  • Dee Rees’ “Mudbound” is one of the best movies of the year.
  • It’s also the best movie Netflix has released to date.
  • The ensemble cast is terrific, but Jason Mitchell proves he’s one of the best up-and-coming actors working today.

Writer-director Dee Rees has been a shining star in the independent film world for years now, having given us movies like her striking debut feature “Pariah” in 2011, about a black Brooklyn teenager struggling with her gay identity, and the 2015 HBO biopic “Bessie,” about legendary blues artist Bessie Smith. But it’s her latest movie that will make her a known name in the mainstream.

“Mudbound,” which received high acclaim at this year’s Sundance Film Festival before being snatched up by Netflix for $ 12.5 million (it will play in theaters and be available on the site Friday), is a gripping work that looks at life on a rural Mississippi farm in post-World War II America. But it also contains themes of race and class that are sadly still very relevant in today’s world.

The movie is fueled by its perfect cast — which includes Carey Mulligan, Jason Mitchell, Jason Clarke, Garrett Hedlund, and Mary J. Blige — rich cinematography, and tender screenplay cowritten by Rees and Virgil Williams (adapted from the Hillary Jordan novel of the same name). It opens on a Mississippi farm with brothers Henry (Clarke) and Jamie (Hedlund) digging the grave for their recently departed father (Jonathan Banks) in the middle of a downpour. Jamie has cuts and bruises on his face, while Henry is conflicted about burying his father among the chains and bones of slaves they’ve uncovered while digging the deep grave.

We aren’t aware of the significance of any of these things, or why the black family in a carriage that Henry waves down to help with the burial looks so upset at him for asking. But in the next few hours it will all make sense.

“Mudbound” is a story about dreams that go unfulfilled, and how hatred that goes back generations can’t be mended by a single friendship. But mostly it’s about family: for one character it’s all he has, while for another it’s what he’s been trying to run from his whole life.

The two families the movie centers on are the McAllans and Jacksons. Henry McAllan, his new wife Laura (Mulligan), and his father Pappy (Banks) have all packed up and moved from the city to Mississippi to become farmers. Just down the road, Hap Jackson (Rob Morgan), his wife Florence (Blige), and their kids try to build a life of their own with their cotton crop, working on land McAllan owns.

Mudbound NetflixNetflixThis part of the movie is heightened by the work of character actor Rob Morgan, known best for his roles on Netflix shows “Luke Cage” and “Stranger Things.” He plays Hap as a proud man struggling to make a better life for his family, though all he knows is back-breaking work on the farm. Preaching in a half-built church on Sundays, and then tending to his cotton the rest of the week, we feel his pain through his heartbreaking voiceovers. One touching voiceover on the worth of a deed — playing on the word’s dual meaning as a “good deed” or a “deed” to land — is delivered in a way by Morgan that will leave you with goosebumps.

The story then shifts abroad to the family’s boys battling in World War II. Jamie McAllan (Hedlund) is a pilot and Ronsel Jackson (Jason Mitchell) is a tank commander. Both see a lot of awful things, and lose buddies, but Ronsel also realizes that on the field of battle, and to those he’s liberating, the color of his skin means nothing.

Both come home to Mississippi and form an instant bond as they suffer from different forms of PTSD. But Ronsel also has to deal with racism as soon as he gets off the bus. Things get worse when Ronsel crosses paths with Pappy, leading to a riff between the families, and to Ronsel suddenly having a target on his back among the white supremacists in the area.

However, Jamie and Ronsel’s bond grows even stronger. The two sneak away to have mid-day drinks and talk about the war. Ronsel even reveals to Jamie that he’s learned that he has a child back in Germany from the woman he fell for over there.

But things turn bad when Pappy realizes Jamie and Ronsel have been hanging out, leading to the appearance of the Ku Klux Klan and some very tough scenes to watch.

Rees captures this time in America with an unforgiving eye, which is essential to the story.

And though the story is heavily an ensemble work, it’s Mitchell’s performance as Ronsel that shines through. He’s has already wowed us playing Easy-E in 2015’s “Straight Outta Compton,” but here Mitchell proves that he’s one of the best up-and-coming talents in Hollywood today. It honestly will be criminal if Mitchell doesn’t receive an Oscar nomination for his work in “Mudbound.”

Hopefully Netflix plays somewhat by the rules to give “Mudbound” a chance to be eligible for Oscar consideration because it is pound-for-pound the best movie Netflix has released so far in its existence.

Netflix’s ‘Mudbound’ is Getting a Limited Theatrical Release on November 17 https://briefnews.eu/netflixs-mudbound-is-getting-a-limited-theatrical-release-on-november-17/ https://briefnews.eu/netflixs-mudbound-is-getting-a-limited-theatrical-release-on-november-17/#respond Sat, 11 Nov 2017 02:17:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/netflixs-mudbound-is-getting-a-limited-theatrical-release-on-november-17/ Mudbound theatrical release

Netflix has butted heads with theater owners ever since they started producing their own original films. A few of their films, like the Idris Elba drama Beasts of No Nation, have made it to limited theater screens in the past, and now another of their original movies, director Dee Rees‘ southern family epic Mudbound, will get a limited theatrical release next week. But will it also be ignored when the next batch of Oscar nominations roll around, or will this be enough to position the film as a possible awards contender?

