The Austrian government’s decision to close seven mosques and expel as many as 60 imams as part of their campaign against radicalization has provoked a wave of outrage online. Some people on social media went as far as to threaten Sebastian Kurz personally. While some posts accused the chancellor of wanting a “war,” others openly said he should “prepare” for death, according to the Austrian national Oesterreich daily. Some posts also said that the head of the Austrian government “will find himself in a rubbish box,” while others just read: “Allahu Akbar!”

The chancellor’s office confirmed to Oesterreich that Kurz received “many” death threats, particularly on Facebook and Instagram, as well as in some “instant messaging services.” The situation was considered to be so grave that the Austrian domestic intelligence and counter-terrorism agency, the BVT, launched a counter-terrorism investigation into the issue, according to the interior ministry.

Additional measures were also taken to enhance the personal security of Kurz, who is currently on his visit to Israel, as well as of some other ministers.

In the meantime, the chancellor’s office spokesman said that the government would not let itself to be “beaten out of reason” and would proceed with its policy as planned.

The mosque closures and imam expulsions were announced on June 8. “Parallel societies, political Islam and radicalization tendencies have no place in our country,” Kurz said, commenting on the government’s decision at that time.

Some of the mosques are suspected by authorities to have been influenced by Turkish ultra-nationalist organization called the ‘Grey Wolves.’ The spiritual leaders, who can be subjected to expulsion, are currently under investigation for violating the 2015 Islamic Law that prohibits any religious communities from receiving overseas funding or acting against the Austrian state and society.

Vienna’s move was immediately slammed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who warned it could even lead to a “war between the cross and the crescent.” Earlier, the Turkish leader’s spokesman, Ibrahim Kalin, branded the move as “Islamophobic” and said it was made solely for political reasons.

On Sunday, the Islamic Religious Authority of Austria, the IGGO, also lambasted the government’s move by saying it was aimed at “discrediting” the Austrian Muslim community to score “political points.” It particularly condemned the timing of the government’s move, as it said that announcing the closure of mosques on the last Friday of the holy Muslim month of Ramadan just hours before the prayers was “an affront to all Austria’s Muslims.”

“These measures taken by the Austrian prime minister are, I fear, leading the world towards a war between the cross and the crescent,” Erdogan said in a speech in Istanbul on Sunday. Crescent, which can be seen on mosques and other Muslim entities, symbolizes Islamic religion since time immemorial.

“They say they’re going to kick our religious men out of Austria. Do you think we will not react if you do such a thing?” he asked, quoted by AFP. “That means we’re going to have to do something,” Erdogan added without elaborating.

Earlier this week, Austrian Interior Minister Herbert Kickl from the right-wing FPO party announced that the country vows to close seven mosques and potentially expel dozens of Turkish-funded imams and their families in Austria’s crackdown on “political Islam.”

Austrian officials, including Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, claimed the move was to battle radicalization and growing ‘parallel societies’. However, this explanation did not sit well with Ankara. “Austria’s decision to close seven mosques and expel imams is a reflection of the Islamophobic, racist and discriminatory wave in this country,” Ibrahim Kalin, the spokesman of Tayyip Erdogan, commented on Twitter.

According to him, Vienna wants to “to target Muslim communities for the sake of scoring cheap political points.” Ankara had also called the decision “racist.”

Al-Qaeda warns Saudi crown prince over replacing mosques with cinemas https://briefnews.eu/al-qaeda-warns-saudi-crown-prince-over-replacing-mosques-with-cinemas/ https://briefnews.eu/al-qaeda-warns-saudi-crown-prince-over-replacing-mosques-with-cinemas/#respond Sat, 02 Jun 2018 12:10:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/al-qaeda-warns-saudi-crown-prince-over-replacing-mosques-with-cinemas/ Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has reportedly warned Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman over his reforms, saying that reinstating movie theaters and bringing WWE wrestlers to the country were sinful projects.

