Netflix on Tuesday evening promptly removed one of the thumbnails it has in rotation for the reality competition Nailed It!, after the questionable composition was brought to the attention of co-host Nicole Byer.
Said thumbnail (shown at right, in a since-deleted tweet grabbed by E! News) featured assistant director “Wes” (who sometimes appears on-camera) and co-host Jacques Torres. Netflix is known to run “A/B” tests of different thumbnail images on its homepage, tailored to specific customers/their established preferences or merely to offer a variety of visual cues. (The streamer has also been accused of changing the order in which episodes are arranged based on the viewer’s assumed sexual identity, but that’s a whole other hullabaloo.)
Byer at first responded with a series of tweets that questioned the thumbnail’s composition, saying, “If Netflix didn’t sign my checks and give me a huge platform and opportunity to showcase my comedy, I would talk about how… disrespectful this is to me a black woman [and] how black women are a lot of times erased from many different conversations…. I would talk about how it makes me know my true value as the host of the show where I work incredibly hard to elevate the material given to me…. I would talk about how this [is] essentially white washing for more views. But they sign my checks and I’m honestly so happy and grateful to and for the show and no sarcasm I love my job and wish to keep it so I’ll be quiet.”
Byer later removed those tweets after obtaining resolution to the perceived slight.
“I deleted my last set of tweets [because] I talked to one the execs on my show about it and the thrilling conclusion is the removal of the image and a conversation about how the thumbnails are made and selected that I’m happy with,” she wrote.
Have you ever taken particular notice of the talent featured in one of Netflix’s “A/B” thumbnail rotations to promote one of its offerings? Do you sometimes feel the streaming giant’s clever algorithms are trying a wee bit too hard?

