Astronomers think it’s possible that moons can have their own mini-moon – but the scientific suggestion that they should be called ‘moonmoons’ is not going down well among those with a more poetic inclination.

The term ‘moonmoons’ started with astrophysicist Duncan Forgan, reports ScienceAlert, who has written a paper awaiting publishing on the topic.

More recently, astronomers Juna Kollmeier and Sean Raymond wrote their own paper describing how moonmoons could actually be possible. However, they opted for a slightly less ridiculous, but equally disappointing, name of ‘submoon’.

Twitter users in particular are very displeased at the missed opportunity to name something that is not technically even a thing right now, but very well might be confirmed as a thing in the future.

While ‘moonmoons’ may not actually be the agreed upon term for this speculative phenomenon (we’re guessing that honor goes to the person who actually finds a real-life example), that didn’t stop the Australian House of Representatives throwing shade over the suggestion.

To really throw a spanner in the works, another planetary astronomer, Michele Bannister of Queens University Belfast, told New Scientist that she would tend to opt for a ‘moonmoonlet’, to be precise.

“I think we can say for sure that there’s not a moonmoon that’s kilometers across around Jupiter or Saturn. A moonmoon down to the size of a skyscraper could exist out there, but I’d call it moonmoonlet,” she explained.

Seen as an attempt to copy German brands like BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz, General Motors’ luxury arm began aggressively chasing the trend in the new millennium. But a great many traditionalists still feel that alphanumeric names are […]

America’s Treasury refrains from naming any currency manipulators https://briefnews.eu/americas-treasury-refrains-from-naming-any-currency-manipulators/ https://briefnews.eu/americas-treasury-refrains-from-naming-any-currency-manipulators/#respond Wed, 25 Apr 2018 20:47:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/americas-treasury-refrains-from-naming-any-currency-manipulators/

MOST governments are happy when foreigners want their bonds, especially when those foreigners are long-term holders, like central banks. But America is different. It worries that some foreign governments buy its debt to keep the dollar pricey and their own currencies cheap. This “currency manipulation” gives other countries a competitive edge, raising their own trade surpluses and America’s deficit.

Brad Setser of the Council on Foreign Relations, a think-tank, sees an “arc of intervention” across Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan and South Korea that has slowed the dollar’s decline over the past nine months. America has reportedly persuaded South Korea to forswear currency manipulation in a “side-agreement” to their revised trade deal. And on April 16th President Donald Trump tweeted that “Russia and China are playing the Currency Devaluation game…Not acceptable!”

Mr Trump’s tweet was at odds with his Treasury Department’s assessment. Every six months it must tell Congress if any…

Mercedes files trademarks for new naming scheme https://briefnews.eu/mercedes-files-trademarks-for-new-naming-scheme/ https://briefnews.eu/mercedes-files-trademarks-for-new-naming-scheme/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2018 23:53:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mercedes-files-trademarks-for-new-naming-scheme/

“You see, you can tell the difference between a regular Mercedes and an AMG model because the Benz has three numbers with a zero on the end, while the AMG has only two numbers and no zero.”

That simple equation has made it easy to help people tell regular Benzes apart from their amped up brethren (and from the fake AMG-badged poseurs running around). Alas, it looks like that might be coming to an end. AutoGuide has spotted that Mercedes has trademarked a new naming convention in Canada and other markets.

Essentially, regular-series Mercedes will continue to end in a zero, but there will only be two numbers. AMG will also have two numbers, but those will all end in “3.” Applications include A 40, CLA 40, SLC 40, SLC 50 and GLE 50 in Canada, along with CLA 53, G73 and S73. Yes, “73,” which would be the new range-topper, probably with AMG’s new performance hybrid powertrain.

It’s important to keep two things in mind. First, Mercedes models are now specified as -Benz, -AMG and -Maybach, meaning you’d be looking at a Mercedes-Benz CLA 40 and Mercedes-AMG CLA 53, for instance. And second, having three numbers no longer serves a purpose since those numbers no longer correspond with engine output in any way.

