Allies of former President Donald Trump are baffled as to why he is leaning harder than ever into his support of QAnon — a conspiracy-theory-led movement that baselessly claims Trump is fighting a deep-state cabal of pedophiles.
Rolling Stone spoke to several people close to Trump, some of whom expressed confusion as to why the former president was suddenly so vocal with promoting QAnon-related messages.
The New York Times reported over the weekend that music sounding like a QAnon song had been played at a Trump rally in Youngstown, Ohio. During the rally, the former president's supporters were also seen pointing their fingers to the sky in a one-finger salute, which experts said might have been a nod to the movement's slogan, "Where we go one, we go all."
"Fuck if I know," an unnamed Trump ally told Rolling Stone when asked about the former president's apparent support for the fringe group.
The outlet also spoke to other people close to the former president, some of whom theorized that Trump was trolling for likes from his supporters.
"He's said that he thinks some of their memes and images are 'funny,'" a source close to Trump said, per Rolling Stone. The same source said Trump also thought it was "hilarious" that the media would get "so mad" whenever the former president would "touch the Q shit."
Another Rolling Stone source, described as a former White House official, said that Trump sometimes thought his QAnon-linked followers had "the right idea" regarding their hatred for the "deep state," a term used in the movement to refer to shady, secret networks and alliances influencing power at the highest echelons of government.
"I do not remember his exact words, but [Trump's response] was along the lines of: There are plenty of bad and sick people in Hollywood" and among the "liberal elite," the source told Rolling Stone.
A representative at Trump's post-presidential press office did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.
Following the FBI's raid on the former president's Mar-a-Lago residence on August 8, Trump — who previously flirted with the idea of QAnon — has started referencing the movement far more intensely than before.
In August, Trump shared over a dozen messages on his Truth Social account, some of which referenced QAnon and contained baseless conspiracy theories about the FBI. Other posts by the former president on Truth Social this month have included a reposted image of himself sporting a "Q" lapel pin, along with the movement's slogan.
Former FBI official Frank Figliuzzi said this week that Trump's embracing of QAnon could be "the last act of a desperate man." Speaking to Insider on Monday, Figliuzzi said Trump's support of QAnon was indicative of "increasing desperation," which could lead to violence within the movement.

Malek’s performance as the late musician has gone down a treat with viewers, and there’s even been a Golden Globe nomination – and speculation that an Oscar nod could follow. Despite the film’s lacklustre reviews, it has broken box office records and is the most successful musical biopic of all time. So how did Malek get it so right?
Speaking to Billboard, movement coach Polly Bennett opened up on the complex nature of Mercury’s physicality.
“[Freddie] was a long-distance runner at school and a boxer,” she said of his athleticism.
“This gives us a reason why Freddie ran across the stage and punched the air, and [allows me to explain to] Rami: ‘This is why that character moves the way that he does.’
“It’s interesting that Freddie only did solo sports, rather than football or rugby or any sort of team sport.
“In itself, that creates a physical attitude.”
Mercury was self-conscious about his teeth, which was reflected in his physicality.
“If you’ve got something that you’re self-conscious of, your body is going to respond,” Bennett said.
“It’s the same for Freddie’s large teeth. On stage, he holds his microphone incredibly close to his lips.
“He’s using the apparatus as both his power and his self-consciousness.”
Malek himself has spoken about how he wanted a movement coach rather than a choreographer to help capture Mercury’s unpredictability.
His performance was widely praised by not just the public, but by Queen icon Brian May.
Bohemian Rhapsody is out now.
On a sunny August day, women holding banners emblazoned with “Simply Toxic” protested outside the Tarrytown, New York, headquarters of Prestige Brands, the manufacturer of the Summer’s Eve line of feminine cleansing washes. Their demand? That the firm disclose all ingredients that go into the manufacturing of its sexual-hygiene products.
Look closely at the boxes in the “family planning” aisle of American drugstores, and among boxes of condoms and lubricants, you’ll notice something: Nearly all have a host of chemical ingredients. Some contain nonoxynol-9, a spermicide that can inflame the vagina; some have glycerin, which can spur yeast infections; and others may contain acetate, an alcohol that can dry out skin. Women have held protests like the one in Tarrytown for at least a decade, but now they’re taking the next step into entrepreneurship to offer alternatives to these products and to battle a deep-seated bias in the industry manufacturing them.
