The article that ran in the January 1953 issue of Motion Picture and Television Magazine exposing Hollywood’s toxic environment for women was called “Wolves I Have Known.” Its author was not a former performer or an industry outcast. She was a rising star, one with only a few films under her belt. Still, Marilyn Monroe was not afraid to put what was fast becoming a household name on the story’s byline.

In the 1953 article, the 27-year-old Monroe describes the different types of men she had met in Hollywood. “There are many types of wolves,” she wrote. “Some are sinister, others are just good-time Charlies trying to get something for nothing and others make a game of it.” Calling out the culture of sexual harassment in Hollywood did not start in 2017 or with allegations against Harvey Weinstein. In fact, one of the industry’s biggest legends was also one of its pioneering silence breakers.

Monroe began to call out the wolves.

As Michelle Morgan chronicles in Marilyn Monroe: Private and Confidential, the young Monroe struggled for years as an aspiring model and actress during the late 1940s. She often had trouble paying for food and rent, and modeling came with certain occupational hazards. In an interview she gave two years before her death from a drug overdose in 1962, Monroe explained how sex factored into the profession: “When I started modeling, it was like part of the job … and if you didn’t go along, there were 25 girls who would.”

Being a starlet in Hollywood was no easier. “Even in those early days of modeling when she was trying to break into Hollywood,” says Sarah Churchwell, author of The Many Lives of Marilyn Monroe, “men would accost her and tell her that they could help her break into the movies.” Monroe’s agent Harry Lipton once recounted the story of a high-powered executive at a Hollywood party who offered Monroe lavish gifts in exchange for sexual favors. She refused. “What can I say to men like that, Harry?” she asked Lipton on the car ride home. “You’ll learn,” Lipton replied.

Monroe did learn how to tolerate the wolves. “There were plenty of them,” she notes in her unfinished autobiography, My Story. “I didn’t take their money … but I kept riding in their limousines and sitting beside them in swanky places. There was always a chance a job, and not another wolf, might spot you.”

In 1946, at the age of 20, Monroe landed that first big job, a contract with Twentieth Century Fox. The following year she signed a new contract with Columbia Pictures. But that didn’t stop the unsolicited offers. “There were many stories about producers who tried to have a sexual relationship with her,” says Churchwell, “to get her on the casting couch.” After she had her screen test for Columbia Pictures, Monroe claimed that the studio’s married head, Harry Cohn, invited her to take a trip with him on his yacht. She responded that she would only come if Cohn’s wife came too. Monroe was dropped from her contract.

But, if Monroe wanted to pursue her dream, she could not avoid the casting couch entirely. “You know that when a producer calls an actress into his office to discuss a script, that isn’t all he has in mind,” Monroe observes in My Story. “I’ve slept with producers. I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t.”

Once she became a star, Monroe started to look out for other women in the industry. In an interview last year on the British talk show This Morning, Joan Collins recalled the time when Monroe warned her, as a young British actress coming to America, about the perils of working stateside: “She said, ‘Watch out for the wolves in Hollywood, honey … if they don’t get what they want, they’ll drop your contract.’”

Monroe also began to call out the wolves, most notably in My Story and the 1953 article, which included multiple examples of harassment by and propositions from unnamed men. The directors who cornered her at parties. The producers who invited her to their offices on a Saturday afternoon. “Marilyn was really one of the first big stars to speak out about what we would now call sexual harassment,” says Churchwell. “She was talking about a culture in which women were unsafe [and] her whole point was to say this happens over and over and over.”

In the years after her death, Monroe’s biographers, largely men, tended to ignore the star’s silence-breaking role, preferring to focus instead on the more salacious details of her personal life and the rumors that she slept her way to the top. Nor did Monroe, while she was alive, think of herself as a social reformer or a trailblazer for women’s rights. As the singer Ella Fitzgerald, a good friend of Monroe’s, once reflected about the screen legend: “She was an unusual woman — a little ahead of her times, and she didn’t know it.”

The President of the United States and the former-model from Slovenia looked appropriately solemn at the sombre event.

Both FLOTUS and POTUS’s hair flew in the wind as the USA’s First Couple stepped from their private jet.

Melania struggled to hold her black skirt down as she stepped of the plane.

She wore a belted suit jacket that was nipped in at the waist over the long skirt.

The stylish First Lady added towering heels to the look and dark sunglasses.

The couple were later joined by Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen at the funeral.

Billy Graham was an American evangelist Southern Baptist minister.

He had met every US president to date before he died age 99.

Barack Obama tweeted: “Billy Graham was a humble servant who prayed for so many – and who, with wisdom and grace, gave hope and guidance to generations of Americans.”

The minister was worth an estimated £18 million at the time of his death.

