Cat Chambers, Reef Break‘s pro surfer and grifter-turned-fixer, is on the run while yet tackling her toughest case yet — to clear her own name — as ABC’s summertime escapade comes to a close on a special night, this Friday at 9/8c.

Set in Nimitz Bay, a community on the fictional U.S. territory of Reef Island, Reef Break stars Poppy Montgomery as the aforementioned Cat, who heading into the finale was tricked into helping spring onetime cohort Doug O’Casey out of the clink. Now, Cat is on the lam, believed to have returned to her criminal ways.

TVLine presented Montgomery with some of our burning questions (Is she doing any of her own surfing? Why not let Grant Bowler use his real-life accent? Where did this show come from??), and invited her to tease the finale’s many cliffhangers — which, if France cooperates, could be resolved in a possible Season 2.

TVLINE | What is the Reader’s Digest version of the origin of this show? Because when ABC announced it for their schedule, it seemed to come out of nowhere.
Well, I sort of had this idea for a while about a surfing badass criminal chick on a tropical island. We pitched it and sold it to France, and then ABC Network heard about it and picked it up and suddenly it was 13 episodes, and off we went.  It was pretty wild.

TVLINE | It always took place in a fictional U.S. territory where cars apparently have steering wheels on either side?
Exactly. We made up this island that was somewhere in the South Pacific, but a US territory. We wanted to make it fictional so that we didn’t have to deal with any real baggage or politics of an island that existed. We wanted to create a world where we could almost do anything. It’s a bit like Fantasy Island.

TVLINE | Talk about filming it in Gold Coast, Queensland. What did that mean for you, as an Australian? It must have been a dream.
I mean, it literally was. I love surfing. I love tropical islands. I love riding jet skis and boats too fast. It was perfect. And I got to play a thief, which is far more in sync with my personality than playing a cop. I’m much more of a criminal than I am a cop-type, I think.

Reef BreakTVLINE | That’s the sense I get watching the show, that this must be among your all-time favorite roles. Like you said, you’re edgy, you’re sexy, you’re flirty, you’re funny, you’re smart….
It’s exactly what I wanted to do. We wanted it to be a wink, and a kind of “TV beach read” for the summer. It’s fun and a bit fantastic. It’s not meant to be heavy or win Emmys. It’s mean to be a sort of homage to all of the shows that I loved that I used to watch in Australia 10 years after you got them in America. [Laughs] But you never got to see girls. I was a young surfer in Australia and I would watch these guys drive fast cars and surf and everything, and I was like, “Why aren’t there any women doing that?” I really can’t think of another female surfer on television ever.

TVLINE | Like, maybe one of Charlie’s Angels surfed when they went undercover or something?
Yeah, or you had Gidget on that giant board. It was never a fierce competitive surfer, and the women in female surfing are badass and I think they need to be represented.

TVLINE | Along those lines, to what extent have we seen you actually surf on the show? I’ve been doing some freeze-framing and can’t quite tell.
Oh, none of the big waves are me. None of the standup. That’s my amazing stunt double, Angie. I got a black eye when I was surfing here in Malibu right before we started filming and they were like, “Nope, you’re not going to surf on any wave. It’s too much of a risk.” The other thing is, truly, I’m not that good. Angie’s amazing, she is truly fierce. She can do flips and all of that in the air. I’m deeply mediocre when it comes to surfing.

TVLINE | And as far as Cat the skateboarder a few weeks back, I called shenanigans.
I did pop it and catch it! I did the flip at the end. But I couldn’t do [those tricks] on a skateboard. I’d kill myself!

Reef BreakTVLINE | I find the casting of Ray Stevenson interesting and refreshing, because here’s this mountain of a man with salt-and-pepper hair pulled back into a ponytail. And you don’t see guys like that on TV. I feel like this is a guy who has lived a life.
Yeah. We wanted him to have that sort of Russell Crowe, brutish feel to him, and Ray was the perfect guy for it.  He’s like a father figure, in a lot of ways, to Cat, who has daddy issues, clearly. She married the father figure in her life and we wanted that to be real. Then you’ve got Des[mond Chiam as Wyatt], who’s literally the opposite. I mean, he looks about 22. He’s beautiful. Then we’ve got Rob Collins, who’s playing Doug O’Casey…. In the finale, there’s a lot of stuff with Cat and Doug. That’s a love triangle situation that kind of reveals itself in the last two episodes.

TVLINE | Wouldn’t that would make it a square at this point, a rectangle?
And then it veers off again. It might be a hexagon, because Jake is also sleeping with Ana Dumont, the governor. There’s a lot of cross-pollinating going on!

Reef BreakTVLINE | Petra is totally your long-lost daughter, right? A kid Cat put up for adoption or something?
That’s what we should do! That is not a bad idea. You’re brilliant, actually, because we’ve been talking about that. That’s so funny.

