Story’s inaugural season darkly reimagined Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs and Hansel and Gretel. Season 2 will put fresh twists on the princess-themed tales Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.

Moss will play Rebecca, the steely matriarch of the Pruitt family. After losing her husband over a decade ago in a car crash, Rebecca was forced to raise her three children solo, with varying degrees of success. She struggles to find balance between practicality, tough love and actual love (especially with her youngest daughter, Ashley, played by The Gifted’s Natalie Alyn Lind), and after years of pouring all her energy into her children, Rebecca is ready to start focusing on herself.

Campbell, meanwhile, will take on the role of the self-possessed, strong, smart and sly Olivia, who left small-town life behind and moved to Nashville to pursue her her master’s degree in Philosophy and Comparative Literature. But fate has new plans for Olivia, plans which will force her to rely on every ounce of strength, brains and craftiness she’s got — simply to survive.

The Season 2 cast also includes Odette Annable (Supergirl) Matt Lauria (Kingdom, Friday Night Lights), Eka Darville (Jessica Jones) and Ashley Madekwe (Revenge).

Tell Me a Story Season 2 is slated to bow later this year on CBS All Access.

When Elisabeth Moss and Alex Ross Perry team up together, you know you’re in for a hell of a performance from Moss. The pair first collaborated on 2015’s psychological thriller Queen of Earth, and now they’re reuniting for the maniacal rocker drama Her Smell.

Now, ahead of the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this weekend, you can get a glimpse at Moss’ no-holds-barred performance as a punk rocker hitting rock bottom in theHer Smell teaser clip.

Her Smell Teaser

With glitter smeared on her cheeks and smudged kohl lining her eyes, Elisabeth Moss looks like a punk rock diva from hell, as she rants and raves to a captive audience backstage after a show. The brief scene follows Becky mid-breakdown backstage, filmed in extreme close-ups that serve to unsettle and unbalance you — a staple of Ross Perry’s style.

Moss stars in Her Smell as Becky Something, a self-destructive rock star whose relationships with her bandmates, family, and fans suffer during her years-long war against alcoholism. She finds inspiration again when she becomes the mentor to a rising all-female band The Akergirls, but begins to crack under the pressure to succeed when her former bandmate begins to rise to stardom and she begins to fade into obscurity.

Moss gave a revelatory performance in her last collaboration with Ross Perry, but judging by what we’ve seen of Her Smell,  this latest film could easily top that. “[T]his was the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Moss said in an interview ahead of the film’s TIFF premiere. “It was not fun a lot of the time. It was hard to be in that head space, and hard to be in that person, with all that chaos and craziness. Some things are more fun to play than others. And this was difficult. At the end, I was incredibly fulfilled and happy that I’d done the role. But when we were shooting it, it was not easy.”

Her Smell also stars Cara Delevingne and Amber Heard.

The latest from Alex Ross Perry traces the psychology of an unforgettable woman under the influence. Becky Something (Elisabeth Moss, in a powerhouse performance), the influential lead singer of a popular ’90s alt-rock outfit, struggles with her demons as friends, family, and bandmates alike behold her unraveling through a prism of horror, empathy, and resentment. Perry tracks Becky’s self-destruction—and potential creative redemption—through snaking long takes (arguably some of DP Sean Price Williams’s finest work) in claustrophobic backstage hallways, garishly lit dressing rooms, and recording studios, and the film’s ensemble cast (including Cara Delevingne, Ashley Benson, Amber Heard, Virginia Madsen, Dan Stevens and Eric Stoltz) is impeccable in support of Moss’s rattling trip to the brink.

Launched earlier this year as a PSVR exclusive and eventually released for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive last month, adorable adventure game Moss is getting an update to support Windows Mixed Reality headsets.

Now players on all four major VR platforms can get into the immersive, lush, Zelda-esque world of Polyarc’s Moss with its charming little mouse heroine. Players will control Quill and her magical orb to navigate dynamic platforms, solve environmental puzzles and even fight bad guys across several chapters of engagingly beautiful design.

