ARIES (March 21st – April 20th)

The New Moon on the 9th puts strain on a close relationship. Just when you thought you were making a breakthrough with a romantic or business partner, an argument breaks out. You’ve been spending too much time on your career. Until you change your priorities, it will be impossible to gain your friend’s trust. When you really care about someone, you’ll find a way to spend quality time together. On the 24th, the Full Moon could bring an influx of income. Use this money to treat yourself to something you’ve set your heart on and wanted for a long time. When you reward yourself for working hard, your job stops seeming so burdensome. If you have enough money saved, you might decide to undergo a career change. Launching your own business, running for political office or moving into another industry are among the possibilities. Use your financial cushion as a launch pad for bigger and better things.

TAURUS (April 21st – May 21st)

Despite your best efforts, it will be difficult to get organised on the 9th. That’s when a tense New Moon keeps calling you away from your duties. A demanding manager or expert will keep asking you to make small changes on a project. If you’re working on a commission basis, you’ll have to put an end to these incessant calls. It’s better to lose their business than be at the beck and call of their whims. If you have a health setback during the first half of the month, scale back your schedule. You’re trying to do too much in too narrow a window of time. The Full Moon on the 24th invites you to enjoy some self-pampering. Instead of pouring all your energy into a close relationship, do something nice for yourself. Take a few days off work, get a massage and visit your favourite nature spot. The sight of birds, flowers and trees has a therapeutic effect.

GEMINI (May 22nd – June 21st)

On the 9th, the New Moon puts you in the path of romance. Although the lure of a creative person is powerful, you should hesitate before getting involved in a serious relationship. While it’s true you have many interests in common, there is a big difference between you. You’re not especially materialistic, while the object of your affection is obsessed with money. This rift will cause real problems. Take the time to get to know each other; you will have second thoughts. If you’re already in relationship, your partner will reveal some upsetting financial information during the first half of October. Put your heads together to craft a plan for paying off a sizable debt. On the 24th, the Full Moon will bring a welcome chance to rest and recharge your batteries. If an appointment or trip is cancelled at the last minute, don’t complain. Instead, treat it as a chance to relax.

CANCER (June 22nd – July 23rd)

The New Moon on the 9th warns against confiding in an untrustworthy person. A relative who pretends to have your best interests at heart is really jealous. After sharing sensitive information with them, you could be betrayed. It’s better to write in a private diary that is kept in a secured place. The last thing you want is your personal business to be revealed in a public forum. Some people use shaming as a way to control others. Don’t let this happen to you. The Full Moon on the 24th brings a group project to its successful conclusion. Much to your surprise, you’ll be named most valuable player. The other members of the group appreciate your leadership ability. Instead of barking out orders, you learned how to best motivate each person. As a result, everybody felt valued and appreciated. It’s no wonder your work was so impressive; people are motivated to do their best when they’re happy.

LEO (July 24th – August 23rd)

Acquiring a skill will be more difficult than expected on the 9th. That’s when the New Moon puts you in the path of a relentless critic. It will be hard to study with their disdainful voice in your ear. Stay as far away from this cynic as possible. If you’re having difficulty mastering complicated concepts, be patient. Hire a tutor who is able to isolate the source of your trouble. With their help, you’ll be able to push past this stubborn block and achieve mastery. On the 24th, the Full Moon marks an impressive turning point in your career. You’ll be given a promotion or high profile position. This will come as a total surprise. It’s been hard to know where you stand with an impassive employer. Finally, you’ll discover just how much your boss really appreciates your contributions. Have fun at a party that is thrown in your honour.

VIRGO (August 24th – September 23rd)

The New Moon attracts a moneymaking opportunity on the 9th. Taking this job will limit your personal life. You’ll spend virtually all your time at the office, trying to satisfy a demanding client or supervisor. If you really need the money, it’s worth accepting this job. If you have other options, it would be best to pursue them, even if they pay less. You can’t put a price on your mental health. The Full Moon on the 24th finds you returning from a trip, finishing an ongoing project or collecting a diploma. There will be a surprise bonus for your hard work. You might get a chance to lead a group or write a column. Being able to share your insight with an enthusiastic audience will be the answer to a prayer. You love being paid for exploring ideas. Someone with your brain power needs a job that engages the intellect.