The Sunni terrorist group said that Mohammad bin Salman replaced mosques with cinemas and gave up on religious texts in a statement on its Madad news bulletin, cited by SITE Intelligence Group. The influence of atheist and secular views has paved the way for corruption and moral degradation in Saudi Araba, the group said in its statement.

AQAP was especially unhappy about the WWE Royal Rumble event, which took place in the Kingdom in April. It said the American wrestlers exposed their private parts and wore signs of the cross before the mixed crowd of Muslim men and women.
Other signs of degradation include daily concerts, movie screenings, and circus shows, the jihadists added.

Since becoming crown prince a year ago, bin Salman has introduced a range of reforms aimed at the democratization of the ultra-conservative Muslim state, including lifting a ban on female drivers, reintroducing concerts and cinemas, as well as allowing women to attend football games. However, the country’s course was called into question in late May after the arrest of over a dozen mostly female activists calling for the lifting of guardianship rules that require Saudi women to receive permission from a male relative before making important life decisions.

Bin Salman is also responsible for a massive “anti-corruption” crackdown last year, which saw over 200 Saudi princes, ministers, and officials arrested in a move that, analysts say, was actually an attempt to consolidate power and extort money from the wealthy.

AQAP has gained momentum due to the ongoing conflict in Yemen, in which Saudi Arabia and its allies became involved back in 2015. Riyadh has been fighting the Shia Houthi rebels with the aim of re-instating ousted President Mansour Hadi to power.

Since then, nearly 6,400 civilians have been killed and over 10,000 injured, the UN said in early May, adding that “the vast majority of these civilian casualties were as a result of airstrikes carried out by the Saudi-led Coalition.”

After more than three years of fighting, Yemen is facing a massive humanitarian crisis. More than 22.2 million people in the country are in need of assistance, with 60 percent of the population lacking food and more than half left without basic medical services, according to the UN.

Ghana to order mosques, churches to hush up, issue call to prayer via WhatsApp instead https://briefnews.eu/ghana-to-order-mosques-churches-to-hush-up-issue-call-to-prayer-via-whatsapp-instead/ https://briefnews.eu/ghana-to-order-mosques-churches-to-hush-up-issue-call-to-prayer-via-whatsapp-instead/#respond Sun, 15 Apr 2018 16:51:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ghana-to-order-mosques-churches-to-hush-up-issue-call-to-prayer-via-whatsapp-instead/

Authorities in the Ghanaian capital Accra have asked mosques and churches to use WhatsApp to transmit the daily calls to prayer rather than using loudspeakers in a bid to curb noise pollution in urban areas.

The local government in Accra is clamping down on noise pollution, particularly at places of worship like churches and mosques, which can generate lots of traffic and general pedestrian noise as crowds of worshippers congregate on the streets, and additional noise pollution from church bells and calls to prayer.

“Why is it that time for prayer cannot be transmitted with text message or WhatsApp? So the Imam would send WhatsApp messages to everybody,” said Environment Minister Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, as cited by Deutsche Welle. “I think that will help to reduce the noise. This may be controversial but it’s something that we can think about.”

“The Imam is not paid monthly. Where would he get the money to be doing that? We try to practice what is possible. So the text message or any other message is not a problem. But I don’t think it is necessary,” Fadama community mosque Imam Sheik Usan Ahmed, told DW.

There have been similar debates around the daily calls to prayer issued by mosques across the world, from Cologne in Germany, to Michigan in the US, and even in the Nigerian capital, Lagos, which shut 70 churches and 20 mosques in 2016 in an attempt to curb noise pollution.

“Enforcement is a continuous exercise and we have set a target for ourselves. We want to ensure that Lagos is noise-free by the year 2020,” Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LEPA) General Manager Bola Shabi said at the time.

The Ghanaian government eventually plans to enforce stricter laws across the country to quieten down urban areas, particularly in the early morning hours. The World Health Organization (WHO) warns that prolonged exposure to environmental noise, like road works, traffic and general street commotion, can lead to an increase in cardiovascular disease, issues with sleep and often some degree of cognitive impairment.

