The Yeti, which is rumoured to roam the Himalayas, has gained international fame and inspired countless expeditions to prove – or disprove – its existence. The scientific community has largely ruled out the possibility that the animal could exist and testimony to the contrary is assumed to be fabricated. But Sir David said there was one piece of evidence which is hard to dismiss after he was asked by Jonathan Ross on his ‘Friday Night’ show whether he believed in any mythical creatures.

The 94-year-old responded: “I don’t think there is a Loch Ness Monster, because, if there was one, there would have to be two or three – a family.

“If it was an ichthyosaur or something, an air-breathing creature, it would be coming up all the time as well.

“But I am absolutely baffled by the abominable snowman, which was also called the Yeti or Sasquatch because very, very convincing footprints have been found.

“Especially footprints found 18,000 or 19,000 feet up, nobody goes up that high for a joke.”

He added in 2009: “So I think there’s an unanswered problem.”

In the second episode of his BBC series “Seven Worlds, One Planet,” Sir David took viewers to Asia to investigate the Yeti further and established a rational explanation for the sightings.

The overgrown forests of China’s Himalayas still remain largely untouched by humans and locals tell stories of the creature that lies within.

Sir David said: “The Himalayas are now the tallest mountains on the planet.

“They stand over five miles high, India is still moving north and these mountains are rising.

“Meet the blue-faced golden snub-nosed snow monkey.

“They are among the heftiest of monkeys.

“Big animals keep warm more easily than small ones and they survive in conditions colder than any other monkey on Earth.

“They all have snub-noses, perhaps prominent ones would just get frosty too easily.”

Sir David detailed how these monkeys live a tough life, battling to survive.

He continued in 2019: “The whole group huddles together at every opportunity, and who wouldn’t?

“Even adults, if they get separated from the team can freeze to death.

“Now in the depths of winter, food is hard to find.

“The head of the family leads them to the edge of their territory in search of something to eat.

“The only food here is rapturously unnourishing – bark and moss – and there’s hardly enough to sustain one monkey, let alone a family.

“Survival depends on the group keeping together and in these mountains any food is precious.”

Have YOUR say and VOTE HERE https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-poll-who-is-the-monster-who-is-octopus-have-your-say-and-vote-here/ https://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-poll-who-is-the-monster-who-is-octopus-have-your-say-and-vote-here/#respond Sat, 01 Feb 2020 10:05:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-masked-singer-poll-who-is-the-monster-who-is-octopus-have-your-say-and-vote-here/

The Masked Singer has had viewers hooked as they guess exactly who the celebrities are behind the full-body costumes in the show. There have been plenty of outlandish guesses so far in the series but viewers are still mixed on who they could actually be.

Tonight’s (Saturday, February 1) episode of The Masked Singer will see the remaining seven contestants on the hit singing competition perform.

This will all come ahead of a dramatic double unmasking on the popular ITV series, which will see two more celebrities sent home.

So far in the series, there have been some pretty dramatic reveals, including how US singer Kelis was the Daisy, EastEnders actor Patsy Palmer was the Butterfly and The Darkness lead vocalist Justin Hawkins was the Chameleon.

Ahead of the latest performances, have your say in who exactly you think are behind the masks on the hit show in Express.co.uk’s exclusive poll below.

Who is Queen Bee?

Queen Bee has been stumping viewers with her performances ever since she first sung Alive by Sia.

The judges have put out a number of guesses, including everyone from Kylie Minogue to Emilia Clarke, as well as audiences at home placing their guesses.

Currently, according to Ladbrokes, the most likely candidate is Little Mix’s Jade Thirwell at 5/4 with Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts following closely behind at 2/1.

Other guesses are also all from girl bands with Nadine Coyle at 5/2, Leigh-Anne Pinnock at 3/1 and Sarah Harding at 6/1.

Who is Unicorn?

Fans of the show have fallen in love with Unicorn’s energetic performances, singing songs like Babooshka by Kate Bush, Juice by Lizzo and Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top.

Ladbrokes place John Barrowman at evens, Jake Shears at 2/1, Mika at 4/1, Kevin McHale at 9/2 and Adam Lambert at 16/1.

Who is Hedgehog?

Hedgehog has teased viewers with clues they are a stage actor who may have appeared in musicals like Phantom of the Opera and Hairspray so far in the competition.

