Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida said most GOP voters are more interested in economic issues than a new civil suit against Donald Trump alleging financial fraud. But some MAGA loyalists, Scott predicted, may be more motivated to march to the polls this fall because of the mushrooming government investigations into the embattled former president.
"Some people are mad over Mar-a-Lago. But I think most of it is going to be about how it impacts your family," Scott said of his read on the current midterms outlook, adding that he expects the November election will turn on concerns about inflation, parental rights in schools, domestic crime, and immigration.
Republicans need to pick up just one seat this November to reclaim control of the 50-50 Senate. And Scott, who is in charge of the Senate's reelection arm this cycle, has made Trump and his ideas integral parts of the 2022 campaign — much to the chagrin of disapproving Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
While noting that he hadn't yet seen it, Scott didn't put much stock in the lawsuit New York Attorney General Letitia James filed against Trump and three of his children on Wednesday.
James accused Trump of fudging financial information to "further enrich himself and cheat the system" and is pushing for $ 250 million in penalties. That case, or any corresponding criminal offshoot, is likely to take years to play out.
Scott said what matters more to diehard Trump fans is how the former president is being scrutinized by federal investigators right now.
"I think the FBI revved up the base — by doing the raid and not telling anyone why they did it," Scott said.
Trump has fueled the backlash against federal law enforcement by denouncing the various investigations into his political and personal dealings as partisan "witch hunts."

Here’s the iPhone 14 with front and back panels, and a middle frame. [credit:
iFixit
]
As has become an annual custom, iFixit has done a teardown of the iPhone 14, Apple’s baseline flagship iPhone for 2022. While the iPhone 14 seems almost identical to its immediate predecessor on the surface, iFixit found one vital difference Apple hasn’t announced publicly: it’s much easier to repair.
iFixit calls it “the most significant design change to the iPhone in a long time,” for their purposes, at least.
In the new design, the bulk of the phone is in a midframe, but the frame can be opened on either side—both the front and the back. Other recent models—including the still-sold iPhone 13, iPhone 12, and iPhone SE, as well as the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max—could only be opened from the front.

Thousands of international travelers' electronic data is quietly stored in a US Customs and Border Protection database, viewable by thousands of its workers, for up to 15 years, The Washington Post reported.
As one of the country's largest law enforcement agencies, with a workforce of roughly 60,000 people, CBP is not required to have a warrant to search phones, tablets, or laptops — which opponents say is a constitutional violation of privacy.
"Innocent Americans should not be tricked into unlocking their phones and laptops," Sen. Ron Wyden said in a Thursday letter to the agency.
It's widely known to international travelers that CBP can rifle through electronics and belongings, but Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, recently shed light on the agency's habit of storing data from seized electronics — including contacts, messages, calendars, photos, social media posts, and medical and financial records — in a database more than 2,500 individuals inside the agency have access to.
Information in the database can also be referred to other law enforcement agencies like the FBI or local police departments. "Copies of documents or devices, or portions thereof, which are retained in accordance with this section, may be shared by CBP with Federal, state, local, and foreign law enforcement agencies only to the extent consistent with applicable law and policy," a 2008 CBP search authority policy reads.
Citing a staff attorney at the privacy rights nonprofit Electronic Frontier Foundation named Saira Hussain, WaPo reported the database has "few meaningful safeguards" to prevent the information from being mishandled.
Hackers have previously accessed CBP online data in a cyber attack, compromising travelers' photos and license plates.
However, a CBP spokesman, Lawrence "Rusty" Payne, told the Post on Thursday that the agency follows regulations and that searches are "exercised judiciously, responsibly, and consistent with the public trust."
Several representatives for CBP did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Ukrainian forces are staging a lightning-fast counteroffensive in the northeast near Kharkiv, and Russian troops are rapidly fleeing from their positions as the Ukrainian military liberates previously occupied territory.
The speed of the offensive — which gained momentum last week and saw significant breakthroughs over the weekend — and how quickly Russian lines crumbled have surprised both sides in this bloody conflict.
Russian troops who recently fled from the front lines left behind so much weaponry and ammunition that Ukraine has struggled to handle it all, an unidentified Ukrainian soldier from an intelligence unit told The Telegraph recently.
"They left a huge amount of vehicles and ammunition. We couldn't transfer or evacuate it all to our rear," a Ukrainian commander, whose call sign is Birdie, told the paper.
Ukraine's defense ministry posted a tweet on Sunday with a video that purported to show a litany of abandoned Russian military vehicles. In the video, the caption read: "Everyone gets a tank. F..ck there is enough tanks for everyone. What a bonus."
"Russia is trying to maintain its status as the largest supplier of military equipment for the Ukrainian army, and even to improve its status, knowing that lend-lease will soon come into effect. #UAarmy loves its trophy ammo," the tweet read.

