FSB officers will spend 24 years in a high-security prison for being a member of a gang of rogue law enforcers, which for years terrorized businessmen and guest workers in Russia’s Tyumen, killing at least ten.

Four officers from the FSB (Federal Security Service) and the police put together a gang to lure cash from shady local businessmen, involved in money laundering, instead of arresting them.

The men, who were assigned to protect the law, resorted to the most violent and heinous crimes in pursuit of their goal. The so-called “Killer gang from the FSB,” which was active in the Siberian city between 2008 and 2016, has the blood of at least ten people on their hands.

The scheme they used was cunning and merciless. The dirty law enforcers sent businessmen anonymous threats and then offered their protection services. In order to show off the results of their work to the clients, they abducted and murdered guest workers from Central Asia, whom they dressed in fancy suits to look like serious menacing people.

The gang also didn’t shy away from a violent robbery. Shortly before New Year holidays in 2008, they broke into the home of one uncooperative entrepreneur to snatch his cash, gold, and expensive watches. The property owner was put in a car, taken to the woods and shot dead there.

In 2015 they murdered two taxi drivers – just because they needed vehicles to be used in their future crimes.

The rogue officers were arrested early last year after being betrayed by one of their own members, who apparently experienced a pang of guilt. After the killing of another migrant, FSB lieutenant, Aleksey Korotkov, anonymously tipped his colleagues, the honest ones, on the location of the body.

The uncovering of the gang’s activities caused a major uproar and saw several high-profile firings in the Tumen law enforcement, which included the head of the local FSB branch.

Korotkov became the first gang member to be sentenced in the shocking case. On Wednesday, a military court in Yekaterinburg handed him 24 years in a maximum security prison and a fine of 500,000 rubles ($ 7,500). The man was also deprived of his lieutenant rank.

The former officer was found guilty of seven murders as well as theft, robbery, carjacking, fraud, and hooliganism. He initially faced life in prison but received a milder sentence due to full repentance and cooperation with the investigators.

In his final word at the court, Korotkov asked the relatives and friends of his victims to forgive him, saying: “I fully acknowledge my actions and the consequences I’ll face.”

His other accomplice, Aleksandr Kobylin, who was a martial arts trainer for the FBS officers, is currently awaiting his trial.

The gang’s leader, FSB sniper, Sergey Gilev, committed suicide in a pre-dentation facility by cutting his own throat. Former policeman, Sergey Zazuliya, remains the only dirty cop still at large.

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) – The trial of two women charged with the murder of the estranged half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un will continue, a Malaysian judge ruled on Thursday, adding that the evidence was insufficient to prove it was a political assassination.

Indonesian Siti Aisyah and Doan Thi Huong, a Vietnamese, face the death penalty on charges of murdering Kim JongNam by smearing his face with VX, a nerve agent banned by the United Nations, at a Kuala Lumpur airport on Feb. 13 last year.

Philippines Foreign Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano called the arrest a “critical first step in our quest for justice for Joanna,” and confirmed that President Rodrigo Duterte has been informed of the news.

Meanwhile, Assaf’s wife, a Syrian national by the name of Mona, is also a suspect in Demafelis’ death. She remains at large and is believed to be in Syria.

Duterte, who has railed against the treatment of Filipinos living and working in the Arab world, has vowed to bring justice to the family of Demafelis. He has also threatened to extend the employment ban for Filipino workers to other countries, saying the government is working to “find out the places where we deploy Filipinos and our countrymen suffer brutal treatment and human degradation.”

Duterte has also said that a list of both reported and unreported cases of mistreatment of Filipino migrant workers would be prepared, calling the project a “long, long task.” The country’s Senate began an inquiry into the deaths and abuse of Filipino workers on Wednesday.

As many as 10 million Filipinos work abroad, with more than two million of those working in Kuwait and other Middle Eastern countries such as Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. They are often employed as domestic helpers, construction workers, engineers, and nurses.

The death of Kate Steinle figured prominently in the debate on immigration, with President Donald Trump referencing it as an argument for a crackdown.

On Thursday afternoon, Jose Ines Garcia Zarate, 45, was found not guilty of murdering Steinle, 32. Zarate, previously identified as Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, admitted to firing a single shot from a .40 caliber Sig Sauer at Steinle as she walked with her father on a San Francisco pier on July 1, 2015. He claimed he fired accidentally.

Defense attorneys successfully argued that Garcia Zarate has no history of violence and that the shooting was an accident. They said that Garcia Zarate found the handgun wrapped in a cloth under his seat on the pier and that the gun accidentally discharged as he was handling it. The shot then ricocheted off of the concrete ground, 12 to 15 feet away from Zarate, and then traveled at least 78 feet before hitting Steinle in the back.

Garcia Zarate was found guilty on one count of felon in possession of a firearm.

He had already had a record of seven felony convictions, including drug charges, and had been deported from the US five times before re-entering and killing Steinle. 