LIBRA (September 24th – October 23rd)

You yearn to break out of your shell on the 9th, when the New Moon prompts a personal change. Your family won’t be supportive of your desire to pursue a particular career, move to a different neighbourhood or take up another belief system. Instead of asking their approval, go ahead and follow your heart’s desire. It may be necessary to cut yourself off from financial support as a means to become more independent. You will have to scrape and save for a while, but that’s better than remaining under a relative’s thumb. The Full Moon on the 24th brings a cheque and bonus that is much bigger than you expected. An appreciative client, customer or patient will throw in a bonus for your hard work. Use this windfall to upgrade some technical equipment. Getting a better car, computer or smartphone will make daily life much easier. Take advantage of a last-minute sale.

SCORPIO (October 24th – November 22nd)

The New Moon on the 9th makes you yearn for privacy. Unfortunately, a relative or neighbour keeps trying to pry into your personal business. It would be wise to invest in some security equipment. Lock up your personal belongings when you’re at work, increase your password protection and don’t leave your smartphone where it can be easily accessed. Some people cannot be trusted. If embarrassing information does come to light, think about filing a police report. The perpetrator is counting on you to be too embarrassed to alert the authorities. Call their bluff. On the 24th, your romantic or business partner will have some surprising news. A big promotion or hefty raise will increase your standard of living. If you’re single, you won’t be for long. Meeting someone special at a gourmet restaurant, garden show or luxury boutique is a strong possibility. You’ll fight hard and fast for the object of your affection.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23rd – December 21st)

On the 9th, the New Moon will spark a group project. This venture will not pay very well. To add insult to injury, you’ll find your indecisive colleagues highly unpleasant. You’re perfectly willing to collaborate, but at some point, someone will have to assume leadership. If you take the helm, you’ll have to deal with a great deal of anger and resentment. It may be better to steer clear of this assignment altogether. If you can’t, don’t waste a lot of time and energy on this work. Some situations aren’t worth the trouble; this is one of them. The Full Moon on the 24th is perfect for getting organised. Getting rid of clutter will make space for new energy in your life. Make three piles: Donate, discard and sell. If you’ve been hanging on to items that evoke unhappy memories, give them to somebody who appreciates them. Out with the old and in with the new.

CAPRICORN (December 22nd – January 20th)

A professional opportunity will beckon on the 9th, but think carefully before accepting it. A conflicted New Moon will force you to choose between having a wildly successful career and a comfortable home life. If you don’t want to spend every spare moment at the office, pass up this offer and wait for a better one. If you’re happy with your current position, you might be forced to take a leave of absence. Attending to a personal matter won’t wait a minute longer. Getting treatment for an addition, undergoing a surgical procedure or taking time away to reassess your priorities are among the possibilities. The Full Moon on the 24th marks an exciting turning point in your personal life. You might decide to get engaged or married on the spur of the moment. There’s also a chance you’ll get word of an unexpected pregnancy. Whatever the nature of this surprise, it will be a happy one.

AQUARIUS (January 21st – February 19th)

The New Moon on the 9th will bring an enticing opportunity to travel, study or write. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to make the most of this chance. An expired passport or tight enrolment window will force you to postpone plans for another time. Instead of dwelling on your disappointment, try making the best of a bad situation. Studying a foreign language will make a future trip much easier. If you want to take an advanced course, this would be a good time to brush up on basics you haven’t studied for years. On the 24th, there will be unexpected changes at home. You might have to relocate for work. Alternatively, your household could expand to include a child or older relative. Any newcomers will give your home life a cosy, comfortable feeling that is grounding. Instead of wanting to go out every night, you’ll prefer spending time with your nearest and dearest.

