The Ottawa Islamic Centre and Assalam Mosque, which is one of the biggest mosques in the Canadian capital, had its charitable status revoked in July, after officials from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) expressed concerns in a report over dodgy financing and a roster of guest speakers who seemed to “promote hate and intolerance.”

“Many of the views expressed by the organization’s speakers are misogynistic, homophobic, racist and/or promote violence,” the CRA Charities Branch wrote in a letter sent to the mosque president and obtained by the Global Times.

The audit covered the mosque’s financial years 2012-2013.

Additional CRA documents seen by the Global Times specifically mention visits by Abu Usamah At-thahabi, Bilal Philips, Hakim Quick and Saed Rageah, all of whom had spoken at the Ottawa mosque one or more times.

While Assalam mosque officials said the CRA had not alleged that any of the guest speakers had made hateful comments while at their mosque, the comments had been made elsewhere.

One speaker, Bilal Philips, was described as “anti-Semitic, intolerant and contrary to integration,” by the CRA, and has been denied entry into several countries including Australia, the UK, Kenya, Bangladesh, the US and Germany.

Another, Usamah At-thahabi, who spoke at three engagements at the mosque between December 2012 and April 2014 has in the past been recorded advocating hateful attitudes.

An undercover investigation into British mosques by the UK’s Channel 4 in 2007, recorded At-thahabi advocating that gays should be thrown “off a mountain,” and that women, “even if she has a PhD” was intellectually inferior to men.

He has also spoken out against non-believers, or kuffar: “Not a single person here from the Muslims loves the kuffar, whether those kuffars are from the UK or from the US. We love the people of lslam and we hate the people of kuffar.”

Mosque officials have since denied that they have been promoting extremism, attributing the trouble to when two hardline board members – Ahmed Hassan and Suleiman Osman Hersi – ran the organization for a number of years after the death of founder Mohamed Rashad Moalimishak in 2009.

During that time Hassan and Hersi booked the speakers, usually without consulting other board members and that now all speakers are pre-screened, according to the Ottawa Citizen.

Calling the CRA’s action “politically motivated”, Mosque treasurer Ali Abdulle described the news as “devastating” to the community.

“It was like an earthquake. But what can we do?”

In addition to the extremist speakers, CRA documents also raised concerns over questionable financing and missing email and phone correspondence at the mosque. In 2012, the mosque paid CND$ 54,000 to individuals for “services rendered” but didn’t issue any T4 tax slips for salaried employees.

In 2013, this more than doubled to over CND$ 118,000 to individuals, again without any issuing of T4s.

Ramadan suicide: Man jumps to his death into crowds at Mecca’s Grand Mosque (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/ramadan-suicide-man-jumps-to-his-death-into-crowds-at-meccas-grand-mosque-video/ https://briefnews.eu/ramadan-suicide-man-jumps-to-his-death-into-crowds-at-meccas-grand-mosque-video/#respond Sat, 09 Jun 2018 14:57:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ramadan-suicide-man-jumps-to-his-death-into-crowds-at-meccas-grand-mosque-video/

A foreigner has jumped off the roof of the Grand Mosque in Mecca and died on the spot, Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported citing local police. Alleged footage of the incident was published by Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah.

The man jumped to his death from at the Grand Mosque on Friday evening, according to the SPA. His body was immediately sent to a local hospital and the investigation into the incident and the man’s motives is ongoing. There were no reports on any other people injured.

Footage allegedly showing the body falling into a crowd of pilgrims meters away from the Kaaba, a cube-shaped structure in the center of Islam’s most important mosque was published by Daily Sabah. The crowd is seen recoiling away from the spot as the man fell.

While the man’s identity has not been announced, there are conflicting reports on the matter. Daily Times says that he was 35 years old, and Daily Sabah reports citing local media that he was a 26-year-old French citizen who converted to Islam.

The incident occurred during the fasting month of Ramadan, when thousands of Muslims flock to the Grand Mosque. Suicide is considered a major sin in Islam.

Last year, a Saudi man was captured by police as he was trying to set himself ablaze near the Kaaba.