TVLINE | I thought it was a bit mean to have Grant Bowler, a Kiwi, on the show, there in Australia, surrounded by what has to be dozens of locals, and make him speak with an American accent.
We never wanted it to look like we were shooting in Australia, unlike Harrow, which is set in Australia. We wanted to show an American territory. But Grant slips his accent in and out there. He has kind of a combo accent.

Reef BreakTVLINE | What else can you tease about the finale on Friday night?
Like I said, there are quite a lot of surprises between Cat and her supposed nemesis, Doug O’Casey. Someone goes missing, and someone gets kidnapped…. There’s a lot going on. There are a lot of cliffhangers and it’s a bit of a wild ride.

TVLINE | Are any lives in jeopardy as the season comes to a close?
Oh, yeah. Like five. There are a lot of lives in jeopardy, I will just say that. Like a lot. I’m not sure how we’re going to deal with it all in Season 2.

TVLINE | What’s in it for ABC to renew Reef Break? If the numbers haven’t been huge, what else makes it attractive to them to renew this?
You know, I think we’ve got to take a look at the programming of it; there were so many preemptions and blackouts that it’s hard to get a real read on what the numbers were. Also, you get a lot of bang for your buck on this show, meaning it looks beautiful and we are doing it very “efficiently” when it comes to the price. But I also think it’s one of those shows that, given the right exposure, who wouldn’t enjoy it? It’s a fun ride. I think it’s just got to find it’s legs a little. And it’s an international co-production, so once it airs in France, we’ll get a real sense of what it looks like. If it’s a monster hit in France…

TVLINE | Oh, so you’ll be dubbed.
It’s the same Without a Trace an Unforgettable dubber. I’m telling you, she sounds exactly like me and it looks like her words match my mouth even though she’s speaking French and I’m speaking English. I have yet to meet her but I’m kind of in awe of her.

Not all political or social revolutions start with the firing of shots, with a formal declaration, or even taking to the streets. Sometimes they start … with a strongly worded letter. On May 21, 1954 — four days after the U.S. Supreme Court announced its landmark ruling in Brown v. Board of Education declaring segregated schools unconstitutional — Jo Ann Gibson Robinson, an English professor at Alabama State College wrote such a letter to the mayor of Montgomery, Alabama.

On behalf of a civil rights group called the Women’s Political Council (WPC), Robinson politely but firmly demanded improved conditions for Black riders on the city’s buses, threatening a boycott if things did not improve. Pulitzer prize-winning historian David Garrow, author of Bearing the Cross, calls it “the most remarkable sheet of paper I had ever seen in some eight years of research on the civil rights movement.” A full year and a half after Robinson’s letter, a 42-year-old seamstress named Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus. In summing up the significance of that act of defiance, political activist and Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver said it was a moment in which “somewhere in the universe, a gear in the machinery shifted.”

When Parks was arrested, Robinson and the WPC sprang into action.

Parks’ courageous act may have shifted the gears of change in Montgomery — where Season 3 of OZY’s hit history podcast The Thread, about the history of nonviolence, begins — but it also represented the culmination of a much longer fight. A host of Black women like Jo Ann Gibson Robinson had been agitating in Montgomery long before Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr. and others took up their struggle and catapulted it into the history books. Montgomery may have launched the American civil rights movement, but these unheralded women launched Montgomery.

Why was it a group of Black women who kick-started things in Montgomery? In part it was because many had jobs as domestic servants and depended upon the buses more than the men in the community. Hence, they were the ones who had been subjected to the harshest treatment aboard the buses. “The all White bus drivers [in Montgomery] had a well-earned reputation for being almost all nasty racists,” says Garrow, and so for Black women, “the city bus system was a sort of necessary evil that was essential to daily life.”

It was a group of educated, middle-class women tied to the all-Black college Alabama State, like Robinson, that first started pushing back against this evil. Robinson, who died in 1992, joined the English department at Alabama State in 1949. Headed to the airport to catch a flight to see her family during her first Christmas vacation in Alabama, the 33-year-old boarded a bus with just two other passengers and took a seat close to the front. Suddenly, the driver was in her face, screaming, “Get up from there!” Shaken, she got off the bus.

Robinson soon learned she was hardly alone in enduring such behavior. “Almost daily some black man, woman, or child had had an unpleasant experience on the bus and told other members of the family about it at the supper table or around the open fireplace or stove,” Robinson writes in her memoir, The Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Women Who Started It. “These stories were repeated to neighbors, who retold them in club meetings or to the ministers of large church congregations.”