This has led Ladbrokes to put Welsh singer Rhydian Roberts as the most likely candidate at 4/5.

Other potential stars are Alfie Boe (4/1), Michael Ball (5/1), Jason Manford (8/1) and Wes Nelson (10/1).

Who is Monster?

Monster left fans convinced they were American performer Cee Lo Green when they first came out with their performance of Happy by Pharrell Williams.

Ladbrokes place him at 1/3 with Andre 3000 at 2/1, LL Cool J at 5/1, Jamie Foxx at 100/1 and Elton John at 500/1.

Who is Duck?

Viewers were sure they had guessed who Duck was before they came out in their second performance with an operatic twang.

This has led viewers to speculate whether Duck could be Skunk Anansie singer Skin with her odds at 4/6.

Some fans are convinced this is true after the character previously revealed they could speak two foreign languages, which is something Skin tweeted about in the past.

Other potential celebrities behind the mask are Denise Lewis (4/1), Mel C (9/2), Claire Danes (8/1) and Kelly Holmes (10/1).

The Walking Dead Recap: Scary Tales — Plus, Alpha, From Mother to Monster https://briefnews.eu/the-walking-dead-recap-scary-tales-plus-alpha-from-mother-to-monster/ https://briefnews.eu/the-walking-dead-recap-scary-tales-plus-alpha-from-mother-to-monster/#respond Mon, 18 Feb 2019 13:57:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-walking-dead-recap-scary-tales-plus-alpha-from-mother-to-monster/ “Some people ain’t meant to be parents,” Daryl opined in Sunday’s episode of The Walking Dead. And once we’d heard Lydia’s stories about her mother — and these were just the chilling tip of the iceberg — there could be no doubt that the she-beast who called herself Alpha was one of those people. How bad was she? Read on — and, while you’re at it, call your mama!

the walking dead season 9 episode 10 recap alpha backstoryONCE UPON A TIME… | As the flashback-filled “Omega” began, Lydia recalled for Henry (as Daryl eavesdropped) Day 23 of the apocalypse, which found the then-6ish-year-old holed up with her folks and some other survivors in a moldy basement. Dad Frank, she described as being vaguely menacing — a lot like Carol’s abusive first husband, Ed (may he rest in pieces!). Mom she recalled being sweet at the time, funny (she always called “checkmate” while playing checkers) and reassuring enough to sing her daughter “Lydia the Tattooed Lady” when she was scared. And the way that the kids mentioned in passing that their mothers weren’t folks that one messed with suggested that we would get a helluva confrontation between Alpha and Carol down the line.

Later, Henry attempted to flirt with Lydia by offering her one of the eggs that he’d been served for breakfast. Pass, she said. “Hunger’s a gift.” (Jenny Craig, your new slogan has arrived!) When she asked why he was being nice to her, he remembered that when he’d been found along with his father and brother (Benjamin shout-out!), they’d been so messed up that they’d needed a lot of people being nice to them to make things OK again. “You think I’m messed up?” asked the walker-skin-wearer without a trace of irony. Uh, yeah, Henry implied as he questioned how hunger was a gift. Cribbing from dialogue of his that she’d never heard, she replied, “If I have to explain it, you wouldn’t understand.” Anyway, it was never going to be OK again; her dad had said so.

the walking dead season 9 episode 10 recap alpha backstoryLOOSE LIPS | In another flashback, we saw how desperate Lydia’s father became. So desperate that he would’ve risked her life to flee from the basement with her, had Mom not stopped him. “Bitch,” he grumbled before starting to cut off the beard that his wife had always liked. “The world’s over. I’m doing what I want now.” Back in present-day, Lydia soon had Henry spilling so much intel about the Kingdom that he was sure to get a Dumbest Character Ever nomination. Thankfully, Daryl quickly intervened, sprung his ward from lockup and reminded him, “You got family at the Kingdom, nimrod!” OK, he didn’t actually say “nimrod,” but he should’ve. Being an idiot, Henry was mostly upset to learn that his babysitter (and others) had been listening to his conversations with Lydia.

