Symptoms of listeria monocytogenes infection

What are the signs of this illness to look out for? 

The NHS lists symptoms of listeriosis as “a high temperature of 38C or above, aches and pains, chills, feeling sick or vomiting and diarrhoea.”

They are described as “flu-like” and are usually only mild and can be treated at home.

Those who are pregnant are worry they might have listeriosis should contact their midwife as a matter of urgency as it can cause serious problems.

What is Listeria?

Listeria is a bacteria. It’s full name is listeria monocytogenes and it causes an illness named listeriosis.

Listeriosis symptoms are mainly those of food poisoning or flu, including vomiting and diarrhoea, as well as a stiff neck.

The disease can go away within a few days, but poses particular threat to those with a compromised immune system.

A total of nine people in Europe have now died from the disease, two of whom were from the UK.

“What could be a better present for a whisky lover than a giant bottle of whisky?”

But the deals don’t stop there. 

The supermarket is also selling a giant 1.75L bottles of Jägermeister and Disaronno for Black Friday for just £30.

Morrisons is also selling a giant 4.5kg bar of Toblerone that’s 12 times the size of the original bar. 

The Swiss chocolate bar costs £57 and is likely to be a hot favourite in store. 

Shoppers will have to hurry though – stock is limited and when they’re gone, they’re gone!

Similarly, Amazon is selling a huge 4.5KG Toblerone on Black Friday – the deal is a whopping 30% off 4.5kg of Toblerone.

Britain’s Best Value Supermarket has been announced at the Moneywise Home Finance Awards 2017.

Aldi took the prize last year and the year before – but have they done it for a third year running?

Tesco, Morrisons and Asda have all faced stiff competition in recent years from the German supermarket, which itself competes with Lidl.

This award is voted for via a survey of thousands of Moneywise readers, and the British public have once again spoken.

Once again, Aldi is their top choice based on value for money and customer service.

According to research by the supermarket, shoppers have saved an estimated £2.2billion this year by switching to them from the Big Four.

A recent independent analysis by trade magazine The Grocer showed Aldi to be the UK’s lowest priced supermarket.

A basket of 33 everyday items cost £7.92 less at Aldi compared to its nearest-priced competitor Asda, and £16.84 less compared to its most expensive rival, Waitrose, the magazine found.

Speaking about the supermarket’s latest win, Julie Ashfield, Joint Managing Director of Corporate Buying at Aldi, said: “We are thrilled to have been voted Britain’s Best Value Supermarket at this year’s Moneywise Home Finance Awards for the third year running.

“We are committed to ensuring that everyone has access to great quality products at fantastic prices, and this is a testament to the hard work of Aldi buyers who tirelessly source the very best products for our customers to enjoy.”

This is the second accolade in recent weeks Aldi have won after being voted top by the British public.

It was voted the nation’s Favourite Supermarket at this year’s Good Housekeeping Food Awards in September.

It took the top spot against against competition from Sainsbury’s and Waitrose.

The award, which has been running for over a decade, allows Good Housekeeping readers to vote for their most loved supermarket, taking into account value for money, general shopping atmosphere, and crucially, quality of products.

The store has also been named Favourite Wine Retailer at Good Housekeeping Food Awards.

Aldi has also recently won Multiple Wine Retailer of the Year at the Drinks Retailing Awards.

Morrisons is one of the first major UK supermarkets to make sure all the fresh meat it sells is British. 

The decision, which was announced Thursday, means the retailer will no longer sell fresh lamb from New Zealand and Australia, which is previously stocked during the winter and early spring months. 

Over two thirds of the food it sells is already British compared to a national average of 52 per cent, which includes British beef, chicken, ham, pork, sausages, duck and turkey. 

Rob Youngson, Meat Director at Morrisons, speaking at the Great Yorkshire Show on Thursday, said: “Customers tell us that they want more homegrown food as we are listening. 

“We have always been committed to selling British meat and today we are taking this a stage further by making a clear pledge that if you buy fresh meat at Morrisons it will be British.” 

Morrison has said it will be able to make its commitment to supplying only British fresh meat because it deals directly with farmers, rather than buying from intermediaries. 

In May this year, the Co-op became the first UK retailer to sell British-only fresh meat as it aimed to boost sales in the era of Brexit.

The high street retailer said it would ban Danish bacon and New Zealand lamb from its shelves to ensure customers could trust they are buying fresh British meat. 

The Co-op’s Retail Chief Executive Jo Whitfield said at the time: “British consumers will be shocked to see how meat imports have grown while at the same time retailers hang out the bunting and claim to back British farmers.

“Only the Co-op offers 100% British fresh meat all year round and not just in the meat cabinet but also in our sandwiches, our pies and our ready meals.

“We can do this because we’re owned by members not shareholders and can invest long-term in what matters to communities, not what provides the fastest shareholder return. I call on other retailers and food providers to do more to help our farmers, particularly as they head towards uncertain times.”

More than £5bn worth of meat is shipped to the UK from EU member states, according to Co-op with around £1.45bn coming from Ireland and almost a tenth arriving from Denmark.

Countries in Asia and Australasia account for £804 million worth of imports, followed by Latin America at £345m.

Almost a tenth of all meat imports come from Denmark, which exports £550m of meat into Britain each year, while New Zealand lamb accounts for £291m worth of UK imports.

While supermarkets have been making big changes such as this, Great British Menu judge Matthew Fort revealed in an exclusive interview last year that Brexit won’t change Brits love of food.

He said: “We’ll still go on loving Italian, French, Greek and Spanish food as we always have.”

Discount superstore Morrisons has been voted the worst shop on the UK high street according to Which? users. 

Customer scores given are based on satisfaction and the likelihood of recommending each shop, and Which? revealed those that you should avoid visiting. 

Which? asked more than 10,000 consumers about their shopping experience at 100 major retailers.

Unfortunately the discount stores faired worst with the likes of Poundland and Poundstretcher both making the list. 

Worst rated shops on the UK high street rated on customer satisfaction and likelihood of recommending to a friend, out of 100:

Morrisons – 55 per cent

WH Smith – 56 per cent

Poundland – 59 per cent

Poundstretcher – 60 per cent

Peacocks – 61 per cent

Vodafone – 61 per cent

EE – 61 per cent

Clinton Cards – 62 per cent

JD Sports – 62 per cent

Sainsbury’s – 62 per cent

The Which? survey also ranked the best shopping on the high street.

DIY store Toolstation is joint-top for the second year running (having shared first place with John Lewis in 2016), while Richer Sounds is in the number one spot after coming joint-third last year. 

The electrical chain last topped the Which? survey in 2011.

Harvey Nichols has jumped from 21st place last year to third place this time around, with customers citing a love of its products as well as the stores themselves.

Waterstones returns to the top five for the first time since 2014. The book retailer is welcomed back into the top bracket of the Which? shopping survey on the back of recent news that book sales reached a record £3.5 billion last year.
