Lara Kollab, 27, a recent graduate of the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, was recently fired from her position as an Internal Medicine Resident at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, after it emerged that she had been fanning anti-Semitic sentiment on Twitter for at least the last six years.

Kollab started her job at the clinic in July 2018 and was fired in September, over a series of spiteful postings that were brought to the attention of her supervisors, Yeshiva World News reported, citing hospital employees.

Four months after Kollab was sacked, the tweets that cost her the job have resurfaced and gone viral.

Canary Mission, a controversial website that collects dossiers on pro-Palestinian activists and groups, has published Kollab’s selected tweets from 2012 to 2017, when she still was a medical student.

In her messages, as cited by the Canary Mission, Kollab repeatedly calls on followers to “destroy the homes of the Jews” and urges Arab nations to unite to “destroy the terrorist nazi state of #israel.”

In one of the most disturbing tweets from January 2, 2012, Kollab, using the @ellekay_ alias, apparently jokes about intentionally giving her Jewish patients the wrong medication.

“Hahha ewww..ill purposely give all the yahood the wrong meds…,” she tweeted, in response to a follower, as cited by the YWN.

Stopping short of denying the Holocaust altogether, Kollab took aim at Jews for using it as an excuse to enact policies similar to what their ancestors had endured in the hands of their torturers.

“On Holocaust Remembrance Day, I feel for the victims whose deaths are sickeningly exploited to perpetuate ethnic cleansing today,” she tweeted on April 8, 2013.

Touching a sore spot for all Jews, the young doctor drew parallels between the early 20th century German Nazi regime and the recent government of Israel in its crackdown on the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which promotes various forms of boycott against Israel.

“… It’s funny how zionists are trying to compare BDS with the Holocaust. If anything, you’re the nazis in the situation now,” she tweeted on April 28, 2012.

Kollab argued that Israeli leaders’ insistence that Israel is first and foremost a state for Jews is similar to the Nazis’ racial ideology.

“Tell me what makes Israel’s ‘we must remain a Jewish state’ obsession any less disturbing than Hitler’s obsession with a pure white nation,” she wrote in a tweet on October 20, 2013, long before the controversial Jewish nation-state law was passed last summer.

Despite her incendiary rhetoric, Kollab, in a tweet from April 2012, denied that she bears a grudge against Jews, noting that it is “murderous zionazis” that she wants to get rid of for good.

“Palestinians will not try to expel all Jews. We have no problem with Jews, just murderous zionazis.”

Kollab also fed into the popular conspiracy theory that all media are controlled by Jews, arguing that people in the West have been blind-sided by Zionist propaganda.

“How can we be angry at misguided ppl in the West? The media and schools are the most powerful tools- both are full of Zionist propaganda,” she tweeted on February 27, 2013.

She also made a dig at the US for its support of Israel, in a tweet from October 7, 2011: “The US spent 1.4 trillion dollars on WW2 to defeat Hitler’s Nazi regime and has probably spent more funding Israel’s Nazi regime.”

As of now, the original tweets have been deleted and are no longer accessible.

After Kollab’s anti-Zionist rants caught the attention of the wider web, the Cleveland Clinic issued a statement, saying that her contract had been terminated in September 2018, and that her views do not represent those of the clinic.

“In no way do these beliefs reflect those of our organization. We fully embrace diversity, inclusion and a culture of safety and respect across our entire health system,” the clinic said, in a statement to YWN.

#MeToo’s Alyssa Milano accused of hypocrisy over links to ‘Sharia law-supporting’ Muslim activist https://briefnews.eu/metoos-alyssa-milano-accused-of-hypocrisy-over-links-to-sharia-law-supporting-muslim-activist/ https://briefnews.eu/metoos-alyssa-milano-accused-of-hypocrisy-over-links-to-sharia-law-supporting-muslim-activist/#respond Mon, 22 Oct 2018 19:42:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/metoos-alyssa-milano-accused-of-hypocrisy-over-links-to-sharia-law-supporting-muslim-activist/

Actress Alyssa Milano has been asked to disavow her friend and fellow #MeToo movement supporter Linda Sarsour, a controversial Muslim women’s rights activist who has been accused of antisemitism and support for Sharia law.

