Mortal Engines unites two of the greatest performers of big (and small) screen villains in modern cinema. Lang terrified and enraged audiences as the vile Colonel in Avatar, while Weaving has disturbed and quietly horrified audiences in the Matrix movies and Patrick Melrose. So, it’s rather a delight to get them cuddling up and even holding hands as we talk about their roles in Peter Jackson’s latest blockbuster. Based on the hit books by Phillip Reeves, Lang plays the reanimated man/monster Shrike with Weaving bring his usual unsettling charm to warmonger Thaddeus Valentine. I boldly tell Lang how much I hated him in Avatar while Weaving often plays more complex characters who slip in the knife when you’re not looking. Lang smiles: “Oh that hurts. I thought I was charming” But we soon talk about how his relentless cyborg killer Shrike may actually be the most ‘human’ character of all and Lang adds: “Without a soul but he has as much soul as Aretha.” Shrike is an incredible figure, initially horrifying but slowly the audience learns his own tragic and heartbreaking past. It is typical of a film that gradually peels back layers to present ever more complex truths. Scenes of heart-pounding chases, the awe-inspiring spectacle of a steampunk London on wheels or beautiful panoramas of cities in the clouds are mixed with the unsettling aspects of human nature we might sometimes try to ignore. We can’t avoid the topic of how timely Mortal Engines appears, as humanity gobbles its resources and nations increasingly seem to distrust one another. A scene where conquered migrants are told their children may be taken away is an unmistakable commentary on the recent events in the US. Should Hollywood movies be involved in social or moral judgements? Lang says: “So many films and books preach to the converted. One of things marvellous about this film is that it can have a very wide appeal. There is a lot of social relevance to this catastrophic world we seem to be inhabiting. “At the same time it’s a hell of a yarn. “That way you speak to as many people as possible, if you can sucker punch in a message in a subversive way.” Weaving says: “If you make films you can’t help make comment and reflect the world you live in. If you try to hit a nail too hard over the head, no-one likes that. Anything that is didactic is not art, it’s not interesting. It’s opinionising or ideology. It’s much more interesting to try and express who we are and through that there are all sort of relevant revelations.” Lang talks about what he loves most about the movie: “It’s inhabited by young people who exhibit courage and resourcefulness and they are dealing with the world as they know it, just as young people today are dealing with the world they are given. “If you’re looking for a message, sure, it’s one of hope and ‘get it done.’ If you’re not satisfied with the world, change it.” MORTAL ENGINES IS OUT NOW

A scientist has up and made a ton of monsters AND a fog that is steadily consuming the world, yet somehow doesn’t seem to see any problems with this. That’s where our long-haired, poorly-equipped hero comes in, one who players will guide while exploring the countryside and the scientist’s hideout and arm with the items they find along the way in Mortal Manor.
Mortal Manor gives players a great deal of areas to comb through as they work to stop the scientist’s cranky creations. These monsters, all somewhat silly-looking but still quite hostile, can be taken out with an array of different weapons players can collect, or they can be avoided outright using the handful of relics that increase the player’s mobility. Double jumps, slides, and a grappling hook are just some of the ways players will be able to move around, letting them quickly bypass these irritable experiments.
Mortal Manor aims to be a challenging experience filled with secrets, offering players many neat gadgets to play with as they work to apply some rules and regulations on a scientist who clearly needs some boundaries set for him.
Mortal Manor is available for $ 6.99 on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Dogless Head Games, you can follow them on YouTube and Twitter.