PISCES (February 20th – March 20th)

A physical relationship forces you to make a decision on the 9th. That’s when the New Moon causes someone very close to you to question your feelings towards them. Spending all your time with friends makes them feel neglected. It’s time to change your priorities. If you’re single, resist the temptation to steer a platonic relationship into passionate waters. Although your loved one is very attractive, you aren’t suited to each other as a couple. Surprising news will reach your ears on the 24th, when the Full Moon brings hidden information to light. It will be such a relief to know that a community matter has been successful resolved. You’ve always been a pioneer for justice. Now resources are more evenly allocated among your neighbours, you can turn your attention to more fulfilling pursuits. Take an art class, go to a concert or read for pleasure. Avoid getting caught in a rut during the second half of October.

UK Property: Average house prices see largest monthly drop in six years https://briefnews.eu/uk-property-average-house-prices-see-largest-monthly-drop-in-six-years/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-property-average-house-prices-see-largest-monthly-drop-in-six-years/#respond Fri, 31 Aug 2018 14:34:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-property-average-house-prices-see-largest-monthly-drop-in-six-years/

But all things are relative, as when one looks more closely at the data, it realistically indicates the usual softening of prices at this time of year, with a decrease of 0.5 per cent in August on the previous month, but a year on year increase of two per cent, with the average UK property value now £214,745 versus £210,495 for the same period in 2017.

A small cooling in house prices in August is normal, and looking back over the last ten years at varying data sources, a 0.5 percent month on month decrease is nothing out of the ordinary.

It’s only if this were followed by a continued, significant fall in prices in September and October, traditionally one of the busier times in the UK property market, that one might suggest the tempo of the market had shifted.

However, for now, the picture remains relatively stable, as Robert Gardner, Nationwide’s Chief Economist suggested: “Annual house price growth remains within the fairly narrow range of circa two to three per cent which has prevailed over the past 12 months, suggesting little change in the balance between demand and supply in the market.

“Looking further ahead, much will depend on how broader economic conditions evolve, especially in the labour market, but also with respect to interest rates.”

Robert continued: “Overall, we continue to expect house prices to rise by around one per cent over the course of 2018.”

Others in the industry are also unruffled by such a month on month cooling in prices. Jeremy Leaf, former RICS residential chairman, remains sanguine and said: “The widely-respected Nationwide figures confirm much of what we have seen on the ground over the last month or so; in other words, a market softening a little further in view of the slowing demand over the summer, which was to be expected.

“However, we are seeing no signs of any major changes and in fact, over the last few weeks we have seen more interest in property again which could well transfer into an increase in sales agreed during September and October.”

For sale signs

Founder of online estate agency Emoov Russell Quirk offered his contrasting and slightly less optimistic viewpoint on today’s figures, saying that they highlight “Another slowing in the rate of UK house price growth, and one that continues an unpredictable year where market performance is concerned.

“This is the largest monthly decline in over six years and while the monthly measurement can be erratic it highlights the volatility of the current landscape.”

Russell continued: “This is largely due to the subdued level of activity from both buyers and sellers with even the slightest spike impacting the top line figures.”

In real terms though, what does this mean if you’re currently trying to sell – or buy – a property?

Brian Murphy, Head of Lending for Mortgage Advice Bureau explained: “Today’s figures indicate a slight month on month decrease in average price, which one might suggest does highlight the volatility of monthly price movements, as the year on year figure still shows a positive reading very much in line with annual market forecast issued at the beginning of 2018.

“As we enter the final key selling season of the year, which is particularly important for those who want to move into their next home before Christmas, it’s quite normal for those vendors whose properties have perhaps stuck on the market over the summer to review their asking price.

“This is a very much standard practice, and if indeed this trend begins to emerge again this year over the next few weeks, would be seen by many in the industry as part of a normally functioning market.”

The reality for many is that regardless of what a top line analysis of pricing might suggest, movements in values are still very much localised, and there is an ongoing disparity between the better performing regions, such as the North and Midlands, and those where values continue to fall, such as London and the South East.

For those who are considering selling or indeed currently have their home on the market, ensuring that the asking price is realistic and in line with current local trends is crucial to securing a buyer within a reasonable time-frame.