In a test involving 200 mosques in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, 74.8 percent registered noise outputs higher than 85 dB, the threshold at which noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) occurs in occupational settings.

Sound-level tests at a mosque in Dubai produced a reading of 80 decibels (roughly the same volume as a vacuum cleaner) at a distance of 50 meters in an urban area, according to The National. Prolonged exposure to sounds above 86 decibels, roughly equivalent to busy city traffic, can cause hearing loss over time.

Saudi Arabia bans selfies, photos & videos at Islam’s two holiest mosques – reports https://briefnews.eu/saudi-arabia-bans-selfies-photos-videos-at-islams-two-holiest-mosques-reports/ https://briefnews.eu/saudi-arabia-bans-selfies-photos-videos-at-islams-two-holiest-mosques-reports/#respond Sat, 25 Nov 2017 18:48:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/saudi-arabia-bans-selfies-photos-videos-at-islams-two-holiest-mosques-reports/

The Hajj just became a bit less hip: Saudi Arabia has banned pilgrims from taking selfies at Islam’s two holiest mosques, effective immediately, according to Indonesian media.

According to the Jakarta Post, visitors to Mecca’s Masjid al-Haram, known as the Great Mosque of Mecca, and Medina’s Masjid an-Nabawi, or ‘The Prophet’s Mosque,’ will be prohibited from taking photographs or videos at the two holy sites.

Saudi authorities stated that the ban will prevent unnecessary disturbances for those who wish to worship without distractions.

While pilgrims may now be deprived of photographic mementos, security guards at the two holy sites have traditionally always been hostile toward people taking photos, the Jakarta Post noted.

Now that selfies and photographs of all varieties are officially prohibited, security guards have been instructed to “confiscate the photos and the camera if needed,” according to reports.

Historically, Saudi Arabia has had a complicated relationship with selfies.

Last year, Prominent cleric Saleh bin Fawzan al-Fawzan, a member of the powerful Saudi Council of Senior Scholars, denounced those who enjoy “taking pictures with cats,” lamenting that feline photoshoots had been “spreading among people who like to be like the Westerners.”

The revered cleric later clarified that “taking pictures is prohibited if not for a necessity – not with cats, not with dogs, not with wolves, not with anything,” he said.

However, as recently as October, photographic evidence of a serious selfie habit was found on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Instagram account. The Saudi royal had taken an estimated 500 selfies in the span of less than two hours.

‘You can’t let anyone preach’: Germany needs to ‘control’ mosques to fight terrorism – UAE minister https://briefnews.eu/you-cant-let-anyone-preach-germany-needs-to-control-mosques-to-fight-terrorism-uae-minister/ https://briefnews.eu/you-cant-let-anyone-preach-germany-needs-to-control-mosques-to-fight-terrorism-uae-minister/#respond Tue, 14 Nov 2017 21:12:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-cant-let-anyone-preach-germany-needs-to-control-mosques-to-fight-terrorism-uae-minister/ A loose oversight over mosques is what contributes to the rise of Islamist terrorism in Europe, an UAE minister warned. He then called on Germany and its neighbors to introduce stricter regulation over Muslim prayer halls to prevent radicalization.

“You can’t just leave a mosque open and allow anyone to go there and to preach. You need to have licences,” Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al-Nahyan, the minister for tolerance of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), told Germany’s DPA news agency as he commented on the security situation in Europe. He added that the governmental noninvolvement into the activities of religious communities is what has led to the rapid rise of extremism.

Muslims in Germany as well as in the neighboring France, Belgium and the UK had been radicalized exactly due to the fact that authorities in these countries did not pay enough attention to what happened in the mosques on their territory, the minister argued. “Germany and other European states must eventually exert stricter control over such meeting places of Islamists,” he said.

The minister said that the European countries apparently had “good intentions” when they allowed Muslim migrant communities manage their religious issues, including the establishment of mosques and choice of imams, independently. Still, he criticized such approach as ultimately false and dangerous.

