Something about the humor and heart in the ongoing travels of Guybrush Threepwood as he strives to become a mighty pirate has resonated with players ever since the point-and-click adventure game The Secret of Monkey Island first released over 30 ago.

Following the 1991 release of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge, there have been sequels and homages, but none made by the original creators of the series. That’s changing with the upcoming release of Return to Monkey Island, which launches on September 19. I had a chance to sit down with series creators Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman at PAX West to ask them about what brought them back and where the newly revived series goes from here. For them, the sequel is a matter of unfinished business — both for Guybrush and themselves.

Why are you returning to Monkey Island after all these years?

Ron Gilbert: This story really is about unfinished business. And I think there’s two levels. There’s the unfinished business Guybrush has with finding “what is the secret of Monkey Island?” And then I think there’s the unfinished business that Dave and I have of doing a new game, and it is about this unfinished business.

Dave Grossman: We sort of left a thread dangling in midair about 30 years ago.

There have been other Monkey Island titles that have danced around, but not strictly continued the story. Can you share where and when this story takes place?

Gilbert: It starts right at the end of Monkey Island 2. And then it gets really bizarre. And that’s all [we will] share. Because I really want people to experience that moment.

This is a series that has been around for over 30 years. How do you approach building an adventure game in 2022?

Gilbert: I think a lot of the same ways we approached it back then. I think there’s a fundamental thing to how you do an adventure game and how you tell the story. And especially the story in adventure games, which are primarily kind of pulled along by puzzles, that I think there’s just a way you do that, that just hasn’t really changed that much. So at its core, not much.

But on the other hand, the audience has changed quite a bit. We’re not dealing with eight-year-old boys who have tons of free time. We’re dealing with an audience that now has the choice of hundreds of games to play, and has hint systems at their fingertips in the form of Google. And we’re dealing with people who will, quite frankly, have lives, and they have to think about games a little bit differently than maybe people a long time ago. So that is very different. We need to look at how that audience approaches that adventure.

With that in mind, what has been done to make it so people without infinite time can progress through the game?

Grossman: One thing, there’s a built-in hint system … We don’t want to just sort of say here’s what you do, which is what you find in a walkthrough. We think that’s less fun than just sort of getting a nudge from somebody who knows what the game is about.

We can sort of step up the pace for the audience, we’ve done a little bit to improve the exploration, just in the way that we implemented the UI for that. The way you get through one of these games is largely solving puzzles with tools that you pick up. So you have an inventory full of stuff, and that hasn’t changed. And if they’re some sort of exotic, special-use item, you want to be able to trigger whatever it is that they do.

Guybrush Threepwood converses with another pirate over a campfire in Return to Monkey Island

Those map to the old, “look at thing, pick up thing and use [thing].” And so we’ve made an interface that only presents those options, and only where they make sense. The “use” is particularly problematic, because it’s super fake, right? So we started writing these little text descriptions of what’s actually going to happen. And we gradually realized that these are actually very flavorful. And they represent Guybush. He has thoughts about the world around him. And we thought, this is another great avenue for us to tell the story and expose character. And so we got really into that for a while. And we think it’s a great, just a great addition, that not only streamlines things, but it also kind of makes the game richer.

Did you know going into this game that you wanted to strictly stick to a point-and-click style adventure?

Gilbert: Yeah, I think so. Point-and-click is more than just an interface. Point-click is almost a way to tell a story. It’s a narrative framework that you lay on things with the puzzle-solving, moving things forward. And I think that’s something that Dave and I are very familiar with, and definitely something that we wanted to do with this game. Because there is some nostalgia in that. If this game had just turned into a first-person shooter or, you know, a video playback game or something, it’s not really what this is about. I think that the point-and-click nature is kind of the core of what we want to do here.

Grossman: One thing that impresses me is how smooth the controller interface is actually for doing point-click stuff. It’s just elegant and well-thought-out. It’s just a different approach to drive Guybrush around.

What are the challenges of being funny in a video game? How do you approach putting comedy into a game?

Grossman: I don’t know why people say comedy is hard, and I don’t know why they say it’s hard in games, because it isn’t. It’s a worldview. I think the only way that I am able to deal with a world, which I feel is absurd, is just by making fun of it. I feel like I have just got to make fun of everything [in the game], the same way that I’m thinking about everything around me. And it just makes it funny.

