted to plan B: light the damn thing on fire!

After a minor tussle with the authorities, Nancy was eventually released. (Thanks again, Ryan!) Her estranged father also handed over the mirror, which turned out to be much more than just a fancy piece of glass. Hidden beneath the surface was a cryptic message suggesting that the key to defeating the Aglaeca might be… musical? (Sea shanties, they’re not just for TikTok anymore!)

Nancy Drew RecapBelow, executive producers Melinda Hsu Taylor and Noga Landau answer a few of TVLine’s burning questions about the new season:

TVLINE | As I’m sure you fondly remember, the show’s first season was cut short because of the pandemic. How did that affect where you ended things and where you chose to resume the story in Season 2?
Fortunately for us, Episode 18 served as a really great season finale, almost like we planned it — which we definitely did not. [Laughs] But we got to leave people on a great cliffhanger. During the months between the shutdown and when we resumed production, we were on Zoom with the writers figuring out how to move forward. We had four scripts ready to go, which were originally 119, 120, 121 and 122. But 119 didn’t feel like a season premiere, because it wasn’t designed to be one. So we put together what we call 118.5, which takes place in the six hours between the end of 118 and the beginning of 119. We picked up directly with Nancy and the Crew’s visions, and we inserted a new mystery to forward the supernatural investigation and introduce the Bobbsey Twins.

TVLINE | It definitely felt like no time had passed.
We love reminding people that the timeline of the show is very compressed. In Nancy’s world, it was only a week ago tops that she found out she’s Lucy Sable’s daughter. So we’re still in October 2019. And Season 2 only takes place over six weeks, so we will never get to the pandemic in Nancy Drew. We will never, ever have people in face masks on screen on Nancy Drew. (Editor’s note: Thank. Goodness.)

TVLINE | Nancy’s panic attack on the bus suggests that she’s experiencing a bit of an identity crisis. Is that something she’ll explore this season?
That’s really what the season is about for Nancy. It’s hard to be a 19-year-old anyway, figuring out who you are and what you want to do with your life. On top of everything else, she has to reckon with the fact that her parents basically kidnapped her and raised her as their own. And they didn’t tell her that she’s actually from a family of troublesome billionaires who sometimes murder people. She has to figure out who she is. And there’s a lot of nature vs. nurture conflict this season. She starts to worry that she’s more like the Hudsons, as opposed to the Drews, who were always her moral compass.

TVLINE | I also enjoyed Carson and Ryan’s little face-off. Should we expect more friction between them?
Yes, but they’ll also kind of form a bond over time, over the shared desire for Nancy’s wellbeing. I think the odd-couple nature of that relationship is so fun. You’ll see them get to their own détente over the first few episodes. Carson has a lot of atoning to do and wants to rebuild his relationship with Nancy, and Ryan needs a role model for how to be a dad and a grownup. The three of them are one of the most fun triangles on the show, Nancy is not having it from either.

TVLINE | Nick and George are clearly very nervous about telling Nancy that they’re together. Considering everything else she has going on, will she really care that much?
Well, it always stings when that happens. Something I love about our show is that the three girls are always very tight and loyal to one another. That makes it even more bittersweet that George is now the one falling in love with Nick. Nancy wants her friend to be happy, but it also hurts, and Nancy is the type of character who tries to bury that hurt. It will pop up later on in the season. We were just so excited to pursue this romance, which is something that never would have happened in the original canon.

Nancy Drew EPs on That Pair of Insane, Life-Changing Reveals: ‘You Never Know When the Case Will Be Solved’ https://briefnews.eu/nancy-drew-eps-on-that-pair-of-insane-life-changing-reveals-you-never-know-when-the-case-will-be-solved/ https://briefnews.eu/nancy-drew-eps-on-that-pair-of-insane-life-changing-reveals-you-never-know-when-the-case-will-be-solved/#respond Thu, 12 Mar 2020 04:32:06 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/nancy-drew-eps-on-that-pair-of-insane-life-changing-reveals-you-never-know-when-the-case-will-be-solved/

RELATED STORIES

Nancy Drew‘s world was forever changed on Wednesday when she discovered that the most important mystery of her life was the one she didn’t even know she was solving.

