Extreme cases of damp could cause damage to your home over time, but one of the most serious affects black mould has is on a person’s health.

Moulds produce allergens, that cause an allergic reaction, irritation and, sometimes toxic substances.

Inhaling or touching mould spores may cause an allergic reaction, such as sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes and skin rash, and they can also trigger asthma attacks.

Particularly for people with a lung condition such as asthma, cystic fibrosis or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or a weakened immune system, mould and damp can also cause a condition called aspergillus.

While there are several different types of aspergillosis, most affect the lungs and cause breathing difficulties.

Aspergillosis is caused by aspergillus mould that can be found in soil, compost, rotting leaves, plants, trees, dust, air conditions systems and damp buildings.

The condition is rare in healthy people but the NHS notes the following symptoms to look out for:

  • A shortness of breath
  • A cough – you may cough up blood or lumps of mucus
  • Wheezing (a whistling sound when breathing)
  • A high temperature of 38C or above
  • Weight loss

It should be noted that you can’t catch aspergillosis form someone else or from animals.

Most people who breathe in the mould don’t get ill.

If you have a cough for more than three weeks, a lung condition that’s getting worse or harder to control with your usual treatment or a weakened immune system and symptoms of aspergillosis you should see your GP.

If you cough up blood you should make an urgent GP appointment or call 111 if you can’t see your GP.

So how can you remove black mould?

NHS Choices says you may be able to remove the mould yourself, or you may need to get a professional to remove it.

Only remove mould yourself if it’s caused by condensation and covers an area less than one metre squared (1×1 metre or 3×3 feet).

Don’t try to remove the mould yourself if it’s caused by sewage or other contaminated water.

Protect yourself from mould spores by wearing goggles, long rubber gloves and a mask that covers your nose and mouth.

Open the windows but keep doors closed to prevent spores spreading to other areas of the house.

How to get rid of mould and damp: Eradicate a winter property nightmare using THIS trick https://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-rid-of-mould-and-damp-eradicate-a-winter-property-nightmare-using-this-trick/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-rid-of-mould-and-damp-eradicate-a-winter-property-nightmare-using-this-trick/#respond Wed, 22 Nov 2017 10:51:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-rid-of-mould-and-damp-eradicate-a-winter-property-nightmare-using-this-trick/

Mould and damp problems occur when a building is not properly ventilated and excess moisture exists.

Extreme cases of mould and damp could cause damage to your home over time, but one of the most serious affects it has is that on a person’s health.

Having such problems in your home can cause respiratory problems, infections, allergies and asthma and it can also affect the immune system.

While mould and damp can be removed by either yourself or professional, and making sure your home is properly ventilated, it may not guarantee the issue won’t happen again.

Infrared heating by design is more effective in eradicating mould and damp problems compared to radiators, according to Funky Heat.

David Cooper of the company explained that unlike radiators which heat air, infrared heating penetrates walls and continues to warm them even after the heating is turned off.

He said: “As infrared heat dries out walls from the inside, it eliminates localised damp and mould.

“It can be a great addition to bathrooms where primary reason of mould is cold and wet walls due to misty conditions.”

He adds infrared is one of the most cost effective heating systems available, as it does not create condensation int he way that traditional convection heating does.

No moisture is allowed to form or remain on window-sills, windows, walls or doors anywhere in a bathrooms, bedroom or living room, so mould does not have the opportunity to form.

What other reasons is infra red heating a good option to have this winter?

David said: “The first thing that comes to mind when we think about indoor heating is radiators, but radiators are not particularly good looking, can be hard to install, are not portable and not the most energy efficient to operate.

“Convection heating (radiators) works by heating the air around us – heat is easily lost through draughts and leaks, once the warm air escapes through doors, floorboards we feel cold again.”

How does it work?

David explained: “Infrared heating works by travelling through space and heats any objects they hit, including your body. Thermal mass of the objects means they release the absorbed heat slowly. Infrared is the reason we fell warm in the sunlight even on the cold day.”

Is it safe?

While the word ‘radiation’ can ring alarm bells for some people, David states infrared radiation is 100 per cent safe.

He said: “Our own bodies emit it – this is how search and rescue helicopters find lost people at night.

“As infrared heating works by directly heating the objects and people in a room rather than the air (volume of the room) there are a number of significant advantages over convection heating.

“There have been a number of independent studies assessing the benefits of infrared heating concluding that its takes a third more energy to heat a room using convection heat, there isa much higher heat loss with traditional convection heating, when compared to infrared heating and infrared heaters can provide the same comfort levels at lower temperatures than convection heat.”

