МOSCOW, 30 NOVEMBER— #Romanovs100, the large-scale, cross-platform, multimedia project launched by RT to mark the centenary of the execution of the last Russian royal family, won in two categories at the Drum Social Buzz Awards, a competition honoring outstanding work in social media.

RT’s project took first in the category ‘Best International Strategy’, as well as in the category ‘Most Innovative Use of Social’, beating out projects produced for Samsung, Adidas, and Nestle, among others. #Romanovs100 was also highly commended in the category ‘Best Use of Imagery’.

#Romanovs100, produced in collaboration with the State Archive of Russia, took place across four platforms – YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Over the course of 100 days – from April 8 to July 17 – rare archival photographs from the Romanovs’ personal collection were published across the project’s accounts. The published photographs represent the most complete collection of photos taken by the royal family to this day. As part of the #Romanovs100 project, RT also produced a VR animation of the ‘Romanovs’ Lullaby,’ an exclusive composition by well-known Russian musician and performer Peter Nalitch. In addition, RT produced three other video clips in the style of the early 20th century, using archival photographs as a reference to reconstruct real moments from the royal family’s life.

Earlier this year, #Romanovs100 won at the Drum Content Awards and was a finalist in two categories at the Epica Awards.

#Romanovs100 was created by the same team behind the channel’s international #1917LIVE project — one of the biggest-ever historical re-enactments on Twitter. Dozens of Twitter accounts were set up as key historical characters of the period, from the last Russian Tsar Nicholas II and revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin to common workers and soldiers, tweeting events from 100 years ago in real-time. Historians from the US and UK took part in the project, as well as the world-renowned Brazilian author Paulo Coelho. The project has received more than 20 Russian and international awards, including the 2018 Webby People’s Voice Award. At the Shorty Social Good Awards, the project won for ‘Best in Education’ and won gold for ‘Best Overall Twitter Presence.’ It was also a three-time finalist at this year’s Cannes Lions festival.

MOSCOW, APRIL 8, 2018 — RT and its award-winning team behind #1917Live have launched #Romanovs100 to bring the story of Russia’s last royal family to life through thousands of Romanov family photographs recently unearthed from within the national archives. Working with nearly 4,000 original photos of the Romanovs – the largest media release of its kind – across four social media platforms, the project will retell the last decades of imperial Russia over 100 days leading up to the centenary of their execution on 17 July.

In conjunction with the Russian State Archive, RT will publish the most complete collection of the Romanovs’ personal photos ever assembled across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, as a large-scale ‘digital photo-puzzle’.

Kirill Karnovich-Valua, creative producer of the project at RT said:

“The Romanovs are deemed to be among the pioneers of photography – they had several cameras and recorded almost every meaningful event in their lives. The audience will be able to discover many sides of the Romanovs: last rulers of the Russian Empire, a devout loving family, passionate travelers, amateur tennis players, dog lovers, fans of breakthrough photography, and much more.”

Each of the four platforms will retell certain pieces of the family’s narrative using different formats and perspectives.

Mini-videos based on the Romanovs’ photo collection will be posted on YouTube, featuring historic aspects of the era in which the last Tsar’s family lived, as well as the little-known stories behind rarely seen photos. Photos from the family album featuring the most artistic and unusual images taken by the Romanovs will be published on Instagram. On Facebook, project followers will find high-quality panoramic photos in 180-degree format, and Russian composer and singer Peter Nalitch will record a special soundtrack to be integrated into lyrical videos for the project. On Twitter, individual accounts will tell first-person stories through personal photos.

In late 2016, RT launched one of the biggest-ever historical re-enactments on Twitter – #1917LIVE. The project has already been recognized by over a dozen international awards such as the New York Festivals, the Webby Awards, and the Shorty Awards, where it won five prizes, including one for “Best Twitter Partnership” for collaboration with world-renowned author Paulo Coelho.

RT’s #Romanovs100 project will run for exactly 100 days – from 8 April to 17 July – the day which marks the 100th anniversary of the Romanovs’ tragic execution.

A small yet colorful part of the iTunes Store will be history by year’s end. According to an internal Apple email obtained by Metro, Apple will stop taking iTunes LP submissions this month. Apple confirmed the plans to The Verge, signaling the impending end of the paid multimedia album experience on iTunes.

The leaked email reportedly stated: “Apple will no longer accept new submissions of iTunes LPs after March 2018,” and “existing LPs will be deprecated from the store during the remainder of 2018. Customers who have previously purchased an album containing an iTunes LP will still be able to download the additional content using iTunes Match.”

According to the Verge’s report, customers who purchased LPs will continue to have access to them, and they will be able to download previous and new LP purchases via iTunes. Customers won’t see any newly added LPs available to buy in the iTunes Store after this month.

Happening, features the work of Japanese artist and Pfahler’s collaborator and former husband Samoa Moriki, best known simply as Samoa. The artworks feature pop culture icons in bold, colorful paintings that portray a snapshot of the American experience.

