Fearing the vicious Salvadoran MS-13 gang, which has plagued Long Island’s Suffolk County and threatens to spread its terror further, residents from the wealthy Hamptons area in New York are turning their homes into fortresses. The extreme security measures include sleeping with guns, installing bulletproof windows and sometimes even luxury panic rooms. Supermarket mogul, John Catsimatidis, told the New York Post that he sleeps with a gun underneath his pillow. “A Walther PPK/S, the same one James Bond carried,” he said. “[My wife] Margo prefers a shotgun. Although, once, she thought she heard something, got the shotgun out and shot through the door,” he added. Fears that the gang is spreading to the eastern tip of Long Island were bolstered by Southampton Town’s police chief Steven Skrynecki, after he stationed police with anti-terrorism gear at charity galas throughout the summer of 2017. In April, the gang murdered four men at a soccer field in Central Islip. Three months later a Hampton Bays brothel, which was raided by police, was found to be tagged with an MS-13 sign. The gang is “in Suffolk County. What’s an hour car ride? They are near,” an unnamed Southampton homeowner said. Long Island contractor Chris Cosban, whose company Covert Interiors installs pricey panic rooms, told the daily: “The big thing [with homeowners] in the Hamptons is that if somebody has it, they [all] want it.” The price for a panic room ranges from $ 25,000 to over $ 200,000 which Cosban explains with ‘a wow factor.’ “They like to brag about it,” he said. People used to open up their garages and show off their Lamborghinis, but “now they take guests to the wine bar in their safe room,” said Herman Weisberg from personal security firm Sage Intelligence. He explained that clients look at the panic rooms as a secondary space that can double as a wine cellar or a secure room to display guns. Some East Enders say that their wealthy neighbors are going overboard and “get more paranoid the richer they become.” For more stories on economy & finance visit RT’s business section President Donald Trump pushed for tougher immigration laws in a meeting with family members of MS-13 victims, calling the gang members ‘animals’ again. Media outlets hostile to Trump either ignored the event or called it racist. Flanked by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, several lawmakers and Homeland Security officials, Trump heard testimonies from parents of teens brutally killed by the Mara Salvatrucha gang in Long Island. Many of the families were themselves immigrants from Latin America. Major media outlets did not seem interested in broadcasting the event, however. Fox News tuned in for the first 15 minutes or so, while CNN and MSNBC ignored the roundtable altogether. NBC News later tweeted a 20-second segment of acting ICE director Thomas Homan telling Trump that calling MS-13 gang members “animals” was too kind. “Animals kill for survival. MS-13 kills for sport,” Homan said. "I think you're being kind," Acting ICE Director Homan tells President Trump at MS-13 roundtable. "Animals kill for survival. Aaron Rupar, a reporter for ThinkProgress – the media branch of John Podesta’s Center for American Progress liberal think-tank – posted video tweets from the event, calling Homan an “Emo Fascist” and describing remarks by DAG Rosenstein as “kissing up to Trump and fear-mongering about brown people.” Trump is taking part in a roundtable event in New York to fear-monger about brown people. Many media outlets misreported the remarks as referring to illegal immigrants or even Latin Americans in general, however. Senior Democrats then criticized the president for alleged bigotry. On Monday, the White House doubled down on the terminology, releasing a statement that called MS-13 “animals” a total of 10 times, and taunting the Democrats and media critics to continue defending the gang. Trump campaigned on the promise to build a wall along the US-Mexican border and crack down on illegal immigration. Once in office, he also imposed a temporary travel ban on several countries – some of them majority-Muslim – and revoked DACA, the program shielding some illegal immigrants from deportation that was enacted by the Obama administration. Democrats have denounced his actions as racist. The US Supreme Court has yet to rule on DACA and the travel ban, though it has allowed the ban to take effect in the meantime. Like this story? Mexico authorities have arrested an MS13 leader in Tijuana, disrupting another attempt by the gang to create a small international drug trafficking pipeline into the United States.
No official announcement has been made, and details are still trickling in, but the arrest of Mara Salvatrucha (MS13) leader Nelson Alexander Flores, alias “Mula,” took place in the last few days, a US law enforcement official who requested anonymity because he did not have authorization to speak to the media, told InSight Crime.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech was peppered with references to the notorious MS-13 international criminal gang. But his address made no mention of its US origins.
Also known as Mara Salvatrucha, MS-13 has more than 6,000 members, according to the FBI. Its violent reach reportedly extends across Central America and Mexico; to Los Angeles and Washington D.C.
MS-13 has taken advantage of “glaring loopholes in our laws to enter the country as illegal unaccompanied alien minors,” Trump said in his speech Tuesday.
Mainstream media reacted by condemning what they saw as scaremongering by Trump. What many were less eager to point out, however, is that the real driving force of this brutal gang was never delinquent Central American teenagers, but US foreign policy. And it’s a story which implicates both Republicans and Democrats.
Breaking news: MS-13 originated when we deported Salvadoran gang members who arrived under TPS in the 1990s. Deportation doesn’t break the cycle; it’s part of it.