Robinson soon joined the WPC, a Black women’s civic group originally founded because the local League of Women Voters chapter had refused to integrate. And while school textbooks now have reduced the boycott to a single incident, as if God placed Rosa Parks alone in that bus seat and in the path of history, there were no shortage of women in the WPC and elsewhere in Montgomery who had stood up to injustice on the buses. One was Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old who became the first Black Montgomery resident to be arrested for challenging segregation on the city buses when she was pulled kicking and screaming from a bus nine months before Parks. Leaders in the civil rights community decided, however, that Colvin was too young (and later too pregnant) to be the face of any Montgomery boycott. Another was an 18-year-old domestic servant named Mary Louise Smith, who went to jail just six weeks before Parks for refusing to give up her seat to a White woman. Smith also was too young, and her father reportedly too fond of alcohol, to play the part.

When Parks was arrested on Dec. 1, 1955, Robinson and the WPC sprang into action. Community leaders had not yet formed the Montgomery Improvement Association and elected a young pastor, Martin Luther King Jr., as its president, and so the WPC’s early actions, including circulating flyers calling for a boycott on the night of Parks’ arrest, were critical to building momentum for the historic protest. Finally, after a community of more than 50,000 people had boycotted the city’s buses for over a year, Montgomery’s leaders realized the situation was untenable and agreed to the protesters’ demands. As Robinson had pointed out in her original letter to the city’s mayor: “Mayor … three-fourths of the riders of those public conveyances are Negroes. If Negroes did not patronize them, they could not possibly operate.”

Robinson was right: They couldn’t. But thanks to brave women like her, the universal machinery conveying social justice in Montgomery could.

Rosa Parks’ arrest over six decades ago sparked the Montgomery bus boycott https://briefnews.eu/rosa-parks-arrest-over-six-decades-ago-sparked-the-montgomery-bus-boycott/ https://briefnews.eu/rosa-parks-arrest-over-six-decades-ago-sparked-the-montgomery-bus-boycott/#respond Fri, 01 Dec 2017 22:01:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rosa-parks-arrest-over-six-decades-ago-sparked-the-montgomery-bus-boycott/ It has been 62 years since Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama. The act sparked a boycott of public transit and made Parks a symbol of the civil rights movement.

“I didn’t get on the bus with the intention of being arrested,” Rosa Parks often said about her protest. “I got on the bus with the intention of going home.”

Parks was not the first protester, however. A 15-year old civil rights activist, Claudette Colvin, was dragged off a bus, arrested and jailed for not giving up her seat to a white woman. Colvin was pregnant at the time, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People didn’t think she would get the support of conservatives to spark a movement. Pressure had been building in Montgomery for some time to deal with public transportation practices that treated blacks as a second-class citizens.

Rosa Parks’ action helped spark the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Parks was a seamstress by trade but was active with the NAACP and Montgomery Improvement Association, working to improve civil rights in her community. Her December 1, 1955 action to refuse to give up her seat in the black section of the bus to a white man was calculated but not planned for that time. Blacks were told to give up their seats to white, if the white section was full.

Parks knew the bus driver that day, James Blake, and that he had a reputation for treating black passengers without dignity. More than a decade earlier, Blake stopped Parks from entering the front of the bus, telling her to use the back entrance, then sped away before she got on.

Parks’ arrest was supposed to start a one-day boycott but it was such a success it transformed into a broader boycott until buses were desegregated, or black people were treated better. The boycott lasted more than a year and helped galvanize the Civil Rights Movement.

After the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. made a speech at Holt Street Baptist Church asking people to join in the fight against segregation, nearly 20,000 passengers boycotted Montgomery’s buses regularly for the 381 days it lasted, and by the end of the boycott, after some bus lines shut down routes to black neighborhoods, as they could no longer sustain the costs, more than 40,000 regular riders of the buses were no longer on them.

The boycott wasn’t without incidents. As it wore on, intimidation was used with sweeping official action designed to deter boycott leaders when Montgomery grand jury indicted 89 boycott leaders in February 1956, including King, Parks, Rev. Ralph Abernathy and most of the other participating black ministers. The charges were based on a 1921 state statute that barred boycotts without “just cause.”

In January 1956, the parsonage where King lived with his family, was bombed. His wife, Coretta Scott King, and their 2-year-old daughter narrowly escaped injury. In August, the home of white Lutheran minister Robert Graetz was bombed. Graetz’s church was all black.

After the boycott ended, King’s home was shot at, and as the boycott was closing, snipers shot into buses in black communities, at one point hitting a young black woman, Rosa Jordan, in the legs. Her injuries were not life threatening. On January 10, 1957, a few weeks after the end of the boycott and segregated seating on the buses, four black churches and two homes were bombed, including Abernathy’s church and parsonage.