A shopkeep looks over his collection of keys in Return to Monkey Island.

People worry about timing and how you don’t really control the timing in one of these games. But that’s kind of false as well. Because the timing that’s critical for a joke to land is sort of momentary timing that we would put inside of a tiny, noninteractive thing. It’s like how much space is there between Guybrush’s line and the next person’s line. You really can spend some time adjusting that. So maybe if you don’t have a sense of timing, that does make it hard. There is kind of a musical aspect to it — you’ve got to put that line at exactly the right spot. But we do have total control over that kind of time.

And just as a general approach, we sort of work from the top-down and come up with a concept for the game, and then we come up with some chapters for the game, and then we come up with puzzles that go into the chapters and we sort of get finer and finer and finer. And we just try to be funny at every step of that process. And by the time we’re finished, the game is funny.

So in terms of Guybrush Threepwood, has he evolved much from the last time we’ve seen him and experienced his adventures?

Gilbert: He doesn’t. I mean, he’s very kind, very happy-go-lucky. You know? It’s like, the glass is always full for him. Not even half=full. It’s full. And I think this kind of makes him so endearing and charming. He does look at everything with this kind of wide-eyed enthusiasm.  And we want players to look at the game through Guybrush’s eyes. So I don’t know that he has really changed. He’s not like a cynical bitter old man in this version of the game. I think there’s a little bit of oldness. I mean, he’s a little more experienced. He’s not the ‘I’m Guybrush I want to be a mighty pirate’. He is a mighty pirate now. So there is experience that goes along with that.

A blond pirate reaches his hand up the side of a ship in Return to Monkey Island

Grossman: Yeah, his attitude is sort of “I can find a way to solve this problem,” and he just doesn’t really think about the consequences that might occur. That’s sort of at the heart of what’s going on.

So when you look back then at the original, is that like looking into your past in terms of where you were mentally and what you were thinking about?

Gilbert: Yeah, it’s like, you can kind of look at those early games as a little metaphor for our stages as designers. The first one is Guybrush as a young pirate who wants to succeed as a pirate, and it was certainly like one of the first games we ever did. We were Guybrush in that sense. In the second game, he had some success. And he’s trying to prove himself now. And again, that’s kind of what we were doing with the second game. So it was a little bit of an autobiography that follows through those different games.

And is the same is true here, then?

Grossman: Totally, yeah. It’s unfinished business for us, unfinished business for Guybrush. There’s definitely a little mesh between real life and the game story.

Is there a balance that you look to strike between your image for what you’re creating versus what you think people might be expecting? Or are you really just all-in on your own artistic vision?

Grossman: If we think about what people were actually expecting, we’d be likely to do the opposite because we don’t want to just do what people expect. That’s never interesting. Like, we do think about how things were going to be received by the audience. That makes us cautious about some things, but sometimes we have to just do what is right for the game.

A female pirate is climbing a rope in a dimly lit pit in Return to Monkey Island.

Gilbert: I mean, ultimately, you have to do as you believe in. You know, I think if, fundamentally, you believe in what you’re doing,  you’re not just crapping out a game for a paycheck. If you really believe in what you’re doing, I think that does come through. And a lot of people, in their defense a little bit, they haven’t played the game yet. They’ve just seen screenshots or seen little video clips. But it’s something we very deeply believe in. We believe in this game, we believe in the choices that are made for that game.

In some ways, it’s a part of being a creative person in the modern world where everybody has a megaphone, and everybody can just scream at you over little things. Like some guy on Twitter got very upset over the font we were using. The font. And he had this whole Twitter thread. And it’s like, I mean, I’m glad you’re passionate about the game at that point, but again, is that really the sword you’re dying on?

Everybody’s gonna have an opinion, especially when you do a game Like Monkey Island, that’s had 30 years of this nostalgia built up for it. And quite frankly, it’s a different thing for everybody. There is no choice that Dave and I could have made that would have made everybody happy … I think if you try to make everybody happy, you just end up with a product that is boring, which is probably what you would get from a focus-tested game. They’re boring on some level. So do we just do what we believe in.

I like the thing you said about the relationship between artists and social media today. Nobody was ever on the internet saying, “Hey, Monet, your paintings are blurry and you suck!”