Let’s start with reveal numero uno: Lucy Sable’s death wasn’t necessarily a homicide. After literally unearthing Lucy’s diary, Nancy discovered that she had secretly been pregnant. She gave birth on the cliff that night, and her subsequent fall was either an accident or — quite possibly, God forbid — her own decision. Either way, Carson Drew is no longer a suspect in what is no longer being considered a murder.

“We definitely didn’t want to glorify suicide,” executive producers Noga Landau and Melinda Hsu Taylor tell TVLine about building this reveal around such a sensitive subject. “We didn’t want to make it seem in any way aspirational. We wanted to make it seem horribly tragic and very sad.”

In addition to the secret pregnancy, Lucy’s diary also confirmed that the Hudsons used their influence to destroy her reputation in Horseshoe Bay, turning her into a social pariah. This could have factored heavily into Lucy’s potential suicide, showing “what happens to people in an atmosphere of bullying that comes from the top down. It’s not just a matter of kids bullying other kids. It’s a matter of entire communities disgracing young people for their sexuality, for who they love, for their identity, or for anything.”

Nancy Drew RecapThen came the even more mind-blowing reveal: The baby to which Lucy gave birth… was Nancy! The diary explained that Lucy had gotten close with the Drews, so when the couple discovered her on the cliff that night, she gave them her child for safe keeping. It wasn’t necessarily spelled out in the episode, but “the assumption [that Ryan is Nancy’s biological father] is a sound one to make, though we’ll get a little clarity on that in Episode 17,” the EPs tease.

As for Nancy’s relationship with Carson, the upcoming episodes will be “very rough for both of them. Nancy is trying to piece together her identity, both internally and externally, and Carson is going to have to be accountable for some mistakes he’s made, as well as what he’s done out of love and out of a desire to protect Nancy.”

Based on the series’ initial 13-episode order, this one-two punch was going to happen in the finale, but that plan shifted when The CW blessed Nancy with a full-season pickup. As the EPs note, “We’ve set a precedent on the show where you never know when the case is going to get solved. It’s not always the finale. Sometimes it’s earlier than that, and a whole new case will begin.”

Nancy Drew RecapOn a slightly more upbeat note, George and Nick enjoyed a steamy kiss this week (yay romance!), despite Bess emphatically warning them both not to give into their urges.

“It was sometime around Episode 10 when we realized that George and Nick were organically, in the stories we’re telling, moving closer to each other,” the EPs tell us. “[Tunji Kasim and Leah Lewis] are so great on screen together. And the characters are kindred spirits in different ways. They’re frank and they’re down to earth, but they also both hold onto a lot of pain, and they often help others before helping themselves.”

Your thoughts on this monumental episode? Did you predict either of the big twists ahead of their reveals? Whatever’s on your mind, drop it in a comment below.

Nancy Drew: Kennedy McMann to Play Title Role in The CW's Pilot https://briefnews.eu/nancy-drew-kennedy-mcmann-to-play-title-role-in-the-cws-pilot/ https://briefnews.eu/nancy-drew-kennedy-mcmann-to-play-title-role-in-the-cws-pilot/#respond Thu, 14 Feb 2019 20:52:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nancy-drew-kennedy-mcmann-to-play-title-role-in-the-cws-pilot/

A-ha! The CW has broken out its magnifying glass and found an actress to star in its Nancy Drew series. Newcomer Kennedy McMann will play the iconic title role, according to our sister site Deadline.

“Set in the summer after her high school graduation, 18-year-old Nancy Drew thought she’d be leaving her hometown for college,” per the official description. “But when a family tragedy holds her back another year, she finds herself embroiled in a ghostly murder investigation — and along the way, uncovers secrets that run deeper than she ever imagined.” The Magicians writer Noga Landau will pen the pilot script along with Gossip Girl and The O.C. veterans Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

This marks the first series regular role for McMann, a Carnegie Mellon graduate who’s appeared in recent episodes of Law & Order: SVU and Gone. Also joining the cast: Leah Lewis (Charmed, The Good Doctor), who co-stars as George, a tough girl from the wrong side of the tracks who becomes a suspect in the central murder case.

Based on the beloved teen detective novels by Carolyn Keene, Nancy Drew earned a pilot order at The CW last month. Vampire Diaries and The Gifted veteran Melinda Hsu Taylor will serve as showrunner, with Larry Teng (Supergirl) directing the pilot.