There’s no such evidence of a similar application made in the United States, but if this is the way of the Benz future, it’s hard to imagine Mercedes doing something different here (although Audi is doing just that).

Car enthusiasts and physics concur: Tallness is inherently at odds with fun. At least when it comes to driving; Wilt Chamberlain probably disagreed. Regardless, the tall, banausic crossover proliferates. So abundant are these be-hatched trucklets that we find ourselves desperately trying to classify them, adding words such as “premium,” “compact,” and—wait for it—“performance.” Yet those three adjectives aptly characterize the machines before you, all of which occupy a tiny but expanding corner of the crossover universe. Audi announces new two-digit naming system https://briefnews.eu/audi-announces-new-two-digit-naming-system/ https://briefnews.eu/audi-announces-new-two-digit-naming-system/#respond Wed, 23 Aug 2017 22:31:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/audi-announces-new-two-digit-naming-system/

Once upon a time, model numbers indicated a car’s engine displacement. A BMW 328i had a 2.8-liter engine, a Mercedes S500 had a 5.0-liter V8, etc. Then engine downsizing happened. Since a new car couldn’t have a lower and thus seemingly inferior number than its predecessor, we ended up with model numbers that represented nothing but an incremental trip up the heirarchy. Perhaps it makes no difference to consumers, but Audi has announced that it’s going to bring order to chaos with a new name/badging system for the 2018 model year.

Here’s how it works. Current model names (A4, Q5, etc.) will remain the same, but their engine designations (2.0T, 3.0T, etc) will switch to a two-digit number that represents the car’s horsepower (or kilowatts as Audi used in the announcement) regardless of whether it runs on gasoline, diesel, electricity or a combination of fuels.

The numbering starts at 30, which Audi explains represents engines making 110 to 131 horsepower. The other example Audi gives is 45, which represents cars making 230 to 252 hp. At the top of the range is 70, which is for cars that make over 544 hp. As an example, our 252-horsepower Audi A4 Allroad long-term car would have a 45 appended to its hatch-mounted “allroad” badge along with TFSI to denote that it’s powered by gasoline.

It’s not a consistent system, though. The range of power covered by each number isn’t consistent, and there are some gaps, as shown by Autocar’s complete breakdown of the numbering scheme using British brake horsepower. For instance, the 40 range covers cars between 170 and 203 of our horsepower, a difference of about 30 hp compared with a difference of about 20 hp for the 45 range. This also means that there isn’t a new number for cars making between 204 and 229 hp. Even though Audi may not currently have engines in the gap zones, it seems like expanding each group to fill the gaps would be a useful way to future-proof the system for new engines.

Despite this, we appreciate Audi’s attempt to bring meaning to badging again. There’s also another good reason for the system. It provides a unified way of ranking powertrains instead of displacement, which isn’t necessarily accurate at conveying performance between gas and diesel engines, and is irrelevant for electric and electrified powertrains.

As Dr. Dietmar Voggenreiter, board of management member for sales and marketing at AUDI AG, puts it, “As alternative drive technologies become increasingly relevant, engine displacement as a performance attribute is becoming less important to our customers. The clarity and logic of structuring the designations according to power output makes it possible to distinguish between the various performance levels.”

However, before you start memorizing future names and numbers, there’s a chance they won’t even be making it to the United States. While an Audi representative in Germany told us that the new naming strategy was global and that it would indeed be coming here, a representative in the United States indicated that it had not been confirmed. Such confusion is not unusual, however, and we expect a definitive answer in the near future as corporate wires become uncrossed.

ADELAIDE’S international three-day equestrian event has secured the backing of multinational car manufacturer Mitsubishi.

It is a welcome return from the car maker, which sponsored the event from 2000 to 2005 and is now returning as a naming-rights sponsor.

The prestigious November event in Adelaide’s eastern parklands will from this year be known as the Mitsubishi Motors Australian Three Day Event.

Event director Gillian Rolton was chuffed with the support.

“This year, we are celebrating 20 years since the first event was held in Adelaide’s parklands, and we are thrilled to be able to share this milestone year with Mitsubishi Motors as our major sponsor,” Rolton said.