Grossman: Ron Gilbert bigger than Monet!

In terms of his story, you’ve been upfront that this is the conclusion, this is where we’re wrapping things up.

A close up headshot of Dave Grossman, co creator of Monkey Island.
Monkey Island co-creator Dave Grossman.

Grossman: No.

No? I misread that then.

Gilbert: A lot of people misread that. I’m not sure exactly where that comes from.

(Editor’s note: the official website for Return to Monkey Island features the phrase “The exciting conclusion of the Monkey Island series …”)

People can lie on the internet? No!

Gilbert: Exactly! You can’t print it if it’s not true.

Grossman:: I think somebody poorly chose a word, and it got released.

Gilbert: Yeah, I mean, this might be the last one that David and I make. Who knows? But I just can’t imagine a world where there are no more Monkey Island games.

What would make the two of you want to do another one? Is it just if another couple of decades go by, and you just get the itch to?

Gilbert: Talk to us in 30 years.

Grossman:: I mean yeah, if there was a good story to be told and, and the opportunity was there, do it. I think part of what’s interesting is watching how the story has changed over the decades. The people telling it get older. It will be interesting to see what the story is like when we are 68. It will be about going to bed, mostly.

Gilbert: It’s about getting up to pee five times

'Don’t react to this bullsh*t!': Football world unites over Koulibaly monkey chants https://briefnews.eu/dont-react-to-this-bullsht-football-world-unites-over-koulibaly-monkey-chants/ https://briefnews.eu/dont-react-to-this-bullsht-football-world-unites-over-koulibaly-monkey-chants/#respond Fri, 28 Dec 2018 10:37:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dont-react-to-this-bullsht-football-world-unites-over-koulibaly-monkey-chants/

The football world has been united in its condemnation of monkey chants from Inter Milan fans towards Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly, with prominent figures including Mo Salah insisting racism has “no place” in the game.

Koulibaly, who is currently one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe, was targeted by Inter Milan fans with the chants during a Serie A game at San Siro on Wednesday, suffering abuse from the home support throughout the match. The chants intensified when the 27-year-old was sent off with ten minutes to go in the match for sarcastically clapping the referee.

Inter, who won the game 1-0 by virtue of a 91st-minute goal from Lautaro Martinez, were then slapped with a two-game stadium ban which forced them to hold their next couple of home games behind closed doors, with a third game having ‘curva’ section, which houses Inter Milan’s ‘ultra’ fans.

In a surprise twist, Senegal international Koulibaly will also face a two-game suspension for his sending off, which raised eyebrows about the Italian league’s punishment system and overall attitude in dealing with racism towards its players.

A host of prominent football figures spoke out on the incident, including Liverpool’s ‘Egyptian King’ Mo Salah, who tweeted: “There’s no place for racism in football. There’s no place for racism anywhere at all.”

He was joined by Koulibaly teammate Dries Marten, who posted a heartwarming picture fo the two sharing an embrace, with the caption: “You’re one of the most beautiful people I know, please never change. Don’t react to this b*llshit. Let’s stand together!”

A host of other famous names and faces also showed their support, including Juventus’ 5-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, who posted to Instagram: “In the world and in football I always want education and respect. No to racism and any offense and discrimination!!!”

Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund were one of the club sides keen to show their support to the player, and drew attention to their ‘Borussia Unites’ anti-racism campaign. However, some football fans were criticized about their choice of protest, as a supporter was snapped holding an anti-racist banner in blackface.

Koulibaly’s manager Carlo Ancelotti was praised by anti-racism groups for his comments made after the game in which he expressed his desire for the game to be suspended given the chants: “We asked three times for the match to be suspended and there were three announcements, but the match continued,” he told Sky.

“The player was irritable, he wasn’t in the best state of mind. Usually he’s a very calm and professional player but there were these noises throughout the game.

“It looks like an excuse but the player was agitated and irritable. It’s not good, not for us, nor for Italian football.

“The solution exists. You have to stop the match. You just have to know when, after how many announcements. And if we don’t know, then next time we may have to stop play ourselves.”

Dutch speed skater Kjeld Nuis had just held his nerve to claim gold in the men’s Olympic 1,000 metres ahead of Havard Lorentzen.

