After last week’s new release marathon, we’re thankfully back to more manageable levels of new release intake. So this week we’ve got an energetic new documentary on Netflix, a couple of prestige dramas from the fall, an above-average popcorn movie, and a documentary about one of the legends of New Hollywood.

ON NETFLIX

The Legend of Cocaine Island: It’s the ultimate “Florida Man” tale, in which a fellow named Rodney Hyden decided he could dig his way out of his recession-era debt by chasing down the bag of buried cocaine at the center of a local urban legend. Director Theo Love’s good-humored, fast-paced documentary account is stylish and entertaining, with an ingenious central conceit: the opening credits announce “Introducing Rodney Hyden as Rodney Hyden,” and Love creates aesthetic incongruity by placing his very unconventional antihero into his snazzy reenactments of heists, car chases, and double-crosses. The characters surrounding him are colorful — his sidekick “Andy” is like Brad Pitt’s True Romance character made flesh — and Cocaine Island wisely resists the urge to take itself too seriously.

ON 4K / BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

Bumblebee: When this Transformers spin-off hit theaters back in December, reviews insisted it was better than that pedigree would infer – and you’ll have to be patient, because it does not get off to a promising start. And it turns back into a Transformers movie at the end. But in between those bookends, this is an enjoyable coming-of-age movie, thanks to the winning performances by Hailee Steinfeld and Pamela Adlon, and the graceful direction by Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings). And there’s a bit of sly subversion happening too; John Cena’s character, for example, is frequently framed as a satire of the kind of jingoistic militarism that plagues these movies.There are a few too many cutesy period winks (“I gotta see what happens to ALF this week!”), and whenever they have to circle back and check the franchise boxes, this viewer tuned out. But Bumblebee is reasonably fun and surprisingly heartfelt, which is certainly a new approach for this series.

The Mule: Clint Eastwood’s filmmaking instincts have been a little dodgy over his past few pictures, and there are certainly glaring flaws in his latest (I wouldn’t wish poor Dianne Wiest’s wedding day exposition dump on the worst of actors). And his complicated personal politics make this story of an octogenarian who becomes a drug runner for a Mexican cartel more than a little muddled. But there’s nevertheless much to recommend here, starting with Eastwood’s own leading performance; he’s been doing this so long that being onscreen is just second nature anymore, and there’s something about the simplicity and straightforward emotion of his work (particularly in his last scene with Bradley Cooper’s DEA agent) that’s overwhelming. And it’s impossible not to read between the lines of these scenes, whether he’s telling recent movie-star-turned-filmmaker Cooper, “Don’t do what I did, don’t follow in my footsteps,” or confessing to his onscreen daughter (played by real-life daughter Alison Eastwood), “I was a terrible father, and a terrible husband.” As storytelling, The Mule is shaky. But when viewed as Eastwood’s consideration of himself – as a performer, and as a man – it’s invaluable.

Hal: Few filmmakers in Hollywood history were subjected to a rise and fall as dramatic as that of Hal Ashby, who produced seven straight masterpieces in the 1970s (including Harold and Maude, The Last Detail, and Being There), and proceeded to make nearly as many misfires in the 1980s. Director Amy Scott hits most of them, and covers them well – but more importantly, she filters all of them through the overarching story of his love for the work. That love is conveyed not only via the usual talking head interviews and clips, but his personal letters (read here by Ben Foster, they’re often charming and lovely, often funny in their ferocity) and inspiring archival audio clips. “The film will tell you what to do,” he insists, and his advice is worth heeding; he made all those great movies all those years ago, and now, indirectly, he’s given us another one.

Vice: Writer/director Adam McKay returns to Big Short territory with this combination of history, satire, and explainer, focusing on the life and legacy of Vice President Dick Cheney. The hit-to-miss ratio is much more even this time around, but there are things Vice does very well – it makes complex history clear, reminds us of some genuinely horrifying moments in our recent past, engagingly explores the change in power dynamic between Cheney and once-mentor Donald Rumsfeld (Steve Carell, in the film’s best performance), and finds a first-rate running gag in the heart woes of its protagonist. As Cheney, Christian Bale rarely crosses over from imitation to performance, and McKay’s bursts of contempt for his audience and on-the-nose dialogue are a bit much. Even when the experiments don’t work, at least he’s trying things – and his inclination towards experimentation (innovation, even) is more than welcome in this season of dreary, rote biopics.

Daniel Radcliffe just went and got himself in over his head in the Beast of Burden trailer. The film (not to be confused with the Rolling Stones song) features Radcliffe as a man pushed to extremes to help save his wife. Lots of expository dialogue follows. Watch the Beast of Burden trailer below.

Harry Potter has really fallen on hard times since his Hogwarts days. In Beast of Burden, Daniel Radcliffe plays pilot Sean Haggerty, a man at the edge of his rope as he agrees to become a drug mule. Sean’s motivations are pure, sort of: smuggling drugs will help his wife with a life-saving operation. At least, that’s what I’ve gleamed from this exposition-heavy Beast of Burden trailer.

