As for what Naga and Charlie said to ignite viewers to complain, at the end of an interview with the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government. 

Charlie, who had been conducting the conversation said: “I think your flag is not up to standard size, Government interview measurements.

“I think it’s just a little bit small, but that’s your department really.”

Jenrick just smiled and when the camera returned to the studio, Naga was seen sniggering.

The BBC has since revealed that the broadcaster was flooded with over 100 complaints from viewers who were unimpressed by Munchetty and Stayt’s comments.

The broadcaster’s most recent complaint report stated: “We received complaints from people unhappy with a comment Charlie Stayt made about the flag in the background of an interview and Naga Munchetty’s subsequent activity on social media.”

A statement from the BBC added: “At the end of a long, serious interview with the Housing, Communities and Local Government Secretary Robert Jennick, Charlie Stays made an off-the-cuff remark about the size of the flag behind Mr Jenrick,” the BBC’s response began.

“It was meant as a light-hearted, off-the-cuff comment and no offence or disrespect was intended.

“Naga and Charlie have been spoken to and reminded of their responsibilities, including the BBC’s impartiality and social media guidelines.”

The three kept having a blast together throughout the rest of the show, with Owain commenting on the windy conditions of the past few days saying: “I nearly lost my wig,” to which Naga commented: “Now that would be so traumatic. Can you imagine?” 

Owain reassured everyone: “It’s not a wig by the way, but you know what, there is so much hairspray it’s almost completely synthetic,” which prompted Naga to comment: “You say that, but I have seen it jiggle.”

BBC Breakfast hosts Jon Kay and Rachel Burden checked in with Matt Tebbutt during the show to find out what would be coming up on Saturday Kitchen. He was joined by Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt while Yotam Ottolenghi was in the kitchen for the latest instalment. Unfortunately Matt couldn’t get a word in edgeways, as Naga and Charlie took over presenting joking they were on BBC Breakfast. At one point, Matt even joked he should just leave as he wasn’t needed in the studio.

“Our special guests today, Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt, good morning guys,” Matt said turning to the presenters. “Is it nice to be here rather than on the red sofa?”

Charlie replied: “I’m finding it all a bit weird frankly. I feel like doing, which is my camera, down here? Good morning and welcome to BBC Breakfast.”

Joining in on the joke, Naga added: “The time now is 9.31,” as Charlie pointed at Matt adding: “I don’t know what he’s doing here. I’m really confused.”

Turning to Naga, Matt asked: “And you’re just here for a laugh aren’t you? And the food and drinks.”

“Always,” the BBC journalist replied. “Yeah why not? It’s nice to get out and have a change of scenery.”

Matt continued: “I feel strangely more comfortable knowing that you’re there rather than down that lens to be honest. It’s always disconcerting.”

“It’s the false sense of security you’ve fallen into,” Naga replied. “I’m loving that.”

Matt then turned his attention to the presenter’s food heaven and food hell noting both had similar food hells.

“The best thing is, we have Yotam Ottolenghi here as well,” she explained.

Matt laughed: “I’ll let you introduce him,” before throwing his hands in the air and pretending to leave the studio.

Naga wasn’t fazed as she swiped: “Matt, honestly, it’s better without you anyway.

“So, we’ve got Yotam here and you’re going to dish up some amazing things for us.”

Helen Whately joined Naga Munchetty on BBC Breakfast to discuss the volume of NHS nursing applications and procedures surrounding care home visits. However, BBC viewers took to Twitter to slam the row as they vented their frustrated at the Care Minister “ignoring questions” from Munchetty.

Munchetty began: “This increase we’ve seen is a 34 percent increase in applications to nursing courses in England. What does that do for numbers? Of course there is a target by the government to increase the number of nurses in the coming years.”

“Well it’s really good news. We’ve seen applications for nursing courses up by over a third to 50,000 people to start this autumn so a real testament to people’s desire to step forward to be apart of our health and social care system,” Whately. 