Muslim MPs sent ‘Punish a Muslim Day’ letters encouraging mosque bombings https://briefnews.eu/muslim-mps-sent-punish-a-muslim-day-letters-encouraging-mosque-bombings/ https://briefnews.eu/muslim-mps-sent-punish-a-muslim-day-letters-encouraging-mosque-bombings/#respond Tue, 13 Mar 2018 14:04:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/muslim-mps-sent-punish-a-muslim-day-letters-encouraging-mosque-bombings/

Muslim MPs have been sent threatening letters which urge people to carry out acid attacks against Muslims, bomb mosques and pull off hijabs. The ‘Punish A Muslim Day’ letters are being investigated by counter-terrorism officers.

The MPs were also sent packages with a “suspicious substance” inside. Three people were hospitalized on Monday and Tuesday as a precaution before the items were deemed not to be hazardous.

Labour MP for Bedford Mohammad Yasin received a package on Monday. His colleagues, Labour MP for Bethnal Green & Bow Rushanara Ali and Labour MP for Ealing Central and Acton Rupa Huq, have both tweeted to say they received similar packages.

The letters advertise “Punish A Muslim Day,” which included a points system of Islamophobic actions and each of their “rewards.” The sickening point-scoring system ranges from 10 points if you “verbally abuse a Muslim” to 2,500 points if you “nuke Mecca.”

Other acts include 50 points for throwing acid in a Muslim person’s face, 100 points for beating up a Muslim, and 250 points for torturing a Muslim using electrocution, skinning or use of a rack. It offers 500 points for butchering a Muslim using a gun, knife or vehicle, and 1,000 points for bombing or burning a mosque.

The messages were also sent to households across London, Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire.

The sick letter says: “They have hurt you, they have made your loved ones suffer. They have caused you pain and heartache. What are you going to do about it? Are you a ‘sheep’ like the majority of the population?

“Sheep follow orders and are easily led, they are allowing the white majority nations of Europe and North America to become overrun by those who like nothing more than to do us harm and turn our democracies into Sharia-led police states.

“Only you can help turn this thing around, only you have the power. Do not be a sheep!”

Detective Chief Superintendent Martin Snowden, head of Counter Terrorism Policing North East, said the letter is being investigated. “These letters seek to cause fear and offence among our Muslim communities. They also seek to divide us,” he said.

Russia accused of ‘erasing Muslim heritage’ for restoring collapsing Crimean mosque https://briefnews.eu/russia-accused-of-erasing-muslim-heritage-for-restoring-collapsing-crimean-mosque/ https://briefnews.eu/russia-accused-of-erasing-muslim-heritage-for-restoring-collapsing-crimean-mosque/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2018 01:49:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/russia-accused-of-erasing-muslim-heritage-for-restoring-collapsing-crimean-mosque/ Russia has been accused of trying to “erase Crimean Muslim culture” by restoring a local mosque. However, workers at the site say they are saving the historic building from crumbling after years of neglect.

Many sites in the Crimean peninsula remain in poor condition because there were insufficient funds allocated for their upkeep and restoration during the years that the region was part of Ukraine. The Big Khan Mosque of the iconic Bakhchisaray Palace was no exception. However, not everyone was happy when Russia started working in January to prevent the 500-year-old building from collapsing.

On Sunday, Qatari network Al Jazeera published an article about the restoration process, entitled, “Is Russia attempting to erase Crimean Muslim culture?” The author of the piece, Moscow-based journalist Mansur Mirovalev, gave an overdramatic depiction of the construction site, comparing the mosque to a “bandaged patient.”

The article cited Ukrainian officials and the Tatar community’s self-proclaimed leaders, who chose to leave Crimea after it reunited with Russia in 2014. Those who were interviewed called the restoration a “part of Kremlin’s drive to reshape, ban and erase the cultural identity of Crimean Tatars.” A Crimean official during the Ukrainian rule, Edem Dudakov, claimed that “the palace will be lost; what they’re building is a sham.”

However, it seems more likely that the mosque would have been lost to history if the urgent restoration work did not start. The Big Khan Mosque was built in 1532 using wooden materials, which have not passed the test of time. RT Ruptly video agency has visited the site and examined the damaged tiles and dried out beams that were removed from the historic building – the wood was so fragile that it could be broken with bare hands.