Europe must understand that only people who underwent sufficient training, have a profound knowledge of Islam and possess a license, can become imams, Al-Nahyan said, adding all European mosques should be placed under state surveillance. Explaining the idea, brought the example of his own country, where also prayer halls are controlled by the state authorities.

In the UAE, the state exercises “comprehensive” control over mosques while security services have broad powers allowing them to stop radicalization and prevent any terrorist attacks. The minister told dpa that his country repeatedly offered its assistance and experience in the field of managing religious institutions to the European countries but found little enthusiasm on their part.

“We believe that something [similar] should be done in Europe,” Al-Nahyan told dpa. According to the German media, authorities play no role in the appointment of imams. A person also does not need any approval from the state to establish a mosque.

In the meantime, Islamism has long been a source of concern for the German security services. In February 2017, the German domestic security service, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), warned that Islamist extremists were advancing “with impunity” in rural areas of eastern Germany even before the 2015 refugee crisis.

Around the same time, the head of the domestic intelligence service in the German region of Saxony said that Muslim Brotherhood – a Sunni fundamentalist organization – is actively investing into real estate and are trying to “monopolize” mosques in the region to increase its influence. The German media reported in February that about 1,000 members of the Muslim Brotherhood were active in Germany at that time.

In a separate development, in February, it was reported that the German authorities closed down the mosque that was attended by Anis Amri, a 24-year-old Tunisian, who carried out the deadliest terrorist attack in Germany’s recent history.

In December 2016, Amri drove a truck into a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people and injured dozens more in a deliberate attack claimed by Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). Even though the mosque he frequented was under surveillance since at least 2015, it was closed only two months after the attack.

However, all these facts apparently did not persuade the German government that it should change its policy towards mosques, as in April 2017 it dismissed an idea of introducing surveillance over the Muslim prayer halls. The government dismissed the so-called “Islam law” as a “populist crackpot idea.”

The “Islam law” initiative was proposed by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s own party, the Christian Democratic Union, and involved introducing a Muslim registry, language tests for imams and a monitoring system for mosques. Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, rejected the idea by saying that “such a law is not now an issue for government business,” adding that freedom of religion “one of the central freedoms safeguarded by our constitution.”

8 people, including minors, charged in France with plotting attack against mosques, politicians https://briefnews.eu/8-people-including-minors-charged-in-france-with-plotting-attack-against-mosques-politicians/ https://briefnews.eu/8-people-including-minors-charged-in-france-with-plotting-attack-against-mosques-politicians/#respond Sun, 22 Oct 2017 18:08:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/8-people-including-minors-charged-in-france-with-plotting-attack-against-mosques-politicians/

At least 8 people, including three minors, have been charged in France for a “criminal terrorist conspiracy,” prosecutors said. Their intended targets were reportedly mosques, people of North African descent and politicians.

The accused, aged between 17 and 29, had plans to commit violent actions, the Paris prosecutor’s office said, as cited by AFP. The extremists, who were arrested on Tuesday, are accused of having links to notorious Logan Alexandre Nisin, an extreme far-right activist who was arrested in near the city of Marseille in June. He was also a former member of far-right organization Action Francaise Provence based in Marseille.

French authorities found out that the 21-year-old ran a Facebook page glorifying neo-Nazi terrorist Anders Breivik, who killed 77 people and injured over 300 in Norway in 2011.

Nisin’s mother was one of those arrested on Tuesday. However, she was later released.

The accused were a part of Nisin’s group dubbed the Secret Army Organization, or OAS by its French acronym. The organization was a reference to the extremist paramilitary French group during the Algerian war of 1954–62. Its members repeatedly carried out attacks to prevent Algerian independence.

Mosques, “people of North African descent or black people” and “anti-fascist” activists, were among their targets, a source in the police investigation said, as cited by French media.

The group also reportedly planned to target politicians, including French government spokesman Christophe Castaner and former presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

“The organization was planning purchases of weapons and paramilitary training. Some were already trained in shooting,” according to the source.

Nisin’s lawyer Eric Bourlion says that what the man planned was more “a provocation” than “a real attack.”