A lot of folks are mentioning that MS-13 started when the US deported criminals back to El Salvador. That’s inaccurate. Goes back further. It started when Salvadorans fleeing a civil war in which the US played a huge role fled to Los Angeles.

MS-13 was formed in the 1980s in Los Angeles, California by refugees fleeing the civil war in El Salvador. The war pitted a right-wing government against Marxist guerrillas. President Ronald Reagan’s administration played a key role in the “dirty war,” providing military and financial backing to the regime’s military, according to Raymond Bonner, author of ‘Weakness and Deceit: America and El Salvador’s Dirty War.’
Following the 1992 peace agreement in El Salvador, the United Nations Truth Commission (established as part of the accord) found that more than 85 percent of the killings, kidnappings, and torture had been the work of government forces.
These included paramilitaries, death squads, and army units trained by the United States.
Similar wars took place at the same time in neighbouring Guatemala and Nicaragua. These developments spurred a massive exodus of refugees to the USA.
#MS13 is a direct result of U.S. intervention in Central American in the 1980s. #ISIS is a direct result of the U.S. intervention in Iraq in the 2000s. Note how Republicans (and their hawkish Democratic allies) create dangers that are then used to justify more rightwing policies.

“This is a problem that’s American made through and through, so to treat it as though it’s some external threat being foisted on America obscures the fact that it’s our foreign policies, our military intervention and our long history that created MS-13 in the first place,” Daniel Denvir, writer-in-residence at Harvard Law School’s Fair Punishment Project, told Democracy Now on Wednesday.
In 1996, President Bill Clinton signed the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act which eased the deportations of migrant criminals. The Clinton administration then tried to tackle the growing power of MS-13 by deporting suspected members back to their Central American origins. This policy continued under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
The instability in these Central American states meant that Clinton’s policy only succeeded in creating a transnational cycle of organised crime, encouraging the spread of MS-13’s tentacles further across the US and Central America.
The policy of deportations turned what was a “homegrown LA phenomenon into a transnational criminal empire,” says Denvir.
Trump was right to draw attention to MS-13’s brutality and to point out the human tragedy caused by its operations. But he has failed to identify the deeper origins of the gang’s reign of terror: US interventions and failed foreign policy by Republicans and Democrats alike.
I’m going to just say it.
The MS-13 violent street gang is not representative of all immigrants who’ve ever come to America.
And all immigrants (and children of immigrants) should be insulted by that insinuation. #SOTU

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration announced a major gang sweep Thursday, with the arrest of more than 200 members of the violent street gang MS-13.
Officials from the Department of Homeland Security and Justice Department said “Operation Raging Bull” was conducted across the United States from Oct. 8 to Nov. 11, and concluded with the arrest of 214 members of MS-13.
“We will not rest until every member, associate and leader of MS-13 has been held accountable for their crimes,” said Thomas Horman, director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
This was the second phase of a federal effort to target MS-13. The first phase involved 53 arrests in El Salvador in September after an 18-month investigation.
In a statement, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said more than 1,200 gang members have been convicted so far this year, and about 4,000 have been arrested and charged. He said the arrests will help make the country safer “by taking MS-13 off our streets for good.”
Of the most recent round-up, officials said, criminal charges included murder, aggravated robbery, racketeering, narcotics trafficking, firearms offenses and assault. About 60 of the arrests involved people illegally crossing the border as unaccompanied children, officials said.
ICE officials announced that they added six MS-13 fugitives to its list of “most wanted” individuals — one wanted for homicide in Texas and five others wanted for attempted homicides of police officers in El Salvador.
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump directed federal law enforcement officials to focus resources on combating transnational gangs, including MS-13. The gang originated in Los Angeles in the 1980s, then entrenched itself in Central America when its leaders were deported.