If you’re currently marketing a property but haven’t yet secured a buyer, a good rule of thumb is to look at the number of viewings your agent has achieved for you so far.

On average, it takes twelve to fourteen viewings to secure an offer – but only if a property is being marketed at the right price.

If your home has been on the market for four to six weeks and you’ve only had one or two viewings, regardless of how well or badly it’s presented, or where it is in the country, or indeed even buyer demand in your local area, the chances are that your expectations are a little over-ambitious.

There’s nothing wrong with trying the market of course. But with buyer affordability stretched to the limit in most parts of the country, the savvy seller appreciates that there is only so far that prices can go.

Fuel costs SKYROCKET: May saw worst monthly rise in average price of petrol in 18 years https://briefnews.eu/fuel-costs-skyrocket-may-saw-worst-monthly-rise-in-average-price-of-petrol-in-18-years/ https://briefnews.eu/fuel-costs-skyrocket-may-saw-worst-monthly-rise-in-average-price-of-petrol-in-18-years/#respond Tue, 05 Jun 2018 15:12:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fuel-costs-skyrocket-may-saw-worst-monthly-rise-in-average-price-of-petrol-in-18-years/

Fuel prices in the UK have hit the worst mostly rise in at least 18 years, reveals RAC Fuel Watch data.

Unleaded petrol increased from 123.43p to 129.41p, which saw the cost of filling up a 55-litre car to £71.38 – an increase of just £3.29 in one month.

endured a greater rise in cost of 6.12p in one month from 126.7p to 132.39p. It will now cost £3.37 more to fill up a 55-litre family car at £72.81.

This was the second worst rise in diesel since the 6.43p increase in May 2008 of between 120.83p to 129.26p.

RAC Fuel Watch data reveals that the average prices of both petrol and diesel have increased since 22 April, adding 8p a litre in the process.

In May the big four supermarkets raised petrol by 5.49p a litre and diesel by 5.88p while on the motorway, service stations added 6.37p to unleaded, taking it to 144.75p a litre, and 6.69p to diesel making it an eye-watering 147.80p a litre – 15p a litre above average UK prices for both fuels.

The forecourt increases have been driven by a jump in the price of oil, coupled with a weakening of the pound against the dollar.

Oil broke through the $ 80 a barrel mark twice in May – something which has not been seen for three and a half years (since 12 November 2014).

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “May was a hellish month for motorists.

“Sadly, they have been besieged by pump price rises for three months with nearly 9p a litre being added to petrol since the beginning of March.

“The rising oil price together with a weaker pound is a punitive combination for anyone that drives regularly.

“For many people there is little alternative to the car for the majority of journeys they have to make so it is therefore very difficult to avoid feeling the pinch of rising pump prices.

“In the last week of May the oil price cooled a little to $ 76 a barrel which is slightly better news for motorists as the RAC’s two-week forecast is currently showing that average prices may even reduce by a penny or so.

“While this isn’t much, and could easily change in response to oil trading this week, it is at least a sign that the constant rise in forecourt prices may have stopped for the time being.

“Looking at the bigger picture, there is talk that OPEC – the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries – may agree at its meeting on 22 June in Vienna to change its tack of restricting oil supply.

“The group, together with Russia, have been limiting production with a view to removing the long-term oil glut. This strategy has been successful and, as intended, caused the barrel price to rise.

“If a decision is taken to increase supply it may provide some much-needed relief for motorists at the pumps in the UK.”

YouTube gets 1.8 billion logged-in viewers monthly https://briefnews.eu/youtube-gets-1-8-billion-logged-in-viewers-monthly/ https://briefnews.eu/youtube-gets-1-8-billion-logged-in-viewers-monthly/#respond Fri, 04 May 2018 02:31:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/youtube-gets-1-8-billion-logged-in-viewers-monthly/

On stage today at Radio City Music Hall, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki made a surprising revelation: the service gets 1.8 billion logged-in viewers every month. And that doesn’t include people who aren’t logged in — which means the actual number of people watching YouTube is definitely much higher. Last June, the service had 1.5 billion logged-in watchers. On TVs alone, people are now watching 150 million hours of YouTube every day. The latest figures are yet another sign that YouTube’s reach is staggering, something that Wojcicki wanted to make crystal clear for the audience of advertisers and potential partners at its annual BrandCast event.