Local authorities had released Garcia Zarate despite a request from federal officials to keep him in custody because of his immigration status, according to a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by Steinle’s family. The Steinle family has filed lawsuits against the city of San Francisco, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Matt Gonzalez, a public defender who represented Garcia Zarate, told reporters that the verdict deserves respect and reflection, not knee-jerk criticism. He specifically mentioned President Donald Trump, who he anticipated would tweet about the verdict, telling the president to consider that he himself is under investigation, referring to the probe into alleged Russia collusion in the 2016 election.

Gonzalez also mentioned Vice President Mike Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions, saying, “let me just remind them that they are themselves under investigation by a pres prosec in Washington, DC.”

Gonzalez stressed that his client, like Trump and anyone on trial in the US justice system, has the protections of presumed innocence and the reasonable doubt standard.

Gonzalez also told Fox News that “the reality is we have 300 million guns in this country,” and said 50 accidental shootings happen everyday.

Steinle’s murder became flashpoint in a national debate on immigration and “sanctuary cities.” During his election campaign, Trump threatened to deport every one of the estimated 11 million immigrants who live in the United States illegally.

Four days after his election, Trump said in an interview on 60 Minutes he would “get the people that are criminal and have criminal records – gang members, drug dealers, we have a lot of these people, probably 
2 million, it could be even 3 million – we are getting them out of our country… Or we are going to incarcerate.”

In June, the House of Representatives passed HR 3004, known “Kate’s Law,” to impose more severe punishment for those reentering the country after being deported. The vote took place two days before the anniversary of Steinle’s killing.

Steinle’s murder was used by the Trump administration to attack the “threat” of “sanctuary cities,” a term used to refer to areas which refuse to assist federal authorities in detaining and deporting immigrants.

“San Francisco, and cities like it, are putting the well-being of criminal aliens before the safety of our citizens, and those city officials who authored these policies have the blood of dead Americans on their hands,” the White House said in April.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is attempting to force sanctuary cities to assist federal authorities. He recently issued letters to 29 sanctuary state jurisdictions, threatening to withhold millions in federal funding if they do not comply with 8 US Code Section 1373, the federal statute regulating local cooperation with federal immigration officials.

The DC answer to the Avengers has not been having a good week following a disappointing box office opening weekend and yet another negative score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Nevertheless Justice League’s promotion in China appears to be fighting back against the film’s much more successful main rival, Marvel’s Avengers.

Spotted by a fan on Reddit, a poster showing Marvel superheroes being brutally killed by the Justice League has been used by many Chinese cinemas.

This also includes a video hosting website called iQiyi, who promote the film officially, and ticketing app Wanda Cinema – the country’s biggest cinema chain.

The Reddit user wrote: “The graphic poster includes Deadpool on Aquaman’s pitchfork, Batman holding a cut-off head of Thor, Wolverine being stabbed to death, the Flash stepping on Captain America’s head, Superman squishing Ant-Man, and a disembodied Ironman lying on the ground.”

While iQiyi has since replaced the doctored image, the poster still appears in many cinemas,

Yet despite the creative advertising and the film showing on 21,000 screens in China, Justice League has made around just $ 54 million so far according to Forbes.

Just how badly Justice League will flop remains to be seen, as does the effect it will have on planned future DC Extended Universe movies.

Even Ben Affleck has hinted at leaving the franchise, but can it be saved?

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) – Texas executed a man on Thursday convicted of murdering a prison guard in 1999, after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a last-minute appeal to spare his life despite arguments by his lawyers that he was innocent.

Robert Pruett, 38, was put to death by lethal injection at the state’s death chamber in Huntsville and pronounced dead at 6:46 p.m. (2346 GMT), the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said. He was the 544th person executed in Texas since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976, the most of any state. It was Texas’ sixth execution this year.

About an hour before the scheduled execution, the Supreme Court said it rejected Pruett’s petition. The decision issued by Justice Samuel Alito did not provide a reason.

Pruett, sent to prison as a teenager and serving a 99-year sentence as an accessory to a murder committed by his father, was convicted of killing prison guard Daniel Nagle by stabbing him repeatedly with a shank.

Prosecutors said he murdered the corrections officer because Nagle had reprimanded him for carrying a sandwich into the recreation yard. Torn pieces of the disciplinary report on Pruett were found near Nagle’s body.

“No witnesses testified they observed the attack, and no physical evidence connected Robert Pruett to the murder,” lawyers for the inmate wrote in their petition to the Supreme Court filed on Tuesday.

They said Pruett, who has maintained his innocence, was convicted on the unreliable testimony of prison informants and neither Pruett’s fingerprints nor DNA material were found on the torn report. Lawyers had also asked the state to release the shank and Nagle’s clothes for DNA testing after inconclusive tests took place in 2000.

In a legal filing with the Supreme Court, the state of Texas said: “Pruett has raised nothing new that casts any doubt on his guilt.”

They added he had raised the same concerns before in previous filings and had been rejected.

“His claims are based on pure speculation and do not demonstrate his factual innocence,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and others said in the filing submitted to the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