The exhibition encompasses the full range of Samoa’s diverse art forms—an installation recreating his now-legendary Candy Coated Evil store, which opened in 1996 within East Village landmark The Pink Pony; costumes and props from his performances and music groups; and paintings that capture his deep experience of living in New York City. A major element of the artist’s show are live events—performances by Samoa and Kembra Pfahler, as well as a panel discussion, and an evening of video and film. The exhibition continues through February 11, 2018. All events will be streamed live on the Howl! Happening channel at howlarts.org.

From Kembra Pfahler’s statement about the exhibit:

In a poisoned, jaded world, this show is a limitless panacea. Samoa’s vocabulary is so innately understandable by anyone with a heart that still beats. And loved by those of us who understand that art and music and performance can create change, rather than just swell our pockets or decorate our rooms. It’s art that serves a purpose, and Samoa’s work does just that—one show at a time.

Howl! Details Samoa’s fascinating history as an immigrant artist who found a new home in the underground Lower East Side scene:

In the Candy Coated Evil exhibition, Samoa constructs his experiences of coming to the dystopic landscape of the Lower East Side. . . . Radical and outrageous, he has been an active participant in extreme alternative interdisciplinary art culture for decades. He was one of the first performers at the Pyramid Cocktail Lounge—where he learned English by performing with friends Tanya Ransom and Frederic, and watching early performances by legends like Ethyl Eichelberger and John Sex—a first wave of punk performance heroes that are historicized widely in the art world today. He stood out singing and playing his original music on his signature Gibson guitar at Wigstock in the early 80s; in 1984, his rock opera, Under the Bad Star, premiered at La MaMa. The opera featured his over-the-top sets and costumes; the backing band included members of the alternative post-punk band Jawbreaker. Many of his wildly eccentric costumes and other DIY artifacts from this period will be on display.

In 1990—with Pfahler—he founded the legendary theatrical shock rock band The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. Samoa was responsible for writing all the music for the band, which continues to wreak havoc wherever they perform today. As much a theatrical troupe as a band, New York’s TVHKB (named in homage to the B-movie scream queen) mixes their punk roots with elements of vaudeville, psychotronic films, and futuristic burlesque to arrive at their signature identity.

According to Variety, the purchase will include the film studio (and its subsidiaries); a cable package that includes the FX Networks, National Geographic, and several sports and international channels; and Fox’s shares of the streaming service Hulu and the European satellite broadcaster Sky, among other properties. (The company will keep its broadcast network as well as many of its local and national cable channels, including Fox News, so tell your MAGA grandparents not to worry about corporate bosses making Sean Hannity be nice to gay people.)

In other words, the giant entertainment conglomerate that already controls an insane portion of our filmed and television entertainment – including not only the Disney company and its many arms, but Pixar, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, the ABC television network, ESPN, A&E, The History Channel, Lifetime, and various local stations – will now control even more of what we put in our eyes and ears. But it’s probably noting to worry about; I mean, it’s not like this is a company that justblackballed a major news organization for reporting a story they didn’t like.

And even if that were a concern, hey, who cares about a free press or media monopolies when YOU CAN PUT X-MEN AND AVENGERS IN THE SAME MOVIES, AM I RIGHT?!?!

Now, the New York Times reports that the theater will be adding Ta-Nehisi Coates to the catalog of artists who’ve come through its doors. In April 2018, a multimedia adaptation of Between the World and Me — the author’s 2015 letter about blackness in both today’s America and throughout its bleak history of racialized brutality, penned to his teenage son (and ultimately millions of readers) — will be performed at the theater.

According to the Times, the performance will consist of portions of the National Book Award-winning volume being read aloud (Coates himself may appear in the performance — or may just offer guidance), while other, more anecdotal segments will be acted out by performers. The program will also include video projections, and a score by composer/jazz pianist Jason Moran (who scored Ava DuVernay’s Selma and 13th) will run through the project. The show will be directed by the Apollo’s own executive producer, Kamilah Forbes — whom Coates befriended at Howard University, and who was recently one of the speakers at the 2016 Festival Albertine, which Coates curated. (Forbes joined the Apollo in 2016, after she co-founded and artistic directed Hi-ARTS — previously the Hip Hop Theater Festival.)

Between the World and Me details the life and grapples with the political implications of the brutal death of Prince Jones, who attended college with Forbes and Coates, and who was shot in the back six times and killed by a police officer while unarmed in 2000. Forbes told the Times:

It was hard for me to read the book — because of my personal connection, but even just broader. Prince was a huge tragedy and loss to us all. Now we’re living in a world where we’re fearing. I think about my brothers, my nephews, my husband, and I fear for their lives. So it’s an even bigger discussion.

From the way Forbes describes it, it sounds like this show will be something of a living, evolving organism: each night will be different, and will even include different people onstage, from “everyday folks to celebrity voices.” It sounds very much in keeping Forbes’s intent, as she told Ebony last October, to see that the venue “constantly stay ahead and ensure that the legends of today continue to see the Apollo as a home and a haven — a place for creation, not just as a venue but to take a risk.”