“It’s incredibly important to me and everyone at YouTube that we grow responsibly,” the CEO said, addressing concerns about the company’s ability to properly monitor offensive content. “There is not a playbook for how open platforms operate at our scale… The way I think about it, it’s critical we’re on the right side of history.”

Wojcicki said YouTube has built “infrastructure and tools” to properly manage its platform over the past year. Additionally, it’s also made guidelines and policies more restrictive, committed more people to monitoring content, and it’s relying on the “latest machine learning” technology to help. While that’s all well and good, she also didn’t reveal any new strategies for better managing YouTube’s platform.

Naturally, YouTube also took the opportunity to reveal its next batch of originals. Will Smith’s Grand Canyon bungee jump was the biggest announcement. And in addition to its highschool basketball series with Lebron James, Best Shot, there’s also If I Could Tell You Just One Thing, which features Priyanka Chopra traveling the world and talking with inspirational people. Jack Whitehall will also work out with professional soccer players in Training Days. As for existing shows, YouTube is renewing three: Kevin Hart’s What the Fit, The Super Slow Show and the Untitled Demi Lovato Project.

  • U.S. News released its 2018 best places to live in America ranking.
  • The list was based on factors like cost of living, salary, and job opportunities.
  • We narrowed down the list to find the best places to live where home prices and rent are lower than the national median.

The best places to live are the cities where people are happy, job opportunities are abundant, pay is good, and housing is affordable.

So says U.S. News & World Report, which recently released its annual ranking of the best places to live in America. To rank the cities, U.S. News considered the job market, value, quality of life, desirability, and net migration of the 125 most populous cities (you can read the full methodology here).

Austin, Texas, came out on top for the second consecutive year, while Colorado Springs, Colorado, jumped from No. 11 to take the No. 2 spot, edging out the state’s capital, Denver, which rounded out the top three. But when it comes to housing prices, Colorado Springs is the winner.

Real-estate site Zillow reports the median price of homes currently on the market in the US is $ 261,500, while the median monthly rent is $ 1,600. We filtered U.S. News top-50 best places to live ranking to highlight the cities where home and rental prices fall below the median.

Below, check out 19 cities where housing is cheaper than half the country. We’ve also included the “value” score —a comparison of annual household income and cost of living — for each city, out of a possible 10. The cities are ranked in order of appearance on the best places to live ranking.

19. Fort Meyers, Florida

FloridaStock/Shutterstock

Population: 680,970

Median home price: $ 210,133

Median monthly rent: $ 984

Value index: 5.2

The charming streets of Fort Myers attract people of all ages, even if the southwestern Florida city is better known as a retirement destination. More than a third of the rapidly growing population is under 34 years old. Residents take advantage of Fort Myers’ vibrant downtown, and the city’s convenient location on Florida’s Gulf Coast lends itself to water activities like boating and fishing. People in Fort Myers tend to pay a little extra for real estate and transportation, but they save thanks to Florida’s lack of state income taxes.

18. Albany, New York

Ron Cogswell/Flickr

Population: 879,291

Median home price: $ 196,075

Median monthly rent: $ 923

Value index: 7.2

Despite the snowy winters, living in Albany comes with several advantages. Albany offers a cost of living lower than the national average and the cost of housing sits well below the rest of the US as a whole. In terms of jobs, the city’s tech and healthcare industries are on the rise.

Albany’s downtown is lined with art galleries, wine shops, and churches for visitors to peruse. In keeping with the city’s cold climate, hockey is the sport of choice for residents.

17. Charleston, South Carolina

Shutterstock

Population: 728,271

Median home price: $ 232,983

Median monthly rent: $ 1,009

Value index: 6.2

Charleston’s charming, historic, and sophisticated ambiance is exemplary of southern culture. “Not only is the area overflowing with entertainment and good food, but this low country locale is also gorgeous,” said a local expert.