Meanwhile, out searching for Alden and Luke, Tara, Magna, Yumiko, Kelly, Connie and Kal happened on some old-school walkers feasting on the missing persons’ horses — which had been cut open and skinned by the new-school variety. Should the Hilltoppers split up and cover more ground? No, said Tara. Well aware that Lydia had told enough lies to sprout a foot-long nose, the Hilltop’s de-facto leader suggested that instead, they head back and come up with an actual plan. Which sounded to me like a pretty decent plan. Upon learning what the group had discovered, Daryl again took a shot at questioning Lydia. If her mom had Alden and Luke, what would she do — kill ’em? She’d “do what she had to,” the girl answered. Honestly, kid, a simple yes would’ve sufficed.

the walking dead season 9 episode 10 recap alpha backstoryBIRTH OF A MONSTER | Flashing back to that fateful basement once again, Lydia recalled how one of the other survivors down there became panicked — panicked in the noisy sort of way that threatened to attract walkers and get them all killed. So her mother had violently pinned him, hissing, “You are weak and pathetic, and there is no room for you here, so shut your mouth… Do you hear me?” Only he didn’t really hear her since that was about the moment that she snapped his neck. Now, it appeared, Frank was the nurturing parent — scared of his wife and singing “Lydia the Tattooed Lady” to their daughter. Back in the present, Daryl told Lydia that it didn’t have to be that way. Only it appeared that it did: When he neared her cell with a ladle of water, she attacked him, in the process revealing terrible scars on her arm.

Elsewhere at the Hilltop, though Yumiko was eager to go back out and look for Luke — oh, and Alden; him, too — Magna didn’t want to risk pissing off Tara. Magna had nearly blown it for them all back in Alexandria, she quite rightly noted, and she wasn’t eager to take a chance with the good thing that they now had going at the Hilltop. Well, if it were up to Luke, Kelly pointed out, he’d continue the search. He’d be hellbent on getting and keeping them together. And it wouldn’t be hard to sneak out — she’d seen some kids do it, so obviously, anyone could. In the end, Magna was outvoted — they’d go after Luke once the sun set.

the walking dead season 9 episode 10 recap alpha backstoryPAPA DON’T SCREECH | That evening, Daryl visited Lydia again — this time with a switch from a birch tree. Frank, he said, sounded like the kinda dad who’d make up any excuse just to wail on his kid. Except for the singing part. “Those dads, they like it when you’re scared.” And that, he added, was the only part of her story that he’d believed thus far. So who gave her those scars? “My mom,” Lydia said. And where was she? “Be glad you don’t know.” Clearly, Daryl hadn’t watched enough Law & Order before the apocalypse! Frustrated, he couldn’t fathom why she was protecting her mother when she was safer right where she was. “This place isn’t real,” Lydia said as she’d clearly been taught to. And if her mom was hard, so what? “When you stay soft,” Lydia said, again like a brainwashing victim, “people die.”

During a subsequent flashback — and if you’re confused reading this, don’t worry; I was a little bit, too, when watching, but it’ll make sense soon — Mom had her head shaved, and Frank had his beard back. Yet it was only a little while after Mom had killed the guy who’d panicked (and then she’d had longer hair, and Dad had been clean-shaven). In the night, Lydia got up to look at the stiff, and when it reanimated, her father was killed trying to save her. He “was soft,” she told Daryl, “and now he’s dead.” What else could he have done, Daryl asked, but protect her? “If you can’t bend, you break,” Lydia said, obviously reading from the Book of Alpha. “He broke.” She then went so far as to suggest that Daryl didn’t belong someplace like the Hilltop. “You’re hard,” she said. “They’re soft.”

the walking dead season 9 episode 10 recap alpha backstorySAFE PLAY | As soon as Daryl left Lydia, Henry was all over him with questions, ranging from “What’s gonna happen to her?” to “Did someone used to beat you up?” Given stony silence as the answer to the latter question, Henry told his guardian that he’d once heard Ezekiel ask Carol why she kept her hair so short. Ed used to grab it when she ran away from him, she’d said. So one day, she’d cut it all off. “It took her this long to feel safe again,” Henry added. So maybe Daryl could show Lydia that she has nothing to be scared of. “You can do that,” the teen pleaded. “Only you.” Uh-uh, Daryl replied. “Not just me.” Clearly, a plot was being hatched. A kindhearted one but a plot nonetheless.