Here’s the trailer for Mudbound, which comes from Pariah director Dee Rees:

Former /Filmer Angie Han reviewed the movie at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, calling it a “sprawling epic” and dishing out praise to performances by Garrett Hedlund, Jason Mitchell, and Mary J. Blige:

Hedlund has perhaps never been better than he is here as Jamie, a firecracker of a man who seems determined to snuff himself out with liquor. Mitchell’s role is less showy, but he’s no less good — he’s a master of expressing emotion with his eyes. The true surprise here, though, is Blige. She is downright unrecognizable as Florence. The role that requires her to strip away everything we know as Mary J. Blige: the striking looks, the the grand personality, the big voice. What emerges in their absence is a tough and tender portrayal of a mother who’s sacrificed and suffered all her life, but is still capable of savoring the rare sweet spots life has to offer.

The movie won the Gotham Jury Award for ensemble performance and the audience award at Mill Valley Film Festival and the Middleburg Film Festival. It sounds like there’s some real potential there for even more awards, and this theatrical release seems like Netflix’s way of attempting to get Oscar voters to take this film seriously instead of thinking of it as a TV movie.

At the heart of Netflix and theater owners’ long-running disagreement (which boiled over at the Cannes Film Festival this year) is the concept of exclusive release windows. Theater owners want movies to be available to see only in theaters for at least a few weeks before they move over to streaming, but Netflix insists on a day-and-date structure for every one of their original film releases – meaning that there’s no exclusivity, and audiences could either choose to stay home and watch the film streaming on a small screen or pay to go out and see it in a theater if they prefer that experience instead.

Last year, though, Netflix signed an exhibition deal with a theater chain called iPic Entertainment to release some of their original films in limited theaters on the same day they become available on the streaming service, and Mudbound is the latest film to benefit from that deal. Here’s the list of theaters where Mudbound will be available to watch on the big screen:

Atlanta – Landmark Midtown
Boca Raton – iPic Boca Raton
Boston – Landmark Embassy
Chicago – iPic Chicago Barrington
Houston – iPic Houston
Los Angeles – iPic Westwood
Los Angeles – iPic Pasadena
Los Angeles – Laemmle Santa Monica
Los Angeles – Laemmle Noho
Nashville – Nashville Belcourt Theater
New York – iPic Fulton
New York – Lincoln Plaza
New York – BAM
New York – IFC Center
Philadelphia – Landmark Ritz
San Francisco – Landmark Opera House
Washington, DC – Landmark West End

Notice that there aren’t any AMC or Regal theaters on that list. That’s because they’re still angry about the way Netflix is choosing to do business. (Netflix has previously said they’re “open” to “supporting” the big chains if they’re interested in releasing Netflix films in theaters, which probably rubbed the theater owners the wrong way even more.)

In any case, I’m glad some people will have the chance to see Mudbound in a theater if that’s how they’d prefer to see it. I’ll always be in favor of an option that puts the choice in consumers hands, and this release, even a limited one, at least does that for some segment of Netflix’s subscriber base.

Mudbound arrives on Netflix and in limited theaters on November 17, 2017.

Set against the backdrop of the Mississippi Delta during the Jim Crow era after World War II,Mudbound is both a timeless and timely film following two families – one black, one white – bound together by the hardships of farm life. Starring Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Jason Mitchell, Mary J. Blige, Rob Morgan, Jonathan Banks and Garrett Hedlund.

Mudbound is written for the screen by Virgil Williams and Rees and directed by Rees. It’s based on the international bestseller by Hillary Jordan.

‘Mudbound’ Trailer: Dee Rees Directs a Critically Acclaimed Tale of Racial Tension https://briefnews.eu/mudbound-trailer-dee-rees-directs-a-critically-acclaimed-tale-of-racial-tension/ https://briefnews.eu/mudbound-trailer-dee-rees-directs-a-critically-acclaimed-tale-of-racial-tension/#respond Fri, 27 Oct 2017 08:10:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mudbound-trailer-dee-rees-directs-a-critically-acclaimed-tale-of-racial-tension/ mudbound trailer

Netflix has made headway at the Emmys, but it’s still trying to become a major player at the Oscars. Mudbound feels like the streaming service’s attempt to enter the awards season with a major contender – a period drama stacked with great actors and powered by a story that feels all-too-relevant.

But beyond that, it just looks like a fine film, pure and simple. You can see for yourself in the Mudbound trailer below.

Set in Mississippi in the years after World War II, the film tracks two families, one white and one black (and both home to army veterans), as they attempt to coexist. “Attempt” is the key word there – this is the American deep south in the ’40s and this trailer is full of the kind of startling and unsettling imagery that suggests things won’t go well.

