Those of us with smaller wrists may have noticed that most of the connected smartwatches out there are, well, kind of huge. Tag Heuer’s Connected Modular 45, for example, was a lovely device with a 45mm case diameter, perfect for larger wrists but lousy for everyone else. The company has now decided to support the smaller among us with a new Connected Modular 41, with — you guessed it — a watch with a 41mm diameter for those with more diminutive extremities.
It’s not just size that matters, here, either. Tag Heuer worked with Intel and Google to create an improved smartwatch, with a brighter screen that displays in 390 X 390 resolution, giving you 326 pixels per inch. The memory capacity is up, too, with 8 GB of storage and 1 GB of RAM included. Similar to the Apple Watch, Tag Heuer’s new 41mm model has nine different straps to connect the device to your arm; you can even connect the company’s Calibre 5 mechanical watch to the bands if you like. The new smartwatch is water resistant to 50 meters and has GPS and NFC (for Android Pay) connectivity. You can connect it to phones running Android 4.4 or iOS 9 and up. The new model is set to retail starting at $ 1,200.00, so start saving your pennies.
]]>
One doesn’t normally think of the Swiss as terribly eccentric, but you could make an exception for Rinspeed boss Frank Rinderknecht. Some of his past creations have been pretty out there, like the sQuba, which started out as a Lotus Elise and ended up a fully electric vehicle that could also dive underwater.
Or the Ʃtos, based on a BMW i8 hybrid but with its own drone that can deliver flowers. But interspersed among the wackiness are some clever ideas. In 2009, the company’s iChange used an iPhone as a key and controller—sorry Tesla fans, Elon didn’t think of that one first! And at this year’s Detroit auto show we also saw the Oasis, an adaptable, autonomous city vehicle that bridges the gap between Blade Runner and our current timeline.
]]>
Rinspeed has made a name for itself creating some pretty outlandish concepts, including the Lotus Elise-based Squba submersible car, or the Oasis that had a garden full of succulents. For the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show, though, the company seems to have embraced more conventional thinking about future transportation and created an autonomous box called Snap. But a key component that helps separate it from other boxes is that the box can be removed or reattached to the chassis easily. You could say it’s a snap, relatively speaking.
Rinspeed touts a few benefits of this setup. The chassis contains all of the electric powertrain components, much like the GM Autonomy concept from a number of years ago, and any other technology that sees extensive wear or could become obsolete quickly. The body simply contains seating for people and the screens for them to connect to the technology. So whenever improved powertrain technology becomes available, or the old versions wear out, Only the chassis has to be replaced, saving money and resources by being able to reuse the body.
Another benefit Rinspeed highlights is the fact that the body can also be removed for a semi-permanent structure that could be used in a variety of ways. The company suggests it could be used as a shopping space, maybe even a food truck. It could also be used as a camper or just a little hangout. It could even be used as a mobile office. It appears removal is reasonably easy with deployable legs that have wheels on the bottom for moving it away from the chassis. They also have little rollers on the edges of the wheels to move it fore, aft, left and right, though wheels on casters would probably be more practical.
Presumably, while the body is removed for one of those stationary tasks, the chassis could be freed up for other tasks. Perhaps it could go pick up bodies that are being used for shipping products. Or it could fetch someone’s privately owned body to be moved to a new location.
Inside, the Snap has the prerequisite configurable touchscreens that adjust to whomever is in the vehicle. It identifies passengers with different sensors including an iris scanner. Passengers can have their preferred music playing, surf the web, and select destinations as you would expect.
Thankfully, there are some funky features that feel very Rinspeed. Apparently the Snap is envisioned to have to have an AI-driven robot that can run errands for you. The Snap also features little boxes in which mint and berries grow. We suspect that if this machine ever made it to production, the berries would always be gone. Hopefully there will be at least a few in the Snap when it makes its debut this January at the 2018 CES.

There’s no question that Pharrell Williams has had at least some fondness for technology (his Daft Punk collabs and gold-tinged smartphones were big clues), but now he’s taking that appreciation to Will.I.Am levels. Roli has revealed that Pharrell is not only becoming its Chief Creative Officer, but will invest in and take co-ownership of the modular instrument startup. He’ll have a vested interest in Roli’s success, in other words. The company hasn’t outlined the terms of the deal, but the superstar will help develop “revolutionary” digital instruments that are accessible and “iconic.”
The first output from the team-up is a Pharrell sound pack for Roli’s Noise app that lets you build tunes using the instruments and vocals of “Happy.” It’s not exactly a brand new piece of hardware, but it’s a start.
It’s easy to be a bit skeptical about the move: just ask BlackBerry how Alicia Keys’ Creative Director role panned out. However, it sounds like Pharrell will be more than a celebrity figurehead. While you probably won’t see him tinkering with prototypes in the engineering lab, he’s clearly interested in shaping Roli and its products. The larger question is whether or not his involvement will have a visible effect — you’ll want to keep an eye out for new controls and other thoughtful touches that you’d expect from a veteran artist.

