Nigel Havers, 68, presenter of new BBC show The Bidding Room, had a few home truths for renowned political journalist Andrew Marr. Slamming him for his “hostility” towards MP interviewees, Nigel questioned “Why can’t we work together?” at a time where the nation needs as many straight answers from the government as possible.

BACK BRITAIN’S BRAVE NHS HEROES – CLICK HERE NOW

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to cause a threat to public health, the UK government are slowly relaxing the lockdown rules in order to get back to some sort of “normal life”.

Government ministers appear on TV every day, doing various interviews for flagship shows such as BBC Breakfast and ITV news, but it appears each MP at one point during this crisis has come under fire for not being direct or willing to answer questions the public want to know.

Taking to social media, viewers have raged at the “incompetence” of certain ministers as they continue to evade certain questions about the rules and certain “mistakes” that have been made.

But others look at it from a different angle and place the blame on the presenters asking the difficult questions.

Nigel is among those who disagrees with the BBC’s coverage of such topics in particular, and admitted he doesn’t watch the news anymore.

Speaking to Radio Times, the former Coronation Street star snapped: “I’ve gone off the news.

“The BBC has been nothing but doom and gloom. The general public need support and optimism, but that’s not coming from anywhere.

He then targeted one presenter who he feels is especially “hostile”.

“Andrew Marr is very hostile towards whichever MP is sitting opposite,” he described.

“The MP then goes on the defensive and you don’t get anything out of them. Why can’t we work together?”

Nigel also added that he comes from a political background, where his father Baron Havers, a former attorney general, was a politician back in the day.

“My father was a politician in the days when you had a day job and did politics at night in your spare time as a civic duty,” he recalled.

“Nowadays, they leave Oxbridge and go straight to the Westminster bubble.”

Although describing himself as “well informed” in the world of politics, his talents resonate elsewhere – in entertainment.

This year saw Nigel set up his new daytime show The Bidding Room, described by some as a hybrid of Four Rooms and Antiques Roadshow with some added charm of The Repair Shop, whose creators are behind the series.

The BBC program features some of the most intriguing possessions brought in by members of the public for an expert to value, before they face five dealers who bid against each other to purchase the item.

Working with antiques is something of a passion for Nigel, but a passion so big his wife has had to implement strict rules.

When asked by the publication is he is interested in antiques himself, he replied: “Yes. I bought stacks of stuff during the pilot episode, but my wife this time said ‘Please, don’t bring anything else, we’ve nowhere to put it.’

“I did co-buy a bottle of wine for £500 with the experts, and we drank it together. It was a bottle of Château La Prade from 1959 and it was absolutely delicious!”

But the TV star admitted he has some particular specialities he looks out for, including 20th-century British painters and…. stuffed fish.

A member of the UK parliament who recently ordered the seizure of a cache of internal Facebook documents has shown no signs of backing down.

Meanwhile, a California county judge is irked that documents that he ordered kept secret under a protective order have now been shared abroad.

The years-long legal dispute between Facebook and the tiny app company Six4Three has now intersected with an ongoing British investigation into Facebook’s privacy practices—resulting in a strange twist.

MP’s ‘mock suicide’ in House of Commons sparks inevitable Twitter outrage https://briefnews.eu/mps-mock-suicide-in-house-of-commons-sparks-inevitable-twitter-outrage/ https://briefnews.eu/mps-mock-suicide-in-house-of-commons-sparks-inevitable-twitter-outrage/#respond Thu, 22 Nov 2018 11:22:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mps-mock-suicide-in-house-of-commons-sparks-inevitable-twitter-outrage/

It all got a bit much for Labour MP Clive Lewis who decided to simulate shooting himself in the head during a House of Commons debate on the finance bill.

The MP for Norwich South, and shadow treasury minister, was filmed shaking his head and laughing while his colleague Anneliese Dodds was interrupted by a Tory MP.

Lewis then molds his fingers into the shape of a gun, inserts them into his mouth before pretending to shoot himself in the head. The MP even shakes his body, to account for recoil.

The joke received a mixed reaction on social media, with some attacking the MP for ‘disrespect’ and conducting ‘behavior ill-befitting of an MP.’

While others, including the founder of the ‘MenandBoysCoalition’, defended Lewis, stating he just has a childish sense of humor.

The MP’s particular brand of jokes has landed him in trouble in the past. He apologized after he was filmed saying to a man: “Get on your knees, bitch,” at a fringe event at the Labour Party Conference.

MPs’ security spending jumps from £160k to £2.5mn since far-right terrorist murdered Jo Cox https://briefnews.eu/mps-security-spending-jumps-from-160k-to-2-5mn-since-far-right-terrorist-murdered-jo-cox/ https://briefnews.eu/mps-security-spending-jumps-from-160k-to-2-5mn-since-far-right-terrorist-murdered-jo-cox/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2017 14:51:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mps-security-spending-jumps-from-160k-to-2-5mn-since-far-right-terrorist-murdered-jo-cox/ Public spending on security details for British MPs has soared since the murder of Labour politician Jo Cox, expense claims have revealed. Cox was shot and stabbed to death by Thomas Mair in June 2016 as she left her constituency office in West Yorkshire.