That night, Yumiko, Magna, Connie and Kelly seemed to scarcely have begun their search for Luke — oh, and Alden — before they found Whisperer tracks and an antsy Yumiko admitted that she couldn’t stop thinking about Coalport. They’d had to leave their posts, Magna argued. That, or die. Well, Yumiko still didn’t want to die, so after a walker attacked out of nowhere, she suggested that they go back. At that, Kelly broke down. Luke’s family, she cried. And when she’d gotten separated from them in Coalport, he’d been the one who found her. “I can’t leave him out here,” she sobbed. “I can’t.” So, as an unnoticed Whisperer watched from nearby, Connie agreed to stay with her sister while their friends returned to the Hilltop.

the walking dead season 9 episode 10 recap alpha backstoryBUGGING OUT | Back on the cell block, Henry told Lydia that Daryl didn’t know he was there. Henry had said he’d talk to her the next day but couldn’t wait. Because… ? “I like you,” he told Lydia. “I think you’re a good person.” He even let her out of her cell to show her around the Hilltop in secret — a move that would’ve clinched his win as Dumbest Character Ever, had we not soon learned that Daryl was watching them as a part of his plan to win over the girl. And no one could say that Henry didn’t go the extra mile to earn Lydia’s trust; he even ate a worm, which apparently was one of the Whisperers’ preferred snacks. (Do I have to mention at this point that the “date” included no kissing?)

As Lydia soaked in her lavish surroundings, she at first appeared to be contemplating bludgeoning Henry with a hammer. She was at a crossroads, though. “Places like this aren’t supposed to exist,” she said as if unsure whether she could believe her eyes. And when a baby’s cry told her that this utopia was real, that was it — the dam broke. She sped through a series of torturous flashbacks that revealed that her mother, not her father, had always been the hard one, then asked Henry to lock her back up. Would he… stay with her, though? Of course he would. He laid down on the other side of her cell bars and held her hand through the night.

TALK IS DEEP | The following morning, when Daryl came down to Lydia’s cell, he actually gave her the ladle to drink from. His plan having been a success, she was ready to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but. For starters, her mom wouldn’t be coming for her. When someone gets lost from their group, they just move on “like they never existed.” So she’d been trying to learn about the Hilltop and Kingdom to give Mom a reason to take her back. “You’re her daughter,” said an incredulous Henry. “Does that not matter?” Yeah, uh, no. Also, if Mom had Luke and Alden, there’d be no reason she’d keep them alive. Does she have a camp? Yes, Lydia said. About a mile east of a guard bridge. But they wouldn’t stay long. They never did.

After Lydia answered Daryl’s questions, Henry asked if the stuff about her family had been true. She’d thought so. Except… “It was a lie, but the lie wasn’t mine. My mom told it to me over and over for years. But deep down, I knew… I knew what she was. I knew what she did.” Which was what, exactly? When Mom’s first victim had reanimated, she’d begun breaking boards off the windows to leave with her family. When Frank had balked at the notion of taking Lydia out there, she’d taken advantage of the chaos to step on Lydia’s stuffed bunny and murder him. (OK, the murder was the point, but the stuffed-bunny-stepping really just showed what a monster she was, even then.)

the walking dead season 9 episode 10 recap alpha backstoryMAMMA MIA | When Daryl and Henry left Lydia, the former promised to talk to Tara about letting her stay (or at least that was the implication). “I’m glad,” Henry told his protector, that “you and my mom are friends.” (We all are, kid.) Nearby, Yumiko was apologizing to Tara for sneaking out just as the Hilltop’s guards were bringing back Kelly and Connie and… holy crap, what was that s—? A power-walking group of Whisperers was headed right for them, sending Connie running into a cornfield to hide. Among the masked villains was one Whisperer without a walker skin covering her face: Lydia’s mom! “I am Alpha,” she announced as they reached the gate. “And we only want one thing from you: my daughter.” Dunno ’bout you, but I got chills, they’re multiplyin’. What did you think of Alpha and Lydia’s backstory? Hit the comments.

Monster Hunter World Witcher UPDATE 6.00: Patch notes revealed for free DLC https://briefnews.eu/monster-hunter-world-witcher-update-6-00-patch-notes-revealed-for-free-dlc/ https://briefnews.eu/monster-hunter-world-witcher-update-6-00-patch-notes-revealed-for-free-dlc/#respond Fri, 08 Feb 2019 12:16:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/monster-hunter-world-witcher-update-6-00-patch-notes-revealed-for-free-dlc/

The Witcher 3 and Monster Hunter World have joined forces, as update 6.00 hits PS4 and Xbox One.