Can’t we all just get along? Not humans, that’ll seemingly never happen—but how about our stuff? Maybe in the future, all of our personally owned items will cooperate with us and with one another. Renault is continuing the expanding internet-of-things conversation at the Frankfurt auto show with its Symbioz concept, an autonomous and all-electric connected sedan that could also serve as a room in your house.
–
Going all in for its Frankfurt display, Renault built a sleek modern house to pair with the Symbioz concept. In the nature of green initiatives, the Symbioz runs on a purely electric powertrain. Two electric motors on the rear axle power the rear wheels, while the batteries store energy in the floor of the vehicle. Renault sees future electric vehicles as mobile energy-storage packs that could serve double duty for both the car and the house, an idea touted by numerous EV and fuel-cell concepts over the past two decades. As an example of how the two could mesh on one smart power grid, Renault says the Symbioz could temporarily power things in the house during peak energy hours or during a blackout.
–
–
The Symbioz is also intended to serve as an extension of the owner’s living space. The video below shows that the car can drive itself in and out of a house, park itself in a room to serve as a sort of isolated pod, or park next to the house to create an added room. The Symbioz has a retracting dashboard and seats that can swing around for train-style face-to-face seating to create a sort of conversation pod.
–
As a car, it can also recognize different drivers and passengers and cater to their previously set preferences. How does this differ from what cars can do today? After all, nobody’s stopping anybody from driving their cars into their living rooms (some people already do) or from using vehicles as personal escape modules. The differentiation will all depend on the applications of smart technology.

Although Renault doesn’t go into detail about the connectivity and entertainment options, it does claim that a real-life demonstration will be available for testing later this year. It won’t be a full realization of the Symbioz, but it will give an idea of Renault’s current and upcoming connected customization. Partnerships with LG, Ubisoft, Devialet, Sanef, TomTom, and IAV aid in autonomy, geo-location, interaction with the infrastructure, virtual reality, and human-machine interfacing.
–
There’s no specific timeline for Renault’s vision, but with things like smart home devices already connecting to cars for remote start and advanced map planning, the shift has begun. The company’s video seems to us to be long on warm and fuzzy visions and short on details about the actual concept car, but then we’re car-focused people and the Symbioz aims for a much different demographic.

We already have ways to measure the levels of pollution in bodies of water, but an eel-inspired robot can do the job faster and more effectively. The researchers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and other institutions have created a modular robotic eel that can swim through contaminated water to pinpoint sources of pollution. Each module is equipped with a different type of sensor, including biological ones, like fish cells, live crustaceans and modified bacteria. Scientists can customize the eel for different locations by choosing the modules they need and leaving the others out of the configuration.
Some of the modules the researchers made have physical and chemical sensors that can test for water conductivity and temperature. Others rely on living organisms. One type is filled with bacteria the team developed to generate light when exposed to mercury. Another uses fish cells grown on electrodes that refuse to touch each other when toxins are present. The scientists also placed tiny crustaceans called Daphnia in one module, since their movements can indicate water toxicity.
The swimming machine can take data all these sensors collect and send them to a remote computer in real time. And since it moves like a real eel does unlike robots with propellers that kick up mud and disturb aquatic life, it can gather the most accurate data possible. EPFL says the machine can either follow a preprogrammed path or use the info it gathers to track down the source of pollution on its own. It can, for instance, swim towards more and more toxic waters
The researchers have only tested the physical and chemical sensors in the field thus far, since the biological ones are harder to deploy. They’re planning to test the biological modules outside the lab this summer, though, so they’ll figure out how effective they are in real-life situations soon enough.

RED, the ultra high-end camera company with a flare for dramatic product designs, has announced an Android smartphone called the “RED Hydrogen.” The press release is very light on details and written in RED’s typical maximum-hype style, declaring that phone “shatters the mold of conventional thinking” and “features nanotechnology.” There are a few details we can try to translate into English, though.
First up, I’m not even quite sure what the phone’s official name is. The website calls it the “RED Hydrogen,” while the “Product Detail” PDF calls it the “RED Hydrogen One.” The tag line calls this device a “Holographic media machine in your pocket” and says the 5.7-inch display “seamlessly switched between traditional 2D content, holographic multi-view content, 3D content, and interactive games.” So presumably, like a Nintendo 3DS or HTC Evo 3D, this will come with some kind of special autostereoscopic 3D display.
The talk of holography is a reference to something called “RED Hydrogen 4-view content (H4V)” which sounds like a new proprietary format from RED, but the company hasn’t defined or announced H4V anywhere as far as we can tell. “Hydrogen” seems to be the branding for whatever this new imaging format is. The phone is also the “Hydrogen media machine,” and, with a future accessory, you’ll be able to record a “Hydrogen format holographic image.” The release goes on to call the phone a “Control center for the hydrogen system” and will integrate with RED’s cameras as a “user interface and monitor.”