Over the last two weeks, Ukrainian forces have launched counteroffensives in the country's northeast and southern regions in an attempt to reclaim territory occupied by Russian forces for much of the war.
British intelligence said on Monday that Ukrainian advances have forced Russia to withdraw troops from large chunks of the northeast Kharkiv region, where Ukraine's second-largest city is located, and Russian troops have been forced to take "emergency defensive actions."
In fleeing their positions, Russian troops have reportedly put on civilian clothes to escape capture as they run from the front lines and even stolen bicycles and vehicles from locals so they can evade Ukrainian drones.
Ukraine's General Staff of the Armed Forces said in a Monday update that its troops continue to liberate settlements in the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions, forcing Russians to "quickly abandon their positions and flee." It added that "the occupiers have taken away property and vehicles looted from local residents."
During a speech on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that since the start of September his military has liberated around 1,250 square miles of territory formerly occupied by Russian troops.
"These days, the Russian army is showing its best — showing its back," he said. "And, in the end, it is a good choice for them to run away. There is and will be no place for the occupiers in Ukraine."

Since July, Elon Musk has been having second thoughts about his decision to buy Twitter, leading up to his intention to quash the $ 44 billion deal. One of his concerns, he says, is the number of spam "bots" running rampant on the platform.
Musk says he believes that bots comprise upwards of 20% of accounts on Twitter.
Twitter, meanwhile, says that the number of bots on the platform is marginal — less than 5%.
Research published Thursday by the digital intelligence provider Similarweb seems to corroborate Twitter's claims — even though the amount of tweets generated by those bots may make it appear otherwise.
Bots are automated accounts that help drive traffic on Twitter. They operate just like accounts controlled by human users— retweeting posts, liking posts, and following other accounts.
Bots affect a metric known as mDAU, or monetized daily active users. However, the more bots there are, the fewer actual, human mDAUs there are. Ultimately, advertisers, marketing agencies, and companies want to reach real humans.
In Similarweb's study, the method wasn't to find the ratio of bots but to instead estimate the number of real human users, according to the company's CTO Ron Asher.
He added that "in a nutshell" Similarweb's data supports the finding that Twitter's estimates are reasonable.
Yet the study also found a grain of truth in Musk's claims.
Similarweb reported that 20%-29% of content in the US on Twitter is generated by bots. The study also found that only 19% of real, authenticated Twitter users in the US generate content everyday.
Similarweb noted that "not all bots are evil" — but some can pose serious threats.
"The issue is more with bots that evade that officially sanctioned path, faking human interaction. Often, they do this so they can artificially inflate sentiment for and against stocks, products, politicians, or causes," Similarweb noted. "Twitter says it tries to identify and eliminate as many of these frauds as possible but admits those countermeasures are not perfect."

Former Attorney General William Barr said on Tuesday that it's unlikely the appointment of a special master would impact the most important aspects of the Department of Justice's investigation into former President Donald Trump's handling of classified documents.
"I don't think the appointment of a special master is going to hold up, but even if it does, I don't see it fundamentally changing the trajectory," said Barr, who served as attorney general under Trump, on the Fox News show "The Story with Martha McCallum."
Barr said he believed the "fundamental dynamics of the case are set" and that the government has "very strong evidence" to help it decide whether or not to charge Trump.
"I don't think it changes the ballgame so much as maybe we'll have a rain delay for a couple of innings," he said.
At the same time, Barr criticized District Judge Aileen Cannon's decision to appoint a special master on Trump's request to review the evidence found at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida last month, as Insider's Oma Seddiq and John Haltiwanger reported.
"It's deeply flawed in a number of ways," Barr said, calling Cannon's ruling a "wrong" decision.
—Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) September 6, 2022
A special master is a third party appointed by a judge to assist the court with a particular case or matter, sometimes with time-consuming tasks that judges don't have enough bandwidth to do themselves. At other times, a special master could be someone with particular expertise who can advise the court on technical issues.
In the case of the Justice Department's investigation into Trump, a special master was assigned by Cannon to sift through and review the records seized at Mar-a-Lago — the central focus of the probe so far.
The ruling from Cannon, a Trump appointee, will likely slow down the investigation. She had also ordered the Justice Department to temporarily cease using the seized documents for its probe, largely cutting off its means to continue working on the case.
Cannon's decision has been panned by several high-profile legal experts, such as former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti, who tweeted that it set a "problematic precedent."
Harvard legal scholar and law professor Lawrence Tribe described the ruling as "utterly lawless" and said Cannon looked like "her mind was made up the moment Team Trump filed in her court."
Steve Vladeck, a University of Texas professor who specializes in national security law, called the decision "preposterous" for blocking the Justice Department from using documents already in its possession.
In his TV appearance on Tuesday, Barr urged the Justice Department to appeal Cannon's decision. While the department had previously indicated it would do so if a special master were appointed, the appeal had yet to be filed as of Tuesday evening.