Mudbound Trailer

There’s a lot going on here: the stunning but terrifying landscapes, the cast of actors you’re always happy to see (even Garrett Hedlund had managed to become an interesting performer!), and the sense of tension and drama built into the very fabric of this story. Mudbound looks like a serious priority for movie fans at the tail end of 2017.

While the trailer is big and bold and built to grab your eyes, former /Film-er Angie Han saw Mudbound at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and walked away impressed by the small moments, the dynamics between the characters, and the performances. She also found its message timely for 2017:

So many films about America’s past treat our sins as though they’ve all been washed away. Mudbound, like the best of its ilk, knows that’s not the case. It lingers on small indignities and tiny moments of grace, on the millions of little ways that people lift each other up or push each other down, and those still resonate today, even as we pat ourselves on the back for being past the days of Jim Crow. I watched Mudbound just two days after Donald Trump was inaugurated as president, having run on the promise to return America to the spit-shined, sparkling good ol’ days, when white men ruled and black people knew their place. Mudbound is a reminder that even in those days, the truth of daily existence was a lot, well, muddier.

Mudbound is directed by Dee Rees, the director of Pariah and Bessie, and stars Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Garrett Hedlund, Jonathan Banks, Mary J. Blige, Jason Mitchell, and Rob Morgan. It is scheduled to hit select theaters and Netflix on November 17, 2017, where it should act as ideal counter-programming to the bombastic Justice League.

‘Mudbound’ Trailer: Dee Rees Returns with an Award Worthy Family Epic in the Deep South https://briefnews.eu/mudbound-trailer-dee-rees-returns-with-an-award-worthy-family-epic-in-the-deep-south/ https://briefnews.eu/mudbound-trailer-dee-rees-returns-with-an-award-worthy-family-epic-in-the-deep-south/#respond Wed, 06 Sep 2017 15:37:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mudbound-trailer-dee-rees-returns-with-an-award-worthy-family-epic-in-the-deep-south/ Mudbound Trailer

Right now we’re in a bit of a dead zone for theatrical release,s with most movies released this month being neither good enough for a summer blockbuster release or hopeful enough for a debut during awards season. But plenty more of the latter movies are just around the corner, and Netflix has just debuted the first teaser trailer for what could turn out to be a major contender for Academy Awards.

Mudbound is an adaptation of Hillary Jordan’s prize-winning 2008 novel of the same name, which tells the story of two families both at odds and tied together while struggling to get by in the racially divided Deep South during World War II. The film features an impressive ensemble cast that includes Jason Clarke, Carey Mulligan, Rob Morgan, Mary J. Blige, Garrett Hedlund, Jason Mitchell and Jonathan Banks, all turning in award worthy performances. Get a look at the movie with the Mudbound trailer below.

Even if you didn’t know Mudbound was based on a novel, it feels like it through and through, complete with multiple narrators creating a William Faulkner-esque narrative that could easily fill a miniseries. But somehow, director Dee Rees (Pariah, Bessie) manages to keep everything in order and make every single moment of this drama compelling and harrowing.

Perhaps the most remarkable element of the film though are the performances from each and every actor in the cast. Garrett Hedlund turns in a surprisingly great turn as Jamie McAllan, a solider just returned home from the war, struggling with PTSD. Jason Mitchell shines as Ronsel Jackson, a fellow soldier who has coped a little better with life after the war and becomes unlikely friends with Jamie, despite the racist warnings from his grandfather (Jonathan Banks).

But the most surprising performance comes from Mary J. Blige, who is not only nearly unrecognizable in this movie, but delivers an Oscar-worthy turn as Florence Jackson. The Grammy-winning singer has dabbled in acting here and there, but she’s never given us a breakthrough performance like this. There will undoubtedly be a major campaign for her to get some recognition from the Academy this year.

Mudbound is a complex family drama weaving a rich tapestry of social struggles, complicated relationships, and intense drama. This could be Netflix’s big awards contender this year, and hopefully it ends up getting more attention than Beasts of No Nation did. For more, you can read our full review by Angie Han from the 2017 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

Set in the rural American South during World War II, Dee Rees’ Mudbound is an epic story of two families pitted against one another by a ruthless social hierarchy, yet bound together by the shared farmland of the Mississippi Delta.

Mudbound follows the McAllan family, newly transplanted from the quiet civility of Memphis and unprepared for the harsh demands of farming. Despite the grandiose dreams of Henry (Jason Clarke), his wife Laura (Carey Mulligan) struggles to keep the faith in her husband’s losing venture. Meanwhile, Hap and Florence Jackson (Rob Morgan, Mary J. Blige) — sharecroppers who have worked the land for generations — struggle bravely to build a small dream of their own despite the rigidly enforced social barriers they face.

The war upends both families’ plans as their returning loved ones, Jamie McAllan (Garrett Hedlund) and Ronsel Jackson (Jason Mitchell), forge a fast but uneasy friendship that challenges the brutal realities of the Jim Crow South in which they live.

Mudbound hits Netflix and select theaters on November 17, 2017.