New figures have shown that claims for security have increased from £160,000 ($ 210,800) to £2.5 million ($ 3.3 million) – a 15-fold increase – since the murder.

Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) has released the newest spending claims for 2016-17, which reveal the staggering rise.

“Following the tragic events of June 2016, there was a big increase in the total expenditure on security, rising to £2.5 million ($ 3.3 million) during this year,” Ipsa Chair Ruth Evans said.

“It is important that we take the security of MPs, and that of their families and their staff, very seriously.”

MPs are entitled to buy or lease security equipment such as alarm systems, CCTV and personal alarms. Ipsa is advised by police on appropriate measures. In June, MPs revealed how they were shoved and threatened while out campaigning as violence towards MPs appears to have increased.

Veteran Tory MP Nigel Evans said he had been “pushed” and called a “child murderer” during a visit in his Ribble Valley constituency. Johnny Mercer, an MP and war veteran said a man accosted his wife as they were out canvassing in a rant “full of rage and hate.”

Others, especially women, have described their fear after campaigns of online trolling. Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy has been threatened with rape and physical attack over social media.

Peter Nunn, 33, from Bristol, was jailed for re-tweets branding Creasy a “witch” and threatening her with sexual violence, after she campaigned to have the novelist Jane Austen immortalized on the new £10 note.

More than half of Britain’s female MPs said they have been threatened with violence.

Some threats have been carried out. MP Stephen Timms was knifed in the stomach in his East Ham constituency in May 2010. Radicalized student Roshonara Choudhry told police she wanted to kill the former government minister for supporting the Iraq war. The 21-year old was fortunately restrained by the MP’s assistant before she could kill him.

Security is not the only expense to have ballooned. Claims for travel, accommodation and meals rose last year to £13 million ($ 17.1 million). For 650 MPs, the travel and subsistence bill was for £5.3 million ($ 7 million), while £7.7 million ($ 10.1 million) went towards accommodation.

Meanwhile, the cost of running MPs’ offices fell from £113.6 million ($ 150 million) to £109.9 million ($ 145 million).

The 2009 expenses scandal exposed ludicrous levels of spending and frivolous claims by MPs, leading to prosecutions and attempts to clean up the system. Second homes, employing relatives, kitchen refurbishments, and even the cost of building a house for an MP’s ducks were charged to the public account.

Protesters in wheelchairs block MPs’ entrance to Parliament https://briefnews.eu/protesters-in-wheelchairs-block-mps-entrance-to-parliament/ https://briefnews.eu/protesters-in-wheelchairs-block-mps-entrance-to-parliament/#respond Wed, 19 Jul 2017 14:15:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/protesters-in-wheelchairs-block-mps-entrance-to-parliament/

Protesters in wheelchairs blocked MPs’ entrance to the House of Commons on Wednesday, chanting “no justice, no peace” in a demonstration over benefits cuts.

Police formed a cordon at the entrance to the Members’ Lobby as the demonstrators demanded to speak with MPs as they attempted to exit the chamber following Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs).

Protesters from Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) said they were campaigning against cuts to social care. They chanted: “This is a message to Theresa May: while we have no justice, you will have no peace” and “No more deaths from benefits cuts.”

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn greeted members of the group and was met with a chorus of “Oh, Jeremy Corbyn” to the tune of the White Stripes’ song Seven Nation Army.

Paula Peters, a member of the national steering group of DPAC, told the Independent she was in the Palace of Westminster to protest against the scrapping of the Independent Living Fund in 2015.

“Many disabled people with high support needs have had their care packages cut between 20 and 60 percent and are facing a bleak future in residential care or imprisoned at home, excluded from society.

“I tell this government now, disabled people will fight for their rights till the last person in their wheelchair to the last disabled person in this country.

“We are being treated horrifically under this government. We have borne the brunt of austerity nine times more than any other group.”

The group clapped and cheered as they left following the protest, which lasted more than an hour.

In 2015, 30 disability protesters were escorted from Westminster Palace by police after trying to storm the House of Commons.

Russia effectively fights terrorists in Syria, Europe should work with Moscow – French MP’s to RT https://briefnews.eu/russia-effectively-fights-terrorists-in-syria-europe-should-work-with-moscow-french-mps-to-rt/ https://briefnews.eu/russia-effectively-fights-terrorists-in-syria-europe-should-work-with-moscow-french-mps-to-rt/#respond Sat, 18 Mar 2017 18:54:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russia-effectively-fights-terrorists-in-syria-europe-should-work-with-moscow-french-mps-to-rt/ European states, along with the US, should change their attitude and policy towards the Syrian conflict by joining Moscow and Damascus in their fight against Islamist terrorism, which has proven “successful”, French MPs told RT during their visit in Moscow.