Out now, the free Monster Hunter World DLC update weighs in at 1.72GB on PS4 and 1.28GB on Xbox One.

The headline new feature is that you can play as Geralt of Rivia in a brand new mission.

“Play as Geralt of Rivia and take on a new special assignment!” reads a Capcom post. “Go on a quest containing RPG elements from The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and solve mysteries as an expert monster slayer for hire!”

Titled Trouble in the Ancient Forest, the mission is said to have different endings depending on your progression through the side objectives. Fortunately, you can try the quest as many times as you like, so you can fully experiment with the various objectives.

The mission pits players against the Leshen, which is able to control flora and fauna to deadly effect.

Needless to say, you’ll unlock a host of rewards for completing the mission, including the Witcher’s Silver Sword, Nekker armour for your Palico and much more.

You can check out the Monster Hunter World update 6.00 patch notes below…

Regarding Guild Cards

• Certain poses and expressions cannot be selected when using a full armor set or layered armor related to the Horizon Zero Dawn* or The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt collaborations.

• If you have these poses or expressions already selected, please note that they will revert back to the default “Crossed Arms” pose and “Expression 1” expression.

Player-related Bug Fixes

• A bug has been fixed where a mantle’s effect duration would count down if the player had it equipped while in an idle state, or equipped with one of the following weapons drawn: Switch Axe (Sword Mode), Charge Blade (Axe Mode), Light Bowgun, or Heavy Bowgun.

PS4 Users:

• A bug has been fixed that allowed players to use an item unintentionally. When a weapon is drawn, players can either press Square two times to sheathe their weapon and consume an item, or hold down Square once to do both actions consecutively. However, if the Dash Settings are changed to allow running by using both the L3 and R1 buttons, players could use an item unintentionally if they held down the L3 button while tapping the Square button. This has been fixed so that tapping the Square button will not consume an item if the player is holding down a dash button.

• Note: This issue does not occur if Dash Settings are set to allow running using only the R1 button. If your Dash Settings are set to L3, this bug occurred when holding down the R1 button and tapping the Square button, but has also been fixed.

Xbox One Users:

• A bug has been fixed that allowed players to use an item unintentionally. When a weapon is drawn, players can either press the X button two times to sheathe their weapon and consume an item, or hold down the X button once to do both actions consecutively. However, if the Dash Settings are changed to allow running by using both the LS and RB buttons, players could use an item unintentionally if they held down the LS button while tapping the X button. This has been fixed so that tapping the X button will not consume an item if the player is holding down a dash button.

• Note: This issue does not occur if Dash Settings are set to allow running using only the RB button. If your Dash Settings are set to LS, this bug occurred when holding down the RB button and tapping the X button, but has also been fixed.

• A bug has been fixed that caused the Speed Crawler effect to stop working properly after update Ver. 5.21 (PS4) / 5.2.1.0 (Xbox One). It is now working as intended.

Masked Singer Week 3: Biggest Clues About the Lion, Monster and More https://briefnews.eu/masked-singer-week-3-biggest-clues-about-the-lion-monster-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/masked-singer-week-3-biggest-clues-about-the-lion-monster-and-more/#respond Sat, 19 Jan 2019 21:18:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/masked-singer-week-3-biggest-clues-about-the-lion-monster-and-more/

The reveal of the third Masked Singer on Wednesdsay changed the game for those of us watching from home. With the introductory episodes out of the way, we’re now finally able to put our theories to the test — and so far, we’re doing good.

That’s right, TVLine is officially 1 for 1, having correctly guessed that former NFL superstar Terry Bradshaw was hiding (and sweating profusely) under that Deer costume. And after the fresh batch of clues we received this week about the Peacock, the Monster, the Unicorn and the Lion, we’re pretty confident in our picks for the other four remaining members of this group. (And if we’re right, some of the judges’ guesses have been way off, especially when it comes to the Lion.)

As always, though, we’ll have to wait two more weeks before any of these singers are revealed. Next Wednesday’s episode (Fox, 9/8c) pivots back to the second group and will unmask either the Rabbit, the Bee, the Alien or the Poodle. (Don’t worry, we’re got theories about them, too.)

Browse our updated gallery of Masked Singer clues and guesses — you can click here for direct access — then drop a comment with your own picks below. Which celebrities are lurking in those costumes?