On Wednesday, the French parliament approved a new controversial anti-terrorism law. It will replace the soon-to-expire two-year state of emergency which was imposed in France to combat terrorism in the wake of the deadly 2015 Paris terrorist attacks, and has been extended six times since. However, the new legislation has prompted fears it will severely limit civil liberties.

Crackdown on Swiss mosques: Safety strategy, discrimination or waste of tax money? (VIDEO DEBATE) https://briefnews.eu/crackdown-on-swiss-mosques-safety-strategy-discrimination-or-waste-of-tax-money-video-debate/ https://briefnews.eu/crackdown-on-swiss-mosques-safety-strategy-discrimination-or-waste-of-tax-money-video-debate/#respond Sun, 01 Oct 2017 02:53:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/crackdown-on-swiss-mosques-safety-strategy-discrimination-or-waste-of-tax-money-video-debate/ Why does the Swiss government want to enforce strict rules and regulations in mosques? Will it have any positive effects on safety in Switzerland? Or does the new bill discriminate against Muslims?

RT invited Nils Fiechter, co-president of the youth wing of the Swiss People’s Party (SVP) and Ajmal Masroor, imam, broadcaster and politician to unpack these contentious issues after the Swiss lower house of the Federal Assembly voted in favor of new legislation, prohibiting all mosques to receive foreign funding or preaching in Arabic.

READ MORE: No foreign financing for Swiss mosques, preaching in national language – lower house

If it becomes law, mosques will have to declare where they get their money from and report how they use it, along with conducting all prayers in one of the country’s four official national languages.

“What we do need to have is of course a measure of responsibility, and this should be self-regulated,” Masroor said. “Government doesn’t need to enforce any rules and regulations, when it comes to speeches, sermons. We don’t do that with churches, we don’t do that with any other faith leaders or institutions. The clerics should be free to speak their mind.”

Masroor believes forcing imams to preach only in local languages is discriminatory and will be a “waste of taxpayers’ money and government’s own time.” He criticized a series of Swiss “draconian anti-muslim laws,” including the ban on the construction of new minarets and ban on the full-face veils.

“In a multicultural pluralistic democracy, such as Switzerland, this to me sound like and appear as secular fundamentalism, if nothing else, overly and extremely discriminatory towards Muslims,” he said.

Nils Fiechter in his turn argued that “this new bill here in Switzerland is not against Muslims – it is against radical Islamic terrorists…”

“In Europe and also in Switzerland we have got a massive problem with radical Islamists – and you have to name that term, ‘radical Islamic terrorism.’ We want that our policemen and our investigators have the possibility to understand what those imams are preaching. If they don’t have the possibility, if they only hear Arabic words, or words they don’t understand, then there is big safety problem for Switzerland.”

Masroor argued that Swiss police in the streets also don’t understand what regular Arab tourists are talking about in the streets, emphasizing that such limitations will be a step towards “criminalizing the Arabic language.”

Nils parried, saying that Switzerland is not part of the EU and has its own independent “safety strategy,” which has so far proved to be quite effective.

“Switzerland until now is one country in Europe that didn’t have a terrorist attack, and we want to keep that situation,” he stated. “Our target is to punish those who don’t accept our law and our order. We are a state, which wants to have strict laws. We don’t want to have radical Islamists get control above those imams, over mosques here in Switzerland.”

Saturday marks the 103rd day in the battle against terrorists in Marawi. On Wednesday, Duterte noted that the liberation of the city is stalled because he had previously stopped a plan to bomb the mosques. To mend the slowdown of army operations against the militants, Duterte allowed the army to decide whether or not to bomb mosques to drive local Islamic State-aligned (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) Maute and Abu Sayyaf terrorist groups out of Marawi City.

“The option is already yours because we cannot have a stalemate for over one year,” he said in a speech that marked the 100th day of fighting against insurgents in Marawi.