Black mould and condensation: Could your house be giving you lung disease? https://briefnews.eu/black-mould-and-condensation-could-your-house-be-giving-you-lung-disease-2/ https://briefnews.eu/black-mould-and-condensation-could-your-house-be-giving-you-lung-disease-2/#respond Tue, 21 Nov 2017 18:56:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/black-mould-and-condensation-could-your-house-be-giving-you-lung-disease-2/

Lung disease deaths account for about 20 per cent of all deaths in the UK, according to highstreet hardware store Robert Dyas.

The condition – which includes asthma, emphysema, and bronchitis and lung cancer – could be caused by poor housing conditions. That includes mould and damp.

Five per cent of all houses in England have have damp issues, according to the English Housing Survey.

More houses suffer with damp and mould problems in winter, because its colder and wetter.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said healthy indoor air was a basic right.

“Exposure to biological agents are a significant health hazard, causing a wide range of health effects,” said the organisation.

Moulds produce substances that can trigger an allergic reaction, according to the NHS.

Asthma sufferers were twice as likely to live in houses with damp problems, it was revealed.

Those most at risk of developing respiratory problems from damp and mould were babies, elderly people, and those with a weakened immune system.

“Online searches for house mould have risen steadily over the last ten years and the peak time being from November to February,” said Robert Dyas’ Chief Operating Officer Rachel Brain.

Using dehumidifiers could help to keep homes dry. Other solutions include mould spray, moisture traps and a damp detector.

Opening windows, or improving ventilation, could also help to reduce mould.

Drying washing outside and putting lids on saucepans were recommended by the WHO.

Mould growth can be caused by condensation on windows. Condensation could cause structure issues with your home, if left for long periods.

To prevent condensation, make sure your washing machine or tumble dryer is properly ventilated.

Lung disease also includes emphysema, sarcoidosis and fibrosing alvolitis.

Symptoms to watch out for include breathlessness, a persistent chesty cough, wheezing and common chest infections.

Smokers are most at risk of developing one of the conditions, according to the NHS.

Treatments include pulmonary rehabilitation, and inhalers for asthma patients.

How to get rid of damp – avoid THIS when cooking to keep your home free from mould https://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-rid-of-damp-avoid-this-when-cooking-to-keep-your-home-free-from-mould/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-rid-of-damp-avoid-this-when-cooking-to-keep-your-home-free-from-mould/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2017 13:13:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-rid-of-damp-avoid-this-when-cooking-to-keep-your-home-free-from-mould/

Damp in homes can be a serious concern as it can indicate structural or weatherproofing issues.

At best it can make a room feel cold, which can be particularly unpleasant during winter.

Luckily many damp issues do not require professional help and can be prevented using some simple strategies.

B&Q has a number of tips to help keep the inside of your home warm and dry over the next few months.

Take care when cooking

Pans on the stove, as well as kettles, can produce considerable amounts of steam and moisture. Covering pans with a lid whilst cooking will help to minimise condensation on your kitchen windows. Switch on your cooker hood when using the hob and leave it on for five minutes once you’ve finished to help clear the air.

Keep on top of outdoor maintenance

Check your roof regularly for damage, especially after winter storms. Keep gutters clear and fix or replace as soon as any damage occurs.

Keep your home warm

Condensation occurs when warm, moist air touches a cold surface like a chilly window pane or a cold external wall. Loft and wall insulation can help create warmer spaces and properly fitted double-glazing will help to avoid misty windows as the inner panel of glass is insulated against the cold air outdoors.

Avoid producing lots of moisture

Drying washing indoors can create a lot of condensation, so dry laundry outdoors on a rotary drier or use a tumble dryer whenever possible. Choose an efficient A or A* rated tumble dryer to keep running costs as low as possible.

Remove excess moisture

Using a dehumidifier will help to remove excess moisture from the air. You can opt for a smart model that switches on when humidity rises or use a timer to run for a short while every day. If condensation regularly develops on windows, use a window vac to remove the water in the morning. You could also wipe windows with a chamois leather and wring it out into the sink.

Choose moisture-resistant decor finishes

If your home is prone to damp or condensation, choose wall finishes that make problem prevention easier. Opt for painted surfaces and choose paints designed for use in kitchens and bathrooms, With formulations designed to resist moisture and steam, they’ll not only help to keep mould at bay, but will also wipe clean more easily should any mould develop. If you prefer wallpaper you can choose kitchen or bathroom wallpaper that is able to withstand humidity and can be wiped clean.

Damp can often develop into black mould which can cause a number of health issues, from respiratory problems to damaging the immune system.

