Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey.

  • The pound after the Bank of England said it's closely monitoring financial markets.
  • The BoE didn't say it would take emergency action to stem the decline of the pound, which hit a record low earlier Monday.
  • The pound fell by nearly 2% after the statement but didn't return to record lows.

The British pound turned lower Monday after the Bank of England said it's watching financial markets, a statement that didn't include any specific action the central bank would take to halt the pummeling of the country's currency.

"The Bank is monitoring developments in financial markets very closely in light of the significant repricing of financial assets," BoE Governor Andrew Bailey said in a statement Monday.

The pound fell by 1.8% to $ 1.0651 after the statement was released. The bank issued the afternoon statement hours after pound sterling sank to a historic low against the dollar, triggered by fears over the UK government's proposed  £45 billion ($ 48.6 billion) mini-budget. The pound during Asian trading sank by nearly 5% to $ 1.0350, the lowest level since 1971 when the UK switched to a decimal-based currency system.

Cable, the nickname for the pound-dollar exchange, later recovered some ground and briefly bounced back above $ 1.09. Financial markets were looking for the Bank of England to say it would raise interest rates or enact emergency measures to aid the pound.

"The role of monetary policy is to ensure that demand does not get ahead of supply in a way that leads to more inflation over the medium term. As the [Monetary Policy Committee] has made clear, it will make a full assessment at its next scheduled meeting of the impact on demand and inflation from the Government's announcements, and the fall in sterling, and act accordingly," said Bailey.

The central bank's next policy meeting was scheduled for November 3. The MPC has raised the UK's benchmark interest rate seven times since December to control inflation. It raised the rate last week by 50 basis points to 2.25%. British inflation was 9.9% in August, slightly easing from 10.1% in July.

The pound has been hit after the government, under new Prime Minister Liz Truss, last week introduced a "Growth Plan" aimed at a 2.5% trend of economic expansion. The so-called mini-budget includes proposals for the largest tax cuts since 1972. The plan has spooked investors who fear it may increase inflation further and sharply increase government debt.

Financial markets on Monday were pricing in expectations for UK interest rates to rise to soar to 6% next year on the back of sterling's fall.

Ahead of the BoE's statement, Mark Makepeace, founder and former chief executive of FTSE Russell, said on CNBC the pound could fall to parity with the dollar if the bank didn't step in. FTSE Russell is a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group and its global lineup of financial indexes includes the closely watched FTSE 100 gauge of UK blue-chip stocks. The FTSE 100 ended Monday's session up by less than 0.1%.

Nomura earlier Monday said it expects the pound to reach parity with the dollar by the end of November, and for it to fall to 0.975 relative to the dollar by the end of 2022.

Withings undercuts Apple Watch, debuts $ 129 ECG monitoring smartwatch

Enlarge (credit: Withings)

Withings has had a tumultuous couple of years. The company was bought by Nokia only to be re-acquired by its original owner Éric Carreel last May. While it sells smart scales, thermometers, and other health electronics, the French company has an uphill battle ahead of it in the wearable space thanks to an oversaturated market. But it’s aiming high with its newest device: the $ 129 Withings Move ECG targets those who want a more affordable device to measure electrocardiograms at home than the $ 350 Apple Watch.

Like Withings wearables of yesteryear, the Move ECG has an analog face but includes most of the smart technology inside that you’d expect from a modern wearable. The kickers are its three electrodes that measure electrocardiograms, two of which are embedded into the body of the watch while the third sits in the watch’s bezel. To take a reading, users need to touch both sides of the bezel at the same time while wearing the watch and wait about 30 seconds for it to take a measurement.

The process sounds nearly identical to that of the Apple Watch Series 4, which has one circular electrode on its underside and one smaller electrode on its Digital Crown. The Move ECG sends that data to Withings’ Health Mate mobile app so you can see if your heart beat was normal or if any signs of atrial fibrillation were detected. Data accumulated over time can be seen in larger charts and graphs in the app, and that data can be exported so users can easily share it with their doctors. As of today’s announcement, the Move ECG is currently under review for FDA clearance (the Apple Watch Series 4’s ECG app and its irregular rhythm notification have FDA clearance in the US).