“The military had long wanted to bomb the mosque to capture or kill the leaders there, and in the process, sacrifice the hostages who are all Filipinos, maybe Maranaos and a mingling of Christians, Tagalog, there inside,” Duterte said, according to IBT.

But on Friday, Duterte made a U-turn on his offer to target Muslim places of worship. The Philippines leader stressed that the government should consider the cultural and ideological implications of destroying the mosques.

“We cannot destroy the mosque… It will breed an unending hatred,” Duterte said in his speech on Friday, asking “What will it give us in terms of goodwill?”

“I said, ‘No, it will just create more animosity and outright hostility in the government. The Maranaos will not forgive us,’” Duterte said on Friday, the Philippines Inquirer reported.

Prior to Duterte’s speech on Friday, local commanders said they would not bomb terrorists hiding in mosques with hostages inside.

“We will not bomb the mosques where the enemies are hiding along with their hostages. As much as possible, we want to save the lives of hostages,” Capt. Jo-Ann Petinglay, a spokesperson for the military’s Western Mindanao Command, told the Inquirer on Thursday. “If we do that, the problem of extremism will worsen and we will gain more enemies.”

The commander of the 1st Marine Brigade pointed out that the military has avoided targeting Mosques since the counter-terrorist operation began in late May.

“That has made it difficult for us, because we do not bomb or shoot mosques. We really have to preserve [them]. Some were hit by bullets but not because the intention was to destroy it. But in the future, you will see how we tried to preserve the mosques,” Brig. Gen. Milquiades Ordiales told reporters on Thursday.

The fighting has so far claimed the lives of at least 45 civilians and 133 soldiers. The army has eliminated 617 terrorists.

He urged police to establish the motive of the driver and look for possible accomplices.

Speaking to RT some two hours after a white van rammed into pedestrians outside the Muslim Welfare House, which contains a mosque, Kozbar said, citing eyewitnesses that “at least 10 people were lying on the ground” following what he said was “a deliberate attack.”

“I think there are people dead and there are injured people as well,” he said.

“We have to condemn this incident regardless who is behind it and call it as it is – it is a terrorist attack on innocent people,” Kozbar said, comparing it to the recent terrorist attacks in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge.

Kozbar is chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque, associated with the Muslim Welfare House, which is 300 metres from the site of the attack.

He argued that while the attackers implicated in these attacks might harbour different kind of extremist views, they share one common aim which is to “divide our community, to spread hatred, division and racism among our community.”

“We should not let them do this, we should stand all together as a community to condemn such attack and make sure it will never happen again,” he said.

Calling on police to promptly establish the motive of the attacker or attackers, Kozbar said the perpetrator “indiscriminately attacked the people,” noting that not all of them might turn out to be Muslims.

“It is a very diverse community over there. There are many Muslims and non-Muslims alike and it’s unfortunate that this happened in this area,” Kozbar said. He noted that locals of different religious backgrounds “get together” well there and there are “no problem whatsoever between communities.”

Reacting to the articles emerging in some British newspapers that point to the mosque’s past links to the extremist preacher Abu Hamza, who was the imam of the Finsbury Park Mosque before his arrest in 2004, Kozbar noted that since then the mosque has come a long way and has turned into “an example for other mosques.”

“We are 12 years on now and these tabloid media are still talking about this spirit. This is unbelievable,” he said, urging the journalists to refrain from bias in covering the attack.

At the same time, Kozbar acknowledged that Islamophobia is on the rise in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks in the UK.

“We receive calls from people abusing us, threatening us. Some of our community members have been attacked,” he said, adding that while the mosque has a security team in place it did not want police protection during Ramadan, as the armed police presence could have put panic into worshippers.

Police have refrained from publicly assessing the nature of the attack or releasing details about the suspect, despite angry and confused locals demanding that officers share more information with the public.

Counter-terrorism police have reportedly joined the investigation of the incident, The Guardian reported. Police are now seeking to determine whether the incident was a deliberate attack. Meanwhile, a London Metropolitan Police spokesman told CNN that it was “too early” to say if the incident is terror-related.