]]>It’s a bold game, one that’s significantly longer and larger to fit in all of its ideas. I respected Naughty Dog’s ambition when I played the sequel two years ago, but walked away feeling like it was as swollen as one of the series’ Bloaters. After revisiting both The Last of Us and its excellent Left Behind DLC in the new PS5 remake, I feel more sure of my original critique. The Last of Us works because it’s a lean and focused game. Part II, on the other hand, makes it clear that excess is Naughty Dog’s Achilles’ heel.
What I immediately noticed in my replay of The Last of Us is that there’s barely a wasted moment. From its tense opening sequence to its gripping final hour, most scenes play a crucial role in the story. For instance, the winter-set chapter where Ellie takes charge serves as an important way to show how Joel’s ruthlessness has begun to infect her. My mind wandered once or twice during my 12-hour playthrough.
That’s even truer of Left Behind, a tight DLC that tells one of Naughty Dog’s most succinct stories in two hours. Every single moment is memorable, as it naturally develops the relationship between Ellie and Riley with each scene. I walked away from my replay wondering if it’s the single best pound-for-pound game the studio has made to date.

I don’t quite feel the same way about Part II. Clocking in at around 24 hours, the sequel is twice as long as its predecessor. Part of that is a necessity, as it’s telling the story of two different characters whose journeys run parallel to one another. However, I don’t always get the sense that every scene is indispensable as Naughty Dog tends to repeat itself much more. Several beats in Abbey’s story tend to retread already established ideas about the moral gray zones of violent conflict. We continually see “bad guys” reframed as “good guys,” something that’s already effectively established by the two-protagonist structure of the game.
That repetition is more noticeable in the actual game design. Naughty Dog tends to reuse the same tropes and scene setups to create artificial conflict. Several moments of the game involve a character walking toward a location, only to have the ground collapse under them and send them on some roundabout shortcut into a combat zone. There are less crutches like that in Part I, as complications aren’t as mechanically induced. That might make the game feel less like a high-stakes Hollywood blockbuster, but that’s ultimately to its benefit.

This observation isn’t only exclusive to The Last of Us series. You can see the same dynamic in Naughty Dog’s Uncharted franchise over the years too. The developer is at its best the less it’s focused on escalating drama. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a tight action game that smoothly ups the ante with each scene, while Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is a hodgepodge of disconnected set-pieces that only seem to exist to create the illusion that Nathan Drake’s adventure is more exciting than the last. I noticed a similar thread in January when I played through Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves’ Collection and found that Uncharted: The Lost Legacy held up better than the excellent, but often meandering Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
I have the exact same feeling walking out of The Last of Us Part I, even if Part II is technically a more impressive spectacle. While I could nitpick about the former’s now dated level design, I found that it doesn’t leave as much room for dead air. With less time spent looking for “another way around,” the focus is more squarely on building Joel and Ellie’s distorted relationship one scene at a time. That allows the game to naturally build to a violent crescendo, whereas Part II hits long stretches where it feels like the band is tuning up between movements.
I hope that The Last of Us Part I was as much of a self-reflective learning process for Naughty Dog as it was for me. I’d love to see the developer scale back its loftier Hollywood ambitions to create something as lean as The Last of Us (I still wish Part II’s final California-set chapter had been reserved for a separate Left Behind-sized DLC). Save some of those excess scenes for a director’s cut down the line — lord knows the studio needs better excuses to rerelease its games anyways.
The Last of Us Part I is available now on PS5.

European Commission regulators have suggested that smartphones and tablets sold there offer 15 different kinds of spare parts for at least five years, as part of a broad effort to lessen their environmental impact.
A draft regulation of “ecodesign requirements for mobile phones, cordless phones, and slate tablets” posted on August 31 notes that phones and tablets are “often replaced prematurely by users” and are “not sufficiently used or recycled” (i.e., junk-drawer-ed) at the end of their life. The cost is the energy and new materials mined from the earth for new phones, and unrecycled materials sitting in homes. Extending the lives of smartphones by five years—from their current typical two- to three-year lives—would be like taking 5 million cars off the road, according to the Commission’s findings.
The most notable proposed fix (listed in Annex II) is for phone makers and sellers to make “professional repairers” available for five years after the date a phone is removed from the market. Those repairers would have access to parts including the battery, display, cameras, charging ports, mechanical buttons, microphones, speakers, and hinge assemblies (including for folding phones and tablets).