Speaking on a panel at the Politicon conference in Los Angeles, Milano was confronted by conservative journalist Laura Loomer over her friendship with Sarsour.

“You are friends with Linda Sarsour, both of you ladies have positioned yourselves as speakers and representatives of the #MeToo movement,” Loomer asked Milano.

“I want to ask you right now to disavow Linda Sarsour because she is a supporter of Sharia law. And under Sharia law, women are oppressed, women are forced to wear a hijab. My question is, will you please disavow her because she is advocating for Sharia law.”

Milano didn’t seem very interested in either disavowing Sarsour or answering the question — and as Loomer was immediately confronted by two women who attempted to usher her out of the room, the actress responded to say simply that Sarsour is “not” an advocate of Sharia law and thanked Loomer for the question.

As Loomer exited the room, Milano spoke up to say that if people “don’t know how to talk to one another we’ll never evolve.” When Loomer shot back to say she had just asked “a polite question,” Milano complained that the question had been asked in a “very distinct tone” which seemingly precluded her from giving an answer.

Sarsour, a former executive director of the Arab American Association of New York and one of the leaders of the Women’s March, has made statements in the past which seem to support the idea of Sharia, or Islamic law.

In 2014, the Palestinian-American activist said that Saudi Arabia’s maternity leave policies puts the US “to shame” in a tweet that seemed to imply that a Saudi ban on women being allowed to drive was not really an important issue in comparison.

“You’ll know when you’re living under Sharia Law if suddenly all your loans and credit cards become interest free. Sounds nice, doesn’t it?” she tweeted in 2015.

Claims of Sarsour’s anti-Semitism appear to stem from her links to Louis Farrakhan, the highly controversial leader of the Nation of Islam, who lost his ‘verified’ status on Twitter earlier this year after posting a link to a speech in which he claimed to be “unmasking the Satanic Jew and the Synagogue of Satan”.

Farrakhan has also made numerous anti-white comments, including saying white people “deserve to die,” and came out against interracial marriage, arguing that “you can’t integrate with wickedness if you want righteousness.” Sarsour spoke at a 2015 rally organized by Farrakhan.

In 2017, singer Courtney Love tweeted that she wouldn’t support anything that is “being led by an anti-Semetic (sic) terrorist” who is “using feminism as a tool to promote her radicalism.” She also tweeted directly to Sarsour, calling her a “vile disgrace to women and all mankind.”

Milano’s refusal to answer the legitimate question about Sarsour’s past comments –whatever its tone– leaves a lingering question; why she is all about women’s equality and safety in Hollywood, but isn’t prepared to condemn those who appear to support oppression of women in other countries?

Are the Muslim and Christian Right Natural Allies? He Says Yes https://briefnews.eu/are-the-muslim-and-christian-right-natural-allies-he-says-yes/ https://briefnews.eu/are-the-muslim-and-christian-right-natural-allies-he-says-yes/#respond Fri, 19 Oct 2018 14:46:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/are-the-muslim-and-christian-right-natural-allies-he-says-yes/

He often wears suits, has thick glasses and when he talks, he starts out in an informal, teenager-like tone but then quickly recovers into academic language. Othman El Hammouchi is on his way to becoming one of Belgium’s most prominent philosophers, but he’s still an 18-year-old college student. “My choice to study mathematics had nothing to do with politics,” El Hammouchi laughs when I ask him about his choice of study, amid his first-year exams at the Free University of Brussels. “I’m just interested in certain questions and how they relate to things like the relativity theory and Kantian philosophy.”

When he was 17, El Hammouchi won an essay contest for high school students and in his own words entered the “circuit” of writing opinion pieces, doing interviews and giving talks. Since then he has been featured in most of Belgium’s newspapers, and one of the country’s most important philosophers, Etienne Vermeersch, called him “brilliant.”

At first sight, his conservatism seems to be quite traditional. “For me, conservatism is a complete world view that places emphasis on traditional structures such as religion, marriage and hierarchy,” El Hammouchi says. Yet at the same time, he moves away from commonly held positions on the right, such as doubting the existence of man-made climate change. “As a conservative, you shouldn’t deny science,” he says.