  • President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday afternoon to ask House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to “make a deal” that includes funding for a wall along the southern US border.
  • Trump’s tweet comes 11 days into a partial government shutdown that came after gridlock among congressional lawmakers who did not secure Trump’s requested $ 5 billion for a wall along the southern US border.
  • Democrats have released plans to reopen the government, but none include funding for the wall.

President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday afternoon to ask House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to “make a deal” that includes his desired $ 5 billion in funding for a wall along the southern US border.

Trump wrote: “Border Security and the Wall “thing” and Shutdown is not where Nancy Pelosi wanted to start her tenure as Speaker! Let’s make a deal?”

  • President Donald Trump told House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi that Mexico would pay for a wall along the US-Mexico border through the updated North American Free Trade Agreement.
  • The deal does not include any provisions compelling Mexico to pay for a border wall.
  • Trump also argued that increased economic growth from the agreement would pay for the wall, but Democrats pushed back on that idea.

President Donald Trump told House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer that Mexico would pay for his proposed wall along the border, but the president made a head-scratching claim about how that would happen.

According to sources with knowledge of private portions of Trump’s contentious meeting with the Democratic leaders, Trump insisted that Mexico would eventually pay for the wall. He said that would happen via the newly updated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), now named the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Oliver! turns 50: What happened to Shani Wallis who played Nancy? https://briefnews.eu/oliver-turns-50-what-happened-to-shani-wallis-who-played-nancy/ https://briefnews.eu/oliver-turns-50-what-happened-to-shani-wallis-who-played-nancy/#respond Mon, 01 Jan 2018 16:44:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/oliver-turns-50-what-happened-to-shani-wallis-who-played-nancy/

Shani did not get on with Oliver Reed

But it’s a film musical celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018 for which Wallis will always be best remembered. Based on the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, Oliver! also starred Mark Lester in the title role, Ron Moody as Fagin, Oliver Reed as Bill Sikes, Harry Secombe as Mr Bumble, and Jack Wild as The Artful Dodger, and won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Wallis played Nancy whose songs were As Long As He Needs Me, Oom-Pah-Pah, and It’s A Fine Life – which is the working title of the autobiography she’s currently writing at the age of 84.

Success in musicals both in the UK and US prompted writer and critic Kenneth Tynan to label her “the English Judy Garland”. More than five decades of living Stateside have given the very chatty Wallis an unusual mid-Atlantic cockney accent. “I can’t believe it’s been 50 years,” she says, adding that she divides her life into the time before and after her appearance in the film, so important was Oliver!’s role in her career.

“Its fans and my continuous new young followers remind me constantly each time they see it by writing with love and joy. So how is it possible to feel old, and how could it feel like 50 years? More like just a minute or two.”

Born in Tottenham on April 16, 1933, Willis says she was always destined to entertain: “From when I came out of the womb, I never wanted to do anything else. I don’t remember ever not wanting to sing, dance, play piano, and act. “My father, James Wallis, became deaf in the First World War as a cavalryman suffering explosions and gas. He thought I was the cat’s whiskers but he never heard me sing.”

Shani as she is today

Having learnt ballet and tap-dancing in childhood, Wallis won a scholarship to top drama school Rada. For her first job, in 1951, she took over from Audrey Hepburn in an all-girls show at Ciro’s nightclub in London. At 18 she made her theatrical debut in the musical Call Me Madam at the London Coliseum, and other stage shows followed in the West End and Broadway. In 1957, in only her third film, A King In New York, Charlie Chaplin cast her as a cabaret singer.

“Chaplin invited me up to his suite at the Savoy Hotel, but there was no funny business!’ she chuckles. ‘I watched him as he wrote The Nickelodeon Song for me.’

Wallis moved to the US, and there met the American agent Bernie Rich who became her husband in 1968 – the year Oliver! was released. One of her guest appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show had earned her an audition for Nancy, for which she beat off competition from Elizabeth Taylor, Georgia Brown, and Shirley Bassey.

“I remember the producer John Woolf asking if I could do a Cockney accent, and I said, ‘Of course, I come from Tottenham!’ I was lucky enough to be chosen. Maybe I had the ‘family’ quality required. But I always felt Lionel Bart [the creator and composer of Oliver!] didn’t think I had the right to do it.’