Ready for more YA dystopia? The Peter Jackson-produced Mortal Engines just dropped its eerie new teaser trailer online, featuring the city of London itself attached to giant Mad Max: Fury Road-style machinery. Christian Rivers helms this slice of post-apocalyptic extravaganza, with a script by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens. Watch the Mortal Engines trailer is below.
Just when you thought Young Adult dystopian adaptations were on the way out, Lord of the Rings filmmaker Peter Jackson ushers in the big screen adaptation of Mortal Engines. Adapted from the book of the same name by Philip Reeve, Mortal Engines is set thousands of years in the future after nuclear war has destroyed most of society as we know it. With almost no resources remaining, cities are built to become mobile – scavenging the wasteland and doing battle with each other. It’s like a pirate movie, with mobile cities serving as the pirate ships. The surprisingly spooky first Mortal Engines trailer gives us a glimpse of the mayhem to come.
This trailer looks surprisingly promising, even though it does once again use the tired trailer trope of a slowed-down song to convey creepiness. But I won’t lie: I’m kind of burned-out on dystopian YA adaptations, and was kind of hoping that Maze Runner: Whatever It’s Called would be the last of this sub-genre for a while. But the concept of Mortal Engines, along with the visuals on display in this teaser, suggest that maybe, just maybe, Jackson and company have put together something interesting. Here’s the official synopsis:
Thousands of years after civilization was destroyed by a cataclysmic event, humankind has adapted and a new way of living has evolved. Gigantic moving cities now roam the Earth, ruthlessly preying upon smaller traction towns. Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan)—who hails from a Lower Tier of the great traction city of London—finds himself fighting for his own survival after he encounters the dangerous fugitive Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar). Two opposites, whose paths should never have crossed, forge an unlikely alliance that is destined to change the course of the future.
Mortal Engines is a big reunion for the makers of Lord of the Rings – writers Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens all had a hand in creating that trilogy (and the Hobbit films, but we’re just going to ignore them, okay?), and Mortal Engines director Christian Rivers, making his directorial debut here, served as a visual effects supervisor on the Rings series. And then there’s actor Hugo Weaving (not seen in this trailer), once again showing up for a Jackson production. Hopefully, they’ll all be able to transfer the magic they captured in the Lord of the Rings films over to this.
Mortal Engines opens December 14, 2018.

‘Mortal Kombat’s’ 1997
Was the Opposite
of a Flawless Victory
Matt Gerardi,
AV Club
The Mortal Kombat franchise was riding high… and then 1997 rolled around. AV Club takes a look at the hot streak before the release of two games and a movie in the fall of that year. All three fell flat. That trio of shortcomings didn’t kill the franchise completely, but it did enough damage to end Mortal Kombat’s reign atop the video game world.

Injustice 2 was known to be including some characters from Netherrealm’s other games and now more official launch details have been revealed.
The Injustice 2 Sub Zero release date was confirmed today for Summer 2017, meaning fans expect more footage and Watchtower streams covering the subject soon.
The Mortal Kombat DLC fighter will be available from July, and will include a lot of the moves seen in earlier titles.
One big change is that Sub Zero will also have access to a new ice clone ability, which was shown during an E3 2017 WB livestream.
More actions from the new fighter can also be found in the newly launched Injustice 2 trailer, which looks set to be followed by another livestream event on Thursday, June 15.
While we don’t have a set day for the release, you can expect that Season Pass owners will get first access, followed by everyone else a week later.
“We did the same thing with Scorpion in the first Injustice game,” Boon revealed during a presentation today.
“We really wanted to see how an Injustice version of a Mortal Kombat player [would] fit into the game.”
Sub-Zero is a lethal cryomancer and leader of the reformed Lin Kuei clan. When Sub-Zero was younger, the Lin Kuei were corrupted and destroyed from within, staining their honor.
“Now serving as Grandmaster, Sub-Zero vows to redeem that honor, pledging to defend the realm from threats near, far, and beyond,” the official character description explains.
“In the intergalactic menace Brainiac, Sub-Zero sees a threat to all worlds, and perhaps his greatest opportunity for redemption yet.”
Injustice: Gods Among Us also included a MK fighter, Scorpio, with Sub Zero’s getting his new look from the same designer, comic book artist Jim Lee.
“Jim Lee is one of the co-publishers at DC and he’s also an amazing artist, so we just wanted to go full circle with that and have a DC Comics representation of a Mortal Kombat character,” Boon added.
Sub Zero is part of Fighter Pack DLC 1, which also adds Red Hood and Starfire.
Author Phillip Reeve’s four-part Predator Cities book series isn’t messing around when it comes to its title: in the future depicted in the novels, cities have become actual predators. Every city on Earth is now on wheels, constantly cruising around looking for smaller cities to consume and absorb.
The first book in that series, Mortal Engines, is getting a film adaptation from producer Peter Jackson and some of his The Lord of the Rings collaborators, and now Jackson has shared the first piece of Mortal Engines concept art with fans.
Jackson revealed the artwork on his Facebook page. Click on the image below to take a closer look:
That’s one of the big cities churning its way across a wasteland as Hester Shaw, one of the protagonists, looks on. If you look closely, you can also see some aircraft circling above in the clouds. Anyone who’s watched the behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of The Lord of the Rings knows that Jackson and his team adore making and sharing concept art, so I imagine this is the first piece of many that we’ll see before the film hits theaters.
Last year, the filmmaker announced this project and described a bit of the plot.
If you haven’t read the books, you should. They present a stunning look into the future, when all of Earth’s major cities are now mounted on wheels, roaming across the landscape as massive “Traction Cities”. Our society has build itself on the principals of Municipal Darwinism – this basically involves the bigger cities hunting down, and consuming, the smaller ones. And that’s only the backdrop to an original and emotional personal story.
Philip Reeve has created a range of intriguing characters, following their adventures in our strange future world through four books – “Mortal Engines”, “Predator’s Gold”, “Infernal Devices” and “A Darkling Plain”.
The moment we read these novels, we knew what exciting movies they’d make. I literally can’t wait to see them!
The “we” he mentions there include his wife and producing partner Fran Walsh, as well as Philippa Boyens; all three of them wrote The Lord of the Rings movies together, and they took on writing duties for Mortal Engines as well. Jackson and Walsh will produce, while Boyens will co-produce. Christian Rivers, who won an Oscar for his work on the visual effects for Jackson’s King Kong, is making his directorial debut here.
Last month, LOTR alum Hugo Weaving joined the cast, which also includes Stephen Lang (Avatar), Robbie Sheehan (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones), Hera Hilmar (who’s playing Hester, the female lead pictured in this concept art) and Ronan Raftery (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them).
Mortal Engines opens in theaters on December 14, 2018.