For centuries, men have led the design, sourcing, manufacturing and distribution of products that women put on and in their bodies. That’s now changing. When Meika Hollender, founder of Sustain Natural, which makes tampons and condoms with organic ingredients, launched her firm in 2014, she had few female peers in similar leadership roles in the industry. Today, Hollender’s firm is one of at least 30 menstrual, sexual health and underwear companies across the country that are owned and led by women, and more than 20 of these have launched in the past five years.
It makes sense that a woman would trust a woman to make a product for them.
Cayla O’Connell Davis, founder, Knickey
These women-led firms aren’t just offering healthier products for women. They’re also looking to protect the environment and reaching out to customers with innovative marketing, disrupting the industry. Jordana Kier and Alex Friedman founded LOLA in 2015, starting with tampons made from 100 percent organic cotton. Kier and Friedman have also launched a monthly delivery service to eliminate the inconvenience of remembering to buy tampons month after month. In May 2018, they launched Sex by LOLA, a line of gynecologist-approved sexual health products that appeal specifically to women.
Women’s underwear company Knickey, founded by New York-based Cayla O’Connell Davis, will launch its first line later this year, also completely from organic cotton. “I’m sort of an organic cotton evangelist,” says Davis. But she isn’t stopping there. Knickey has a take-back program that allows it to recycle old underwear every time customers purchase new ones.
And Hollender is trying to make sure that both products and their marketing are catered to women — and those along the supply chain that feeds the industry. Sustain’s condoms use latex from a fair-trade-certified rubber plantation. Its condom box design, featuring a graphic of two people kissing, is meant to appeal more to women — who purchase 40 percent of all condoms — and set Sustain apart from the “busy, loud and frat-boy competition,” Hollender says.
“Women shouldn’t be embarrassed to buy condoms just because the industry has neglected them from the conversation,” says Hollender.
The 2016 election of President Donald Trump and his male appointments to the executive and judiciary branches of men with controversial track records on reproductive rights have helped galvanize the emergence of female-led companies making products for women. “Some women took Hillary’s loss personally, but it motivated them,” says Davis. “We’re saying, ‘I’m not being represented, so I’m going to represent myself.’” Hollender agrees. “When it comes to female sexuality, the 2016 election empowered us to take control of our reproductive rights,” she says. “People are ready to have this conversation.”
But the core of the problem they’re trying to address is deeper, and predates Trump’s victory. To understand the scale of the challenge these founders face, look at the giants who dominate women’s products. One of the most popular tampon brands in the world, Tampax, is owned by Procter & Gamble, run by David Taylor. Kotex, another major brand in feminine hygiene, is owned by Kimberly-Clark, which is run by Thomas J. Falk. The same goes for condoms — the popular brand Trojan is owned by Church & Dwight Company, whose CEO is Matthew Farrell. A 2014 analysis by New York-based nonprofit Catalyst, along with the Huffington Post, found that 17 of the 18 Fortune 500 firms that cater significantly to female customers had male-majority boards, meaning women didn’t even have equal, much less influential, representation on them.
That mismatch, however, also makes the industry ripe for change, says Kier. “Markets like sex, for example, historically dominated by male-centric brands, were prime for disruption,” she says. “It’s encouraging to see women voicing their needs and desires, and brands actively listening to them in return.”
For many of these women, that disruption started with the recognition that the products traditionally available in the market were often poisonous — and that most women customers didn’t realize that. For instance, when you heat and mold any latex product, a chemical reaction occurs, explains Hollender, creating a byproduct called nitrosamine, which can be carcinogenic. “People had no idea what they were putting inside themselves,” she says. Hollender’s father and Sustain co-founder Jeffrey started Vermont-based Seventh Generation — which sells cleaning and personal care products that don’t use synthetic components — in 1988, so she grew up keenly aware of the harmful chemicals in many products.
Others, like Kier and Friedman, grew suspicious as they realized that tampon brands aren’t required to disclose exactly what’s in their products. “It made us wonder what’s actually in our tampons,” says Kier. The answer, their research showed, includes plastics such as polyester, the use of which in tampons has been associated with Toxic Shock Syndrome, a rare but potentially fatal bacterial disease.
To many of these women founders, protecting the environment and the health of women are both important objectives. “It’s a little bit alarming how much the fashion industry pollutes,” says Davis, who has worked in the industry for a decade. And because most fashion brands have male CEOs, she suggests, it’s not surprising that their products don’t fully take into account what women customers want. Davis wants to change that with Knickey, by designing underwear that is sexy and comfortable, but durable enough to wear while exercising. Especially with underwear, she says, “it makes sense that a woman would trust a woman to make a product for them.”