But things took a bizarre turn at the Gangneung Oval when a fan jumped the barriers to run on to the ice.

Video footage shows him taking off his clothes before running around in a pink tutu with only a monkey protecting his modesty.

The long-haired invade had ‘PEACE + LOVE’ written on to his body before he was whisked away.

It was the one bizarre moment of another intriguing day in Pyeongchang – although it was a bad one for Team GB.

Great Britain’s women can now only win curling bronze at best after a semi-final defeat to Sweden, who will meet hosts South Korea in Sunday’s final.

Eve Muirhead, Anna Sloan, Vicki Adams and Lauren Gray suffered a 10-5 loss to Anna Hasselborg’s Sweden at Gangneung Curling Centre.

A short final shot from skip Eve Muirhead in the seventh end gifted the Swedes a three against the hammer and effectively ended the semi-final contest.

Muirhead had gone into the game full of confidence after a superb win over pre-tournament favourites Canada in their final round-robin match.

But the British rink were always up against it as Sweden capitalised on some ponderous play to establish an early lead.

Muirhead briefly drew her team level after the fifth but her dismal seventh meant that once again she will have to be content with bronze at best. They finished with bronze four years ago in Sochi.

Japan will be Saturday’s opponents in the bronze bout, after South Korea edged to an 8-7 win in a tight contest in the other semi-final.

The hosts held the upper hand throughout, but Japan scored two in the ninth end and a South Korea mistake in the 10th gave them another to force an extra end. But South Korea held their nerve to prevail.

Switzerland took bronze in the men’s event with a 7-5 win over Canada, who finish without a medal for the first time from the men’s and women’s team competitions.

Canada did win the mixed doubles event which is new to the Games.

The men’s final between Sweden and the United States takes place on Saturday.

Fifteen-year-old Alina Zagitova won the Olympic ladies’ figure skating title at the Gangneung Ice Arena on Friday, earning the first gold of the Games for the Olympic Athletes of Russia.

Zagitova held on to beat compatriot Evgenia Medvedeva by just over a single point after a pair of mesmerising free skates which earned identical scores of 156.65. Kaetlyn Osmond of Canada was a distant third.

Zagitova had gone into the free skate narrowly ahead of 18-year-old Medvedeva after a world record score in her short programme routine on Wednesday.

Kelsey Serwa won the women’s ski cross ahead of fellow Canadian Brittany Phelan at Phoenix Snow Park.

Fanny Smith of Switzerland took bronze, while Briton Emily Sarsfield was fourth in her quarter-final heat after coming second in her first round heat.

VW monkey and Hitler comments don't pose a problem, judge rules https://briefnews.eu/vw-monkey-and-hitler-comments-dont-pose-a-problem-judge-rules/ https://briefnews.eu/vw-monkey-and-hitler-comments-dont-pose-a-problem-judge-rules/#respond Wed, 21 Feb 2018 00:28:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/vw-monkey-and-hitler-comments-dont-pose-a-problem-judge-rules/

FAIRFAX, Va. — A Virginia state court judge on Tuesday rejected a request by the U.S. unit of Volkswagen AG to delay several of the company’s trials over excess emissions because of “inflammatory” comments made by a lawyer representing car owners that it fears will prejudice the jury.

Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Bruce White said after a hearing that he would proceed with a Feb. 26 trial involving a North Carolina man who bought a 2014 diesel Jetta.

Volkswagen said publicity from a Netflix documentary that disclosed the company had jointly sponsored 2014 tests that exposed monkeys to toxic diesel fumes could prejudice its chances of receiving a fair trial.

Judge White said he was satisfied a fair panel could be seated for the expected three-week trial. “The jurors don’t know much about these cases,” White said generally of high-profile cases.

The German carmaker is being sued by some consumers after it admitted in September 2015 to cheating on diesel emissions tests, sparking the biggest business crisis in its history.

Nearly all U.S. owners of affected cars agreed to take part in a $ 25 billion settlement in 2016 in the United States that addressed claims from them, environmental regulators, U.S. states and dealers. About 2,000 owners, however, opted out and most are pursuing court claims seeking additional compensation.

Volkswagen of America had asked White to delay that trial for at least six months after a lawyer for more than 300 U.S. VW diesel owners, Michael Melkersen, gave an interview in the Netflix documentary in which he referred to the company testing diesel fumes on monkeys.