The DEA started accepting applications in order to grow marijuana for research a year ago. This month, it had 25 proposals to look over. DEA officials say that they need the DOJ’s approval to move forward but has not received it yet.
“They’re sitting on it,” an unnamed law enforcement official familiar with the matter reportedly told the Washington Post. “They just will not act on these things.”
“The Justice Department has effectively shut down this program to increase research registrations,” an unnamed senior DEA official told the Post.
Rusty Payne, a spokesman for the DEA, said the agency “has always been in favor of enhanced research for controlled substances such as marijuana.”
The back and forth regarding marijuana policy is only one instance in a long line of disagreements between the DOJ and the DEA. At a time when President Donald Trump and Sessions have been taking a tough stance on drugs and crime, the DEA has quietly been questioning their decision making.
Acting DEA Administrator Chuck Rosenberg wrote an email to staff members last month, saying Trump had “condoned police misconduct” while speaking in front of police officers in Long Island, the Wall Street Journal reported.
During the speech, Trump said officers shouldn’t worry about protecting suspects’ heads while putting them into police vehicles.
The acting administrator stated that he wrote the email, “because we have an obligation to speak out when something is wrong.” After criticism from the public, the White House responded by saying that Trump was just joking.
Officials who have chosen to remain anonymous for fear of facing potential consequences have revealed details of internal disputes between the DOJ and the DEA, according to the Post.
The unnamed DEA officials said Sessions and his Justice Department began pressing the agency to take action on the MS-13 gang. Rosenberg, however, has warned the DOJ that MS-13, which primarily recruits teenagers from Central America, is not a serious threat in terms of distributing and selling narcotics. The real threat, the agency says, are the Mexican drug cartels, the Post reported.
DEA officials have directed people in their field offices to focus on the largest threat in their area. In many parts of the US, MS-13 is not a huge problem compared to other groups, the unnamed DEA officials said according to the Post.
Agency officials have warned that the Mexican cartels will use any gang to sell their drugs.
“Mexican cartels, Mexican transnational organizations are the greatest criminal threat to the United States,” agency spokesman Payne said, according to the Post. “There’s no other group currently positioned to challenge them. Whenever drug investigations that we do involve MS-13, we respond, but right now the No. 1 drug threat in the US is the Mexican cartels.’’
Department officials have been reviewing policies relating to this issue that were enacted by Sessions’ predecessor. Specifically, the DOJ is reviewing the enforcement of federal marijuana laws in states that have legalized the use of the drug.
Sessions also remains skeptical about the medicinal uses of marijuana.
“Dosages can be constructed in a way that might be beneficial, I acknowledge that, but if you smoke marijuana, for example, where you have no idea how much THC you’re getting, it’s probably not a good way to administer a medicinal amount. So forgive me if I’m a bit dubious about that,” Sessions stated earlier this year, according to the Post.
The DEA also has its problems with medicinal uses for marijuana. Last year, Rosenberg declined to remove marijuana from its classification as a Schedule 1 controlled substance. This means the agency declares the drug to have no redeeming medicinal qualities and high potential for abuse.
But Rosenberg wrote that the DEA would “support and promote legitimate research regarding marijuana and its constituent parts,”according to a DOJ document.
Rosenberg stated that the agency also had already approved research into the drug as 354 people and institutions were registered to study marijuana and related components. The studies included the effects marijuana has on humans after they smoke it.
The DEA then decided at the time to start accepting applications from people to grow marijuana so they could complete more detailed research, according to an agency document.
Rosenberg indicated in a call with the Washington Post that he would still support more research relating to marijuana even though the DOJ is not yet on-board.
“I stand by what I wrote,” Rosenberg said.
The acting administrator, who is a holdover from the administration of former President Barack Obama, also served as chief of staff and senior counselor to former FBI Director James Comey.
The only institution in the US that is currently allowed to grow marijuana for government research is the University of Mississippi.

The street gang that President Donald Trump has said US authorities are going to “destroy” as part of his crackdown on crime is known by a simple moniker: Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13.
And the garish tattoos that adorn the faces and torsos of its members often do more to announce the gang’s presence than the formal name.
But the somewhat sinister name and the gang’s extensive operations are a far cry from its humble origins.
Migrants from Central America, El Salvador in particular, fled civil wars in the region in the 1970s and ’80s, with a large number of them ending up in LA and Southern California.
Many of those young men, who arrived in the US without family networks or any other connections, gravitated toward gangs.
Some of them, according to Ioan Grillo’s “Gangster Warlords,” joined up with Barrio 18, an established gang that was started by Mexican immigrants but had begun letting in members of other nationalities.