The traditional marriage was a sort of contract in which the woman exchanged sex for stability. Yet the sexual revolution undermined that.

Othman El Hammouchi

His most obvious clash with today’s right? El Hammouchi is a religious Muslim at a time when European conservatives are moving toward hard-line positions on identity, often critical of Islam. It’s not just far-right groups. A leader of the conservative New Flemish Alliance, Belgium’s biggest party, Bart De Wever this year told a local newspaper: “Muslims want a place in the public space, in education, with their external religious symbols. That causes tension.”

This kind of rhetoric, argues El Hammouchi, means “conservatives in Belgium are throwing away the votes of 7 percent of the population who are Muslim.” He rather argues for a “conservative grand alliance” between Christians and Muslims. “One of my goals is to take away this irrational hatred toward Islam,” he says. His work has elicited little reaction from conservative politicians, but recently he joined Doorbraak, a prominent publication in conservative circles, as a regular contributor.

When I ask him what he is currently reading — besides his exam coursework, of course — he rattles down a lengthy list of philosophy books. He mentions Dutch (and strongly atheist) philosopher Herman Philipse’s God in the Age of Science? A Critique of Religious Reason and Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid, a 1979 book by Douglas Hofstadter about cognition and machines. But Immanuel Kant “was truly the greatest,” El Hammouchi says of the German philosopher behind Critique of Pure Reason.

El Hammouchi grew up in Vilvoorde, a small city in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking area of Belgium, right outside of Brussels. He credits his “orthodox Muslim family” for his conservatism. Said Bataray, a pundit who knows El Hammouchi, says his friend’s focus on the family is all-encompassing. “Othman is a good aspiring philosopher, but he is also a bit sheltered,” Bataray says. “He was always the smartest in his class, came from a good family and encountered little discrimination so far in his life.”

El Hammouchi’s political thinking is difficult to pin down — and evolving, as one would expect of an 18-year-old. He might critique contradictions in European conservatism while at other times taking hard-line positions out of step with progressive Belgian society. His socially conservative views about gender and sexuality have already caused controversy. “The traditional marriage was a sort of contract in which the woman exchanged sex for stability,” he says. “Yet the sexual revolution undermined that. And I don’t think women benefited. Men can now do whatever they want.”

When he published a fiercely antiabortion article in which he compared abortion to murder (not so common in European conservatism, compared to its U.S. counterpart), it yielded a strong counterreaction. Writer Heleen Debruyne called him pompous, adding: “I could ignore this little philosopher, but if history teaches us anything, it’s that we should keep guarding the social rights we conquered.” Meanwhile, social media commenters questioned how much media attention should still be put on the provocative views of El Hammouchi.

In Europe, May 1968 has become shorthand for a range of progressive movements active during the ’60s, which culminated in a massive wave of strikes and riots in Paris. Belgium also saw riots at that time, mainly in the student city of Leuven, where protests by Dutch-speaking students snowballed into a broader movement against traditional hierarchies such as the church, patriarchy and traditional politics. To European conservatives, it unleashed individualism, irresponsibility and identity politics.

Gui Polspoel is a journalist who was a student in Leuven during that time who recently debated El Hammouchi. “He reads a lot of books and philosophers, yet he fails to truly think,” Polspoel says. “He just quotes them but remains stuck in his own dogmas. May ’68 was for me a movement of emancipation and thinking outside accepted frames. Maybe he should use more of that spirit himself.”

Bataray points out that El Hammouchi’s heterodox thought can hardly be considered rigid. “He can think outside of the box; in some areas, he is very advanced and has extremely interesting ideas,” Bataray says. “Yet in others, he is so cramped it occasionally gets difficult.”

El Hammouchi is staying busy as his public profile continues to grow, writing for Doorbraak and working on a wide-ranging book. Yet he is still a student. Grand alliances notwithstanding, for the moment he still has exams to pass.