Of Oliver Reed as Nancy’s bullying boyfriend Bill Sikes, she recalls: “I hardly spoke a word to him while making the movie. He was a p***er. All he wanted was to go through every girl in the chorus. Perhaps not having any relationship was better for both of us on-screen.” But Wallis had a great relationship with the children in the cast, including Mark Lester and Jack Wild. “All the kids were incredible. Mark was a serious kid and we had to do things to make him laugh. Jack had a wonderful personality. All the cast were perfect for their parts.”

OliverGETTY

The film Oliver! turns 50 this year

Lester and Wild both subsequently went off-the-rails, indulging in drugs and drink respectively. Lester recovered but left acting to become an osteopath and recently married for the third time at 59. An alcoholic at 21 and a heavy smoker, Wild died from mouth cancer in 2006 aged 53. “Child actors are very prone to all that stuff, and I do feel they should’ve had help, especially Jack,” she says.

Wallis admits that after Oliver! she made “a lot of mistakes” professionally. “When I returned to America, I had offers to do what became a very famous series on television, The Brady Bunch or The Partridge Family – I can’t remember which. I didn’t want to do that, I wanted to do movies.

“I lost out to Jean Seberg for the female lead in the 1969 movie musical, Paint Your Wagon, starring Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin. Others like Doctor Dolittle flopped and they decided not to make any more, and that was a big blow.”

Wallis went on to appear in films such as Terror In The Wax Museum and Mayday At 40,000 Feet, TV series such as Charlie’s Angels, Murder She Wrote, and daytime soap The Young And The Restless in which she was a regular. But her greatest triumphs have been on stage, including a Broadway show, a stint in Las Vegas and tours with Liberace and Jack Benny.

“I may be forgotten in Britain but I’ve been extremely lucky in America,” she says. “Jack Benny was like a father to me. When I was working in Vegas with Jack, Edward G Robinson came to Jack’s dressing room after a show and I sat with him on the floor in the room.

“At the time he was deaf like my Dad, but we communicated so well. I travelled with Liberace for years, all over the world, and I adored him. He loved me to wear boas – anything that made me look larger than life – and he bought me jewellery to make me look flash, then said on stage, ‘Shani, where are my sunglasses!’

“I was booked on Dean Martin’s show in California and happened to be playing Vegas at the same time. I chartered a plane to get there and back so as not to miss shows. It was fun but crazy because Bernie loved flying and I hated it! In Vegas, Frank Sinatra would introduce me from the stage saying, ‘We’ve got Shani Wallis in the audience… she did a wonderful job in Oliver!” That gives me goose bumps even now.

“One reason I wish I was young again is I didn’t appreciate all the exciting things that happened to me. It passed me by so quickly and I didn’t think too much about it. I didn’t realise what an honour and thrill it was to be involved in so many great things.”

Since losing her husband of 48 years to cancer in 2016, Wallis has moved to a condo in southern California where she keeps mementoes of her career. Their daughter Rebecca, 46, who works in pharmaceuticals, and grandchildren live 20 minutes away, but Wallis confides: “I’m so lonely. I miss my love so much. I talk to him every day, and cry every day.”

Nonetheless, she keeps herself fit, proud to still be a Size Zero, and continues to sing and play piano. I’d love to do an album again. If anyone wanted to do one with me, I’d fly to the Moon!”

In 2018, Wallis will fly to London to see old friends, including Mark Lester with whom she may raise a glass to celebrate Oliver’s landmark anniversary.

However, she has mixed feelings about the British film company Working Title’s plan to re-make Oliver!

“The original is looked upon as a work of art. People love it, it’s timeless and will last forever. If they think they can do it better, let’s see. I think it’s pretty perfect as it is. But maybe I could play Peggy Mount’s part of Mrs Bumble!”

Working Title denies rumours that Adele, another Tottenham songstress, will play Nancy. Even she would have struggled to surpass Wallis whose impact will live on long after her lifetime.

“I’m nobody now – I’m just me,” she says, “but there are a lot of Shanis around. Many mothers were pregnant when they saw Oliver! and called their daughters Shani… and sent me pictures of them. It’s one of many reasons I feel very honoured to have been part of such a magnificent movie.”