The wooden beams “lost their bearing capacity completely,” Aleksandr Yasko, a construction supervisor for the ATTA company, which is carrying out the restoration, said. “They’re doty; damaged by timber beetle. A mycological examination was carried out and it established that the beams are all infected with fungi. It lives there, in 100 percent of the structural beams.”

Yasko emphasized that the historic building is treated with extreme care and showed the tiles that were removed from the roof of the mosque. “Not even a single piece of tile has disappeared. It’s all stored on the territory of the open-air museum as well as the rotten beams.”

Removing the roof tiles was “a very complicated job… as every piece had to go through the hands of several workers. Besides, it had to be taken down from the height of 13 meters,” he said. The mosque has been losing tiles for centuries because the roof, which was redesigned after the 1736 fire, turned out to be too steep. Yasko said that the historic shape of the Big Khan Mosque will remain unchanged after the restoration, but the newly-placed tiles will be equipped with a special fixing system that will prevent them from sliding.

The Big Khan Mosque wasn’t just in poor condition, it also posed a real danger to the people who visited the site. “According to my estimations, the roof would’ve simply collapsed in the next five years and people would’ve been killed,” the foreman said.

Israeli police detain three Turkish citizens at Al-Aqsa Mosque https://briefnews.eu/israeli-police-detain-three-turkish-citizens-at-al-aqsa-mosque/ https://briefnews.eu/israeli-police-detain-three-turkish-citizens-at-al-aqsa-mosque/#respond Sat, 23 Dec 2017 17:15:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/israeli-police-detain-three-turkish-citizens-at-al-aqsa-mosque/

Three Turkish tourists were arrested in Jerusalem over an incident that followed Muslim prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque on Friday, an Israeli police spokesman said. The spokesman didn’t elaborate on the circumstances of the incident, Reuters reports. However, eyewitnesses told Turkish Anadolu news agency that the arrests came after a brawl, caused by Israeli security forces demanding worshipers remove their Turkish flag T-shirts before entering the territory of the mosque. Two of those detained were Belgian-Turkish nationals, the agency added. East Jerusalem, West Bank, and Gaza have been gripped by Palestinian protests since December 6, when US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

No grand mosque in Helsinki: Bahrain-funded proposal ditched by authorities https://briefnews.eu/no-grand-mosque-in-helsinki-bahrain-funded-proposal-ditched-by-authorities/ https://briefnews.eu/no-grand-mosque-in-helsinki-bahrain-funded-proposal-ditched-by-authorities/#respond Fri, 15 Dec 2017 18:16:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/no-grand-mosque-in-helsinki-bahrain-funded-proposal-ditched-by-authorities/ Authorities in Helsinki have denied a Muslim foundation permission to secure land for a grand mosque in the city, expressing concern about the funding of the project – which would have come from the Gulf Kingdom of Bahrain.

The Oasis Center, which was to be located in an old industrial area, would have had room for 1,200 worshipers, as well as a Moorish-themed garden, sports facilities and a community center open to the public. But the Urban Environment Division of the City of Helsinki unanimously voted to reject the proposal on Tuesday, declining permission for a patch of land to be set aside in the Hanasaari area for the complex.

The main reason behind the city’s refusal was the source of money for the project, which had earlier been pledged by the Bahraini royal family.

“The scope of the project under consideration and the open questions and uncertainties surrounding it – namely, the origin of the funding and the possible effects of the sources of funding – do not form a sustainable basis for carrying out the proposal,” the UED said in a statement quoted by the Helsinki Times.

Although Finnish authorities were not opposed to the mosque in principle, the news that it would be built with Bahraini money unsettled officials, including Tarja Mankkinen, the head of the Ministry of the Interior’s anti-radicalization program, and Helsinki’s Mayor Jan Vapaavuori. Bahrain, a Shia-majority kingdom in the Persian Gulf, is ruled by a Sunni royal family with close ties to the other Gulf countries and Saudi Arabia, which follow a strict version of Sunni Islam. Bahrain’s harsh clampdowns on Shia protesters and dissidents have drawn severe criticism from human rights groups.