The new update also adds a new Controls sub-menu that enables two new controller layouts to better suit your play style. The first option lets you swap between the default Touch-to-Move style and a new Press-to-Move layout. The developer says that this should help “mitigate a handful of the ghost input issues players have been reporting.” The second option gives players the ability to change the way the Jump and Attack actions are mapped, to “alleviate issues players have been reporting with the Vive want touch pad.”

Jordan Peele‘s upcoming thriller Us has added another actor to its star-studded cast. Tim Heidecker has joined the cast, joining the likes of Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss and Winston Duke in Peele’s highly anticipated follow-up to his ground-breaking horror hit, Get Out.

Heidecker has joined the Us cast in a mystery role for which details are being kept under wraps, according to Variety.

Heidecker is a comedian and writer who is probably best known as one half of the comedy duo Tim & Eric, along with Eric Wareheim. As Tim & Eric, Heidecker has helped co-create comedy TV shows such as Tom Goes to the Mayor, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, and Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories. But Heidecker is not a stranger to horror. In Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories, he writes and acts in a horror-comedy anthology series heavily influenced by The Twilight Zone.

But it may be Heidecker’s comedy acumen that got him the role in Us, as Peele came from the comedy world before making his breakout directorial debut with Get Out. While Peele has confirmed that Us would be another film in the horror genre, the director suggested he would play with several genres in his sophomore effort:

“One thing I know is that this is genre, and playing around with the thriller, horror, action, fun, genre of intrigue is my favorite. That’s my sweet spot. So I think tonally it should resemble Get Out. That said, I want to make a completely different movie. I want to address something different than race in the next one.”

Us will mark Peele’s first return to directing since Get Out, which already makes it an immediate must-see movie. Get Out was a brilliant and subversive horror film that doubled as a social thriller, going on to rake in $ 255.5 million worldwide and becoming a bonafide cultural phenomenon in the process. And with a cast of heavy hitters like the Oscar-nominated Nyong’o, Emmy-winning Moss, and Black Panther breakout Winston Duke, Us could very well live up to Peele’s explosive debut.

Look for Us to hit theaters in March 2019.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising?

This week we visit an Asian film festival, revisit Monster Squad, visit three brothers from another mother, look deep inside ourselves in a small town, and get our freak on.

Wolfman’s Got Nards

Just when you thought you had heard everything there is to hear about Monster Squad, a seminal film for many budding cineastes, director Andre Gower is here to give you a little more. Even though Gower was in front of the camera for the original, what you can see in this trailer is someone who has reverence and love for a movie that just will not die. For those of us who revere this box-office bomb, which was written by Shane Black for those who need reminding, this is the kind of trailer that plays like visual comfort food. It’s not out to solve the world’s problems, but it’s nice to see the closing of a loop for what was a hallmark film for so many little geeks out there.


New York Asian Film Festival

Running from June 29th through July 15th, the New York Asian Film Festival churns out some of the best trailers to try and entice you to show up. Even though I’m about 1,500 miles away from the event, these trailers for movies coming out of Hong Kong and Japan are just incredible. Giving credit where credit’s due, the team who constructed these could not have done a better job in selling a host of movies all at the same time while having an eye, and ear, for proper flow. There hasn’t been a more effective film festival trailer put together this year than you’ll see here. Every year the NYAF puts together a damn fine trailer and this year is no exception.

Moss

As you enter director Daniel Peddle’s world, it’s the cicadas that make me feel like we’re peering into a world bound by reality. You can feel the mugginess, the camera languidly moving at a pace that fits the vibe it’s trying to set. It’s poetic, narratively ambiguous, and has a style that is uniquely its own. Sometimes I appreciate the construction of a trailer just because of how well it presents itself, and for a medium that’s supposed be about selling something, this isn’t a hard sell. It’s just asking for your attention. It got mine.

We The Animals

Director Jeremiah Zagar comes from a documentary background, and it shows here. What is so heart-piercing about this trailer is just how it nails that small nuance of what it’s like to have an intense relationship with your siblings when you are a child. The colors initially feel muted, but there are explosions of different hues that intensify the emotional resonance on the screen. I’m at a loss to say why, precisely, this trailer penetrates the soul, but the deeper you get into it, the more you latch onto these characters. It becomes a movie you need to see after only having met it two minutes, thirty seconds ago. It’s magically delicious.