Muslim family of 13 convert to Hindu to pressure police after relative’s ‘murder’ https://briefnews.eu/muslim-family-of-13-convert-to-hindu-to-pressure-police-after-relatives-murder/ https://briefnews.eu/muslim-family-of-13-convert-to-hindu-to-pressure-police-after-relatives-murder/#respond Wed, 03 Oct 2018 12:10:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/muslim-family-of-13-convert-to-hindu-to-pressure-police-after-relatives-murder/

A Muslim man living in India was so desperate to have the death of his son properly probed by police that he and 12 members of his family converted to Hinduism in the hope it would prompt adequate support from authorities.

Akhtar Ali, from the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, told reporters he and his family converted to Hinduism when the “unnatural death” of his 28-year-old son was treated by police as suicide.

Ali, a resident of Badarkha village in Baghpat district, and his family submitted an affidavit on Monday confirming their conversion to Hinduism was voluntary. The next day the family performed various Hindu rituals before officially changing their names.

State chief of Yuva Hindu Vahini (Bharat), Shaukendra Khokhar, said that the family had pleaded with police not to rule out any line of inquiry but despite this authorities allegedly still concluded Ali’s son, Gulhasan, had taken his own life.

Ali said his son was murdered on July 28 and his body “was hanged to make it look like a case of suicide,” the Times of India reports.

“I approached police a number of times and pleaded with my community members to testify in our favour, but nobody came forward.”

He added his family “hopes to get justice now” that they’ve converted.

Police contested reports of officers being apathetic to the family’s situation and said they will not be able to say “anything with certainty” until the autopsy report is reviewed by a medical-legal expert.

District magistrate Rishirendra Kumar said the family conversion was nothing but a “gimmick” to pressure authorities into conducting investigations according to their own will.

US human rights allegations against China incite Muslim extremism – govt paper https://briefnews.eu/us-human-rights-allegations-against-china-incite-muslim-extremism-govt-paper/ https://briefnews.eu/us-human-rights-allegations-against-china-incite-muslim-extremism-govt-paper/#respond Sun, 02 Sep 2018 03:37:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-human-rights-allegations-against-china-incite-muslim-extremism-govt-paper/ The recent request by some US lawmakers to sanction Chinese officials over their alleged abuse of the Muslim minority in Xinjiang can be seen by extremists as a call to action, China’s state-run tabloid said.

The Global Times, an influential Chinese tabloid, published by the Communist Party’s Peoples’ Daily newspaper, warned Washington against applying its “west-centered” value system to the situation in Xinjiang, an autonomous territory in northwestern China and a home to Uyghurs, China’s largest Muslim minority group.

The region has grappled with ethnic violence over the years, with a series of riots between Uyghurs and Han Chinese that broke out in July 2009 and left nearly 200 people dead and hundreds injured. In recent years, the violence has subsided, with critics of the Chinese government accusing it of a massive crackdown on dissent. According to a recent UN panel report, that included placing some 1 million Uyghurs in “counterextremism centers” and even more in “reeducation camps.”

In its editorial on Saturday, the Global Times attributed unrest in the turbulent region to “external factors,” accusing the US of adding fuel to the fire of ethnic tension. On Wednesday, a group of US lawmakers, led by Senator Marco Rubio and Representative Chris Smith, co-chair of the Congressional Executive Commission on China, penned a letter to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, urging them to slap senior Chinese officials with sanctions under the Magnitsky Act. Rubio and Smith believe the officials to be responsible for “arbitrary detention, torture, egregious restrictions on religious practice and culture” and other alleged mistreatment of Uyghurs.

The Magnitsky Act, initially passed by the US government in 2012 to punish those it considered to be behind Russian accountant Sergey Magnitsky’s death in a Russian jail, was expanded in 2016 ostensibly to fight corruption and human rights violations on a global scale.

“Western accusations of Xinjiang governance seriously misled the extremists, making them believe they were launching religious Jihad and won sympathy and support from Western and international society,” the tabloid stated, calling out the West for disregarding the situation on the ground with its “empty statements about human rights.”

“Such empty talk inspires extremists, which meets the purposes of some Western politicians trying to undermine the governance achievements in Xinjiang and push the region into turmoil.”