Pryor Baird (Team Blake), “Night Moves” — Grade: B | This match-up of singer and song could scarcely have been any more perfect. Pryor’s barbed-wire voice wrapped around the Bob Seger classic as if it had been doing so for years. (And who knows? Maybe Pryor does cover it on the regular.) I couldn’t understand half of the lyrics and liked it, anyway, as I suspected those who in general (like me) dig Pryor’s gravel-lined larynx would. Those who haven’t been buying what Pryor’s selling — and he has started to seem like a rather polarizing contestant, hasn’t he? — probably shrugged and said, “Been there, heard that.”
Sharane Calister (Team Adam), “Hero” — Grade: D | The Mariah cover that viewers selected for Sharane should have suited her to a T but ultimately suited her to some other letter entirely. Her breathy verse was OK, if uncertain, but as she headed toward the showstopper moments, pitch problems began undermining her in a big way. By the time she got to really let loose, the performance had gone off the rails, so much so that I wondered if this had been just plain the wrong key for her. “I was afraid” before Sharane went on, her coach admitted. But if I were him, I would’ve been more worried afterward. Not her finest hour.
Kaleb Lee (Team Kelly), “T-R-O-U-B-L-E” — Grade: B- | Kelly was delighted that fans had chosen “a personality song” for Kaleb. But I wasn’t sure before he took the stage that he’d have enough personality to do it justice. Nice guy, sure; I just don’t imagine that he’s the life of the party, know what I mean? On stage, Kaleb’s vocals were really good, and I’m crazy about his growl — maybe especially because, unlike Pryor, he doesn’t use it every second of every song — but I’m sorry, he’s got about as much charisma as a mic stand.
Jackie Foster (Team Alicia), “Love Reign O’er Me” — Grade: A | Immediately, I could see (hear?) why viewers chose this oldie by The Who for Jackie: In theory, it would let her show off her crazy range and rock-goddess pipes without running too great a risk of her veering into screechy territory. When she took to the mic, she immediately began redeeming herself for “Toxic,” and by the time she nailed the first chorus, I was like, “Oo, she’s got this… she’s sooo got this.” And damn, she really did. I bit my nails through the whole song, fearing that she’d stumble along the way, but nope, she started strong and ended even stronger. This was terrific to the last note.
Jackie Verna (Team Adam), “Strawberry Wine” — Grade: A- | The Deana Carter number that fans picked for Adam’s country girl didn’t force her to strain vocally like I’ve so often felt that she’s had to. (“I’m With You,” for instance.) Instead, the ballad provided a lovely showcase for the sunny, honey-soaked quality that in its best moments her voice possesses. And Jackie was solid from start to finish. In fact, if you closed your eyes, you would’ve believed you were listening to the iTunes version. Pure and simple, and simply gorgeous.
Kyla Jade (Team Blake), “Sweet Sweet Baby (Since You’ve Been Gone)” — Grade: B+ | This was a blast. Remember when Kyla Blind-Auditioned with Aretha’s “See Saw”? Her voice was impressive, but her star power was on, like, “energy save.” Here, maybe having had her confidence raised as she survived round after round, she owned the stage, delivering a performance that was as much fun to watch as it was to listen to. That ginormous last note alone — come on! That was just a powerhouse singer having herself a good time.
Christiana Danielle (Team Alicia), “Umbrella” — Grade: C- | As we’ve come to expect from Christiana, she didn’t just cover Rihanna’s smash, she reinvented it. And since I’m a sucker for a creative redo, I expected to love it. I just didn’t, though. Christiana’s voice seemed to come and go, like it was getting tripped up by her vibrato. And when she was singing softly toward the end, she was beset by pitch issues. So, in the final analysis, this was another cool idea, just one whose potential wasn’t quite realized. (Note to self: Go back and check the iTunes version; I’m sure once that vocal was sweetened and leveled out by an engineer, this was all kinds of awesome.)
Brynn Cartelli (Team Kelly), “You and I” — Grade: C | Viewers served Brynn a real toughie: Lady Gaga’s hit requires serious chops to pull off. But, though that’s exactly the kind of chops the 15-year-old has — serious — much of her swampy rendition fell, well, flat. It wasn’t awful or anything; some of it was even pretty good. Yet the overall impression it left was that, no matter how much oomph Brynn threw at the song, she was getting swallowed up by the band instead of belting over the music. Not a disaster, but not a triumph, either.
Rayshun LaMarr (Team Adam), “Try a Little Tenderness” — Grade: B+ | If anybody was going to deliver as big a wow as Chris Weaver did with this Otis Redding classic, it was gonna be Rayshun, the human embodiment of a live wire. He was in great voice Monday, throwing in more runs than you’d find at a track meet, and heaven knows he put on an energetic show. (Can’t believe that, as much as he danced around, his vocal never faltered — that’s impressive.) Unfortunately, given the way he’s historically polled — which has next to nothing to do with the way he’s historically performed — I suspected he’d still be singing for the Save on Tuesday.
Britton Buchanan (Team Alicia), “Perfect” — Grade: C+ | OK, I was shipping the idea of Britton and onetime duet partner Jaclyn Lovey as a couple. But it was still a pretty sweet revelation that he’s actually dating Livia Faith. As for his take on Ed Sheeran… hmm. It wasn’t my favorite performance of his. Yes, he came off as sincere as ever, and some of it was powerful and pretty. But I didn’t feel like, as his coach suggested, he’d murdered the song. At best, I thought it was more… attempted murder. He can do and has done much better.
Spensha Baker (Team Blake), “Better Man” — Grade: C+ | Over the course of this season, Spensha has been hit-and-miss for me. Some weeks, she’s sounded like an obvious frontrunner; others, I’ve wondered how she’s hung in there for so long. Monday, her performance was a little bit of both. When she was at her best — toward the middle, as she hit her stride — she was really tremendous. But at the front and back of the number, she was weaker; she sounded like she wasn’t sure if she was singing in key. Truth be told, I wasn’t sure, either!
So, what did you think of the viewer’s-choice selections? And whose singing knocked you off your sofa? Vote in the poll below, then hit the comments.

The New England Patriots are the betting favorite to beat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII, and Nate Silver’s model at FiveThirtyEight agrees.
Using a rating system that accounts for margin of victory, home-field advantage, strength of schedule, and prior performance, and then simulating the playoffs thousands of times, Silver determined the probability each team had of winning every playoff game and the Super Bowl.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

The NFL regular season is now over, and despite a slow start, Microsoft’s Cortana stormed back and won the head-to-head showdown with Elo.
We took a look at two popular systems used to pick NFL games: Cortana, Microsoft’s digital assistant, and Elo, the modeling system used by Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight. In both cases, the computers pick outright winners and not against the spread. However, each gives a likelihood of a team’s winning, which, in theory, could help measure the strength of certain lines.
Cortana won the regular season matchup, going 162-78 (68%) overall, and 111-38 (75%) over the last ten weeks (we did not track Week 17 because of the wonky nature of the final week). Elo was not far behind, going 154-86 (64%) overall.
Cortana kept up the hot streak during the Wild Card round, going 3-1, missing only the Titans’ upset of the Chiefs. Meanwhile, Elo was 2-2.
Here are the picks for the divisional round, with each model’s percent chance of winning in parentheses. Games in bold are where the two models disagree on who has the best chance to win. Point spreads are just for reference, via Vegas Insider as of Thursday morning.