Adelaide’s premier equestrian event is one of only six CCI four-star events in the world and the only one in the southern hemisphere.

It attracts more than 25,000 spectators each year as world-class riders compete in dressage, cross-country and show jumping.

This year, the event will also serve as the qualifying competition for the Australian team for the 2018 World Equestrian Games in North Carolina.

The 2017 Mitsubishi Motors Aus3DE will be held from November 16-19.

Tickets go on sale at Ticketek next week.

Tourism minister Leon Bignell said the sponsorship was a boon for the state.

“The three day event keeps getting better each year — there’s no other place in the world where you can see world-class equestrian competition in the centre of the city,” Bignell said.

“The State Government has invested an additional $ 70 million in marketing South Australia and this pays great dividends — particularly with the International Three Day Event on our annual calendar. It was named Event of the Year at the 2016 Equestrian Australia Sport Achievement Awards.”

Sometimes, despite all the rich adjectives and clever metaphors in the English language, the verbiage of a little boy best describes a car. This red car is super fast. It is a Ferrari. Ergo, it is called the Ferrari 812 Superfast.

–

For its 70th birthday, Ferrari is once again resurrecting the Superfast name, first seen on the 4.9 Superfast that was the quickest car we tested in the 1950s. Then as now, Ferrari’s most powerful 12-cylinder engine resides in this new 812 Superfast, a hairier evolution of the extreme F12tdf introduced for 2016. Ferrari bored out its naturally aspirated 6.3-liter V-12 to 6.5 liters and fitted a new 5076-psi direct-injection system for just shy of 800 horsepower (the 8 in the name is a reference to the car’s 800 metric horsepower)—call it 789 in American.

–

Equipped with the same variable-length intake runners that shorten and lengthen the intake tracts to maximize airflow, the new V-12 achieves that lofty power output at 8500 rpm, along with 530 lb-ft of torque at 7000 rpm. That equals the LaFerrari’s power and bests its 516 lb-ft. It also beats the F12tdf’s 769 ponies and 520 lb-ft. Lest a turbocharged 488GTB enter the debate, a full 80 percent of the Superfast’s torque is available at 3500 rpm. Ferrari claims a zero-to-62-mph time of 2.9 seconds, a top speed of 211 mph, and upon request will cite more figures no other front-engined production car could hope to match.

Software plays an even more significant role here than in the F12tdf. A second generation of Ferrari’s virtual short wheelbase (Maranello’s name for rear-wheel steering), a fifth version of its side slip control, and Ferrari’s first ever electric power steering promise invincibility. The seven-speed dual-clutch automatic sports new gear ratios and quicker shifting times. All the familiar reactive aero flaps in the front, venturis out back, vents, intakes, and aerodynamic wonders are here, but there’s no wing to disrupt the Superfast’s slippery body. Whether or not it’s more beautiful than the original F12berlinetta is the one burning question we’ve raised about all Ferrari models since the company dropped Pininfarina in favor of its own styling studio. The Superfast shares the F12tdf’s length but is 0.4 inch wider and 0.1 inch taller. Ferrari will release more details in the coming weeks as it prepares for the Superfast’s debut at the Geneva auto show. Although pricing is not yet being discussed, a spokesman told C/D that it is most “appropriate” to compare its cost with that of the F12berlinetta, which currently sells for just under $ 330,000.

–

–

Back to the kid-friendly name: Ferrari’s last modern use of Superfast was in 2009, when it built one gold-colored P540 Superfast Aperta based off the 599GTB. We keep seeing Superfast Ferraris coming up at auctions, too. In January, a 1965 Superfast Series I sold in Scottsdale for more than $ 2.9 million. Two other Superfast coupes sold at Monterey in 2015 and 2016, respectively, for $ 3.03 million and $ 2.75 million. All had a 5.0-liter V-12 with 400 horsepower that hit 170 mph—on 1960s-era tires and with 1960s-era brakes. Maxing the 812 Superfast should be altogether less frightening, but let’s not think too deeply: It’s just really, really fast.