  • Hurricane Florence has people turning to local hardware and supply stores like Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Ace for assistance that the government can’t necessarily provide.
  • These outlets have emergency command centers and meteorologists on duty.
  • After 2017’s brutal hurricane season, Home Depot had revenue of more than $ 100 billion, and Lowe’s earned about $ 68 billion.

MIAMI (AP) — Before and after a hurricane, Ace is the place. And Home Depot and Lowe’s. And many other hardware and building supply outlets.

Not surprisingly, these companies plan for storms such as Hurricane Florence all year. Much like the Federal Emergency Management Agency, supplies are pre-positioned and trucks loaded and ready to go with everything from batteries to gas cans to tarps to chainsaws.

UK and Australia are monitoring their domains with Have I Been Pwned https://briefnews.eu/uk-and-australia-are-monitoring-their-domains-with-have-i-been-pwned/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-and-australia-are-monitoring-their-domains-with-have-i-been-pwned/#respond Sat, 03 Mar 2018 05:38:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-and-australia-are-monitoring-their-domains-with-have-i-been-pwned/

A lot of people have used Troy Hunt’s Have I Been Pwned to see if their email addresses are attached to any services that have experienced data breaches. Large organizations can also use it to search their domain names as a group and now, the service counts the UK and Australian governments among them.

As Hunt explained in a blog post: “Amongst those verified domain searches are government departments and they too are enormously varied; local councils, legal and health services, telecoms and infrastructure etc…The thing is, loads of government departments within different countries have all been running these searches independently and that means an awful lot of duplication of effort has been going on.”

So, to make things more efficient, he’s set up the service to allow the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre and the Australian Cyber Security Centre to be able to search for any .gov.uk or .gov.au domain, respectively. This way, the governments can search all government-associated domains all at one time rather than each individual department having to do it separately themselves.

Regarding why he’s providing the service for free, Hunt said “We really want governments to do their best to protect the folks working in their departments; many of them are working in capacities that help protect our respective nations from all sorts of threats and increasingly, as we all know, that means online threats as well.”

Hunt’s tools are incredibly popular. Recently, Hunt’s leaked password search service Pwned Passwords was incorporated into 1Password, making it easy for 1Password subscribers to check if their passwords have been exposed in any number of data breaches. Others who have implemented the new version of Pwned Passwords include Cloudflare, Nextcloud, Azure Functions and Iowa State University.

The FBI may have ‘incidentally collected’ surveillance on Steve Bannon while monitoring Carter Page https://briefnews.eu/the-fbi-may-have-incidentally-collected-surveillance-on-steve-bannon-while-monitoring-carter-page/ https://briefnews.eu/the-fbi-may-have-incidentally-collected-surveillance-on-steve-bannon-while-monitoring-carter-page/#respond Fri, 09 Feb 2018 17:14:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-fbi-may-have-incidentally-collected-surveillance-on-steve-bannon-while-monitoring-carter-page/ Steve Bannon.AP Photo/Evan Vucci, File

  • The FBI may have “incidentally” collected surveillance on former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon when it was monitoring former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.
  • Bannon and Page spoke in January 2017 about the Steele dossier, a collection of memos alleging collusion between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia.
  • Depending on what Bannon and Page discussed, the conversation could be of interest to investigators probing Russia’s election interference.

The FBI may have “incidentally collected” surveillance on former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon while monitoring the communications of Carter Page, a former adviser to President Donald Trump’s campaign, Politico reported.

The House Intelligence Committee released a memo last week that revealed the FBI sought and obtained a Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant to surveil Page in late October 2016 on suspicion that Page may have been acting as a Russian agent.

Hive’s new home monitoring camera isn’t bound to its base https://briefnews.eu/hives-new-home-monitoring-camera-isnt-bound-to-its-base/ https://briefnews.eu/hives-new-home-monitoring-camera-isnt-bound-to-its-base/#respond Thu, 04 Jan 2018 08:54:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hives-new-home-monitoring-camera-isnt-bound-to-its-base/

Hive is a relatively well-known smart home brand in the UK. It all started with a connected thermostat released back in 2013, endorsed by nationwide utility provider British Gas. Not long after that seal of approval, British Gas acquired the company behind the thermostat, and now the Hive range includes motion sensors, lightbulbs, smart plugs and a water leak detector. Last year, the Hive brand crossed the pond in hope of breaking into North America, and what better way to start 2018 than launch a new product in all markets simultaneously for the first time? That brings us to the new Hive View home monitoring camera: An attempt to balance style and feature set to stand out from the crowd.