The boycott didn’t lead directly to the end of segregation. That took a federal lawsuit filed by five black women, who had been treated unfairly because of their race on city buses, and arrested for refusing to give up their bus seats. They were Aurelia Browder, a housewife, Susie McDonald, who was in her seventies, Jeanette Reese, Claudette Colvin, and Mary Louise Smith, an 18-year old.

During a hearing on Browder vs Gayle held in Montgomery on May 11, 1956, plaintiffs outlined their harsh treatment on city buses for a panel of three judges. The attorneys for the plaintiffs argued that the 1954 Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education applied not only to public education but to public transportation as well.

On June 5, the special panel ruled in favor of the black plaintiffs. The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in Browder vs Gayle case on November 13, 1956.

Stranger Things season 2 cast: Who is Dacre Montgomery? Who plays Max’s big brother Billy? https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-season-2-cast-who-is-dacre-montgomery-who-plays-maxs-big-brother-billy/ https://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-season-2-cast-who-is-dacre-montgomery-who-plays-maxs-big-brother-billy/#respond Thu, 26 Oct 2017 13:08:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stranger-things-season-2-cast-who-is-dacre-montgomery-who-plays-maxs-big-brother-billy/

Who is Billy?

2 picks up a year after the events of the first season, when a new pair of kids move to Hawkins – step-siblings Max (played by ) and Billy.

Max is a “sort of skater punk girl” who joins the boys’ class and causes tension between Mike, Dustin and Lucas.

She rolls into Hawkins with her older step-brother Billy – whose “hyper-confident and edgy” qualities verge on bullying.

“He is a mean guy,” director Shawn Levy told TV Guide.

“He has prejudices that are ugly. He treats his younger sister in a mean, controlling, bully-ish, domineering fashion. So he is just bad.”

Billy has been described as the “human villain” for season two.

“Stephen King always has really great human villains,” creators the Duffer Brothers told Entertainment Weekly.

“The evil in the real world is often as bad or worse than the supernatural evil, so we wanted to introduce a character like that.

“And Billy, really, he disrupts the world the teenagers and stuff.”

Who is Dacre Montgomery?

Dacre Montgomery, 22, joins the cast of Stranger Things fresh from his turn as Jason the Red Ranger in this year’s Power Rangers.

The Australian actor won the part of Billy after stripping off for producers.

“I danced in a g-string to Hungry Like The Wolf [by Duran Duran],” he told Refinery29.

“I made a little short film, with an opening score and title credits and I read both of the scenes I was given… I danced.

“That audition could have gone one of two ways. I could have never worked in this industry again, but someone, somewhere, saw something.”

Dacre was cast almost immediately, and three weeks later moved to the US to begin filming.

To get into character, Dacre was given hair extensions to create Billy’s magnificent mullet.

“It was fantastic,” he said. It’s the ‘moo-lay,’ as the Kiwis are calling it…I really liked it.”

Although Billy seems like a heartless bully, Dacre said that he is “misunderstood”, and teased that he is “humanised a bit in episode 8”.

“It becomes more evident why he is the way he is,” he said.

Dacre was born in Perth, Australia and began acting on screen and in theatre aged nine.

In 2010 he starred in his first short film, Bertrand the Terrible, and in 2016 played Jeremy in the Australian-American horror comedy Better Watch Out.

David Giuntoli, Poppy Montgomery to Lead CBS' Mission Control Drama Pilot https://briefnews.eu/david-giuntoli-poppy-montgomery-to-lead-cbs-mission-control-drama-pilot/ https://briefnews.eu/david-giuntoli-poppy-montgomery-to-lead-cbs-mission-control-drama-pilot/#respond Mon, 13 Mar 2017 23:59:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/david-giuntoli-poppy-montgomery-to-lead-cbs-mission-control-drama-pilot/

Grimm vet David Giuntoli and Unforgettable star Poppy Montgomery are headed to space.

The duo will headline CBS’ drama pilot Mission Control, from sci-fi novelist Andy Weir (The Martian), our sister site Deadline reports.

The potential series centers around the next generation of NASA astronauts and scientists as they juggle both their personal and professional lives during a critical mission with no margin for error.

Giuntoli — who is currently wrapping up a six-year run as homicide detective Nick Burkhardt on NBC’s Grimm — will play Stevenson, an astronaut and the mission’s commander. Montgomery’s role as Julie, the mission’s flight director, reunites the actress with the Eye network, where she starred in Unforgettable, Without a Trace and last year’s comedy pilot Furst Born.

Giuntoli and Montgomery join the previously cast Nestor Serrano (The Last Ship) and Levi Fiehler (The Fosters), who play the Johnson Space Center’s director and an intense “propeller head” who thinks in computer code, respectively.

Charles Eglee (Hemlock Grove, Dexter) and Simon Kinberg (Designated Survivor, The Martian) will serve as executive producers on the project.