From the Buran to the Caspian Sea Monster: 5 epic Soviet projects https://briefnews.eu/from-the-buran-to-the-caspian-sea-monster-5-epic-soviet-projects/ https://briefnews.eu/from-the-buran-to-the-caspian-sea-monster-5-epic-soviet-projects/#respond Wed, 26 Dec 2018 21:06:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/from-the-buran-to-the-caspian-sea-monster-5-epic-soviet-projects/

The Tu-144 supersonic passenger jet entered service 43 years ago – to mark the date, RT has compiled a list of equally epic Soviet tech marvels. Some started legacies, others were forgotten, and some are still kicking today.

Tu-144, the ‘Soviet Concorde’

One of only two commercial supersonic transport planes – the other being the Concorde – Tupolev Tu-144 first took flight on December 31, 1968, two months before its Anglo-French counterpart. With their sleek shapes and tilting pointy noses – necessary to switch between streamlined flight mode and visibility during take-off and landing – both became symbols in late 20th century aviation.

On December 26, 1975, the Tu-144 went into service, transporting mail between Moscow and the then Kazakh capital Alma-Ata (now Almaty). Two years later it carried its first passengers along the same route. The 3,200km flight took about two hours – twice as fast as a regular one.

Tu-144 creators had big plans for the craft. Maps were drawn up with supersonic air lanes connecting Moscow to all over the globe, including Europe, Japan and Cuba. But it was not meant to be: the only times the plane flew outside the Soviet Union was at three airshows in Le Bourget in the 1970s – and one of those times ended with a crash that killed 14 people.

Two more died in another crash landing in 1978. Plagued with safety issues and unprofitable, the Tu-144 ended its passenger-carrying career after just eight months and 55 flights. It occasionally carried cargo until 1999, when it was retired for good – four years before the Concorde.

Buran, the Soviet space shuttle

One of the ways the Tu-144s legacy endured was its use to train crews for the Soviet spacecraft Buran (‘blizzard’ in Russian). Conceived in 1973, the Buran was meant to rival the American space shuttle program, carrying crews and cargo to the orbit and back.

Development required a massive effort, involving some 2.5 million people from across the Soviet Union. The first flight was scheduled for 1984, but had to be pushed back, until in 1988 the Buran finally roared into the sky. It was carried on the ‘Energia’ rocket – the most powerful the Soviet Union ever built.

Buran’s first and only flight was unique in that it was unmanned, controlled from the ground lift-off to landing. It flew around the Earth twice in four hours, and landed safely – forever. As the Soviet Union fell apart, economy forced the program to be suspended indefinitely in 1993.

An-225 Mriya, the heaviest plane ever built

Transporting the Buran on its back was the Antonov An-225 Mriya (“dream” in Ukrainian). Designed in the Ukrainian Soviet Republic with the initial purpose of carrying the Soviet spacecraft, it made its maiden flight in 1988 and entered full service in 1989.

With an impressive length of 84 meters (275 feet) and a wingspan of 88.4 meters (290 feet), it is one of the largest airplanes in existence.

Only one of these flying behemoths was ever built, and it took effort by companies from several cities across Russia and Ukraine (all part of the Soviet Union at the time). Capable of lifting 390 tonnes of cargo, it made it possible to move by air things previously though too heavy and bulky.

The one and only Mriya remains operational to this day, operated by Ukraine’s Antonov Airlines and contracted to carry massive industrial and military equipment.

The Caspian Sea Monster

Before the Mriya, the heaviest lift capacity record was held by the KM (short for “Корабль-макет”, or “prototype ship”) – a unique Soviet ground effect vehicle built in the 1960s.

Granted, it didn’t carry the cargo too high in the air – ground effect vehicles are designed to fly low, utilizing the increased lift force generated between the wings and the surface of the ground or water.

Dubbed the Caspian Sea Monster (which is also abbreviated to KM in Russian), the prototype could carry up to 304 tonnes of cargo and go at a speed of over 400 km/h (250 mph). It was developed and built in secrecy, and underwent 15 years of test flights on the Caspian Sea.

In 1980, the same year its creator died from injuries during the testing of another ground effect vehicle, the Caspian Sea Monster perished as well. Pilot error left it damaged and drifting in the water for several days, before it finally sank, never to be lifted back up.

