Sobchak tried to win Navalny’s sympathies by reminding him that she also built her political platform around numerous allegations of corruption in the higher echelons of Russian power.

The response was quick, harsh and unambiguous. “Everything that you have just said are just empty words,” Navalny said in a conversation that was broadcasted live on Youtube. “I don’t want to be a part of a cartoonish opposition that you are painting now together with Putin.”

The activist went on to describe all of Sobchak’s latest activities as “despicable and hypocritical” and then, while still live on internet broadcast, he said that a few months ago Sobchak visited him at home and told him and his wife, Yulia, that she had been offered “a tremendous sum of money” for agreeing to participate in the presidential elections and that she did not know what to do.

“This is not true, you are lying right now,” Sobchak parried and told her version of the event, in which she asked Navalny to join an opposition coalition and put forward a joint candidate in the presidential polls.

“All of these are lies from the beginning to the end, you were used to turn even more people away from the opposition,” Navalny replied, before calling Sobchak “Putin’s tool.”

In a candid interview with Radio Times, Ms Wilson, 36, waded into the argument over unequal gender pay, which has been playing out at the BBC in recent months.

The star said that ever after winning a Golden Globe, she did not think her pay would have parity with those of other male stars, including West.

She said: “I definitely get less money than a male in my situation would. Definitely.

“Certainly when I signed up to that project, I would have got paid less.

“Then they [the producers] might argue, ‘Well, he’s already done a major American TV show [The Wire] so he’s already got a level.’  

“But even after a Golden Globe I’m not going to be on parity. 

“So he definitely gets more than me. 

“I mean, I don’t know what the figure is, but I’m sure he does.”

Asked if she had ever spoken to West, 48, about it, she replied: “Ah, well, I mean, no. 

“It’s sort of funny. 

“It’s quite hard to bring that up in a way. 

“But it needs to be an open discussion and men need to help us out.”

And she added: “I don’t want more money, I just want equal money. 

“Which means men have to take less.”

In the US drama The Affair, Ms Wilson, who lives in London, performed with a note-perfect American accent, the role winning her a Golden Globe. 

She returns in the fourth season later this year. 

But she has also scored significant successes on stage, her impressive portrayals of complex women – from Anna Christie to Hedda Gabler – winning her two Olivier Awards. 

Her words on equal pay are likely to add to the debate over the issue.

It was Carrie Gracie’s resignation as the BBC’s China Editor which highlighted the issue of equal pay at the BBC, but it has also now been discussed within the entertainment industry in general.

As the row grew at the BBC last month, six leading male presenters agreed to take pay cuts after revelations over unequal salaries.

The corporation confirmed that Huw Edwards, Nicky Campbell, John Humphrys, Jon Sopel, Nick Robinson and Jeremy Vine had all accepted reduced wages.

There is a significant gap between those who are living the best and worst in Britain, with sleep quality found to be the strongest indicator of living well, the study by Oxford Economics and the National Centre for Social Research for Sainsbury’s found.

Those who are satisfied with their sex lives, have job security and a connection with their community are also disproportionately likely to rank at the top of the inaugural Living Well Index.

Researchers found the average Briton has a “living well score” of 62.2 out of 100, with those living the best defined as the 20 per cent of the population with the highest scores, falling between 72 and 92.

They found income has surprisingly little impact on how people feel, with a 50 per cent rise in income contributing to just a 0.5 point increase in a typical Briton’s overall score, while sleep quality could explain 3.8 points of difference between a typical person’s score and those in the top 20 per cent.

Worrying about the health of close relations contributed to a difference of 1.75 points between the typical Briton and those living best.

Researchers asked a nationally representative panel of 8,250 people questions about 60 different aspects of their behaviour, how they live and how they feel.

The same panel will be questioned every six months, enabling the supermarket and researchers to track the effects of how Britons live on how they feel.

Ian Mulheirn, director of consulting at Oxford Economics, said: “Wellbeing is rising up the agenda at a time of rapid change in how we live our lives, and we’ve created a critical new tool that can help us to unpick what’s driving our sense of living well, drawing on a unique, rolling survey of unprecedented breadth and granularity.

