The piece Charlie was discussing was from today’s national newspapers, and he spotted a positive story.

He said: “On the theme of the outdoors, some of the negative stuff about people being outdoors was about the litter, and too many people getting together.

“On a slightly lighter note in relation to people going outside – the countryside code, which is a good thing, all the stuff people maybe know about, like shutting a gate and keeping your dog under control, don’t litter – in amongst all the advice now they’re talking about part of the new code.

“Which is to make other people feel more comfortable – the idea is that you should smile more. Some people feel as though the countryside is not a place for them so you can do something and make a difference.”

Naga Munchetty’s message of defiance in BBC impartiality row: ‘We’re not robots or idiots’ https://briefnews.eu/naga-munchettys-message-of-defiance-in-bbc-impartiality-row-were-not-robots-or-idiots/ https://briefnews.eu/naga-munchettys-message-of-defiance-in-bbc-impartiality-row-were-not-robots-or-idiots/#respond Fri, 19 Mar 2021 14:18:34 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/naga-munchettys-message-of-defiance-in-bbc-impartiality-row-were-not-robots-or-idiots/

The BBC Breakfast host apologised yesterday for liking “offensive” tweets about a Government minister’s video call backdrop featuring the Union flag. While interviewing Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick, Ms Munchetty and co-host Charlie Stayt laughed after commenting on the flag. Mr Stayt said: “I think your flag is not up to standard size, Government interview measurements. “I think it’s just a little bit small, but that’s your department really. It’s just a thought.”

Ms Munchetty then apologised on Twitter for liking tweets referencing the interview that she said were “offensive”.

She said: “I ‘liked’ tweets today that were offensive in nature about the use of the British flag as a backdrop in a Government interview this morning. I have since removed these ‘likes’.

“This does not represent the views of me or the BBC. I apologise for any offence taken.”

Ms Munchetty previously discussed BBC impartiality following comments she made about Donald Trump in 2019.

The US President at the time was accused of racism after he told a number of female Democratic Party candidates to “go back” where they came from.

Nancy Pelosi labelled the comments “xenophobic”, with Kamala Harris also saying: “Let’s call the President’s racist attack exactly what it is: un-American.”

Ms Munchetty condemned Mr Trump’s comments on BBC Breakfast at the time, and was originally found to have breached editorial conduct rules.

However, the decision was eventually reversed.

Discussing the row a year later, Ms Munchetty said newsreaders are “not robots” and “not idiots”.

She said: “I sit on that sofa as a woman, as a person of colour from an ethnic minority who is not a robot.

“We’re talking about Black Lives Matter now, we’re talking about George Floyd. We are not robots. We are not there to simply, blankly, read the news. That isn’t our job.

“We are judging what viewers need to know and we’re informing them as neutrally but with insight as much as we can. We are impartial but we’re not idiots.”

Following her comments on the Women’s Prize for Fiction podcast, she echoed the sentiments in an interview with British Vogue.

She continued: “One of the balancing acts of being a Breakfast presenter is being comfortable enough to show who you are and your personality.

“You have to show empathy. You cannot sit there and be a robot on that sofa.

“And I do stand by it. It is not OK to use offensive language, or to skirt around offensive language, to make a point or get attention.”

Ms Munchetty opened up about racist abuse she and her family had received in the past.

She said: “My parents have always been absolutely professional and caring as nurses. They came to a country that wasn’t always welcoming to people of colour, to be the best they could be. And they were told to go home all the time.”

But Ms Munchetty said “very positive things” had come out of the Trump incident.

She concluded: “What it has done is raise an uncomfortable conversation that needed to be raised.”

Asked whether the BBC was institutionally racist, Ms Munchetty said: “I’m going to turn this on its head: find me a large organisation, and find me an employee from a minority group who feels they are able to bring their true self to work today.

“I don’t think you’ll be able to.”

Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty were back on the BBC Breakfast sofa today and the conversation focused mostly on the news that pubs have been allowed to reopen today with strict social distancing in place. However, many viewers were left completely distracted by Naga’s appearance.

A couple of weeks ago, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the biggest lessening of lockdown rules since it was enforced back in March.

From today, all non-essential shops, pubs, and restaurants can open with strict rules in place and thousands of people have been preparing for this reopening.

To mark the day, Charlie and Naga spoke to a number of pub and hairdressers staff, some of whom had been open since 12:01am this morning.

However, fans were left baffled today by Naga Munchetty’s appearance and took to Twitter to discuss.

Regular viewers of BBC Breakfast also know that Charlie Stayt has been itching for a haircut since the beginning of lockdown.

Naga has been teasing him ever since, and today that hit its peak as it was finally ok for him to get his barnet sorted.

However, Charlie seemed quite happy with his new lockdown locks and quickly moved the conversation on when it was brought up.

But it seems viewers were split on whether or not he should keep it or not.

Naga Munchetty’s appearance distracts BBC Breakfast viewers: ‘Don’t get me started!’ https://briefnews.eu/naga-munchettys-appearance-distracts-bbc-breakfast-viewers-dont-get-me-started/ https://briefnews.eu/naga-munchettys-appearance-distracts-bbc-breakfast-viewers-dont-get-me-started/#respond Sat, 27 Jun 2020 19:52:37 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/naga-munchettys-appearance-distracts-bbc-breakfast-viewers-dont-get-me-started/

Naga Munchetty was back on the BBC Breakfast sofa today alongside co-host Charlie Stayt. However, as the pair discussed today’s headlines and top news stories, BBC viewers couldn’t help but be distracted by Naga’s appearance with fans of the presenter taking to Twitter to compliment the host on her choice of outfit for the show.

Charlie and Naga were both dressed smartly on today’s show but it was Naga’s appearance that garnered attention.

Naga wore a full-length white dress and paired it with dark pink court shoes while Charlie wore his usual navy suit with a green tie.

Naga’s collared dress was styled as a short-sleeved shirt on top, nipping in at the waist with a lace-style crochet skirt.

BBC Breakfast viewers were fascinated by her dress and took to Twitter to praise Naga’s fashion sense.

Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson said: “I think I was on record many weeks ago saying I had concerns about people gathering outside the football club, that said, it didn’t matter whether it was Liverpool or any other football club that won the Premier League during this time, there would’ve been those scenes outside any ground.

“I think we have to accept it’s not just linked to Liverpool, but of course they won the league.

“I think its frustrating people didn’t listen to the fans group, the club, manager and the players and individuals like myself to stay away.

“But understandably it was going to happen because of the euphoria, the excitement the passion for Liverpool football club amongst the fans was so much so they felt they wanted to celebrate and they didn’t just celebrate around Anfield, there was horns going, fireworks, right across the city last night,” he continued.

The BBC host replied: “It’s interesting, I’m listening carefully to what you say there, you say it’s ‘understandable’ and I appreciate it, it’s a wonderful moment for the city and you are in a position of wanting to represent those people and embrace those celebrations.

“But it’s not okay to say it’s understandable, is it? There is a bigger thing happening right now – we are still in the midst of a pandemic and there is a danger, that kind of phraseology, ‘It’s understandable that people want to go to the beach, it’s understandable people want to celebrate.'”

“Okay, well I apologise. The word understandable is not appropriate then, I accept that,” the Mayor replied.

BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am.