The Lenin, the first nuclear icebreaker

In 1957, the Soviet Union added a revolutionary spark to the practice of clearing frozen-over sea lanes, by launching the first-ever nuclear-powered surface ship. Combining two things Russia has in abundance – ice and uranium, – was the Lenin, an icebreaker that began a unique shipbuilding trend.

Powered by two reactors and four turbines, the Lenin cleared ice along the Soviet Union’s northern shores for over 30 years and sailed farther north than any surface vessel before it. It was retired in 1989, its hull worn thin by all the ice it had plowed through, and became a floating museum in the city of Murmansk.

The Soviet Union was, and Russia remains, the only country to build and use nuclear-powered icebreakers. A total of ten have been constructed since the Lenin, five remain operational to this day, and new ones are being built.

WWE monster suffers horrific injury https://briefnews.eu/wwe-monster-suffers-horrific-injury/ https://briefnews.eu/wwe-monster-suffers-horrific-injury/#respond Tue, 20 Nov 2018 18:59:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wwe-monster-suffers-horrific-injury/ WWE have confirmed Braun Strowman suffered a “shattered elbow” after a brutal attack on Monday Night Raw.

The Monster Among Men was left bloodied and beaten following the triple assault dished out by Baron Corbin, Bobby Lashley and Drew McIntyre.

Fans were immediately worried for the giant’s wellbeing as he was heard telling medics: “I can’t feel my fingers right now.”

Strowman, who helped Raw to a clean sweep at Survivor Series, is due to face acting general manager Corbin in the main event at WWE’s next pay-per-view, TLC, on December 17.

He will receive a shot at Brock Lesnar’s Universal Title at the Royal Rumble if he emerges triumphant.

However, his participation at TLC is now under threat after the company released a statement on his condition. And it was not good news for Strowman and his fans.

“As reported by Michael Cole during the Monday Night Raw broadcast, Braun Strowman suffered a shattered elbow at the hands of Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley and Acting Raw General Manager Baron Corbin,” the statement read.

“During tonight’s Six-Man Elimination Tag Team Match, Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley and Acting Raw General Manager Baron Corbin brutally assaulted Braun Strowman and smashed The Monster Among Men’s right arm with the steel steps.

“WWE.com can confirm that Strowman sustained serious injuries in the attack, and is undergoing evaluation by WWE medical personnel to determine the extent of the damage.”

The blow is most likely part of WWE’s storyline but only last week Becky Lynch suffered a broken nose on Raw.

The SmackDown Live Women’s champion led an invasion on the red brand’s female roster but was caught with a fist by Nia Jax during the melee.

Medics ruled her out of her champion-vs-champion showdown with Ronda Rousey at Sunday’s Survivor Series, with Charlotte Flair stepping in to take her place.

It’s official: the world loves Venom. The superhero film is already a big hit, and this weekend, it’s opening in China – and it’s opening big. So big, in fact, that it’s on track to earn as much, or even more, worldwide than all of Sony’s other Spider-Man– related movies. People just can’t get enough of Venom and his big, slimy tongue! If you’re a fan of Venom, this is good news, because this means more movies like Venom are on the way. If you’re not a fan of Venom, than this is bad news, because this means more movies like Venom are on the way.

I’m at a loss, folks. I never expected Venom to flop – the name recognition alone guaranteed it would turn a profit. But I never expected it to be this much of a hit. The Tom Hardy film about a giant slime monster and his human buddy has already made $ 600 million globally, and it’s nowhere near done. Venom opens in China this weekend, and per Deadline, it’s on its way to making another $ 100 million-plus there when all is said and done.

According to the report, if this happens, it would put Venom “in the Top 15 China openers ever, besting Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Ant-Man And The Wasp.” Not only that, but the $ 100 million-plus would put the total around $ 700 million – and that’s just this weekend. It’s clearly going to keep making more, and if it does, it’s going to make as much, or more than, Sony’s Spider-Man movies. For comparison, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took in $ 709 million worldwide, total. The Amazing Spider-Man webbed itself a $ 758 million worldwide total, the first Spider-Man hauled in $ 822 million, Spider-Man 2 tapped-out at $ 784 million, and Spider-Man 3, another movie that featured Venom, topped off at $ 891 million. It’s reasonable to believe Venom might come close, or even surpass, these totals. And that’s nuts.