Melania Trump wore another black ensemble to lay a wreath on Graham’s casket, which lay in Washington. 

The First Lady wore a princess coat with a fur collar and kept her hands covered in black leather gloves.

She completed the look with black court shoes. Her legs, however, were not covered, and her tanned calves could be seen.

As usual, Melania wore her hair loosely over her shoulders, and opted for her signature smoky eye makeup.

In the summer of 1964, the FBI spent two weeks investigating a tip from author Frank Capell that he was publishing a 70-page book outlining Bobby Kennedy’s alleged affair with Marilyn Monroe, accusing him and the Kennedy clan of being responsible for her death.

This unexpected bit of history comes from the release of over 2,800 previously classified documents about President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963. President Donald Trump allowed the release of the so-called JFK files on Thursday.

It has long been rumored that Bobby Kennedy — who was married to Ethel Kennedy — had an affair with Monroe after JFK “passed her off to his brother,” as People puts it.

“Did the trouble begin when Marilyn realized that her VIP had no intention of getting a divorce and marrying her?” Capell wrote in the “The Strange Death of Marilyn Monroe,” labeling Bobby Kennedy “VIP.” He added, “Since Marilyn could destroy him either by talking or with written evidence, did he decide to take drastic action?”

Capell went on to accuse Kennedy of using “the Communist Conspiracy which is an expert in the scientific elimination of its enemies” to murder Monroe.

In official memos, the FBI calls the rumored affair and allegation that Kennedy was with Monroe when she died “utterly false.” Kennedy was the attorney general at the time, and thus oversaw the Bureau, raising questions about why FBI agents might have been looking into potentially salacious material about their boss.

Monroe died on August 5, 1962 at her home in Los Angeles. The coroner concluded it was “probably suicide” from a barbiturate overdose.

“The above allegation concerning the Attorney General has been previously circulated and has been branded as false as the Attorney General was actually in San Francisco with his wife at the time Marilyn Monroe committed suicide,” an FBI agent from New York wrote.

The New York office was instructed to “follow this matter very closely,” and send two copies of Capell’s book to FBI headquarters once they were published so Kennedy could be “kept advised.”

On July 15, 1964, FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover sent Kennedy a copy of the book, writing that Capell “claims that you had a close relationship with Miss Monroe.”

In March 1976, Sen. Frank Church requested “all FBI materials pertaining to communications between FBI Director Hoover and Attorney General Robert Kennedy with respect to the publication of a book about Marilyn Monroe by Frank Capell,” suggesting he may have known such communications existed. In April, the FBI complied.

That’s the last document in the entry named “Marilyn Monroe” in the JFK files.

Church conducted a far-reaching investigation into US intelligence agencies after Watergate. The Monroe files he requested fell under the JFK Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992, and were released to the public on October 26, 2017.

But whilst Pratt has often had more media attention over recent years as his movie career has gone stratospheric, it’s worth remembering also that Faris has some hilarious work under her belt.

The actress, who has also appeared on TV in Mom and Friends, nailed a hilarious Marilyn Monroe homage in 2008’s The House Bunny.

In it, she played a former Playboy bunny who signs up to be a mentor and “house mother” to an unpopular university sorority.

The House Bunny may have left critics lukewarm but The House Bunny has attracted a strong cult following over the years, and remains one of Faris’ most popular films.

She’s also led the Scary Movie franchise, appearing in the first four films between 2000 and 2006.

Last night Chris Pratt revealed on his Facebook page: “Anna and I are sad to announce we are legally separating. 

“We tried hard for a long time, and we’re really disappointed. Our son has two parents who love him very much and for his sake we want to keep this situation as private as possible moving forward. 

“We still have love for each other, will always cherish our time together and continue to have the deepest respect for one another.”

The post has amassed almost a quarter of a million ‘reactions’ on Facebook in a matter of hours, as well as almost 20,000 shares.

The property where the former model and actress died aged just 36 has gone up for sale for $ 6.9million (£5.4million). 

The white house in Brentwood, Los Angeles, has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a gated entrance, large kitchen and an expansive back garden with swimming pool. 

It was where Marilyn, real name Norma Jeane Baker, was discovered dead in August 1962. 

She was found by her psychiatrist Ralph Greenson lying naked on her bed with a telephone in her hand after a barbiturate overdose. 

Speaking about the property just weeks before her death, Marilyn called it: “A place for any friends of mine who are in some kind of trouble, you know, and maybe they’ll want to live here where they won’t be bothered till things are OK for them.”

Monroe, who grew up in LA, first found fame as a model before her short-lived film career included iconic hits such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch and Some Like It Hot.

She was also married three times, to James Dougherty, baseball star Joe DiMaggio and author and playwright Arthur Miller.