It’s conventional stock market wisdom that when investors run out of fresh cash to deploy, the end of a rally is near.
Luckily, we’re nowhere near that extreme scenario.
As Goldman Sachs pointed out in a recent research note, the current cash position of 3.2% for mutual funds is “normal,” showing that “skepticism abounds.” In other words, the stock market lacks the type of overexuberant sentiment that can leave it vulnerable.
Legendary investor Laszlo Birinyi — who has nailed the eight-year bull market at every turn — wholeheartedly agrees. In his view, the high level of cash still sitting on the sidelines is one of the most underappreciated elements of stock bullishness. Sure, strong earnings growth is great, but it’s futile if there isn’t ample money to invest.
In an interview with Business Insider, the president of Birinyi Associates discussed his thoughts on cash levels, while also covering such hot-button market topics as volatility, equity valuations, exchange-traded funds, and the effect of politics on the market.
Here’s what Birinyi had to say (emphasis added):
“I don’t think people appreciate how much cash there is in today’s market. It seems like everything is just an excuse to put that cash to work, whether it’s a tax bill or economics or [President Donald Trump’s chief economic adviser Gary] Cohn not leaving the White House — those are all just excuses. The bond market is unsettled, and you’ve removed some of the stock-market concerns of the last couple years, most notably earnings. People are feeling a little more confident and willing to invest, and they have the cash to do it.
The other issue is that while the averages are lackluster, there’s a lot of trading money focused on individual stocks. The S&P may not have moved 1% or 2% in however many days, but the reality is that stocks are having really good days. You have a lot of individual stock volatility, which reflects the fact that people have the funds and they’re looking for vehicles in which to manifest those funds. They’re using single stocks as the vehicles, not broad asset classes such as emerging markets or gold or commodities. The critical ingredient in the market is cash.“

Betting against stock market volatility is one of the hottest trades in the market.
It’s also one of the most controversial, with many pundits viewing it as increasingly vulnerable to a market blowup.
Legendary investor Laszlo Birinyi — who has nailed the eight-year bull market at every turn — is staying out of the fray completely. Having experienced considerable success simply trading on the benchmark S&P 500 index and evaluating stocks on an individual basis, the president of Birinyi Associates views the whole exercise as pointless.
In an interview with Business Insider, Birinyi discussed his view on CBOE Volatility Index — or VIX — while also covering such hot-button market topics as equity valuations, exchange-traded funds, the effect of politics on the market, and what important factor he thinks investors are missing.
Here’s what Birinyi had to say when asked about low volatility (emphasis added):
“Like so many things, that is a characteristic of a market. When people say to me that the market hasn’t had a 1% run in a certain number of days, that tells me just that. It doesn’t tell me anything about tomorrow or what’s going to happen.
The VIX isn’t the fear index — it’s a measure of potential volatility in either direction. Yet for some reason, people have glommed onto the idea that if the VIX spikes, the market’s going to go down. No, when the VIX spikes, it means the market could go either up or down a lot. If you go back to the bottom in 2009, the VIX was telling you that there were going to be another two years of a bear market. It tells you about volatility, not direction. To me, it’s just another vehicle. It’s totally meaningless with regard to the future of the market. In an uninteresting market, people have found that this is something you can play. It seems like VIX ETFs and [exchange-traded notes] are a quick way to lose money.“

AUSTIN, Texas—TV pilots ain’t what they used to be, as the Netflix model takes much of the weight off a first episode’s shoulders. Series can take their time revealing characters, unfolding plots, or even having much plot take place in a single episode.
Weirdly, the first hour-long episode of Starz’ new American Gods series feels like a relic of that older era—in all of the best ways. This is TV built to stun, with equal parts momentum and cautious pauses, and it won’t embarrass fans of its source material. The Neil Gaiman novel of the same name has no shortage of mystery, intrigue, and surprise in its first few dozen pages. Starz’ take on the book manages to follow its every major plot thread to a satisfying degree, all while setting into motion a solid framework for how we should expect the modern-fantasy epic to unravel.