Other migrants, at the time just teenagers on the streets of LA, started a new gang. Grillo, citing the work of anthropologist Juan Martinez and the dogged reporting of Spanish-language news site El Faro, described how they arrived at their new organization’s name:
“Bizarrely it comes from a Charlton Heston movie. Back in the 1950s, the film The Naked Jungle was a hit in El Salvador with the weird translation of ‘Cuando Ruge la Marabunta’ or ‘When the Ants Roar.’ Following this, Salvadorans took the name Mara to mean group of friends, who like ants protect each other.”
As Grillo describes, the first wave of Maras in LA saw themselves as rockers, dressing the part, listening to heavy metal, and calling themselves the “Mara Stoners.”
Their newness and odd attire marked them as targets for other LA gangs, who attacked them throughout the early 1980s.
But by 1984, the Maras had changed.
“To sound tougher and reinforce their Salvadoran identity, the Stoners re-baptized themselves as the Mara Salvatrucha,” Grillo writes. “People have speculated that Salvatrucha might be a play on words of Salvadoran and trucha, meaning ‘street smart.’ Others say it just sounded good.”
As the civil war in El Salvador deepened in the 1980s, more Salvadorans arrived in LA and found their way to Mara Salvatrucha.
This influx of new recruits, ones hardened by the horrors of the civil war back home, helped make the Maras better able to strike back at their rivals.
As time went on, the violence MS-13 members instigated and participated in got them thrown in jail, where, according to Grillo, the dynamics of gang life were different.
Reuters
Rather than upstarts who could carve out their own territory, Maras had to look for a bigger organization for protection:
“Mara inmates realized they had to join La Eme [The Mexican Mafia] to survive, and the mob was happy to add war-hardened machete wielders to its cell-block armies. The Mexican Mafia uses the number thirteen (M as the thirteenth letter of the alphabet), so as Maras joined up, they became the Mara Salvatrucha 13.”
MS-13 has only grown in the years since. As of 2012, the UN estimated that it had 19,000 members in Honduras and El Salvador, and members have been arrested as far away as Washington, DC, where the surrounding counties are believed to be home to as many as 3,000 members.
While the gang mainly focuses on local-level crime — extortion, drug dealing, and theft — it also has links to Mexican transnational drug cartels. It reportedly does street-level drug distribution for the Sinaloa cartel, helping that Mexican organization secure the vast majority of the US drug market.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has announced a crackdown on MS-13, but its strategy may run counter to the city policy in Los Angeles, an important hub of the infamous gang. ICE is calling on local law enforcement to help out.
A White House statement Thursday said the Department of Justice is requesting 300 more federal prosecutors for specific duties focusing on violent crime and criminal immigration enforcement to directly pursue MS-13 and associates of the gang, which has power centers in Los Angeles and northern Virginia.
ICE acting director Thomas Homan, in a rare appearance at a White House briefing on Thursday, called for a countrywide crackdown on MS-13.
“Targeting, arresting and removing members of violent street gangs such as MS-13 sends a clear message to criminal enterprises around the world,” he said, adding, “We need the community’s help, and most importantly, we need local law enforcement’s help, especially county jails that will have an MS-13 booked in that county jail. But if that county jail is located in a sanctuary city, they get released back to the streets.”
The ICE director also spoke in favor of a tactic controversial to so-called sanctuary cities.
“We are asking the local jurisdictions to hang on to them until we can get there and take custody of them when they are done with you,” he said.
ICE is willing to potentially grant legal status to any undocumented immigrant in exchange for reporting a member of MS-13 to ICE and cooperate with the investigations that ensue, according to WTTG.

President Donald Trump will address the new crackdown in a visit to Long Island, New York, on Friday. Since January 2016, MS-13 has perpetrated 17 murders in Long Island.
Rep. Peter King (R-New York), whose Long Island district has experienced MS-13 related violence, emphasized what the president’s visit will mean to his district.
“To have the president come here, two months after we had the attorney general come in … I can’t emphasize how important it is … to give hope to the community that the United States government and literally the most powerful person in the world, stands with [them],” he said.