It wasn’t long ago, just last summer, that Hive launched its first security camera. Requiring its own specific app and with no cloud storage option, it was a simple affair. And so it was back to the drawing board for the Hive View. That said, the new home monitoring camera has many of the specs and features common to competitor products. We’re talking 1080p livestreaming to the Hive mobile app, nightvision, a 130-degree field of view and Bluetooth pairing for a simple setup process.

Motion and sound sensors, the sensitivity of which are adjustable, will trigger notifications on your smartphone and entries into an event log. Thanks to a dedicated video analytics chip, the camera can also distinguish between people and, well, not people — meaning you can set it to ignore the family cat wandering in and out of frame. You get a rolling 24 hours of video storage for free, or 30 days with the monthly subscription plan. For the paranoid, there’s a scheduling feature that turns the thing on and off at times of your choosing, in addition to an on/off switch on the actual device.

Fairly standard stuff among home monitoring cameras these days, but then most existing products look basically identical: An eyeball on a pedestal. Form is one of the ways the Hive View hopes to get noticed. Designed by serial consultant Yves Béhar, its cuboid body and curved arm are an attractive break from the norm. The ball-and-socket base and rotating head lets you experiment with all kinds of Kubrickian angles. The base is actually made of two parts held together by strong magnets, allowing you to mount the thing on walls and ceilings and pull it down to set up elsewhere when needed. It also comes in two rather lavish color schemes: White and “champagne gold,” as well as black and “brushed bronze.”

This form also conceals a pretty unique function. Just as you can detach the base from the magnetic mount, so you can detach the cube from the base — Hive calls this “grab and go.” Say you want the camera to watch an open back door while you’re airing out your place on a hot day. Instead of moving the whole thing, base and power cable, you pop the camera off and it’s good for about 1 hour to 90 minutes untethered, depending on how often it’s triggered.

In the near future, Hive wants to make its home monitoring cam more than a peace-of-mind device with a special “moment mode.” Kind of like Google’s Clips camera, the idea is you point the Hive View away from your front door and at something you want to capture for the right reasons, like your kid’s birthday party. It’ll then take pictures at intervals to document the event so you don’t have to, as well as making the “grab and go” functionality a bit more useful day-to-day.

Announcing future features on day one might seem promising, but it also highlights what isn’t available out of the box. Basic things like two-way audio and digital zooming aren’t live at launch. The detection feature is very limited, too. Hive View can tell you it’s spotted a person, but the push notification doesn’t include a picture at the moment. You have to scan through the footage yourself for that info.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Another issue with Hive View is convoluted accessibility. It launches in the UK today for £189 for a single camera or £319 for a two-pack (there’s no hard limit on how many the Hive app will support, though your internet probably won’t like 12 livestreams running at once). But, you need a Hive Hub to get the thing online, which is another £80. That’s a pricey extra, especially when the camera isn’t fully entrenched in the Hive ecosystem just yet — meaning it won’t turn your connected lights on when it detects a person, as an example of what’s promised in future updates. Oh, and we almost forgot to mention the Hive Video Playback subscription at £5 more per month.

There are also a couple of payment plans that include the View and various other Hive devices available to Brits. In the US and Canada, though, you can only buy one of these product packages to put one of the new cameras in your home, provided you’re not already on the Hive bandwagon, that is. If you’re an existing customer, you can simple buy a View for $ 200 (CAD $ 239) or spread the cost over 24 months. The 30-day rolling footage subscription is $ 6 (CAD $ 7) extra per month.

If you’re entirely new to the Hive range, however, then you have to purchase the entire “Close to Home” bundle, which includes smart lighting, motion sensors and plugs. This can be purchased for $ 350 (CAD $ 439) or spread over two years, but if you like the look of the View camera, you’ve gotta buy all sorts to get it. And if you’ve got yourself other brands of smart home gear plugged in already, then it just doesn’t make sense to double up, now does it?