Daddy Issues

I am not sure where to even begin with this trailer, but director Amara Cash inspires hope for the capabilities of new independent filmmakers looking to tell their story. Clocking in at just a minute, it will be the fastest rush of images you’ll see this week. I won’t even attempt to try and attempt to guess the plot, but the official synopsis isn’t much of a help:

Maya, a 19 year old queer pixie, gets romantically involved with her sexually fluid insta-crush and unknowingly becomes part of a twisted love triangle.

Whatever might be at play here I am happy to be a part of as there seems to be real talent squeezing through every frame in this trailer. It’s hypnotic, a little dirty, a little flirty, but a complete win when it comes to wondering whether it sticks the landing.

Moss is a visual treat for players who are seeking a truly immersive adventure where they get a front seat to a wonderous journey, taking them to wondrous lands and gloomy caverns while accompanying the adorable heroine. In doing so, players just might find themselves forming a little bond with the character they’re protecting on this exciting adventure.

Jordan Peele just took to social media to announce his next horror movie: Us, billed as “a new nightmare.” And that’s not all: Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss and Winston Duke are in talks to star.

Ready for a new Jordan Peele horror movie? I sure as hell am, and here it comes (in 2019)! Peele jumped onto social media tonight and announced the film’s title via a teaser poster.

Per Variety, Lupita Nyong’o and Elisabeth Moss are both in talks to star. The Hollywood Reporter adds that Black Panther break-out Winston Duke is in talks as well. Beyond the potential casting news, there’s not much else to go on here. THR says the plot centers on “two couples, one white, one black”, but that’s about it.

One thing we do know: the film will be another horror film from the Get Out filmmaker. The tagline on the teaser poster advertises Us as a “new nightmare” from Peele. And when asked in the past about what his next project would be, Peele confirmed it would be another film in the horror genre:

“One thing I know is that this is genre, and playing around with the thriller, horror, action, fun, genre of intrigue is my favorite. That’s my sweet spot. So I think tonally it should resemble Get Out. That said, I want to make a completely different movie. I want to address something different than race in the next one.”

Peele also added:

“What do I do next? How do I top [Get Out]? And you know, and I think it’s important to focus on stories that are true to me. I go, when writing Get Out, my sort of mantra is or was, ‘Let’s write my favorite film I haven’t seen yet.’ So I think it’s easy to get sort of bogged down in ‘how does this compare to the first one, how does that compare?’ When all is said and done, my next film, I am currently writing it and I’ll direct for Universal this year, I’m just trying to entertain myself again.”

Get Out was a huge hit, and became a film that blossomed into a bonafide cultural phenomenon. On top of that, it garnered several Oscar nominations and landed Peele an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Since then, Peele has been keeping busy, primarily producing projects, including the upcoming HBO series Lovecraft Country and the TBS series The Last O.G.

Us will mark Peele’s first return to directing since Get Out, and honestly it can’t get here fast enough. Peele making a new horror movie with this potential cast sounds too damn good to be true, but I’m thrilled it’s happening. Look for Us in March 2019.

PlayStation VR games are perhaps unsurprisingly an extremely mixed bag.

Problems with cameras, movement and controls have plagued many a promising virtual reality game.

The best VR games are the ones that keep things simple, focusing on immersion and storytelling, rather than over-the-top action.

Moss most certainly falls into this category, providing a storybook experience with light puzzle elements, simple controls and charming characters.

“In Moss, players meet Quill, a mouse with dreams of greatness,” reads the official Sony description.

“While exploring the woods, she finds a mysterious Glass Relic and an ancient magic is awakened.

“With her uncle now in danger, Quill must embark on an epic journey—and she needs you there by her side. Together, you’ll travel to forgotten realms, solve challenging puzzles, and battle menacing enemies. Alone, no one can conquer what you’re up against.”

Moss is a charming platform game that works really well in virtual reality.

The game looks stunning and is beautifully animated, which is part of the reason why you’ll grow attached to Quill.

The controls are tight, the puzzles are simple but effective, and there’s no danger of motion sickness.

Combat isn’t particularly exciting and it’s over far too quickly, but this is otherwise a fantastic game that oozes charm.