Europe “should be realistic and give priority to destroying Islamist terrorism,” Jacques Lamblin, a lawmaker from the center-right Republican Party told RT, adding that European countries should join in efforts with Russia and the Syrian President Bashar Assad, who in fact “rules the country.”

Lamblin went on to criticize Europe’s approach to the moderate rebels operating in Syria, whom he denounced as “moderate terrorists.” He said that helping them in order to “get rid of Assad turned out to be a bad idea because they turned against the French and the Western forces.”

He also praised Russia’s strategy in the Syrian conflict as “very wise”, including dealing with Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

“The Russians, though, said that it was necessary to work with Assad to target Daesh [Arab acronym for ISIS]… and that’s what has actually proved successful,” the official pointed out.

His words were echoed by another member of the French parliamentary delegation that visited Moscow, Michel Voisin. Speaking to RT, he said Russian military support for the Syrian forces “significantly helped to reduce the activity of Daesh in the Middle East”.

“Their [Islamic State’s] activity does continue, but, in Syria, it is certainly been reduced. I think we need to continue combining our forces in order to end the conflict and make the region a peaceful and stable place,” he stressed.

Earlier, the head of the French delegation, Thierry Mariani, praised Russian efforts in fighting jihadists in Syria as he met with Vyacheslav Volodin, the Speaker of Russian State Duma. “I would like to welcome Russia’s success in Syria,” he said, as cited by TASS.

Mariani went on to say that he “saw all those humanitarian efforts Russia takes to help civilians [in Syria]” and expressed his regret over the fact that “the western countries still regard terrorists and the Syrian government as equal [threats] thus only contributing to the continuation of war.”

The French delegation arrived in Russia on March 15 for a three-day visit that included various meetings and panel discussions with lawmakers from both houses of parliament.

The officials discussed fighting international terrorism, the wars in Iraq and Syria, the Middle East situation as well as questions of the inter-parliamentarian cooperation between France and Russia, the head of the State Duma’s International Affairs Committee, Leonid Slutskiy, told Russian media.

The French delegation had already visited Russia twice, in 2015 and 2016. The French MP’s also visited Aleppo after it was liberated by Syrian government forces supported by Russia.

Mariani noted that without Moscow’s support, Syria “would have had a chance of falling into the hands of terrorists”.

The latest comments of the French parliamentarians come as opposition fighters and their families are being evacuated from the last remaining opposition-held stronghold in Homs, central Syria, under a Russian-brokered evacuation deal, which was signed earlier this week.

According to Homs’ governor, Talal al-Barazi, the first group of rebels that included some 300 fighters and more than a thousand of their family members already left the city.

Jo Cox’s heartbroken husband admits anguish of MP’s death ‘still feels very early’ https://briefnews.eu/jo-coxs-heartbroken-husband-admits-anguish-of-mps-death-still-feels-very-early/ https://briefnews.eu/jo-coxs-heartbroken-husband-admits-anguish-of-mps-death-still-feels-very-early/#respond Wed, 22 Feb 2017 08:30:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jo-coxs-heartbroken-husband-admits-anguish-of-mps-death-still-feels-very-early/

Brendan Cox spoke to Susanna Reid and Piers Morgan to make a plea to unite the country in the face of an ordeal too horrific to comprehend.

Jo was brutally shot and killed outside her constituency office in Birstall, West Yorkshire, in an act of extreme “hatred” in the midst of the Brexit row which divided the nation.

It’s been almost a year since Jo’s death and now her husband said the pain is still very fresh.

“It still feels very early,” he said. “I think when something like this happens, when it’s so sudden, the shock insulates you from some of that pain over the first few days and weeks, but that fades.”

He added: “At the time, I said I’d do two things: To make sure kids are ok – that they feel protected, that they feel safe – and take on this hatred that killed Jo and bring communities together, so I’m throwing myself into those things.”

After footage of Jo played out on screen, Brendan confessed seeing his wife’s extraordinary smile and spirit brings it all back.

“Whenever I see hear voice or I see her image, it brings a lot of things back,” he explained. “That’s the thing with grief – feel like your on an level keep and then a smell, or picture…”

Brendan blamed the “shrillness” in the political debate on breeding extremism in the United Kingdom.

When Piers suggested Jo’s death was the result of mental instability, Brendan hit back: ”There was no mental instability there, it was hatred.”

Ahead of the first anniversary of Jo’s murder, Brendan is planning an enormous community event to bring thousands of people together across the country, launched by The Jo Cox Foundation.

“Jo was obsessed with loneliness,” Brendan stressed. “People don’t know each other on their street so on the anniversary I thought, ‘how do we remember Jo like Jo?’

“I didn’t want it to be about mourning, I want it to have that energy. The killing of Jo was designed to divide communities, so what better way to respond than bring them together?”

The Great Get Together takes place on the weekend of 17-18 June and is expected to mark the biggest local celebration since the Queen’s diamond Jubilee.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