Unlike the one promoted by the West, the Chinese idea of human rights is “rooted in the reality of Xinjiang and supported by most developing countries,” the tabloid argues, noting that the overriding goal of the region’s administration is to keep it from descending into chaos again, which is in the interests of most of its residents as well.

“Whether Xinjiang governance abuses human rights must be judged by whether its results safeguard the interests of the majority in the region,” the article stated.

“No external force is allowed to make decisions for them. They have the support of the Chinese people,” the publication concludes.

Former US diplomat Jim Jatras believes that while human rights issues are a real thing for China, Washington seeks to exploit them for its own ends.

“There are violations of certain standards of human rights that the Chinese may engage in,” he said. “That is double the case when the country feels that it has an insurgency within its borders. I’m not saying that these violations may not be taking place, what I’m saying is that these are probably being exaggerated very selectively for protocol purposes by people in Washington.”

One possible explanation is that possible sanctions are another avenue of economic attack against China, said Jatras, and in particular its ambitious Belt and Road initiative which aims to spread trade connections throught the entire Eurasian continent.

“I don’t know how far people in Washington are willing to take it, but no doubt it’s intended precisely for the purpose of disrupting the Belt and Road initiative,” Jatras said.

  • China is accused of detaining up to 1 million Uighur Muslims in internment camps in the western region of Xinjiang.
  • Two Uighurs who had been inside those camps have told BBC Newsnight about the physical and psychological torture that goes on there.
  • One described being shackled to a chair, deprived of sleep, and beaten by authorities in the camp.
  • Another said he saw seeing people he used to know look like they had “lost their souls.”

New details have emerged of the re-education camps in which China has been accused of imprisoning up to 1 million Uighurs, a majority-Muslim ethnic minority, in the country’s western region of Xinjiang.

Political prisoners in those camps are both physically and mentally tortured, two eyewitnesses of the camp told BBC Newsnight in a documentary aired on Thursday night.

Australian sports commentator and former Aussie rules football player Sam Newman has been lashed on social media following his comments on Muslim migrants, who he said have “colonized” the continent.

Talking on his weekly Australian Football League (AFL) podcast on Wednesday, Newman slammed the league for staging a show of solidarity last week in response to an inflammatory speech in parliament by Senator Fraser Anning.

The lawmaker had called for a ban on Muslim immigration and a return to the White Australia policy.

Last Friday, the AFL’s highest-profile Muslim players Adam Saad and Bachar Houli hugged each other in a display of multicultural inclusion before the coin toss ahead of the Essendon-Richmond clash in Melbourne.

“They [Muslims] don’t generally nationalize, they colonize,” Newman said, adding that the Muslim community doesn’t share common values with Australian society.

“There are 600,000 Muslims in Australia, they share no common interest with what we’re on about. They have no common values, they preach to a different, deity, god. This has been a huge problem in Europe and it’s beginning to be a huge problem in America,” he said.

His inflammatory comments triggered public outcry on social media, with many users accusing the former AFL star of racism and discrimination.

Some internet users wrote that they “don’t share Newman’s common values,” adding that Newman had “confirmed his bigotry” by attacking Muslim Australians.

However, some people supported Newman’s views on the Muslim community, saying that he and Anning were right.

Can You Name the Muslim World’s First Secular Democracy? https://briefnews.eu/can-you-name-the-muslim-worlds-first-secular-democracy/ https://briefnews.eu/can-you-name-the-muslim-worlds-first-secular-democracy/#respond Mon, 13 Aug 2018 05:04:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/can-you-name-the-muslim-worlds-first-secular-democracy/

The exotic, cosmopolitan city buzzed with activity, its multicultural lifeblood driven in part by a recent oil boom and swept up in intellectual thought and political activism. Petro barons lounged in newly built mansions outside the Old City, where merchants traded in local wares, shopkeepers served mouthwatering culinary delights and residents shuffled through narrow alleys to and from centuries-old houses of worship.

Midcentury Tehran? Caracas in the 1970s? Try Baku during the waning days of World War I.