Accoridng to NHS Choices, if black mould does occur you may be able to remove the mould yourself, or you may need to get a professional to remove it.

If you’re looking to remove it yourself, this is what to do.

How to get rid of condensation in your house: Avoid black mould and damp by doing THIS https://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-rid-of-condensation-in-your-house-avoid-black-mould-and-damp-by-doing-this/ https://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-rid-of-condensation-in-your-house-avoid-black-mould-and-damp-by-doing-this/#respond Thu, 14 Sep 2017 04:41:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-to-get-rid-of-condensation-in-your-house-avoid-black-mould-and-damp-by-doing-this/

Condensation is one of the most common forms of damp that can appear in your home.

Left for a long time, it can cause structural damage to your property.

Peeling wallpaper, damp patches on walls and steaming windows are just a few of the problems that can occur.

Condensation can also lead to mould growth which can lead to serious health issues and breathing difficulties.

The reason condensation often appears in homes is due to lack of adequate ventilation which can cause humidity levels to rise.

According to Envirovent , four people living in a three bedroom property would create 112 pints of moisture a week from just breathing, cooking, showering and boiling the kettle.

So how can you reduce condensation in your property?

The supplier of energy efficient and sustainable ventilation products offers a number of tips on its website.

Tip one

If you have a washing machine or tumble dryer in your property, ensure it is vented correctly. Just one load of washing can produce two litres of water which is then emitted into the air.

Tip two

Where possible, try to dry your clothes, outdoors to prevent excess moisture from building up in your property. If you are unable to dry your clothes outdoor then keep them in a bathroom with the door closed and windows in until the clothes are fully dry.

Tip three

When cooking food, boiling the kettle or taking a shower, ensure your kitchen or bathroom door is kept closed to prevent the moisture in the air from going into colder rooms which will cause condensation to form if it touches a cold surface.

Tip four

If you don’t have an extractor fan in your bathroom or kitchen then make sure that you wipe down any cold surfaces when you have been cooking or taking a shower to remove any moisture that may have settled on the surface. This excess moisture in the air sits on the surface and will quickly turn to mould if left untreated.

Tip five

Many families have house pets and plants which produce a lot of moisture. Make sure you cover up your aquarium or fish tanks to prevent excess moisture. if damp patches start to appear on your walls or you start to notice more surface condensation on your windows and walls near to your house plants then look to move them outdoors.

Black mould and damp in the home, which commonly occurs in people’s bathroom, can cause a number of health issues, from respiratory problems to damaging the immune system. With the cooler temperatures and wet months ahead, here’s how to remove it.

Whether it’s damp or mould, the first thing to do is find the cause.

Once you’ve identified and fixed the source of moisture, how can you remove the mould?

Property news: ONE sign that ‘almost guarantees’ your house is infested with BLACK mould https://briefnews.eu/property-news-one-sign-that-almost-guarantees-your-house-is-infested-with-black-mould/ https://briefnews.eu/property-news-one-sign-that-almost-guarantees-your-house-is-infested-with-black-mould/#respond Tue, 23 May 2017 22:06:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/property-news-one-sign-that-almost-guarantees-your-house-is-infested-with-black-mould/

Black mould can cause a range of health problems, which can be very problematic.

The NHS says “if you have damp and mould you’re more likely to have respiratory problems, respiratory infections, allergies or asthma.

“Damp and mould can also affect the immune system.”

Whether you rent or own your home – make sure you are living mould free to avoid the unpleasant side effects and potentially long term health problems.

Toxic black mould is also known as ‘stachybotrys’, and is usually associated with poor air quality in the home.

Website Home Guides has claimed that a smell can indicate whether black mould is present.

“To tell if black mould may be growing in your home, just follow your nose,” the website says.

“A musty, earthy smell, like dirt and rotting leaves, is a telltale sign of mould’s presence.”

Black mould smells especially strong, so a strong odour is the first clue that a house needs to be inspected.

Visually black mould also looks a little different to other kinds of mould – which also pose health problems though maybe not as severe.

“Stachybotrys is usually greenish-black and somewhat slimy or wet, but may also appear grayish with a sooty, powdery texture,” the website says.

No matter what the mould in your home looks like, the website always recommends having any mould removed.

The NHS adds: “Some people are more sensitive than others, including babies and children, elderly people and those with existing skin problems, such as eczema.

“Moulds produce allergens (substances that can cause an allergic reaction), irritants and, sometimes, toxic substances.

“Inhaling or touching mould spores may cause an allergic reaction, such as sneezing, a runny nose, red eyes and skin rash.”