This is an interesting trailer. Moments of it border on being downright abstract, while others are loaded with scenes where characters are shouting out their motivations, i.e., “I only did this to save my wife!” I have a feeling this is simply the result of trailer editing, and not reflective of the film as a whole. Here’s the official Beast of Burden synopsis.

Pilot Sean Haggerty (Daniel Radcliffe) must deliver cocaine across the US-Mexico border for his final run as a drug smuggler. Alone in a small plane, he is faced with the burden of choosing between his allegiance to the Cartel, his deal with the Drug Enforcement Administration and saving his increasingly tense relationship with his wife, eagerly awaiting his return.

Then there’s the IMDb synopsis, which is slightly different:

Sean Haggerty only has an hour to deliver his illegal cargo. An hour to reassure a drug cartel, a hitman, and the DEA that nothing is wrong. An hour to make sure his wife survives. And he must do it all from the cockpit of his Cessna.

That synopsis makes me think Beast of Burden is going to be one of those “one man show” movies – you know the kind; the films that take place mostly in one location, focused on one specific individual. Think Ryan Reynolds stuck in a coffin in Buried, Colin Farrell trapped in a phone booth in Phone Booth, James Franco pinned between those rocks in 127 Hours, or Tom Hardy cruising around in his car in Locke. In other words, I expect this movie to be 90% focused on Radcliffe in the cockpit of his plane, shouting into a headset. Or I’m wrong!

Swedish filmmaker Jesper Ganslandt, who directed Blondie, The Ape, and several other films I confess I’m not at all familiar with, helms Beast of Burden, and in addition to Radcliffe, the cast features Pablo Schreiber, Grace Gummer, and Renee Willett.

This week at the LA Auto Show, Land Rover chief creative officer Gerry McGovern told an Australian publication that the new Defender, which is definitely coming, would be “polarizing” and that Defender die-hards might not get the visual link to the past they’re hoping for. Which all makes good sense, because while a perfect clone of a Series I with a modern powertrain and contemporary safety features sounds awesome, it’s probably not what people would spend their hard-earned dollars on.

And to be fair, the few that would like to do that can have several outfits restomod older Defenders.

These new spy shots of the upcoming Defender – and it’s almost certainly that, and nothing else, given its wheelbase – don’t add fuel to the fire either way. For one, the short-wheelbase mule looks like an awkwardly cut-down Discovery Sport, but it’s likely not based on that transverse-engined crossover. It does feature independent rear suspension that appears unique, although it’s hard to tell without peeking underneath ourselves. But it’s the wheelbase that’s the real key. There’s no product with this track that would have a wheelbase like this other than the Defender.

Our spy photographer also caught a long-wheelbase version which appears to be wearing a modified Range Rover Sport look. Since that vehicle is a unibody, like the Disco Sport, it lends some credence to the notion that the Defender will also abandon its body-on-frame construction. After all, the big Range Rover makes it work.

It probably won’t look like either of these. It also probably won’t look much like the Defender Concept 100, according to the company itself. What these photos really prove is that Land Rover is serious enough about the whole thing to build short-wheelbase mules, and that’s a promising sign that the Defender won’t simply be a lightly restyled version of some existing platform. Which would be a crying shame.

The thing about the old Defender was, it wasn’t just capable, it was supremely rugged. Land Rover wraps all its vehicles in a mantle of capability now, even the crossovers. Where the Defender will fall on the spectrum, and whether it’ll be a serious piece of hardware, is an open question. One thing’s sure: the purists probably won’t like it.

The Dodge Demon apparently refuses to stay under wraps. The endless rollout of teasers continues each Thursday, but thanks to both Vin Diesel and our trusty spy photographer we have a whole suite of photos that show a nearly complete car in the flesh. This car appears to have been hiding in plain sight, as some of these photos were captured in the Detroit area.

The car or cars in these photos is far less polished than the one shown in all of Dodge’s teasers. The Air Grabber hood is unpainted, though it does come with some awesome hood pins. The same goes for the bolt-on fenders, as other pictures show a cleaner integration of the Demon’s widebody modification.

Despite the large Nitto logo on the top of the windshield, the cars in these photos are both wearing a set of Pirelli PZero All-season Plus tires on non-Demon wheels. It’s as if drag radials aren’t the best choice for winter driving. This car is fitted with two-piece Brembo brakes, but there’s no telling if they’re different than the standard Hellcat’s.

The decals on the side of the car may give clues to some of the Demon’s equipment, but based on the LB Performance – commonly known as Liberty Walk- logo, the decals are likely more of a ruse than anything else. Liberty walk is famous in the tuning community for big, bolt-on body kits. The looks perfectly suit these test cars, though Borla exhaust and a Hurst shifter would be a wonderful addition to the Demon.

Outside of that, there isn’t much new to glean from these photos. Most of our questions about the Demon (horsepower, gearing, price) can’t be had from pictures. Look for more news each Thursday in the lead up to the car’s debut in New York in April.
