More of a horror film than the average superhero blockbuster, The New Mutants follows a team of superpowered teens who awaken in a mysterious hospital, led by Bragas’ Dr Reyes. As the group begins to hone their abilities, they eventually take on a series of terrifying threats, including a supernatural being known as the Demon Bear. A trailer was released earlier this year which showcased the blockbuster’s spookiest moments, and may have teased Dr Reyes becoming the Demon Bear’s first victim. Braga appears in an official still for the film in which she is seen covered in claw marks and her eyes bloodshot, causing concern for her character’s fate.

Now, a new report sheds some light on exactly what’s going on with this film.
Oh, and it also reveals that Mad Men star Jon Hamm was, at one point, going to appear as classic X-Men villain Mr. Sinister. But not anymore.
The news comes from Jeff Sneider of The Tracking Board, who has a strong record with this kind of reporting. So while you should take this with all of the salt usually applied to anonymously sourced movie scooping, I’d feel pretty good about trusting this one.
While the bulk of this report deals with the behind-the-scenes goings-on with Boone and Fox (more on that in a moment), the big geeky bombshell is the news that Hamm was on the verge of joining the X-Men movie universe. Here’s what you need to know:
Meanwhile, remember the Essex Corporation that was teased at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse? Well not only was New Mutants going to feature that mysterious company, but The Tracking Board has learned that Jon Hamm was originally going to appear as Mr. Sinister in a tag at the end of New Mutants, and Boone filmed material that led up to that reveal, only for Fox to change their minds after shooting had been completed.
Interestingly, the report adds that the tag will still exist, but it will be a completely different villain, this one played by Antonio Banderas. Also of note when it comes to deleted New Mutants characters: the character of Warlock, a mutant mechanical organism with the power to infect living creatures with a techno-organic virus, was in the original script, but was cut because he would have been too expensive to realize on screen.
Does this mean we’ll never get to see Mr. Sinister, an immortal telepath and iconic X-Men baddie, in a movie? I doubt it. He’s too major of a bad guy and he’d look great on the big screen. And you know what? Jon Hamm is a great fit for a genetically altered scientific genius with a bone to pick with mutant kind. Maybe we’ll see him in another movie yet.
The bulk of The Tracking Board’s report focuses on the film’s complex and sometimes backwards production. It seems that the horror-centric first trailer for The New Mutants wasn’t entirely reflective of the film’s tone. In fact, it was cut together after the surprise blockbuster success of It last year, when Fox rightfully noticed that audiences were hungry for frightening genre fare that didn’t look like it was made for two crumpled $ 5 bills. (The original, less scary cut of the film reportedly tested quite well.)
So the reshoots are focused on making the film scarier and gnarlier, elements that Boone was originally forced to tone down during production. In other words, the silver lining to all of this chaos may be that Boone gets to make a movie closer to what he wanted to make in the first place, before a Fox-appointed writers’ room drastically reworked the original script he wrote with Knate Lee.
As of now, The New Mutants is set to open on August 2, 2019.

And then there was one…
After years of 20th Century Fox disappointmets with flawed X-Men, Fantastic Four movies, 2018 looked like it was all finally coming together.
Deadpool 2, New Mutants and Dark Phoenix signalled a new confident strategy for the studio’s Marvel properties.
A major reshuffle today just shocked fans by knocking two of those movies off the board. Winter really is coming, since both these movies starred Game of Thrones leading ladies.
Maisie Willaims’ New Mutants released a tantalising trailer ahead of its expected April 2018 release date but was then suddenly pulled from the schedules.
Rumours of reshoots imemdiately surfaced.
Sophie Turner’s Dark Phoenix, the latest in the rebooted X-Men franchise was expected to hit cinemas in November.
Earlier today it was anounced that it was being pushed back to February 2018.
Again, this was accompanied by troubling reports, but there is also a growing sweet spot in February that has seen movies like Black Panther and the first Deadpool achieve dramatic box office figures.
The New Mutants news is far more worrying, since the project has had its release date constantly delayed.
Based on early images and that first trailer, the movie is chasing a tricky teen horror superhero niche which could be refreshing and revolutionary, but could also be a huge misfire.
The only good news is that the Freddie Mercury Queen biopic has been moved forward to take the spot vacated by Dark Phoenix.
After Bryan Singer was removed from the project, there was huge concern over the high-profile project.
Strong early reports on Rami Malek’s performance as the iconic frontman are already garnering awards buzz, while Dexter Fletcher’s steady hand at the helm looks set to bring Bohemian Rhapsody home in fine style.
Josh Boone‘s New Mutants looked fairly promising, but it was recently pushed off the 2018 release calendar to 2019. As we wait for the film to arrive, Boone has offered some updates, including the confirmation that New Mutants is aiming for a PG-13 rating and that none of the characters will be decked out in superhero costumes.
When New Mutants was first announced, it was barely on my radar. The first trailer changed that, revealing that director Josh Boone was going for a horror movie vibe, with a plot that looks like it was plucked right out of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors. Unfortunately, the film was recently pushed from its April 2018 release date to February 22, 2019. While we wait for the film, here are some fresh tidbits from director Josh Boone.
First and foremost, if you were hoping New Mutants would take its horror movie angle to the extreme and go for an R-rating, I regret to inform you that isn’t the case. Speaking with Empire (via CBM), Boone says the film will not be R, but rather “the hardest PG-13 ever made”:
“This movie is probably the hardest PG-13 ever made. I mean, we’ve pushed it. The horror is pretty dark, but there’s also an emotional core, too. If I can scare you and make you cry: that’s the goal.”
There you have it: Josh Boone wants to make you cry. Boone goes on to reveal that even though New Mutants is technically a superhero film, don’t expect anyone to step into the superhero costumes the characters wear in the comics:
“There are no costumes. That alone makes it different. They can’t be with the other kids at the X-Mansion. They’re too f***ed up. They’ve all killed people, whether intentionally or unintentionally.”
Sounds xtreme. In the film, five young mutants are held against their will in a secret facility. They band together to escape, and then spooky things happen. Again, this is very similar to A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, in which the last surviving Elm Street kids are locked up inside an insane asylum. The kids soon learn that their dreams (and nightmares) have powers, and they’re able to use these abilities to do battle with Freddy Krueger. Personally speaking, I’d much rather have seen New Mutants this year than Deadpool 2, but hey, that’s me.
New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Henry Zaga, Blu Hunt, and Alice Braga. Boone, who also directed The Fault in Our Stars, wrote the script for New Mutants with Knate Lee.