“We want to, and need to, increase the number of people working in it and that includes our determination to have an extra 50,000 nurses in the NHS by the next parliament.”

Interrupting, Munchetty said: “Just to be clear on that number that 50,000 target that includes 19,000 nurses who will be retained with incentives.”

“So in order to achieve that number of nurses we want to increase the number of new nurses starting work. So that’s the UK students coming forward and training and of course to hold on to the excellent nurses we already have,” Whately replied. 

“Some nurses retire as they come to the end of their career but there are some nurses who aren’t staying with the NHS and we really want more people to stay.”

Munchetty asked: “Do you know in terms of the applications what percentage is likely to be accepted?”

“So what we’ll do and this is what we did last year as well, is we work with the universities and work with the NHS organisations that provide the placements for nurses to make sure we have as many places and placements as possible,” the MP replied. 

“Can we talk about care homes?” Munchetty asked, moving the interview along. “Earlier this month a group of charities called for them to be reopened for visits from March 1, can that happen?”

“I really want to enable more visiting in our care homes and just to be clear at the moment we are encouraging care homes to allow visits but they are restricted. You can’t have a normal indoor visit at the moment,” Whately said. “I really want to open care homes up.”

“Would that be dependent on whether residents and those visiting have been vaccinated?” Munchetty asked. 

“There’s not a direct dependency like that I mean clearly care homes have been at the top of the list for the vaccination programme. Visiting will be taken step by step and when visiting does return to normal we will be asking people to still use PPE,” Whately explained. 

BBC viewers weren’t impressed with the interview as one tweeted: “Helen Whately is on BBC Breakfast for the government this morning. Talk about ignoring the questions.”

“Helen Whately … ‘just to be clear..’ clear? just no …no…no…No… ruined my morning for the next hour. Please go away! … #bbcbreakfast,” another vented. 

A third wrote: “The timeline for #bbcbreakfast is full of people pointing out the walking car crash that is Helen Whately or people being racist towards Naga.”

“This person on BBC Breakfast has not answered a single question Naga has asked her,” a fourth suggested.

Someone else said: “Oh god, the useless @Helen_Whately is on @BBCNews #BBCBreakfast This uptick in nursing applications is nothing to do with the government.”

However, other viewers felt Munchetty wasn’t giving Whately the opportunity to respond as one tweeted: “Rude interviewing of a politician again!! I’m really fed up with seeing continually interrupting show some respect please. #BBCBreakfast.”

Another added: “Seems that the mission of @TVNaga01 on #BBCBreakfast is to interrupt as much as possible this morning!”

Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt usually present BBC Breakfast from Thursday to Saturday but for the second week in a row, Rachel Burden has stepped in to host in place of the 5Live host. Rachel and Charlie were on hand with the latest news headlines while Mike Bushell updated viewers on the latest sports news.

It’s not the first time Rachel has stepped in to host in Naga’s place.

However, while viewers have been concerned by Naga’s absence, the BBC Breakfast host confirmed this week she will be back presenting the Saturday instalment in a “couple of weeks”.

Fans began to question if Naga had stopped hosting the Saturday episode due to her new role presenting 5Live’s 10am slot from Monday to Wednesday.

One fan asked on Twitter: “@TVNaga01 Hi Naga! Have you stopped doing Saturday’s @BBCBreakfast now, as you’re doing your radio show as well.

“How fast do you think he would have to cycle to get up there?” she continued which left Charlie confused.

Looking at the image of Danny riding down the side of a hill, Naga explained: ”Well when you’re going up a steep slope you have to get up pretty fast otherwise you’re going to stop.”

Charlie pointed out: “The thing is right, I don’t think he cycled up here,” adding: “Look normally on a bicycle you’re going in the direction your head is facing towards.”

Naga sighed: ““I thought he was going up the other way,” before trying to move the segment along.