Hollender remains skeptical about how quickly companies like hers will take off in the larger market. Funding for female founders is a problem, she says. Just 2 percent of venture capital went to female entrepreneurs in 2017, according to data from Pitch Book. “There is a lot of work we still need to do,” Hollender says. She believes policy changes could make a big difference, like getting the FDA to require tampon companies to disclose their ingredients. Once that happens, “there would be a shift away from certain ingredients,” Hollender says.
But others believe the industry is already entering a new era. Even behemoths like Kimberly-Clark are trying to diversify their leadership to include more women, recognizing the shifting winds. In 2009, for example, only 11 of the top 120 positions — or 9 percent — at the firm were held by women. By September 2018, the company had women occupying 22 percent of executive positions, according to Working Mother magazine, which listed the firm among the 100 best workplaces for women. And after protests outside its Cincinnati headquarters in 2015, Proctor & Gamble did begin to make public the ingredients it uses in women’s sexual hygiene products.
“It’s easier now for anyone to start a company, including women,” Davis says. And when it comes to women being in charge of the products that go in and on their own bodies, the industry has reached the tipping point, she adds: “It will just continue to grow.”

Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated after leading the most influential protest movement in American history. King revolutionized the use of nonviolent resistance to combat racial injustice in the United States, but the Alabama preacher did not always believe in nonviolence. In fact, early on, King relied on armed guards for his protection until an older Quaker activist named Bayard Rustin walked into King’s home and changed the direction of the civil rights movement.

In her new book Pure: Inside the Evangelical Movement That Shamed a Generation of Young Women and How I Broke Free (out now from Touchstone), Linda Kay Klein shares the story of how her strict Evangelical upbringing taught her to be submissive, repressive, and “pure,” and how she came to reject that approach and seek out other young women who wondered why their faith and sexuality could not co-exist. We’re pleased to share this excerpt from Klein’s book.
From “PURE”
The need I felt to prove that I was good despite my developing body was never quite so strong as when the cast list for a play was released. I would run eagerly up to the list in hopes that maybe this time I had been cast as the romantic lead only to see my name, yet again, next to the role of a demon or a Jezebel. And it didn’t just happen in church plays either. Even in school and community plays, I somehow always seemed to be cast as the same kind of character. Once, in a mime I performed for a church mission trip, I was even cast as sex itself. My role was to silently seduce Christian with my body. Christian would refuse me and then slam a Bible in my face, after which I would jump back and wither onto the floor as Christian moved on to his next temptation: money.
After one performance, one of the actors, a pastor’s son, pulled me aside.
“You’re good at that part,” he told me.
“Thanks,” I replied. I had actually worked really hard at it, practicing my seductive moves and dramatic wilting until it was just right. This was what I wanted to do when I grew up after all! Find a beautiful, evangelical, actor husband and start a Christian theater troupe that would travel around the world changing hearts and minds for Jesus Christ through missionary mimes…sigh.
The guy smiled. “Maybe too good at it,” he raised his eyebrows.
“What do you mean?” I asked him, my face burning.
“Nothing,” he said. Then he turned away, repeating in a singsong, “Nothing at all.”
But I knew exactly what he meant. I wanted to make my leaders, my friends, myself believe I was good, but my stupid, floppy, breasty body was always getting in the way.
Later on the same mission trip, one of the girls handed me a piece of notebook paper. “Rob [the guy I’d had the conversation with] drew this,” she said. “He told some of the other boys it’s you.”
“What’s it supposed to be?” I asked, studying the long, thin pencil drawn line with jagged teeth at the bottom of it.
“He said it’s a hoe,” she answered, scrunching her face up in sympathy. My eyes hardened. A hoe? I had been around the public school block enough to know exactly what that meant.
I found Rob and gave him a lecture about why it was wrong to call me, or anybody, a whore that was so long and passionate he almost cried. But the lecture itself, that wasn’t what mattered. Not to me anyway. What has always mattered to me is what happened next.
Our reward for suffering “with joy” — smiling and not complaining — is being told we are “good.”
Minutes after Rob limped away, a group of other guys on the mission trip formed a circle around me.
Finally, one stepped forward.