In the wake of the X-Men spin-off movie Gambit losing yet another director today, 20th Century Fox has shifted around the release dates for a bunch of other X-Men-related movie projects they have planned. Read on to find out why New Mutants was pushed to 2019, when you can see Deadpool 2, and when Gambit will (supposedly) hit theaters.
The Hollywood Reporter relays word from 20th Century Fox about its updated schedule for the studio’s superhero entries. The most important update is that New Mutants, the Josh Boone-directed horror film that stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, and Charlie Heaton, has been pushed back from its original April 2018 release date all the way until February 22, 2019. That’s a massive leap, but while huge delays like this can often signal behind the scenes problems with a movie, that may not be the case here. In this instance, THR says that their sources tell them one reason for the change is because Fox actually has too many X-Men movies on their slate and don’t want their to be confusion in some foreign markets, where New Mutants and Deadpool 2 would have been in theaters at the same time.
(I’m not sure I buy that logic, since everything we’ve heard indicates that those two films are totally separate stories that likely wouldn’t cause any confusion if they were in theaters simultaneously…other than people walking up to the counter and asking for “one ticket to the new X-Men movie, please” and the theater employees not knowing which movie to send them to.)
But speaking of Deadpool 2: good news! That film was originally set to be released on June 1, 2018, but now it’ll arrive two weeks earlier, on May 18, 2018. That’s an incredibly smart move on Fox’s part, because it positions Deadpool 2 as opening one week before Disney/Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Since Star Wars movies (even arguably unnecessary ones) are always genuine box office threats, this will at least give Deadpool 2 its time to shine before its audience is cannibalized in its second weekend of release.
As for Gambit, which just lost director Gore Verbinski this morning, the Channing Tatum-led heist thriller has been rescheduled from February 14, 2019 to June 7, 2019. That should give the studio some extra time to hire a director and give that person a fighting chance to, you know, actually have enough time to make the freakin’ movie before that new release date comes barreling toward them. Good luck, new Gambit director…whoever you may be.

The New Mutants director Josh Boone is nothing if not efficient, beginning production for his X-Men spin-off film earlier this summer, releasing a trailer last week, and now revealing that the horror-inspired superhero movie is the first in a planned trilogy.
In the superhero genre, where films are planned years in advance, this is nothing new. But Boone’s pitch for a New Mutants trilogy revolves less around plot ideas than it does genre ideas — with each New Mutants movie taking around a different horror subgenre. So if you’re not on board with the Nightmare on Elm Street meets Stranger Things supernatural horror of the trailer, don’t worry: you’ll have plenty to look forward to.
Boone talked to IGN about how the idea for The New Mutants was conceived, explaining that the majority of the inspiration for the movie came from comics by Bill Sienkiewicz and Chris Claremont, “so it’s very much when New Mutants became dark and surreal and more horror driven.”
While that surrealism was reflected in the first trailer for his film, Boone is eager to explore other subgenres within horror in the next two New Mutants movies, which he revealed was part of his original pitch to 20th Century Fox (via io9):
These are all going to be horror movies, and they’re all be their own distinct kind of horror movies. This is certainly the ‘rubber-reality’ supernatural horror movie. The next one will be a completely different kind of horror movie.
Our take was just go examine the horror genre through comic book movies and make each one its own distinct sort of horror film. Drawing from the big events that we love in the comics.
With horror undergoing a sort of popular renaissance, appealing to more types of audiences than ever (including yours truly), it’s smart for Boone to tap into the horror zeitgeist. It and Get Out are two of 2017’s biggest blockbusters and the success of the high concept slasher Happy Death Day over the weekend suggest that The New Mutants is on to something.
Boone’s genre-focused strategy is an intriguing, and surprisingly never-before-done, approach to superhero movies that may lend credence to the theory that the convoluted nature of X-Men cinematic universe actually allows room for the most creative and audacious individual films or TV shows. If Boone can pull off a self-contained horror film with each of his New Mutants films, his trilogy could be a breath of fresh air in the rapidly expanding (and often confusing) X-Men universe.
The New Mutants is set to open in theaters on April 13, 2018.