“The role of the actors who fund the mosque and its activities might consist a [security] risk if it decreases the feeling of belonging to the Finnish society among the Muslim population,” Mankkinen told the Middle East Eye back in May.

“I am delighted that we managed to unanimously block the so-called Grand Mosque project. Together we showed that Helsinki is not anti-Islamic or against Muslims, but on the other hand, neither is the city blue-eyed in its naivety,” Atte Kaleva, a local politician, wrote on Facebook after the vote.

As elsewhere in Europe, recent years have seen growing concern about radicalization and extremism. Earlier this year, two women were stabbed to death in Turku, in what is considered to have been the first terrorist attack on Finnish soil. Finland, an otherwise safe country, has produced a higher percentage of foreign fighters for Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) per population than anywhere else in the world.

The same issues have been voiced by members of Finland’s Shia community.

Pia Jardi, the chairwoman of the Finnish Muslim Union and the project manager of the Oasis Foundation, has denied that the mosque would propagate an extremist ideology and has vowed to keep the project going, building the site elsewhere if needed.

“If Helsinki doesn’t have the willingness, why should we help [it] with this kind of a project,” she told the Helsingin Sanomat on Thursday.

Planned mass shooting at Florida mosque foiled by police https://briefnews.eu/planned-mass-shooting-at-florida-mosque-foiled-by-police/ https://briefnews.eu/planned-mass-shooting-at-florida-mosque-foiled-by-police/#respond Mon, 04 Dec 2017 23:38:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/planned-mass-shooting-at-florida-mosque-foiled-by-police/

Police have arrested a 69-year-old man who they said was planning a mass shooting at an Islamic Center in Jacksonville, Florida. The suspect is a Philippines national and a Green Card holder.

Bernandino Gawala Bolatete came under investigation by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the Jacksonville FBI after a source tipped them off in October. The source told police Bolatete had expressed anti-Islamic views, Sheriff Mike Williams said in a press conference on Monday.

According to the informant, Bolatete reportedly said that he wanted to carry out a mass shooting at the Islamic Center of Northeast Florida. The sheriff’s office said an undercover detective met with Bolatete and was able to confirm what the source had said.

Bolatete made plans to carry out the shooting, which included getting weapons, Sheriff Williams said. He asked the undercover officer to make arrangements to get a silencer delivered to his home on December 1. Bolatete said he didn’t want any paperwork associated with the silencer sale, WJAX reports.

“The suspect is facing a federal charge under the National Firearms Act of knowingly receiving and possessing a firearm not registered to him,”said FBI Special Agent Charles Spencer. “This investigation is ongoing and there may be more charges.”

Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office SWAT team raided his home as the delivery arrived at his home. US border patrol was also at the scene.

Bolatete was a Philippines national and a US permanent resident, Spencer said. He was taken into the custody of the FBI. Authorities searched his home for weapons, but Spencer would not elaborate on what they found.  The mosque was then informed about the foiled plot and ongoing investigation.

Brigitte Macron, 64, was spotted covering her head as a mark of respect as she entered a mosque in Abu Dhabi.

The First Lady of France, as she’s been dubbed by fans, was pictured arriving at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque wearing all white.

Sheikh Zayed Grand is considered to be the key site for worship in the country – and was designed by Yousef Abdelky.

Macron wore a respectful white full-length suit with a stunning cream silk stripe down the leg.

The suit jacket was buttoned up and she wore a matching white silk top beneath the outfit.

Mushroom velvet heels matched a glamorous leopard print scarf which, for the most part, was draped over her shoulders.

Inside the mosque, Brigitte wore the scarf over her head respecting the rules of the environment.

At 69, the French national shows no signs of slowing down her glamorous style with thick false eyelashes worn upon a golden glowing tanned face.

First Lady of the United States Melania appears to have upped the sex appeal on her Asia tour after stepping out in a see-through dress.

She flashed a hint of chest in South Korea yesterday, and later in China she covered her bosom, but her bare tanned legs were on show.

This is the US Presidents first trip to the country.

The pair are due to land in Vietnam today – and the fashion world is waiting with bated breath to see Melania’s latest outfits.