In the Netflix interview, Melkersen criticized the tests, adding: “One cannot help to think back throughout history of another series of events involving individuals being gassed by a person who was actually at the opening of the very first Volkswagen factory,” an apparent reference to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and the Holocaust.

In its legal filing, VW’s lawyers argued those comments would prevent a fair trial.

Volkswagen lawyers said that “pretrial publicity has connected (the company) directly with Hitler and the Holocaust,” which they said was not relevant to a trial about claims of consumer fraud.

Melkersen previously said it was “another tactic to postpone (Volkswagen’s) day of reckoning.”

In response to Judge White’s ruling, a VW spokeswoman said the company looks “forward to demonstrating at the upcoming trial that the plaintiff has suffered no damages and that his demands for compensation are extravagant and unfounded.”

Anti-racism protesters stormed multiple H&M stores across South Africa Saturday, in response to an advertisement for the company’s children’s clothing they view as racist.

The protests were staged by members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) who trashed the H&M stores in Menlyn Park Shopping Center, Pretoria, East Rand Mall and Sandton City Shopping Center in Gauteng.

EFF protests were also reported at H&M stores in Gauteng’s Mall of the South and Mall of Africa, and at Clearwater Mall in Johannesburg.

H&M has faced an international backlash this week over an online advert which featured a black child wearing a hoodie reading “coolest monkey in the jungle”. The retail chain apologised to customers via its Twitter account and said the garment was no longer for sale.

The Deputy President of EFF took to Twitter to praise the group’s members for “physically confronting racism”.

Each of the affected shopping centers confirmed the incidents, saying that while no injuries had been reported, security personnel at the malls remained on “high alert” in the wake of the protests.

“All the outlets of H&M in South Africa [were] allegedly targeted by EFF party members simultaneously,” read the statement from East Rand mall.

“The safety and security of our customers, staff and tenants is of utmost importance and the affected area has been secured by the South African Police Services (SAPS),” said Menlyn Park.

Gauteng police said they used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd at East Rand Mall and confirmed that all H&M stores have been closed in response. No arrests have been made.

Is having a black child model a “Coolest Monkey in the Jungle” hoodie racist, or are netizens reading too much into an innocent take on childhood? RT’s guests weigh in on H&M’s advertisement controversy in an on-air debate.

The online outrage caused by the Swedish retailer’s pick of a photo of a black child modelling a hoodie with the words ‘Coolest monkey in the jungle’ emblazoned on the front, has forced the company into an official apology while removing the image from its site.

Many users on Twitter went as far as calling for a boycott over H&M’s alleged racism. However, Luke Gittos, law editor of Spiked magazine, believes the controversy is overblown and reflects a kind of outrage mentality online.

“This is a very sad day. The word monkey’s been used because this boy is a child, and the word monkey is used to describe children of all races because they’re cheeky and mischievous,” he said. “The idea that this was somehow racially malevolent I think is utterly ludicrous, and really I think this is a symptom of what Twitter does to people; it encourages people to see the absolute worst in [other] people’s motivations.”

Not only that, but scandals like this may in fact deepen the racial divide, Gittos added. “Twitter makes racial solidarity impossible by encouraging everyone [to] believe the worst about everyone else.”

“I think it’s really sad when adult conceptions about racism and race get read into childhood interactions. I think that is potentially extremely corrosive. If this kind of thinking gets into our school environment, for example, what are we going to end up saying? That black children can’t get involved with games that might involve jungle animals?”

But Remy Fadare of Models of Diversity, herself a victim of childhood bullying and the racial slur ‘monkey’, said she was very disappointed in H&M as the implications of associating a black person with that word should have been obvious. “If you’re gonna specifically choose a campaign where a black child is chosen as the monkey and the white child is chosen as the jungle survivor, in a climate of racial tension, you know it’s going to have connotations,” she said.

“This is really ill-timed to say the least. This is really badly thought out by a board of white directors. Even if there’s that opinion that it’s just been badly thought-out and it’s the parents who are negatively thinking about this, you cannot deny the connotations that it holds. I was bullied, called a monkey by the whole class and it really had an effect, and if that had an effect on me, it’s going to have an effect on generations to come.”
