At this year’s CES, it sometimes seems like consumer electronics announcements are dominated by two trends: gaming gear and digital voice assistants. Gaming brand Razer made announcements related to both this week.

Arguably the most notable are HyperSense—a haptic feedback platform that makes PC peripherals like headphones, gaming chairs, and mice provide gaming controller-like feedback along with the audio in games—and the Raptor, Razer’s first gaming monitor designed in-house.

Razer HyperSense

Razer Chroma, an RGB lighting solution that syncs multi-colored lights across all your peripherals to match gameplay in certain games, is one of Razer’s key product offerings. HyperSense builds on that by applying the same sort of concept to haptic feedback—that is, a more sophisticated successor to the “rumble” technology from various game console controllers across the gaming ages.

You can certainly find HDR monitors, but those that exist tend to barely meet the official DisplayHDR standards or are too large for most people. Dell may have hit the sweet spot, however. It’s introducing the Dell 27 USB-C Ultrathin (S2719DC for short), which packs bright DisplayHDR 600 visuals into a 27-inch, 1440p display that measures just under 0.22 inches thick at its slimmest point. If you don’t mind the absence of 4K, it’s potentially ideal for movie marathons. And as the name implies, USB-C can turn it into a laptop dock by delivering data, a display signal and up to 45W of power through one cable.

This isn’t the most advanced screen you’ll find between its 16.7 million-color output, edge LED lighting and 5ms peak response time, but you are getting an IPS panel with over 99 percent sRGB color coverage and 90 percent of the cinematic DCI-P3 gamut. And if you’re a gamer with the right hardware, you’ll be glad to know it touts AMD FreeSync to eliminate screen tearing artifacts.

You will pay a premium for all this tech. The 27 USB-C Ultrathin will go on sale September 20th for $ 550. That’s not egregious for what you’re getting, but you will have to decide if vivid HDR and USB-C simplicity are more important than 4K or a super-wide aspect ratio.

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano, which has been spewing lava since May, gave a few key clues to scientists that an eruption might be imminent. Now, it looks like sound might prove to be another useful tool in the volcanologist’s monitoring arsenal. By mapping out its unique “voiceprint,” researchers could track any significant changes in activity deep within the volcano, per a recent paper in Geophysical Research Letters.

Volcanos make their own kind of music, typically emitting a lot of rumblings in the infrasound regime. These are low-frequency sound waves just below the range of human hearing, bottoming out around 20 Hz. By placing special microphones in the vicinity of a volcanic crater, it’s possible to monitor the infrasonic sounds coming from within.

This is relevant to eruption prediction because those signals seem to get stronger just before a volcano blows, as with the 1998 eruption of Japan’s Sakurajima volcano, or the 2015 eruption of Cotopaxi in Ecuador.

Greetings, Arsians! Courtesy of our friends at TechBargains, we have another round of deals to share. Today’s list is headlined by a deal on ViewSonic’s 24-inch XG2402 gaming monitor, which is currently down to $ 220 at Amazon. That’s as low as it’s been for the general public; the monitor was discounted as part of Amazon’s Prime Day event but usually hovers in the $ 250-260 range.

As you might suspect from the price, the XG2402 isn’t the most cutting-edge gaming monitor around: it’s a TN panel, so it doesn’t have the more accurate colors and wider viewing angles of an IPS display, and it only has a 1080p resolution, which is more acceptable on a 24-inch panel but still not as sharp as pricier options.

That said, its colors aren’t terribly inaccurate, it’s built well, and it supports FreeSync. So if you have an AMD-powered desktop, it should keep your gameplay smooth and free of screen tearing. Its maximum refresh rate of 144Hz is a plus, too; just note that its FreeSync range ends at 48Hz, so it’ll work best if games are kept running above 48 frames per second. Besides that, you get a pair of built-in speakers, two HDMI 1.4 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, a DisplayPort connector, and a 3.5 audio-out jack. While it makes some clear sacrifices, you could still do much worse for $ 220.

Now, to help monitor their salt intake, researchers have developed a flexible and stretchable wireless sensing system designed to be comfortably worn in the mouth.

Based on an ultrathin membrane, the sensor incorprates a miniaturised flexible electronic system that uses Bluetooth technology to wirelessly report salt consumption to a smartphone or tablet.

The researchers plan to further miniaturise the system – which now resembles a dental plate – to the size of a tooth.

Assistant Professor Woon-Hong Yeo, of the Georgia Institute of Technology in the United States, said: “We can unobtrusively and wirelessly measure the amount of sodium that people are taking in over time.

“By monitoring sodium in real-time, the device could one day help people who need to restrict sodium intake learn to change their eating habits and diet.”

The device has been tested in three adult study participants who wore the sensor system for up to a week while eating both solid and liquid foods including vegetable juice, chicken soup and crips.

A recent survey of 1,000 adults found that a third couldn’t estimate how much salt they ate.

The research team, whose findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, say their salt sensing system could help users better track how much salt they consume.

Dr Yeo said. “Our device could have applications for many different goals involving eating behaviour for diet management or therapeutics.

“The entire sensing and electronics package was conformally integrated onto a soft material that users can tolerate.

“The sensor is comfortable to wear, and data from it can be transmitted to a smartphone or tablet.

“Eventually the information could go a doctor or other medical professional for remote monitoring.”

The device can monitor salt intake in real-time, and record daily amounts.

Using an app, Dr Yeo said the system could advise users planning meals how much of their daily salt allocation they had already consumed.

The device can communicate with a smartphone up to 10 metres away.

The researchers said that the next step for the salt sensor are to further miniaturise the device, and test it with users who have hypertension, obesity or diabetes.

Canada will also be deploying aircraft, and surveillance will be coordinated by the US from the Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan.