The upcoming film adaptation of Mortal Engines is something of a Lord of the Rings reunion for the film’s writer and producer, Peter Jackson. One of the stars of Jackson’s beloved trilogy, Hugo Weaving, has joined the cast, which he wrote with Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Christian Rivers, who will direct the film.
Variety doesn’t have any details on Weaving’s role in the fantasy movie, which is based on Philip Reeve‘s four-part Predator Cities series. Weaving, who played the elf Elrond in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies, joins a cast that already includes Stephen Lang (Don’t Breathe), Robbie Sheehan (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) and Ronan Raftery (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them).
The book is set a thousand years from now in a not-so-bright future when cities travel the world on huge wheels. The cities consume one another for resources, and London is on the hunt.
The moving city of London is the story’s main setting, where the poor live at the bottom and the rich live at the top. The post-apocalyptic tale’s protagonist, Tom Natsworthy, faces a greater threat than hungry cities rolling around, though. Here’s the first book’s synopsis:
Welcome to the astounding world of Predator Cities! London is hunting again. Emerging from its hiding place in the hills, the great Traction City is chasing a terrified little town across the wastelands. Soon, London will feed. In the attack, Tom Natsworthy is flung from the speeding city with a murderous scar-faced girl. They must run for their lives through the wreckage–and face a terrifying new weapon that threatens the future of the world. Beloved storyteller Philip Reeve creates a brilliant new world in the Predator Cities series, called “phenomenal…violent and romantic, action-packed and contemplative, funny and frightening” by the Sunday Times.
Jackson and Walsh acquired the rights to the book all the way back in 2001. Now, it’s finally ready to go before cameras. Rivers will begin shooting Mortal Engines in New Zealand this summer.
Back in 2009, it was speculated Jackson would direct the adaptation himself, but Rivers, a longtime collaborator of Jackson’s, took the job. Mortal Engines is his feature directorial debut, but previously he shot second unit work for The Hobbit movies and Pete’s Dragon, worked as a storyboard artist on Dead Alive, and won an Academy Award for King Kong‘s visual effects.
Mortal Engines opens in theaters December 14, 2018.