“That. Was. Amazing,” he said.
“I thought he was going to cry!” another hollered, laughing.
“Oh man! He will never do that again!”
“Don’t mess with Linda, y’all. She willdestroy you!” said Dean, the boy who would later become my boyfriend. (Until, of course, I broke up with him for God.)
It was one of those moments, those rare moments in which you learn something about yourself by seeing yourself through others’ eyes. That day, I learned that I was tough. And that that was cool. But I would’ve given anything to be the kind of good girl that the pastor’s son never would have said those things about in the first place.
And so I prayed: “Don’t just give me the milk, Lord. Give me the meat.”
I was referring to 1 Corinthians 3:1-2: “And so, brothers and sisters, I could not speak to you as spiritual people, but rather as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Even now, you are still not ready.”
I had heard a sermon in which the milk was interpreted as easy living, and meat was interpreted as suffering. The message that suffering is somehow “good for us” is repeated often among some Christians, particularly Christian women. Our reward for suffering “with joy” — smiling and not complaining — is being told we are “good.”
Even outside of the church, everyone loves the good suffering woman: the pretty spinster who never admits her unending love for her sister’s husband (who secretly loves her too, of course); the single mother who gives up her dream so she can make enough money for her kids to pursue theirs; the pregnant woman who forgoes treatment for her terminal illness because she fears it could endanger her unborn baby and dies in childbirth. In books, movies, and just about everywhere else, girls get the message that the more selflessly and painfully a woman suffers, the more we love her. But nowhere is this message quite so clear as it is in religion.
As an example, in her book, A Year of Biblical Womanhood: How a Liberated Woman Found Herself Sitting on Her Roof, Covering Her Head, and Calling Her Husband “Master,” progressive evangelical author Rachel Held Evans highlights a subcategory of female martyrs that we especially love — suffering virgins “like Agatha (scourged, burnt, torn with meat hooks for refusing to marry the pagan governor of Sicily), Agnes (beheaded for refusing suitors and consecrating herself to Christ alone), Lucy (executed for distributing her wealth among the poor rather than marrying), and Blandina (a young slave thrown to wild beasts in the arena for professing Christianity).”
Having been raised on stories like these, I lay across my daybed praying for the opportunity to prove that I was not a “woman of the flesh.” To prove that I too could be an Agatha, an Agnes, a Lucy, or a Blandina. If I was just given the chance.
…My critics will say, “You turned out alright. You’re happily married with a great family. You’re a strong Christian (even if you’re not an evangelical). Whether or not you liked the purity message, it appears to have been good for you.” Though evangelicalism offered me many gifts — a deep spiritual life, mentors I could rely on, leadership opportunities that boosted my confidence, and more — the purity message was not one of them. Intended to make more “pure,” all this message did was make me more ashamed of my inevitable “impurities.”

PARKINSON’S disease is a condition that affects parts of the brain and the nervous system. The main symptoms are related to the body’s movement, with shaking in the hands being the most well-known. But people may get other symptoms that aren’t related to movement. There are seven of these to watch out for.![]()
You don’t need exotic radar, infrared or elaborate mesh networks to spot people through walls — all you need are some easily detectable wireless signals and a dash of AI. Researchers at MIT CSAIL have developed a system (RF-Pose) that uses a neural network to teach RF-equipped devices to sense people’s movement and postures behind obstacles. The team trained their AI to recognize human motion in RF by showing it examples of both on-camera movement and signals reflected from people’s bodies, helping it understand how the reflections correlate to a given posture. From there, the AI could use wireless alone to estimate someone’s movements and represent them using stick figures.
The scientists mainly see their invention as useful for health care, where it could be used to track the development of diseases like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s. It could also help some elderly people stay in their own homes by sending alerts if they fall or otherwise show signs of trouble. And since the technology is 83 percent reliable for identifying people in large groups (as many as 100 people), it could be helpful for search-and-rescue operations where it’s important to know who you’re looking for. Refinements could lead to 3D images that reveal even slight movements, such as a shaking hand.
It’s hard to escape the potential privacy concerns. This could theoretically be used to spy on nearby buildings, or follow peopl to their destination even if they duck around a corner. However, CSAIL has a privacy solution in mind: it’s developing a “consent mechanism” that would require performing specific movements before tracking kicks in. If that safeguard persisted in real-world applications, you wouldn’t have to worry about losing your privacy for the sake of convenience.