Tourism is booming in Charleston, creating plenty of jobs, especially in the summer months. Year-round, jobs in tech, sales, marketing, and advertising keep the city’s economy strong.

16. Columbus, Ohio

16. Columbus, Ohiof11photo/Shutterstock

Population: 1,995,004

Median home price: $171,075

Median monthly rent: $855

Value index: 7.4

Ohio’s capital is a bustling city with a youthful flavor and a passion for sports, music, and entertainment. For many residents, life revolves around the Ohio State University football team — “the region lives and breathes football,” as one local expert put it. But it’s the business-friendly economy and affordability that contributes to its entry on this list. Between home prices, monthly rents, and the overall cost of living, Columbus is cheaper than most metros of its size.

15. Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Population: 533,110

Median home price: $179,408

Median monthly rent: $932

Value index: 7.0

In Lancaster, residents can breeze through numerous environments in the course of a day, from rolling farmland to busy city streets to quiet suburbs. Though dairy farming rules the economy here, major companies, including Kellogg’s and Mars, also call the area home.

Lancaster might be famous for its Amish and Mennonite population, but the town is also bustling with a mix of college students and non-religious families.

14. Greenville, South Carolina

Population: 862,064

Median home price: $159,692

Median monthly rent: $762

Value index: 7.2

Once a sleepy small town, Greenville has witnessed a cultural revival in recent years, complete with an influx of new restaurants and businesses. Though the summers can get hot, the city’s typically mild weather make it possible to explore downtown on foot anytime of the year.

An influx of manufacturing jobs have also boosted Greenville’s economy, with brand-name companies, such as GE and Michelin, setting up shop in town.

13. Omaha, Nebraska

13. Omaha, NebraskaShutterstock

Population: 904,834

Median home price: $165,667

GM will stop reporting monthly U.S. vehicle sales https://briefnews.eu/gm-will-stop-reporting-monthly-u-s-vehicle-sales/ https://briefnews.eu/gm-will-stop-reporting-monthly-u-s-vehicle-sales/#respond Tue, 03 Apr 2018 13:10:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gm-will-stop-reporting-monthly-u-s-vehicle-sales/

DETROIT — General Motors said on Tuesday it will stop reporting monthly U.S. vehicle sales, saying the 30-day snapshot does not accurately reflect the market, and will instead issue quarterly sales.

GM will also no longer report monthly sales in China, its largest market, and Brazil. GM will provide monthly data to the U.S. Federal Reserve, industry associations and government agencies across the globe, but that data is not made public.

Analysts and investors rely on monthly U.S. vehicle sales not just to track the performance of individual automakers, but as a barometer of the health of the world’s second-largest auto market and as an indicator of consumer confidence in the U.S. economy overall.

GM and its Detroit rivals Ford and Fiat Chrysler have relied heavily on sales of high-margin pickup truck and SUV sales to boost profits. GM’s total U.S. sales, its second-largest market, are down 3.2 percent for the first two months of 2018, reflecting a 6.8 percent drop in retail sales to individual customers, the company reported last month.

GM executives have expressed frustration that comparisons of monthly U.S. sales results among rival automakers are distorted by short-term discount programs, and by differences in strategy for selling vehicles in bulk to rental car fleets.

“Thirty days is not enough time to separate real sales trends from short-term fluctuations in a very dynamic, highly competitive market,” Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president for sales operations said in a statement.

GM’s actions could prompt other automakers to also switch to quarterly U.S. sales reports. Major automakers will report March U.S. new vehicle sales on Tuesday.

Until the early 1990s, most U.S. automakers released sales results every 10 days. The former Chrysler Corp. stopped reporting sales on a 10-day basis in 1990, and rivals followed suit over the next three years.

GM executives are betting that investors will quickly adapt to receiving U.S. sales data every three months, as investors in other retail sectors already have. Retailers such as Walmart report sales on a quarterly basis.