“The analysis within the Sainsbury’s Living Well Index reveals that, in a world that’s never been more connected, the richness of our relationships and support networks remains among the biggest determinants of how well we live, and represents an area of our lives in which we can act.“

Sainsbury’s chief executive Mike Coupe said: “We’ve launched the Sainsbury’s Living Well Index to help us better understand what ‘living well’ truly means to people across the UK today.

“The index will help to inform how we run our business and will also help us uncover and engage more boldly on the issues that concern people most in their everyday lives.“

Tenant Vishal had been working out his financial outgoings when he discovered something in the house that he hadn’t accounted for.

Leeds millionaire landlord Prab had not communicated the oversight and worked hard to rectify the issue as quickly as possible.

Pointing to an electric meter, Vishal said: “This electric meter is shared with my next door tenant which I just came to know in the last three months because there was an electrical inspection. So my next door neighbour is using my electricity and paying the bills to the landlord so he owes me something like £400 or £500. I really lost hope actually when I came to know that.”

The programme revealed that when Vishal raised this issue with Prab’s office, they proposed giving him top-up tokens that he would then have to sell directly to his neighbour.

Horrified, Vishal continued: “That’s not fair because they haven’t repaid what I have spent, actually, and he should have his own meter so that they have to pay the money to the service provider, and not to me, because I don’t want to get into the hassle of who’s used how much and constantly keeping tack. 

“That’s not my job to do. I’m not the landlord here. I’m just the tenant. So, looking at this, to tell you frankly, I don’t trust my landlord anymore at all.”

When Vishal finally met with his landlord Prab for the first time, he confronted him about the meter issue and ask him if he had noticed anything different about it while staying in the house.

Taken aback, Prab asked: “In terms of…?” prompting Vishal to ask: “Do you know the electric meter is shared?”

Prab explained: “Yes, this came up I think a few weeks ago, about a week ago,” as Vishal added: “It really came as a surprise for me when I got to know during one of the electrical inspections. Basically, you guys owe me a lot of money!”

Apologetic, Prab replied: “Yeah of course,” as Vishal noted: “It was a major thing for us actually,” before the landlord later attended the house with his son Rowan and asked whether Vishal had raised the issues before.

He said: “Basically, this electric meter is actually running both this property and the one next door and he had to take it upon himself to sort of find out that that was the case. It doesn’t look well does it for him to find that out. I think it’s unfair for him to be expected to sell the top up cards to his neighbour anyway. Obviously we can’t expect him to do that.”

At the end of the programme, Vishal read out a letter from Prab with £100 enclosed, which read: “While we get the electric meter issue resolved, please accept £100 as a gesture of good will until we can work out what we may owe you.”

Visibly moved, Vishal said: “That’s really good of him isn’t it! Even though I’m entitled to it, when you’ve lost hope, somewhere the light shows up.”

Poor Barbara was sweating it out in her impressive cash builder when viewers thought she was asked what was in the middle of a Ferrero Rocher. 

When the contestant answered hazelnut, spectators felt she should have been awarded an extra £1,000 to the jackpot, but Bradley Walsh shut her down. 

After the popular host revealed the chocolate filling was actually almond, viewers went ballistic at the 56-year-old on Twitter when investigating the matter for themselves. 

“It’s a hazelnut in a ferrero! I huff at your almond answer,” complained one audience member, as another agreed: “It’s a hazelnut in the centre of a Ferrero Rocher, not an almond, cheats.”

A third cried: “The Ferrero Rocher website say it’s a hazelnut not an almond, you’ve got it wrong – give her more money!”

After some thorough research on the Ferrero Rocher website, this particularly disgruntled audience member moaned: “Ferrero Rocher consists of a whole roasted hazelnut encased in a thin wafer shell filled with hazelnut chocolate.”

However, the critics were soon left mincing their words as Bradley actually asked what filled the centre of Ferrerro Rafaello chocolate, which is almond.