Though located on the southern fringes of the Russian Empire, the commercial and cultural outpost that now serves as the capital of Azerbaijan wasn’t as sleepy as one might expect for an isolated city on the shores of the Caspian Sea and sequestered behind the towering Caucasus Mountains. In fact, in the brief moment between the collapse of imperial Russia and the establishment of the Soviet Union, a unique set of circumstances here gave rise to something perhaps even more surprising: what local historians say was the Muslim world’s first functioning secular democracy.

If you thought Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s Republic of Turkey — founded in 1923 — claimed that title, welcome to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) of 1918–20.

Though short-lived, the ADR arose in a region of former empires, kingdoms and autocracies to set an impressive precedent. Embracing inclusive parliamentary politics, empowering women and ethnic minorities and promoting quality education, it not only laid the foundation for Azerbaijan but also carved out its own place in history. “Most important, it was a victory of the local secular intelligentsia over the old elite,” says Altay Goyushov, a professor of history at Baku State University.

Located at a strategic crossroads where the Persian, Turkic and European worlds met, the collection of khanates that came under Russian rule was inherently multiethnic and multiconfessional by the turn of the 20th century, populated by Sunnis, Shiites, Armenians, Russians, Poles and many others. Yet a core Azeri intelligentsia — graduates of Russian educational institutes who increasingly came to identify with European-style social democracy — was also crystallizing around the idea of a state governed by the sort of post-colonial institutions that were sprouting up across Europe. It provided a “logical conclusion,” Goyushov says, to the transformation of Azerbaijani society during the 19th century.

[The Azerbaijan republic] was quite progressive, not only in regard to the new East but even to Europe.

Zaur Gasimov, research fellow, Orient-Institut Istanbul

With help from the Ottoman Empire’s army, these elites, represented in large part by Mammad Amin Rasulzadeh and his Musavat Party, seized the moment to establish the ADR, whose government was then divided into separate branches and featured a Parliament stocked with a wide range of nationalities, from ethnic Azeris to Jews, and political forces, from nationalists and liberal democrats to Islamists and leftists. Other key pillars of the new Azerbaijan was Baku State University, whose establishment in 1919 marked the birth of a new intelligentsia, as well as women’s suffrage. “It was quite progressive, not only in regard to the new East but even to Europe,” says Zaur Gasimov, a research fellow at the Orient-Institut Istanbul.

In a September 1919 speech, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson reportedly recalled encountering Azerbaijani delegates at the Paris Peace Conference earlier that year. Although he didn’t know their origin upon first meeting them, he was clearly struck: “I was talking to men who talked the same language that I did in respect of ideas, in respect of conceptions of liberty, in respect of conceptions of right and justice.”

Despite its lofty accomplishments, however, the ADR wasn’t destined to last. Unprepared for such a wide-ranging political experiment, Azerbaijani society was woefully bereft of technocrats and other experts well-versed in functional bureaucracy. Under Russian rule, neither Muslims nor Jews were allowed to serve in the military, which forced the ADR government to cobble together an army of foreign hires and novices. That’s in addition to territorial conflicts with neighbors and the weight of international powers vying for influence over the greater region. All this made Azerbaijan ripe for occupation by the Red Army in 1920, according to Gasimov. “Within a couple of days,” he says, “they occupied the whole country.”

Yet the republic’s memory lives on, even if under somewhat precarious circumstances. Azerbaijan continued its nation-building project as part of the Soviet Union, though communist rule proved heavy-handed. The Soviet collapse in 1991 returned independence to Azerbaijan. In spirit — and certainly if you ask nationally conscious Azeris — it’s the logical continuation of the ADR. But for Azerbaijan’s autocratic dynasty, which has ruled the country since the early 1990s, things aren’t so simple.

According to Goyushov, the personality cult carefully built in recent years around patriarch Heydar Aliyev, whose son Ilham took over after the death of his father in 2003, has taken precedence over the memories of the ADR, which are quietly commemorated by the authorities but not celebrated with enthusiasm. “On one hand, they cannot completely deny it,” Goyushov says, “but at the same time, they would like to diminish the role of the republic in general Azerbaijani history.” At its most cynical, Goyushov adds, the current government hoists the ADR as an example of the downfalls of participatory democracy.

Politicized or not, the fleeting republic proves at least one vital point: Political innovation sometimes comes from where you least expect it.