So what does this mean? Box office success always ensures imitation, and global box office success is even better. Studios are going to pay close attention to this, and start green-lighting their own movies like Venom. There are two ways to react to this news. If you enjoyed Venom, you’ll probably be thrilled. But if you thought Venom was a garbage fire, you’re going to be disheartened. And if you’re like me, and a little weary of constant superhero movies, you’re going to be slightly disappointed, because this means there’s no sign of the trend ever slowing down. On the plus-side, we don’t have to put up with any “superhero fatigue” articles for a while.

Invasion of the mud monster: California can’t stop onslaught of seeping soil https://briefnews.eu/invasion-of-the-mud-monster-california-cant-stop-onslaught-of-seeping-soil/ https://briefnews.eu/invasion-of-the-mud-monster-california-cant-stop-onslaught-of-seeping-soil/#respond Mon, 05 Nov 2018 12:07:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/invasion-of-the-mud-monster-california-cant-stop-onslaught-of-seeping-soil/

California is currently fighting a losing battle to contain a rather turgid and slow moving foe. The state is attempting to stop a creeping mud geyser threatening local infrastructure near the town of Niland, Imperial County.

The movement of the mass of gloopy soil could be likened to a creature from a horror B-movie, thanks to it seeping and sliding towards human civilisation.

Mud pots are a natural occurrence that usually take place when a hot acidic spring dissolves rock and soil. Often the pools of muck and water can be seen bubbling due to the geothermal heat.

The Niland geyser, named after the nearby town, has prompted local authorities to declare an emergency, after it slid towards Union Pacific Railroad tracks and buried nearby utilities. Transport officials have more recently built temporary diversions in a bid to bypass the moving mud lake.

Located near an intersection of the CA-111 highway and Gillespie Road, the geyser – or mud pot – has been a moving feature of the local landscape since the 1950s, according to the US Weather Channel. However, in recent times the natural phenomenon has gathered pace and moved “an additional 60 feet,” report the Imperial County Public Health Department.

Speaking to the LA Times, Alfredo Estrada, an Imperial County’s fire chief, described the situation as a “slow-moving disaster.” Wells have been dug in the area and a shoo-fly train track laid to give safe passage – but still the mud geyser, which sits on the San Andreas fault line, represents a growing risk.

This month the natural mud spring was reported to have overcome a steel wall built by Union Pacific as a defense barrier.

“The geyser continues to encroach on critical infrastructure such as the Kinder Morgan pipeline and the State Highway,” the local government said in an update. “Officials from Caltrans are working on their contingency plans in the event that the geyser affects State Highway 111.”

‘Absolute monster’ claims another victim https://briefnews.eu/absolute-monster-claims-another-victim/ https://briefnews.eu/absolute-monster-claims-another-victim/#respond Sun, 30 Sep 2018 08:35:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/absolute-monster-claims-another-victim/ MIXED martial arts fans, remember the name Aaron Pico because he’s going to be a destroyer of worlds for years to come.

The 22-year-old is being touted as the sport’s next big thing and despite an upset loss on his debut, the young star has rebounded in emphatic fashion.

Over the past year he has fought four times and won all four in emphatic knockout fashion. On Sunday he made it four from four, once again proving he has wrecking balls instead of hands.

Still raw in terms of time spent in the Octagon, Pico hasn’t been overwhelmed despite taking on far more advanced fighters.

His latest opponent was former Bellator title contender Leandro Higo who managed to land a few meaningful blows, but never looked like walking away victorious.

Instead it was Pico who took control with his remarkable speed and punching power which eventually sent Higo crumpling to the canvas.

A little over three minutes into the contest and the referee was forced to wave off the fight and hand Pico his fourth MMA win.

After the fight the supremely talented star called out Patricio Putbull, shouting “your time is coming” to the current Bellator featherweight champion.

He didn’t hold back when speaking after the fight either as he proclaimed he’ll be a force to be reckoned with into the future/

“I’ll tell you one thing, three or four years from now, there will be no one who touches me in this cage,” Pico (4-1) said.

“I’ve been saying before the fight he’s never fought a guy on my level a guy who pushes the pace, for an hour I can go however long it can go.”

Fans watching on were in awe of the decimation job laid down by Pico, but many were also highly critical of the referee who should have stopped the fight much earlier.
